PresidenT JULIE’S REPORT

OMG! What a fabulous lady! What a fabulous and professional show Pippa Wilson and Jazz Notes Showband brought to us – in spite of the hiccups leading up to the big day, which included a last minute change in venue from Power Boat Club to RSL (‘thank you’ Caloundra RSL for helping us out & PB Club), due to unforeseen circumstances – thanks so much for your patience and understanding - (Power Boat Club is still our home and this was a ‘one off’ in more ways than one) - having the Queen of Jazz perform an exclusive for our club – and such generosity in the extra time and encores – how could we better this? We promise ‘the best of the best’ and are living up to our promise. Next up is our Xmas party and much-loved CAXTON STREET JAZZ BAND, and your chance to dress up Gatsby or Xmas style – prizes to be won! Start planning and BOOK! 2020 Line-up is fantastic and to start the year off we will have the FABULOUS GALAPAGOS DUCK back! Woo Hoo! (This was SOLD OUT last time!)

November was a ‘double header’ of fabulous jazz, with the wonderful Jindalee Jazz Orchestra here for another first, quickly followed by our big FAMILY DAY with YOUTH’N JAZZ Bursary finalists performing with flair, and so much talent - as they were backed by such experienced musos “Inspiration Point” led by Russell Bayne – the young finalists were in music heaven and showed us that the coast is in for some wonderful entertainment in years to come and that Jazz is ‘alive and well’ on the Coast. Next year we will have the experience behind us to bring an even bigger and better “YOUTH’N JAZZ” Bursary adventure after our first go this year. Congratulations to the winners – they were all winners in their own style – and a big THANK YOU to our judges, Rick Best (Sweet Thunder) Mark Watkins (Jindalee Jazz Orchestra) and Trev Chalk – master musician.

Don’t forget that Annual Membership fees are now due - $20 – to 31 December 2020 – Thanks.

Christmas Greetings and Blessings from John and I and the Management team. My thanks to our wonderful Management Committee for their support through the past year – and to YOU! Julie

RICHARD WROTE! REVIEWS A change of venue ,a great stage, the best 6 musicians, The Jazz Notes Showband, (3 from Victoria & 3 from Queensland),AND the wonderful PIPPA WILSON, the Melbourne Queen of R&R, Soul & Jazz .The set opened with the Jazz Notes playing “All The Things You Are” & the Shearing classic “Lullaby of Birdland” This bracket allowed each of the musicians to demonstrate their individual brilliance. Then on stage came the lady we were waiting for -PIPPA,PIPPA (yeah)swung straight into a bracket of favorites. “Chasing the Blues Away”,”Sunny Side of the Street” and “As Time Goes By” featuring a glorious trumpet solo from Peter Uppman, which melted a few hearts. With “It's a Wonderful World “ & “Blues in the Night “ PIPPA gave full feelings and to her jazz soul and voice. The set finished with a jumpin' - thumpin' “After You've Gone” with changes in tempo and great solos from every member of the Jazz Notes. Set two couldn't come quickly enough. 'I Cried for You” a rip roaring “St. Louis Blues” and the beautiful Ballad “What a Difference a Day Makes” had the appreciative large audience applauding loudly. The finish was coming with “Deed I Do”. Not enough for the crowd, they were wanting an encore! PIPPA &The Jazz Notes certainly did that with “The Beginning of the Blues”. The appreciative audience gave a well deserved, thank you, standing ovation for PIPPA WILSON & THE JAZZ NOTES SHOWBAND and “Allelulah!”. Thanks to the SCJC for another outstanding jazz afternoon. Brian Fane. Sunshine Coast Jazz Club Life Member JNINDALEE JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The 16 member Jindalee Jazz Orchestra hit the first note of the Glenn Miller classic “American Patrol” and

the feet were tapping ,the heads bobbing in time. Yes, we all know Glenn Miller's music. What followed was a

recreation of some of the big band swing music. “Take the A Train”, Garner's classic “Misty”, Miller's theme

“Moonlight Serenade” and Dizzy Gillespie's “Night in Tunisia”, Miles Davis “Nardis” and “Fly Me to the

Moon” rounded off the first set. These musicians play with authority and the solos were top class. The second

set included the Davis standard “Freddie the Freeloader” and a beautiful Flugelhorn solo on “Summertime”

from Ed Kennedy. The Basie “Moten Swing” was given a nice medium tempo beat featuring the young

keyboard player. “Spanky” one of the themes from the TV show “The Odd Couple” led the orchestra into

Mercer Ellington's {the Duke's son} final showpiece 'Things Ain't What They Used to Be”, a rollicking big

band arrangement that swung like crazy and the dancers swingin' and swayin'. Oh Yeah!! Nothing better in

music then a big band swinging and the Jindalee Jazz Orchestra is one of the best. Come on back Jindalee

Jazz Orchestra. Brian Fane Sunshine Coast Jazz Club Life Member
