Pastors Article for Zealant Dec 2019
And the Angel came to Mary and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with
you!... Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will
conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great
and will be called the Son of the Most High.” (Luke 1:28–32)
The mere presence of this Child in Mary’s womb made John leap for joy in his aged mother
Elizabeth’s womb. And when this Child was finally born, a multitude of angels announced His
birth to shepherds watching their flock by night. This was no ordinary Child.
What Child Is This? The angel answers the question this way in the presence of the
shepherds: “a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). The hymnwriter answers it this
way: “This, this is Christ the king” (LSB 370:1). They both want to leave us with no doubt
regarding the identity of this Child. Here, during this wonderful time of Advent, we here at Zion
will be partaking in a wonderful series of sermons and Bible studies titled “What Child Is This”.
The schedule for this series is:
Midweek 1: “The Child Who Is Zechariah’s Hope” (Is. 40:1-5; Lk. 1:5-25)
Midweek 2: “The Child Who Is a Virgin’s Great Son” (Judges 13:2-7; Lk. 1:26-38)
Midweek 3: “The Child Who Is John’s Joy” (2 Sam. 6:12-23; Lk.1:39-45)
Christmas Eve: “The Child Who Is The Lord” (Is. 9:2-7; Titus 2:11-14; Lk. 2:1-14)
Christmas Day: “The Word Became Flesh” (John 1:1-14)
Please note we’ll enjoy our now yearly “Congregational Christmas Celebration” during
worship on December 16th at 10:15 AM; and we’ll have treats for all the kids! We will be singing
many favorite Christmas carols and hymns, and of course, a light Christmas message…
During our Sunday morning Adult Bible Study, we will be using a resource following our
Advent theme this year, “What Child Is This?”. We hope you’ll come and enjoy this as well!
If you’ve not been to one of our Bible studies in a while, please come. We meet every
Sunday morning at 9 AM and every Thursday evening at 7 PM till 8:30 PM. Both offer a
delightful discussion (where you get to ask questions and hear your fellow members share their
thoughts too!) As your pastor, I come away many times from these discussions enlivened and
enriched too! So, consider this a formal invite to join us!
From Katie and I, our prayer and wish is that you all have a blessed and joyous Christmas
season! See you in church! Soon!

A Christmas Poem By Sheila Lutz
A shepherd sat on the cold dank ground in the deepest dark of night.
“What a lousy, lonely, unheralded job,” He mused, bemoaning his
plight. “King David was once a shepherd, too, But a shepherd-king? Just a tale long
ago. Sheepherding was now a menial job Held in regard so low. Nothing great would
happen to him here. In this quiet corner of the world; No kingdom to see; no fanfare
to hear.” Then, suddenly, the sky unfurled. An angel spoke. Fear gripped his heart.
More angels came-a throng! They sang and shouted of a Savior Babe; One instant
proved his thoughts wrong. So, stunned he was. “Is this a dream?” Angels praised,
sang, and said, “Go find the Babe in Bethlehem. A manger is his bed.” “Could this be
true? Angels spoke to me- God’s messengers came to my hill? It would be crazy to
believe my eyes, But I’ll go and do their will.” He ran, and all the angels said was
true. This was the Son of God. The message came to his dirty crew – Not to royals or
ones whom men laud. He ran again with joy in his heart telling great news- with
shepherds few. “The Messiah’s come!” they eagerly shared, “God’s promised
Salvation is true!” We like the shepherd in the darkness sit and wonder, “Can God
make my life great?” We worry and fret about what to do When we should but sit and
wait. He brings joy and salvation into our worlds. So, with angels and shepherds no
sing. “Salvation He brings! He changes my life!” Go! Tell the news of our God Baby
King!
