Dear Parents/ Carers, As we near the end of another really successful Autumn Term, I am writing to thank you once again for your continued support, and to keep you informed of the most recent developments; we have once again achieved our highest ever pass rates at GCSE, and our sixth form students have achieved some fantastic grades with a large number of them going on to top universities. We are very proud of the progress made by our students, and their achievements both inside and outside the classroom. We have the largest number of students ever in our sixth form which is now the largest in Enfield, Barnet and Haringey. As a result of our increased numbers, we have refurbished the Sixth Form Centre on the Broomfield Campus with the help of the Local Authority, and are now working there with some of our sixth form students alongside Bowes School,West Lea School and Broomfield School in the newly opened ‘Winchmore Sixth Form Centre’. This expansion has allowed us to accommodate more students and offer a wider variety of post 16 courses, with the vast majority of sixth form teaching continuing to take place on the Winchmore site. I am delighted to inform you that for the fourth year running we have seen an increase in the number of students applying to join us in Year 7. The School Production of Billy Elliot was simply the best that I have ever seen in my many years of teaching! Every year I wonder how the Expressive Arts faculty will surpass the last production, every year the ‘bar is raised’. The impact of the Arts, performance, sport and travel on our school community continues to be huge - I look forward with great anticipation to the ‘Rock Challenge’. Please continue to encourage your children to take part in the wide range of opportunities offered outside the classroom. On Tuesday, 22nd November, we had a visit from Ofsted who were extremely impressed with the learning environment in the school and the work done by our fantastic staff; I have just received a draft copy of their report which remains confidential for the time being but is very positive. Once the report is published; we will make it available to you all. The behaviour of our students continues to be of a very high standard both in school and on the way to and from school thanks to your support. Please continue to reinforce the very high standards I know you have at home; working together we have a far greater impact. I would once again like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and am sure that you will join me in thanking our wonderful staff and Governors for all their hard work. Dear Parents/ Carers,

As we near the end of another really successful Autumn Term, I am writing to thank you once again for your continued support, and to keep you informed of the most recent developments; we have once again achieved our highest

To provide additional capac-ity for students and the range of courses offered, in 2016 Winchmore took possession of the ex-Broomfield School Sixth Form Centre. Between July and September the centre was re-furbished with two new ICT suites, six teaching rooms, an up-graded Study Room, new toilets, a kitchenette, an exter-nal seating area and Wi-Fi ac-cess.

A number of academic and vo-cational subjects, involving over 200 students, are taught there – including A Levels in Com-puting, Economics, English Lan-

guage, Geography, History, Physics, Psychology and RS and BTECs in Business, Health & Social Care, ICT, Media and Sport.

All staff and students have expressed positive comments about the learning environment and the op-portunities provided at the centre. Indeed, attendance, punctuality and student progress in the subjects delivered at the campus have improved compared with the previous years.

The experience is summed up by the comment of a visiting Year 11 student whilst speaking to a fellow student, ‘Wow, it’s just like Winchmore, only better’.

On Monday 21st November I got a phone call from the school telling me that Ofsted would be in-specting the school the next day. So, on the Tuesday, I came into school and spent 30 minutes answering questions from the inspectors about the governing body, how we operate and how well we know the school. I came back into school at the end of that day to hear what they thought about the school as a whole. At this stage I can't provide you with any details of what the inspectors said but I can tell you that they were very thorough, they talked to lots of people and they asked lots of questions. I can also tell you that the staff looked absolutely exhausted because they had been running their socks off during the previous 24 hours to ensure that everything was as it should be. The full Ofsted report should be available to download from the school website very soon.

On the same Tuesday I was delighted to attend the official launch of our new sixth form block on the Broomfield Campus. The Broomfield Campus is now home to four schools - Bowes Southgate Green School, Broomfield School, West Lea School and now Winchmore. We took over the sixth form provi-sion in September and are now providing classes in the newly refurbished sixth form block which I have to say looks fantastic. As part of the visit, I got to tour all four schools along with Councillor Orhan and teachers and governors from the other schools. For me the highlight of the visit was watching the faces of year-seven students at Broomfield School as they discovered how different firework chemicals make different colours when you set light to them.

My family were very pleased to host a dinner for two of our Chinese visitors, Ms Wang and Mr Wu, from the Shunde Number 1 Middle School, Changshan. I have to admit that I struggled to remember the little bit of Mandarin I learnt at Winchmore a couple of years ago but we managed to get by, especially once we had introduced our visitors to our guinea pigs (Túnsh in Mandarin) which seemed to break the ice. It also helped that Mr Wu knew the English for Wi-Fi because, once we had this, he could show us pictures of their home town and the fabulous national park nearby. We also discovered that our visitors were rather fond of mini-éclairs.

