Inspired Italy’s Mille Miglia and the West Coast
California Mille, The Golden Empire Region of the Porsche Club of American hosted it’s first (and perhaps last) Meta
Mille Miglia tour. This driving tour took place over 3 days throughout some of California’s most beautiful countryside's.
It was a 500 mile tour that took place over a three day period. From Friday though Sunday attendees drove from
Bakersfield, through the twists and turns of Hwy 33 to Ojai and Santa Barbara. Over the weekend the journey took us up
Hwy 1 through the some of the most majestic coastal scenery California has to offer. Ending with a thrilling drive down
Hwy 25 out of Hollister. Another twisty curvy back road experience that Porsche-philes thrive on.
Day One: Friday
From Bakersfield to Ojai over the scenic an twisting turns of Hwy 33 into Ojai. Then up the lower portion of the Central
Coast to Santa Barbara’s Stern’s Wharf for lunch at the Longboard Grill. And then on to a beautiful drive out of Santa
Barbara over the San Marcos Pass and into the charmingly quant Danish community of Solvang. Day One ended in the
pouring rain with a good dinner and a restful night’s sleep at the Royal Copenhagen Inn.
Beautiful morning in Solvang after that rainy night. Everyone wiped their Porsches off and enjoy a hearty breakfast at
Paula’s Pancakes. Greg, Rick, and the Harris’s take a tour through Virgil Eling’s motorcycle museum in Solvang. While the
rest of us begin our day with the Firestone winery tour and tasting. Yes, It’s never too early to sample great wines ! Our
wine tasting group continues their morning with a drive through the beautiful back roads of the Foxen Canyon which led
us into the secluded oak forest of Tepusquet mountains. A very well maintained country road full to view lots of wildlife.
A short drive up Hwy 101 and both groups joined up again at our lunch stop at the lovely Ventana Grill, or former Shore
Cliff restaurant for all of you “hipsters” who may recall the action filled evenings of great food, drink, and live music of
this 80s and 90s hotspot overlooking the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.

Fortunately the Girls were the only things
upside-down after their 3 Martini lunch !

A Review of a terrific
PCA weekend road trip !
Day Two: Saturday
11
Day Two Continues:
After a rather chaotic gasoline dash the group continued up Hwy 101 and crossed over to Hwy 1 at San Luis Obispo. That
drive brought us on up to Ocean by the Pines, Cambria. A gorgeous little quant community who happened to be invaded
by Scarecrows that weekend. Started in 2009 with only 30 Scarecrows spend throughout the town, the Annual Scare-
crow Festival of 2014 boasted nearly 500 of the handmade humanoids throughout the town this year. Unfortunately the
much needed and welcomed rain on Saturday damped the Scarecrow viewing. They all had plastic bags over them.
Betsy Wadman arranged for what I found to be a transcendent Evening Tour of the Hearst Castle. I’ve been through the
Castle many times but never after dark. The warm glow of the alabaster lighting fixtures transported us back into an Art
Deco age of Downton Abby. On the following page you will see the amazing visual sensation of the Castle after dark.
But wait, we’re not done with our Saturday evening yet. After the Evening of the Castle we drove 15 miles north to a
little bit of California heaven, the Ragged Point Inn for dinner and a night’s rest . This small set of motel rooms and res-
taurant sits 600 feet above the Pacific Ocean. All night long you are serenaded by the crashing ocean surf below.
Day Three: Sunday
In the morning we awoke to
find ourselves nestled in of
the one of the most beautiful
areas that the California coast-
line has to offer. The stunning
coastal view overloads the visual senses. And the aroma of the lush oleander, pine, and cypress trees is intoxicating.
After breakfast the group heads up majestic Highway 1. I know of no other road I find more breathtaking and fun to
drive than this section of California coastal highway.
A bit later we all stopped and did what all
site seers on Hwy 1 do. We stretched our
legs, admired the view, and everyone began
to Yo Yo. Nick makes it look so easy every-
one wanted a try. Nick carry an assortment
of 12 Yo Yos so it easy to accommodate all.

After we got this crowd of Yo Yo s back into their Porsches we continued up the coast to Monterey. For what else?
More food of course. It was the second restaurant at the end of a pier again. I missed the first in Santa Barbara. But
Rappa’s here in Monterey was excellent. Great Clam Chowder and Shrimp Louie salads. And the scenery was wonder-
ful once again with a gorgeous harbor view.
Now this is where the Harris’s and Nick and I jumped
off the tour and came back home. The rest of the
group continued up to Hollister where they connected
with Hwy 25 and enjoyed another curvy, twisty road
that Porsches thrive on.
As I often like to say, A Great Time Was Had By All.
It was not only an enjoyable Porsche road trip, but a
window into the character and personalities of our
members as well. How you ask ? Well;
We learned that our own Betsy Bailey is
from the “Flower Days” …..
We learned that Ken Keenan never
tries to be anything he isn’t !
Except maybe sober sometimes …...
We learned that as much as
Tammy Jo loves her iPad,
she’s a very sharing person.
So she left her iPad sitting on this rock behind
Greg hoping that someone else would find it
and enjoy it as much as she has …….
And we learned the Bozo in this Tangerine 911 Targa can’t seem to figure out how to park in the same direction as everyone else !
Not sure what the
lesson learned
here is, but it can’t
be good !

