BY JIM STOKESYelp is a website and mobile app that connects people with local businesses. The com-

pany’s trendy new 150,000-square-foot office environment in the Flatiron District across from Madison Square Park features a Manhattan skyline view. The salesforce drives profits upward in this lighthearted, tech-heavy environment (see sidebar, “Casual Collaboration”). Thus, staff work in collaborative spaces designed to stimulate creativity and conversation.

‘Word Of Mouth’

Founded in 2004, Yelp has taken root in countries across the globe, making it the leading local guide for word of mouth on everything from boutiques and mechanics to restaurants and dentists. The site has an emphasis on dining and nightlife. The Yelp community is com-prised of locals who connect online and off to share their opinions about local businesses.

In 2008, Yelp expanded from its corporate headquarters in San Francisco to the east coast by opening a New York City office. A Canadian version of the site was also launched that same year. And in 2009, Yelp expanded to the UK market and later to France, Spain and Austria. In 2012, the company went public and also acquired one of its main competitors, Qype. Yelp currently provides reviews in 32 countries. The company had a monthly aver-age of 89 million visitors who visited the site via their mobile devices in the third business quarter of 2015.

AV Overview

Our interviewees are Joseph Fusaro, CTS, Vice President Senior Sales Executive, and JoAnn Arcenal, Director of Public Engagement, from designer/integrator McCann Systems based in Edison NJ (www.mccannsystems.com). Mike Tober, IT Site Support Technician of Yelp’s New York office (www.yelp.com), gives the client AV perspective. Fusaro col-laborated closely with his design team to engineer the new work space. Alan Kipnis was Project Manager.

“McCann did a project for Yelp in the past for a couple of floors in its previous New York City building,” said Fusaro. “Yelp’s standards come out of its headquarters in San Francisco. The initial concept started in September 2014, and we completed engineer drawings in the

middle of November. From the beginning of cable pull to the completion of com-missioning, it was three months.”

Several Dozen Collaborative Spaces

In the new install, the integrator provided AV for several dozen collaborative spaces, including huddle, conference and videoconferencing rooms within the 14th and 16th floors. A number of displays, codecs and amplifiers, brought over from a previous site, were combined with new equipment.

Each collaboration area is controlled independently via a Crestron seven-inch TSW-750 tabletop touchscreen. The user interface is identical across each space for seamless setup and ease of use, even for last-minute meetings. Room schedul-ers are essential in this fast-paced environment to avoid overbooking. The cus-tom program is integrated with the company’s email and calendar software so reservations can be made quickly from each user’s workstation or at each site’s doorway-mounted Apple iPad mini.

Challenges & Solutions

Fusaro explained in detail challenges and solutions in the Yelp AV project. “A challenging component was the distributed video and audio system across two floors,” he said. McCann provided a system to distribute content to displays and speaker zones across both. “Due to the size of the floors, we couldn’t centralize the system. We have equipment spread among four IDF closets. All IDF closets are interconnected with OM3 fiber for both audio and video distribution.”

In order to provide flexibility and future expansion of content distribution to the displays, McCann used Crestron DM routers. This will allow for growth in distributing more sources and updating to 4K. “Due to some necessary equipment

The medium videoconference rooms feature a variety of 50-inch and 60-inch displays, along with video communication systems.

choices, we designed and installed a CobraNet audio network,” said Fusaro. “In the future, the infrastructure can be used for up-grading to an AVB or Dante network for audio networking needs.

“The biggest challenge came with integrating the Large Train-ing Room with the content distribution system (CDS). Yelp has a monthly ‘All Hands’ meeting that requires more seating than the LTR can provide. We added a connection to the CDS and a simple means of turning this feature on and off for the Yelp IT team. Cur-rently, the ‘All Hands’ meeting is broadcast beyond the LTR to other Sharp displays and the adjacent speaker zones beyond the

retracting walls of the LTR. As Yelp’s ranks grow and attendance increases, it will require a simple update to expand across the entire CDS, one section at a time, as necessary.”

Another challenge was handling the installation while other construction was going on in the building. Equipment and crews had to be moved between floors. “The limitation of freight eleva-tors became a factor because other construction crews were using the same bank of elevators,” said Fusaro.

Yelp’s Mike Tober is part of a team of four people in the new office. Regarding installation challenges, there was the yeomen’s task of moving equipment from the old location at 100 Fifth Avenue to 11 Madison Avenue. One floor wasn’t even ready when they moved into the new location.

“We had to do it in two phases,” he said. “Working all that out and trying to get the AV up and running in both sites was a big challenge. That was back in January 2015 when we moved out of there. Basically, you have your users leaving the [Fifth Avenue] office on Friday and coming to a new destination on Monday. You have to figure out how many conference rooms are needed here and how many conference rooms are still required to get by in the old space. Then you still have to bring over the new equipment.

The large videoconference rooms, featuring 60-inch flatscreens, are similar in AV build to the medium videoconference rooms, with the addition of ceiling microphones to cover the larger area.

Page 5: December 21, 2015 NEW YORK STATE OF MIND€¦ · all the local networks.” LVCs Have Same AV Build The large videoconferencing rooms have the same AV build as the medium video-conferencing

Some speakers had to be brought down because we have music throughout both floors.” There are separate zones for the 14th and 16th floors, with volume controls so staffers can turn the music down or off, as appropriate.

Most rooms have Sharp dual HD display monitors on Chief mounts, so participants can share content and view video feeds. Display screen size varies depending on room size and application. As mentioned, some rooms are Crestron touchscreen controlled.

