Whereas in a typical year we're challenged to remain engaged with the outside world while also staying safe and warm inside, this year we're prepared. With months of quarantines and online shopping, we've learned how to stay engaged from a distance in more ways than ever before. But that doesn't mean that we ignore what life is like -or will be like- in public. The Gemara (Brachot 55b) learns from Yosef's interpretations that an interpreter can dictate not only how to think of a dream, but the actual future reality. When Yosef interpreted the butler's dream positively and the baker's dream negatively, he effectively made it so in real life (according to literal understanding of the Gemara). Surely, however, Yosef did not arbitrarily determine to give a fruitful interpretation to the butler and not the baker. What was his reason for doing so? When we look closely at the two dreams of the butler and the baker, what we find is not only that they dreamt of different foods, but that each food was used differently. The butler takes a vine of grapes and squeezes them into Paroh's cup. The baker, on the other hand, envisioned baskets of baked goods on his head, from which birds were eating (Bereishit 40:9- 17). Both the butler and baker were involved in their previous jobs. (continued on next page)

Rabbi Shaya Katz

Last month, we noted how the winter season was less daunting as usual. The baker, on the other hand, envisioned baskets of baked goods on his head, from which birds were eating (Bereishit 40:9-17). Both the butler and baker were involved in their previous jobs. (continued on next page)

The fundamental difference between them, however, is what they were doing. The baker, while passively holding the baskets, dreamed of birds taking away from his inventory, detracting from his responsibilities. In contrast, the butler was actively engaged in doing his job, he dreamed of fulfilling his responsibility. In determining the meaning and interpretation of their dreams, Yosef saw within the butler the yearning to return to his previous commitments. The baker, while also dreaming of his job, did not have that sense of hope, commitment, or yearning. When rewarding them with their destiny, Yosef revealed the butler's successful future based on his current, personal vision for himself. The baker's lack of willingness to serve as he once did was what determined his own demise. In some ways we're stuck at home due to cold or COVID, but that doesn't mean we resign to the passivity of life. We don't see our current predicament as the definition of our future. We still yearn and dream of the time we can return to our full capacity, with a full slate of in-person programming. As Yosef tells the prisoners, "behold, Hashem has interpretations" (40:8). Hashem is looking upon us, too, and interpreting what we yearn for. If we properly envision ourselves with our previous commitments, with our active and unrestricted service to Hashem and each other, then we pray that He too, will make that our reality. With the right perspective, IyH, our dreams will come true. Rabbi Katz