California’s Beautiful Central Coast
Thank you Charee Keenan for this lovely photo collage of our driving tour.
Who said Porsche owners aren’t tree huggers ? This is a magnificent old Cork Oak tree. This soft bark tree trunk has
actually produced thousands of bottle corks over the years.
No wine glasses stayed full for long here.
Beautiful view of the Santa Ynez valley looking
out through the window of the tasting room.

Porsche Club of America’s Fall 2014 Member Only Raffle has begun, and there’s excellent reason to purchase at least one $50 ticket: a chance to win a Boxster or Cayman GTS plus $25,000 cash. Click here to register.
Porsche’s mid-engined sports cars are the most recent models to receive GTS badging, earned through higher levels of performance than their S counterparts. A 15-horsepower bump for both cars endows the Boxster GTS with 330 hp and the Cayman GTS with 340, while Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Sport Chrono pack-age, which includes goodies such as dynamic transmission mounts, Sport Plus mode, and launch control, are stand-ard. The sport exhaust system is also standard, and the GTS models maintain the option for a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed PDK automatic.
They ride on 20-inch Carrera S wheels and receive other exterior appointments to differentiate them from lesser models. Unique front and rear fascias are paired with “blacked out” Bi-Xenon headlamps with Porsche Dynamic Lighting System, which swivels the lights slightly to the inside of turns.
So if you want a chance to win one of these great Porsches (plus the cash), click here to register for the raffle online. Go to the second image to read the rules in their entirety. Here’s basically how the raffle works:
Limited to 8,000 for 1st vehicle For every 4,000 entries after 8,000 has been reached, another Grand Prize package will be added If an additional 4,000 is not reached, for every 1,000 entries after 8,000 a Germany trip will be added as a prize

The Porsche exhibit was amazing. It was the most exclusive of all the manufacturers set in a separate room from all the rest. Every Porsche model was on display including all variants of the GTS and Hy-brid lines as well as the amazing 918. We had an opportunity to mingle with PCA members from many other regions. Also present was the president of PCA National Manny Alban and Executive Di-rector Vu Nguyen as well as Zone 8 Rep Tom Brown. The six of us that went spent most of our time admiring some of the aftermarket goodies and partners with Cal Inland region to negotiate a couple deals here and there (look for a possible group buy on car batteries soon). Looking forward to next year, maybe we can have a larger group of GEM go.

1995 Porsche Carrera 911 Coupe, 993 generation, Guards Red/ Tan upholstery, Manual 6 speed transmission, 67K miles. I am the 3rd own-
er and the cars two previous owners are also from Bakersfield. Surprisingly, this car has spent its entire life in Bakersfield yet nobody from
the Porsche community has ever seen it. The guy I bought it from has owned the car for the past 13 years but rarely drove it. It is in out-
standing condition and ready to represent GEM at upcoming events!
The car was not for sale when I was introduced to the owner by a mutual friend who knew he had a 993 and that I was looking for one. After
lengthy negotiations we came to terms for the sale.

Mark Webber has escaped serious injury following a frightening late-race accident in Sunday’s FIA WEC season-ending Six Hours of Sao Paulo.
The ex-F1 star lost control of his No. 20 Porsche 919 Hybrid entering the high-speed final section of the Interlagos circuit with just 28 minutes remaining in the race.
Webber climbed from the car and was declared by Porsche to be OK but has been transported to a local hospital for precautionary checks.
Matteo Cressoni, the driver of the No. 90 8Star Motorsports Ferrari F458 Italia, who was collected in the incident, was evaluated and released from the circuit’s medical center.
Webber’s sister No. 14 Porsche of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb went onto claim victory in the race, marking Porsche’s first overall victory in a major long-distance sports car race since 1989.

Porsche's going all in for Le Mans in 2015! Earlier today Porsche announced they will enter a third Porsche 919 Hybrid for the 24-hour race in Le Mans (France) on June 13/14 in 2015. There's no word yet on who will drive the third 919 (Jenson Button anyone?) but Porsche did confirm that current works drivers Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, Brendon Hartley, Neel Jani, Marc Lieb and Mark Webber have all been confirmed to continue for 2015.
Porsche To Enter A Third 919 Hybrid In 2015 Le Mans
And just in time after Mark Webber’s crash destroys #20
Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Board, Research and Development, Porsche AG, said: “In 2014 we have been competitive immediately with the most complex and innovative race car Porsche has built so far. To date we have achieved five podium places, three pole positions and two record laps, in Shanghai and Bahrain. These are outstanding results. But this programme doesn’t just produce success on race tracks, but also on the engineering side. The target is the highest performance with maximised efficiency in ever growing dimensions. This is why we will take on the challenge with three Porsche 919 Hybrids in 2015.”
As a dress rehearsal for Le Mans in 2015, the third 919 will be entered in the six-hour race in Spa-
Francorchamps on May 2.
