“Xmas” is an old abbreviation dating back to the 17th Century. X is the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter in the Greek word for Christ. Despite 300-year-old origins, Xmas is now commonly mis-understood as an effort to secularize the Christ-mas season by removing references to Christ.

Come on out December 8th to cel-ebrate the holiday season alongside your neighbours with Mahogany’s 2nd Annual Community Parade start-ing at 5:00 pm.
The Parade will be approximately 1.7 km long (30-45 mins), beginning at the Divine Mercy School Parking Lot and ending on Masters Blvd. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will lead the Parade, which will also include local groups and businesses as well as some other special surprise guests. A Celebrity Guest Judge will be present to judge the Best Float!!!
Bring a toy for the *Toy Drive to the parade, where Parade walkers will come around and collect them from the spectators for the Ronald MacDonald House, providing toys to those families less fortunate this holiday season.
Mahogany Tree of HopeMake your way down to the Beach Club after the parade from 6:30 – 7:30
pm and join your neighbours in some carolling by the fire (roasting marsh-mallows of course) while you watch the Mahogany Tree of Hope light up. Hot chocolate and cookies will also be provided.
Non-perishable food item or cash donation for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank will be accepted at the Mahogany Tree of Hope, where you will also be entered in a prize draw!
Here Comes Santa Claus!Stayed tune through What’s Up Mahogany to book your appointment at the Beach Club from 3:30 – 8:30pm for pictures with Santa, courtesy of the Mike Burton Home Team!
Light Up MahoganyTransform the exterior of your home and front yard into a dazzling winter wonderland display and enter in our annual ‘Light Up Mahogany’ residen-tial lights competition for your chance to win CASH PRIZES!!! But wait, it gets better… Winners will be announced
at the commencement of the Parade of Lights event and will also get a chance to RIDE IN THE PARADE WITH SANTA CLAUS HIMSELF!
All entries must be in no later than November 30th. To be eligible for the Early Bird draw, you must have your entry application emailed to [email protected] by November 25th. All entrants must submit a photo of their light display by Nov 30th, where we will take it to the public to vote from Dec 2nd to 6th. For more information and entry forms, check out the Mahogany HOA website under ‘Upcoming Events’.
*Toy DriveThe holiday season is just around the corner, reminding us that many out-of-town families with sick children will call The Ronald McDonald House “home” this Christmas. Help make the holidays a little bit brighter this year for the kids and families at the Ronald McDonald House by donating an un-
wrapped gift at the Parade of Lights. Due to the immune suppressed nature of the children staying at the house, they cannot accept used toys. Suitable donations include gift cards of all kinds, clothes, toiletries, travel mugs, movie passes and more. Please feel free to contact Kim or Noelle at [email protected] for more information on recommended items.

To whom it may concern,
The Federation of Calgary Communities (the Federation) is the support organization to over 230 small non-profit organiza-tions, including Calgary’s 151 community associations. These 151 volunteer-run organizations positively impact the life of Calgarians every day by offering endless opportunities close to home, fostering a sense of belonging by bringing neighbours together, and being a voice for community life educating and informing residents on important issues and activities taking place in their neighbourhood.
One of the main tools community associations use to keep their residents informed on what’s going on in the community is their community newsletter. Calgarians have grown to rely on these monthly publications to find news and updates from their community association, City Councillor, provincial MLA, as well as other stakeholders like the City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and much more.
Community newsletters not only keep residents informed on important happenings, but they also help foster Calgary’s uniquely small town feel in our large, urban city. These month-ly newsletters have grown to include resident and volunteer profiles, showcasing neighbourhood assets, local business fea-tures, and more. In doing so, community newsletters truly help community associations work towards being hubs for neigh-bourhood life by showcasing the many people and places who make the community a great place to live, work, and play.
For over a decade, community associations have been fortu-nate enough to have their monthly community newsletter published and delivered for free by the publishing company. In recent years, with the economic decline in Calgary, this luxury is now at risk, with community newsletter publishers strug-gling to find advertisers to offset their costs, and Canada Post’s delivery fees continually rising.
The Federation of Calgary Communities believes that commu-nity newsletters are essential to community life here in Calgary, and we support the value they bring to all Calgarians, organiza-tions, businesses, and the city of Calgary as a whole. Without funding support or reduced delivery fees for community news-letter publishers to continue providing these monthly publica-tions for our city’s community associations at low or no cost, we are at risk of losing these essential resources that connect Calgarians to both their neighbourhood and their city.
Sincerely,Leslie Evans, Executive Director

Be sure to mark this day on your calendar for a wonder-ful way to celebrate the New Year with your family. 150 Dipsters clad in colourful crazy costumes will take the chilly dip to raise funds and awareness for the impor-tant work fighting sexual exploitation and human traf-ficking.
“It is a fun event for a very serious cause,” says Ross Weaver, Co-Founder of the Old Guys in Action and the Calgary Icebreaker who is doing his 10th dip. “40 million people live in slavery today, more than any other time in history. In Canada, the average age victims are tricked and trafficked into a life of sexual exploitation is 13! Five seconds of pain is nothing compared to what these children endure.”
If you want to support this important work there are many ways to get involved! The Calgary Icebreaker Po-lar Dip is looking for day of volunteers, event sponsors, prizes and most importantly donations to help encour-age the Dipsters. To donate to your favourite Dipster (about 100 are from Mahogany) or for more info go to www.calgaryicebreaker.com.
100% of funds raised are donated to the SA Foundation www.safoundation.com who have been caring for sur-vivors for 30 years.

I can’t believe we’re already into the last month of 2018. Decem-ber 21st marks the official beginning of winter and we all know that with winter comes snow. The City of Calgary will be work-ing hard to clear roadways, hundreds of kilometers of sidewalks along city-owned properties, and hundreds of kilometers of pathways throughout the City. The City is also asking for your help to keep us all moving in the snow. Please clear the side-walks adjacent to your property within 24 hours of the snowfall ending. And if you notice that someone in your community is having a tough time clearing the snow why not be a ‘Snow An-gel’ and help them out. For more information on the City’s snow clearing plan you can visit calgary.ca/snow or call 311.
But there’s more to December than just snow. With the holiday sea-son upon us I know that the communities of Ward 12 have been working hard to plan some fun events. Did you know that there are eight Community Associations and five Residents or Homeowners Associations in Ward 12 that organize community events all year
long? I know that in December we’ll be able to enjoy a parade, festi-vals of lights, a community dinner, and many other events. Why not reach out to one of these groups in your find out what is going on.
December is also a great time to reflect on the year that has passed and look ahead to the new year. Back in October we had our Or-ganizational Meeting of Council where we decided the member-ship for boards, commissions, and committees for the upcoming year. This year I’ll be sitting on the Standing Policy Committee on Transportation and Transit, the Standing Policy Committee on Utilities and Corporate Services, the Standing Committee on Priorities and Finance, the Event Centre Assessment Committee, the Inter-Municipal Committee for Foothills, the Public Art Board, and ENMAX. I’ll be working hard to keep the Green Line moving forward, keep a focus on community safety, and make decisions that bring you the best value for your tax dollars.
I wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season. Merry Christmas, happy New Year, and I’ll see you in 2019!
