Professional Development for Werkman, Boven Team

Committed to Continuous Improvement Through Learning

The entire Werkman, Boven & Associates team attended

the Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine

Conference from November 8-10.

This year's program offered chiropodists, podiatrists, office

staff and other health professionals the opportunity to

attend a dynamic, education conference that is essential to

professional development. The CFPM conference is an

excellent opportunity for practitioners and assistants to

learn new skills and meet with peers.

We enjoyed lectures and workshops led by an impressive array of experts in various fields related to

podiatric medicine. The 2018 Conference had something for everyone with renowned international

speakers, interactive seminars, and hands on workshops. Topics included: diabetes, dermatology,

biomechanics, various equipment demonstration, etc.

In addition to attending the 3-Day CFPM Conference:

Kaitlyn Crewe and Kelley North completed St. John's Ambulance Standard First Aid - CPR C - AED

training.

Rick Werkman, Vicki Werkman, and Kaitlin (Werkman) Boven completed Heart & Stroke - Basic Life

Support (BLS) (CPR and AED) training.

We've also added a portable Automated External Defibrillator (AED) electronic device to our clinic. We are

prepared for every health emergency.

The Wound Care Certificate: Update for Chiropodists

Kaitlin (Werkman) Boven is enrolled in this program offered by the Health Leadership & Learning Network

at York University.

The program is focused on educating health care professionals working in wound care to be

knowledgeable, skilled and clinically prepared to assist individuals with chronic wounds.

What You Need to Know About Living with Diabetes! 85% of Amputations are Preceded by a Foot Ulcer!

November is Diabetes Awareness Month in Canada

Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb

amputation in Canadian adults, associated with approximately

70% of amputations performed in hospital.

"Compared to the general population, Canadian adults with diabetes are over 20 times more likely to

undergo non-traumatic lower limb amputations, 85% of which are preceded by a foot ulcer. Diabetes

foot ulcerations are often the result of diabetic neuropathy and/or peripheral vascular disease (poor

circulation/blood supply to the foot); they can become infected and result in amputations. Diabetes foot

complications place a tremendous emotional and financial burden on the individuals suffering from these

complications, their families and the health care system.

The prevention of amputations involves regular foot exams by patients with diabetes and health

professionals and evaluation of amputation risk, regular callus debridement, patient education,

professionally fitted therapeutic footwear, and early detection and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers."

Caring for Children with Diabetes Focused Footcare for Children with Diabetes!

Kids in general, but especially those living with

diabetes, are less likely to feel a foot injury, such as a

blister or cut. Left untreated, even small foot injuries

can quickly become infected, potentially leading to

serious complications. Diabetes can make injuries

more difficult to heal that’s why regular and

specialized footcare as well as education – is key!

We are here to help!

Chiropodists or Podiatrists specialize in

treating foot diseases, disorders and

dysfunctions.

Meet Kaitlin (Werkman) Boven,

Registered Chiropodist.

Kaitlin has earned a Master of Science in

Diabetes (MSc Diabetes) and is licensed

for nail surgery and local anesthesia. She

has an interest in treating patients of all

ages who are living with diabetes.

Encourage activity – everyday!

Ontario’s Physical Activity Guides for Children and Youth publishes guidelines on how much

activity your child needs every day. There are also many social, emotional and educational

benefits which foster:

Healthy bodies: Regular activity builds a healthy heart, burns excess energy to help

maintain a healthy weight and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes as well as other

chronic diseases.

Positive self esteem: Activity helps children feel good and try new skills.

Social skills: Group activity provides the chance to make friends, build confidence and

learn team-building skills.

Good mental health: Activity can reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

Better grades: Activity can improve memory, creativity and problem-solving.

Keep Children Healthy starting with a Daily Foot Care Routine

Put together a foot care kit containing nail clippers, nail file, lotion, and a non-breakable hand

mirror. Let your kids decorate the kit so it’s personalized to them. Keeping what you need

together in one place, where you use it, will make it easier for everyone.

Daily Family Foot Care Routine:

1. Wash your feet in warm (not hot) water, using a mild soap. Don’t soak your feet, as this

can dry your skin.

2. Dry your feet carefully, especially between your toes.

3. Thoroughly check your feet and between your toes to make sure there are no cuts, cracks,

ingrown toenails, blisters, etc. Use a hand mirror to see the bottom of your feet, or ask

someone else to check them for you.

4. Clean cuts or scratches with mild soap and water, and cover with a dry dressing suitable

for sensitive skin.

5. Trim your toenails straight across and file any sharp edges. Don’t cut the nails too short.

6. Apply a good lotion to your heels and soles. Wipe off excess lotion that is not absorbed.

Don’t put lotion between your toes, as the excessive moisture can promote infection.

7. Wear fresh clean socks and well-fitting shoes every day. Whenever possible, wear white

socks – if you have a cut or sore, the discharge/flow will be easy to see.

Advanced Treatment for Plantar Warts and Fungal Nails Swift Microwave Therapy System to Treat Plantar Warts Swift is a fast and easy microwave therapy system specifically designed for the treatment of

Plantar Warts. Now you can get rid of Plantar Warts for good!

How Microwave Therapy Works

Microwave energy rapidly elevates tissue temperature and creates precise, localized cell

destruction.

Page 6: December 2018 - Werkman

6

Figure 1

Infected tissue can exist several

millimeters below the surface and can

often be difficult to treat using

traditional methods, resulting in

either untreated tissue or significant

damage.

Figure 2

Swift delivers a precise, highly

controlled energy dose. As

microwaves travel into the tissue,

water molecules begin colliding and

creating localized heat energy –

quickly destroying all infected tissue

within a predetermined depth.

Figure 3

In just seconds the treatment is

complete, and the healing cascade

begins immediately. Treated tissue is

quickly replaced, repaired and

regenerated.

Benefits of Swift for Treatment of Plantar Warts

1. Shorter treatment times

2. Precision treatment

3. Innovation in safety

Fungal Nail Treatment for Healthy, Clear Nails Lunula Laser - The Touchless, Painless Solution!

We are proud to offer Lunula Laser, the easy and convenient treatment that helps turn

discoloured and disfigured (fungal) nails into clearer, healthier looking nails.

Onychomycosis (OM) is a chronic fungal infection of the nail plate, nail bed, or both. It is

estimated to affect nearly 10% of the general population, with the incidence rising sharply, to

nearly 30%, in patients over age 60.

Lunula utilizes two unique wavelengths that target OM’s complex patho-physiology. Lunula not

only destroys the fungal pathogen, it also improves circulation and strengthens the body’s

immune response.

What makes Lunula Laser different:

The only touchless, painless solution for fungal infection of the nail

No pain, no downtime, and no risk

No more embarrassment about unsightly feet

More about Lunula Laser

The Lunula Laser® is a revolutionary low-level

laser therapy that brings new hope to people

suffering from fungal nail infections

(onychomycosis).

Lunula Laser poses none of the risks and

harmful side effects of oral anti-fungal

medications and is painless!

If you suffer from fungal nail infections, you may want to take a peek at these Before & After

fungal nail infection clinical results photos. The results are amazing!
