What Christmas Is All About...

On December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas was broadcast for the first time on television. I was only 5 years old, but I know my family watched. Some network executives thought it would be ignored, while others worried that quoting the Bible would offend viewers. Some wanted its creator, Charles Schulz, to omit the Christmas story, but Schulz insisted it stay in. The program was an immediate success and has been rebroadcast every year since.

I have watched this Christmas Story every year for over 50 years. I don’t think it ever gets old because it’s one of the few shows on television that actually tells us about the true meaning of Christmas.

When Charlie Brown, the frustrated director of the children’s Christmas play, is discouraged by the commercial spirit of the holiday season, he asks if anyone can tell him the real meaning of Christmas. At that point, it’s Linus who recites Luke 2:8-14, which includes the words, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest,

8In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,

and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "“Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:

11to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

14"“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" (Luke 2:8-14)

and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (v. 11-14 KJV) Linus ends by saying, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

During this season that can be filled with our own doubts and dreams and materialism, let us ponder anew God’s great love expressed in the familiar story of Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, the shepherds, and angels. May we never forget what Christmas is REALLY all about! May Jesus our Savior be with all of us

in this holy season and forever…

Remember Your Church in your Estate Planning

Christ’s Lutheran has been blessed with many financial contributions over the years, both large and small. As you know, any amount helps to further the ministry of God’s church.

In your estate planning, have you thought about leaving an endowment or other offering to your church? These gifts help to carry on the ministry of the gospel in our community. Why not add your name to the list of faithful witnesses who remembered the church before you? Because of generous saints, our church has been sharing God’s love and grace for over 250 years!

Think about how much a gift to the church would mean to you, your family, and the Christ’s Lutheran Community.

For more information, contact Brian Fenstermacher or Joan Kratz.

Looking for the perfect

The Real Meaning of Christmas by Joan Clifton Costner

C is for the Christ Child and the child in all of us.

H is for the Heart of God, in Whom we place our trust.

R is for our Redeemer, Who is finished with His chore.

I is for Isaiah who had told it all before.

S is for the Shepherd, lowly shepherd who came to see.

T is for the Wise Men, who were wise beyond degree.

M is for a Manger, a simple manger where he lay.

A is for bright Angels who were standing by that day.

S is for the Star that shone and still shines out today!

Congregational Meeting Update!

2019 Council Election – We needed a total of 8 members to make a full 12-member council: 4 three year terms; 1 one year term, and 3 two year terms. Beth Bernabei, Nicole DeReiter, Cindy Fenstermacher, Kim Howatt, Amy Ruscavage & Frank Trainer were all elected to church council. We are so thankful for their willingness to serve God as council members!

2020 Proposed Budget – The 2020 proposed budget was approved with no changes.

Old Business: Pavilion Roof – Brian Fenstermacher gave an update on the roof. He was happy to report that the project came in under budget! All extra monies will be kept in a separate account for other capital improvements. Brian thanked everyone who helped in any way—by donating to the project, helping with the physical labor, and/or providing food and drink for the workers. Special thanks were given to Brian for coordinating this important project and Fred Reith for his invaluable knowledge and skills.

New Business: Christmas Tree - we talked about possibly buying an artificial tree for the sanctuary. We decided to have a live tree, but to buy a bag to put under the tree to help with clean up. We also suggested getting a skinnier tree that’s not as tall as previous years so that we might set up the chancel differently.

Kneelers - we were blessed to receive 2 kneelers from St. John’s, Quakertown. We looked at the kneelers from St. John’s alongside the kneeler we already have. We chose which 2 to keep, and the 3rd kneeler will be donated to St. John’s, Sumneytown. Both of these kneelers have cushions.

Annual Congregational Meeting – Sunday, February 2, 2020. Please save the date and join us as we review 2019!

Ministry Planning Meeting – Susan Trainer asked everyone who is able to gather in January to discuss our church’s mission plan for the coming year. The council will be setting the date for this gathering at their December meeting. We want to review what we are doing well, and maybe let go of some things that no longer fit our mission.

Thanks to all who were able to stay for this important meeting. We appreciate everyone’s input!

Yours in Christ, Susan Trainer

Thanksgiving Food Baskets

Once again, the Social Ministry Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to our Thanksgiving Food Baskets. Because of your help we were able to help over 60 families with Thanksgiving Dinner!

Special thanks to the Milford-Trumbauersville Democrats for their faithful food drives each month. We also offer special thanks to Leah Foster who organized a food drive in her neighborhood !

We are truly blessed!

Thanks & Giving

Sunday!

On Sundays, November 10th & 17th we celebrated the joy of giving thanks to God for the living saints and God’s many blessings. We took time to write thank you notes to the living saints in our lives. We also took time to offer our thanks to God in the form of our financial commitments. (Additional pledge cards are available on the wire rack in the narthex.)

We are most certainly blessed!

Once again this year we have the

opportunity to give a gift that will change

someone’s life! Through the ELCA’s Good

Gifts program — you can choose a

life-changing, charitable gift such as a goat,

water well, school fees, chicks, bees, etc. and

give a donation in honor of a friend or loved

one this Christmas! You may keep the orna-

ment to give/send to your

honoree so they know what gift was sent in

their name! All checks should be made pay-

able to CELC & be sure to write Good Gifts &

the chosen gift in the memo line. The cost of

the gifts begin as low as $10.

Christmas Angel Giving Tree

We're trying something new this year— we've been in contact with Grand View Hospital (thank you Teresa Maute-Carr!) and we're going to give them small Teddy Bears for the children that are in the hospital over the holidays. There will be 'Bear' tags on the tree for $5 - you can take a tag, put your name on it and attach cash/check and return to church. We will also have the Heifer International tags for chicks, pigs, etc.in different denominations as we've done previous years. Helping locally and worldwide. Items due by Dec. 15th!

Please contact Deb Nace or Joan Kratz for more information.

Enclosed in this newsletter is a Reverse Advent Calendar. Simply collect the suggested items in a box over the season & bring it to church on

Christmas Eve or the Sunday after. All items benefit our FEAST Pantry.

Thanks for your help!

We offer our Thanks to Phyllis Heckler for purchasing new attendance folders for our pews. It was past time to replace some of them.

Thanks Phyllis, for your generosity!

The Youth Group would like to thank everyone who supported our Hoagie Sale in November! We had fun making them & we hope you enjoyed them! Thanks!

The Presence Jar There is nothing more valuable than the gift of our time. On

the back of the Reverse Advent Calendar are 33 activities to cut apart and put in a jar.

Challenge yourself to do one tag a day for the season of

Christmas or Epiphany. Give the gift of yourself to yourself, your family, friends, or even your church.

Good Luck!