Anyway, the governors would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a very merry new year. We hope you come back after the break refreshed and ready for the new term.

We are pleased to advise you that we have had another successful term. Attendance to date is again on target, currently standing at just below 95%

Group % Attend % PunctualYear 11 95.1 98.3Year 10 93.3 98.7Year 9 94.5 99.1Year 8 94.6 99.1Year 7 96.9 99.3totals 94.9 98.9

We work very closely with the LA’s Education Welfare Service and Helen Fraser, our EWO (Education Welfare Officer) is in school every few weeks monitoring students’ attendance.

She works closely with parents of students with ongoing attendance and punctuality concerns. If you have received a concern letter from the Attendance Office and are worried this may apply to you, please feel free to contact us should you wish to discuss further.

There is a clear link between poor attendance/punctuality and lower academic achievement, so it is really important that we all work together so that our students can make the most of all learning opportunities and achieve their full potential.

Please make sure you are aware of the start date for the new term, Monday 9th January. We can’t authorise late returns due to date confusions or holidays. We have to follow Government guidelines that state holidays are not to be taken during term time.

We wish you all a very peaceful, enjoyable break and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Ms Turner, Mrs Lamont & Mrs CostaAttendance Team

SpOOKtaCular SuCCeSS!!

On Friday 21st October Winchmore school held its third Spooktacular Fayre and fireworks display, which was attended by over 600 people - a new record for the Spooktacular!! Mrs Winters, Mrs McCaul and the 6th form team were very busy on the door, as were Mr Booth, Mr Sim and Mrs Basri!

The fireworks were provided by the award winning pyromusical company; Sonning fireworks, and was set to music that had been selected by the pupils.

The fayre was very well attended with hundreds of people taking advantage of the wide range of products and delicious food stalls available for sale. Ms Davies and her team were inundated throughout the evening with requests for their fabulous face painting skills, Ms Stewart and her group of 6th form and lower school helpers had a fantastic time in the craft area, Mrs Nicoloau, Ms Liddle, Mrs Cordiner, Ms Kolthoff-Callan, the science PGCE staff and 6th formers were kept busy with their stalls, including sticking hundreds of tattoos onto people and we even had a visit from Ms Cleverly whom helped out on the ever popular Tombola! All of this was surrounded by the well selected music from DJ Buckatron who was also head judge for the fancy dress competition, which was won by Christian St Louis Armstrong for his spooky Grim Reaper costume!

Miss Ronketti and all the staff would like to thank everyone that attended and helped out - you all helped make it the most successful Spooktacular yet!

We look forward to seeing you on Friday 13th October 2017 for Spooktacular 4!!!

engliSh trip tO See OthellO

On Wednesday, 23rd November, Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Tatham took a group of Year 13 English Literature students to view a screening of ‘Othello’.

The screening was part of the Into Film Festival whose purpose this year was to promote positive black stereotypes in film. ‘Othello’ is the Shakespeare text for the A Level Literature course and so this was a perfect opportunity to combine a fun day out with some revision for the forthcoming exams. The film, simply titled ‘O’ is a modern day version of the Shakespearean original, updated to the setting of an American High School, focusing on the star of the basketball team, Odin. It stars Mekhi Phifer, Julia Stiles and Josh Harnett.

O was nominated for a Black Reel award for best actor Mekhi Phifer. It also won the Golden Space Needle Award at the Seattle international Film Festival for Best Director. The screening was arranged for school students only, and there were many schools in attendance from all over London, at the Regent Street Theatre, a beautiful, old fashioned theatre which has been restored to its former glory.

The Y13 students really enjoyed the film (as did the teachers) and as an added bonus we got to see the wonderful art deco Regent’s Street Christmas lights - this year they are based on the original design of the very first lights to be displayed in Regent’s Street - and they didn’t disappoint.

In our October newsletter we announced that our school was one of four shortlisted schools for this exciting competition by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. The other schools were St Marylebone C of E girls school, Westminster, Ellen Wilkinson girls school, Ealing, Wallington school for girls, Sutton. Also, the London Design and Engineering UTC, Newham designed a model bridge which featured twitter responsive lighting.

Our journey has taken us from initial design proposals back in June to phase two shortlisting: refining our designs and turning them into an animation, with support from artist in residence Josh Knowles. The shortlisted entries including ours were on public exhibition at The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank 9-29 November. It is estimated over 170,000 people saw this exhibition.

There were more than 100 design teams from around the world who entered the professional part of the Illuminated River International Design Competition. The six finalists shortlisted went on to develop new lighting scheme proposals to transform four bridges – Westminster, Waterloo, London and Chelsea – along with a masterplan for all 17 bridges between Albert and Tower.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said: “The Illuminated River will breathe new life into the Thames and create a dazzling outdoor gallery for Londoners to enjoy each night, showing that our capital remains a leader in innovation, sustainability and artistic creativity.”

