Peoria Reads! 2016 Announces ‘The Things They Carried’ as Book Choice; Variety of Programs Planned

The Big Read Peoria Reads! chose the book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien as the one city, one book read for 2016 and a variety of events have been planned to help readers understand the book and the themes it explores.

The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of 43. Happy Holidays with E-Books! by Cindy Wright

The Wolf Among Us by TellTale games is a prequel to the Fables graphic novel series by Bill Willingham about fairy tale characters living together in modern day New York. If you have not already read the books I highly recommend you do so, and if you already have and want some more stories about popular literary characters interacting with each other I have some suggestions below. The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde starts with The Eyre Affair. Thursday Next is a member of the literary police and is after a criminal who has been stealing characters straight from the pages of books, and his next target is Jane Eyre. Through the course of the book, and the rest of the se-ries, Thursday Next comes across several beloved characters from popular literature. In Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross a teenage girl runs away to her birth town to try and find some answers about her parents’ deaths. She comes across a group of other teenagers, each bearing a curse directly from a different fairy tale. She also finds out she has a curse of her own, straight from Sleep-ing Beauty, she is destined to prick her finger and fall into a deep sleep. Enchanted by Alethea Kontis is based on the unique premise that all the popular fairy tales originated from one family with seven daughters. The book starts off focusing on the youngest, Sunday, and her meeting with an enchanted frog. In American Gods by Neil Gaiman an ex-con becomes the reluctant body guard and messanger of a mysterious individual. As they travel the country he discovers old gods from several different cultures are living in America leading seemingly normal lives but are about to take on the new gods in a battle of beliefs.

A Dream of Ice by Gillian An-derson is the second book in the Earthend Saga. The first book in the series was A Vision of Fire. After discovering a link to the an-cient civilization of Galderkhaan, Caitlin O’Hara, child psychologist, finds herself with the ability to heal her young patients with her mind. She also finds that she can

see things from other places and times but as she learns more about her powers she starts to feel like someone is watching her. At the same time field agent Mikel Jasso, who works for a research organization searching for the Galderkhaan ruins in Antarctica, falls down a crevasse and discovers a city preserved in the ice and finds that the stone artifacts that he has been collecting are not as primitive as he thought. As Caitlin and Mikel uncover the secrets of Galderkhaani, they find that the person hunting Caitlin and the stones may be connected.

Precious Gifts by Danielle Steel is the story of a father’s last wish to make a difference in the lives of his children. Paul Parker had been a mostly absent father but when he passed away and the family gathered to read his will, his son and three daughters saw a new side to their father, a caring man who wanted to redeem himself

by making a personal bequest to each of them to help them achieve their own unique destinies and hopefully happiness. But as in all of Steel’s novels, there is a twist; Paul leaves his ex-wife a gift that deals with a secret that remained a mystery throughout their marriage. As she searches to discover its history and rightful owner, she finds it is a gift that sets her free from the past to find true happiness.

In The Hunting Trip: A Novel of Love and War by William Butterworth III, Philip W. Williams commits a prank that gets him expelled from boarding school and sent home on the train, wondering what is going to happen to him. When he becomes a world-class marksman and a special agent in the U.S. Army Counter in-telligence in postwar Germany, the adventures begin: he helps a Soviet officer defect, becomes a courier for the CIA, marries an Australian

ballet dancer, becomes a bestselling novelist and then meets the love of his life on a hunting trip to Scotland. It’s a story of love, war and adventure.

The House of the Rising Sun by James Lee Burke is the next entry into the Holland family saga and tells the story of a father and son separated by war and circumstances. Hackberry Holland is a Texas Ranger on his way to join up with his son Ishmael, a captain in the United States Army. A vicious encounter with four Mexican soldiers leaves Hackberry in control of a stolen artifact, which makes him the focus of the rage of an Austrian arms dealer and lands his son in

the middle of the plot to recapture the treasure. Along the way, three women - Ishmael’s mother, Ruby Dansen, Beatrice DeMolay, a broth-el madam and Maggie Bassett, the one time lover of the Sundance Kid - will aid Hackberry in his quest to reunite with Ishmael and defeat their enemies to return the treasure believed to be the mythic cup of Christ to its rightful place.

The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology by Simon Winchester. In 1793, a canal digger named William Smith made a startling discovery. He found that by tracing the placement of fossils, which he uncovered in his excavations, one could follow layers of rocks as they dipped and rose and fell—clear across

England and, indeed, clear across the world—making it possible, for the first time ever, to draw a chart of the hidden underside of the earth. Smith spent twenty-two years piecing together the fragments of this unseen universe to create an epochal and remarkably beautiful hand-painted map. But instead of receiving accolades and honors, he ended up in debtors’ prison, the victim of plagiarism, and virtually homeless for ten years more. The Map That Changed the World is a very human tale of endurance and achievement, of one man’s dedication in the face of ruin. With a keen eye and thoughtful detail, Simon Winchester unfolds the poignant sacrifice behind this world-changing discovery.

Club Read will meet on Wednesday, January 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Secret Rooms by Catherine Bailey. After the Ninth Duke of Rutland, one of the wealthiest men in Britain, died alone in a cramped room in the servants’ quarters of Belvoir Castle

on April 21, 1940, his son and heir ordered the room, which contained the Rutland family archives, sealed. Sixty years later, Catherine Bailey became the first historian given access. What she discovered was a mystery: The Duke had painstakingly erased three periods of his life from all family records—but why? As Bailey uncovers the answers, she also provides an intimate portrait of the very top of British society in the turbulent days leading up to World War I.

The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, January 11 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent

power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows--everyone knows--that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked…until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back. Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.