Some quotes from our design team on this experience are:

‘Creating a stop motion animation challenged us to think differently and learn new skills. We had to be really clear in conveying our ideas across to others and improve our team working skills.’ anjumon ali

‘We feel our animation shows change, influence and unity of our city. Also, the importance of the environmental impact in a positive light for future generations.’ Yasemin aslan

‘It was a very worth while experience and amazing opportunity to express our ideas and opinions, we feel we have a special place right in the heart of our city.’ Shaima madarbukus

‘Current’ the winning lighting concept for the Thames

‘We are looking forward to seeing everybody’s outcomes and showing diversity through creativity, giving the visual arts a platform and showcasing London.’ Stepan neokleous

Congratulations to our team we are very proud of you for being shortlisted and showcasing the artistic talents of Winchmore School in such a prestigious i n t e r n a t i o n a l platform. Anjumon Ali, Yasemin Aslan, Haniyeh Khaleghi, Shaima Madarbukus, Stepan Neokleous and James Nicolas.

This half term’s highlights are as follows:

Billy ElliotThe team provided refreshments for the two evening performances of this production and also organised a raffle. Many thanks to the Expressive Arts staff who once again provided our students with a means by which to fundraise.

Music Cafe and Transition EveningGeorgina Hoy provided refreshments at both the Year 11 to 12 Transition Evening and the Music Café. As well as making a profit through sales of drinks and snacks she also managed to sell some more of her keyrings to support her Ecuador fundraising. Thanks to Mrs Hughes and Ms Stewart for providing Georgina with these opportunities to fundraise.

SponsorshipThe team continue to pursue a number of schemes which hopefully will result in some sponsorship and grants to help with their fundraising. If anyone knows of any companies or organisations who may be willing to support our team to Ecuador then please contact Mrs Winter at the school.

natiOnal enterpriSe Challenge

This year our Year 10 students took part in the 2017 National Enterprise Challenge on the 23rd November. The challenge was set by Theo Paphitis and our students had to design an App. which would be of benefit to the Rymans Group. The Year 10 students worked very well in teams of 6. The day was supported by 8 members of staff from the National Enterprise Challenge and of course all of our students were very well supported by our own Winchmore staff.

Nine teams won the initial heats held in the classrooms and went through to the Final which was held in the Hall Period 5. The judging panel included Ms Macit as well as staff from the NEC.

Two teams won a place through to the finals in July and will be working hard in the New Year to make sure their presentations are as strong as they can possibly be for the Final where they will be competing against over 130 other teams.

The official launch of the 2017 National Enterprise Challenge took place in Central London on the 29th November. As well as Theo Paphitis, there were a number of guest speakers at the event, including Mrs Winter, who was asked to talk about the Challenge from a school’s perspective. The Challenge launch was well attended with lots of social media coverage and a ‘Mannequin Challenge’!

On the 14th November, twenty five Year 10 Business students took part in the annual GEW challenge. This year the challenge was set by Enterprise Enfield and involved our students preparing a marketing strategy for a new product.

The day went very well and we were very fortunate to have two members of Enterprise Enfield, Nick Johnson and Caz Kennedy, present throughout the day to share their entrepreneurial expertise with our students. The final presentations were very well thought out with the winning team receiving iTunes vouchers as prizes. All students received a certificate for taking part in this Global event. Thanks must also go to our business staff Ms Hurley, Ms Macit and Mr McCarthy for their support throughout the day.

The 6th December saw the launch of a new programme which is a joint initiative between our Enfield Careers Service Adviser, EWB Coordinator and the ESOL Coordinator.

A number of Turkish speaking parents were invited into school where with the help of an interpreter they were given information on the Careers help and pathways available to students, the possibility of joining one of our ESOL classes and information on the Duke of Edinburgh Award. It was also very positive to have one of the parents currently taking part in the ESOL classes share her experiences with our visitors.

A group of sixth form students helped supervise a small play area in the library for younger siblings who had come along with mum.

Over twenty five Turkish speaking parents attended the event and this resulted in a number of careers appointments being booked as well as applications for the ESOL classes.

Thanks to Mrs Hardman for all her input into the ESOL classes and to Mrs Bamawo who spoke so clearly about the Careers help available in school. Mrs Owen, Ms Steers, Mrs McCaul and Mrs Kumbarji also supported this event.

Finally thanks must go to Mrs Cordiner who kindly hosted our parents in the school Library. Her lovely fireside display provided the perfect setting for the event.

It is intended to run a similar event in February for our Somali speaking parents.