SCRs Have Basic AV

The small conference rooms (SCR and SCR+) feature basic AV. The tables have Extron HDMI extensions for laptop presen-tations. These huddle rooms accommodate four to six participants. Taking an overview of webcasting capabilities, combinations of Dell Google Chromebox and Lifesize 220 series videoconferencing systems are found in the various SCR, SCR+, medium videoconference rooms (MVC) and large videoconference rooms (LVC), as well as the Executive Board Room and the Large Training Room. Yelp brought about six Life-size systems from its previous location, and McCann supplied the rest.

Specifically, four SCR+ rooms are equipped with a Dell Google Chromebox, an accompanying PTZ camera, microphone and speaker for webcasting. In addition, one LVC has a dual-screen Google Chrome-box advanced system, whereas the normal Google Chromebox will only support one screen.

Tober noted that the advanced version was used recently for the first time. “I find the dual-screen version a little better than the Lifesize [videoconferencing system],” said Tober. “It’s clearer. We had about 15 remote participants on all dif ferent platforms. We had laptops, other Google Chromebox rooms and other videoconfer-encing rooms.”

The MVCs offer more sophisticated AV displayed on the monitors. The tables have a Lifesize Express 220 codec with an HD PTZ camera connected to an Extron HDMI extender for videoconferencing.

On the audio side for each room, two ClearOne ceiling microphones are used with a Biamp TesiraFORTÉ DSP with echo cancellation and VoIP capability for tele-phone conferencing. Two Innovox FS-V2

slim vertical speakers are side mounted by the displays. They’re driven by an Extron two-channel amplifier.

Crestron control equipment includes a DM-MD6x4 matrix switcher and a touch-screen controller. The D-Link DGS-1008G eight-port Gigabit switch was used for networking. “We wanted to create a local network for each room,” Fusaro pointed out. “So, they are all standalone rooms. D-Link makes a nice, slim 1Gb switch. We never had any trouble passing any kind of communication through it. Thus, we made

it standard to place one in each room for all the local networks.”

LVCs Have Same AV Build

The large videoconferencing rooms have the same AV build as the medium video-conferencing rooms with the exception of three ClearOne ceiling microphones be-cause the areas to be covered are larger.

The 16th-floor Executive Board Room seats more than two dozen participants. Because of its large size, it has dual 80-inch Sharp monitors to ensure good sightlines

everywhere. There’s a DM scaler for each display.

A major highlight of the room is the Crest-ron AM-100 AirMedia Presentation Gateway for in-room presentations, which offers wire-less connectivity. Up to four participants can present content securely from a laptop or a mobile device using the AirMedia.

“They have the option of using the AM-100 because the Board Room has a much larger table than the other rooms,” said Fusaro. “Otherwise, people have to crawl from one side of the table to the other just to plug in their laptop. The DM-TX-201-Cs are our two table boxes along the Board Room table for those who don’t want to use the wireless or are close enough that it’s convenient to plug in. It can be cumbersome. So, there’s the wireless option.” Videoconferencing is via the larger Lifesize Room 220 codec with accompanying PTZ camera.

On the audio side, four ClearOne micro-phone ceiling mics feed into the Biamp Tes-iraFORTÉ DSP, which has an EX-IN expander to accommodate more input sources. There’s one large Innovox Soundbar that goes across both Sharp displays. “It has a recess in it for the camera to sit in,” said Fusaro. There are eight Bose DS 16F pendant-mounted ceiling speakers. Speakers are driven by a Crown amplifier.

“For this room, we needed to use [Crest-ron] DM connectivity,” said Fusaro. “So we chose the DMPS-300-C because it was flexible enough to fit all the connectivity we needed and it had the control processor imbedded. It was quite a distance to and from the laptop inputs.” Networking is via D-Link.

Large Training Room

Although we previously introduced the Large Training Room, we’ll now present the AV in more detail. The room was designed for flexible use during the monthly “All Hands” meeting, which can be extended to other view-ing rooms throughout the facility and locations worldwide, as needed. The LTR can seat 80 participants.

“We have a first of the month Monday morn-ing meeting,” explained Tober. “There are about 750 to 800 people in this room and the adjoining cafeteria/open space for overflow meetings.” Overflow areas are served with additional monitors and speakers.

Fusaro explained that the presenter has a choice of two presentation systems. Content can be displayed on two large Sharp displays

Casual CollaborationOur tour of Yelp’s New York office was a journey into a casual workplace experience like no other. It was quite different from the main lobby in the massive building across from Madison Square Park, which has an elegant, 1940s movie look, complete with a security desk and elevator guides. You might expect to see Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers break into a surreal dance sequence in this setting. At Yelp’s 16th-floor reception desk, I was greeted by an airman in a vintage jumpsuit and a witch. Indeed, it was the day before Halloween. “Even though everyone is in costume [here] for Halloween, it’s like this any other time,” said JoAnn Arcenal, CTS, Director of Public Engagement at McCann Systems. “It’s a community. It’s really just soft-shirt collaboration here, regardless of what walls are between individuals. You really do see the community, the collaboration with the departments. It’s very unique. I think a lot of bigger businesses are going to be headed toward this model rather than the suit and tie and briefcase every day.” “We have a celebration when a deal is made over the phone,” affirmed Yelp IT Techni-cian Mike Tober. “Yelp consists of all different teams, with probably 12 to a team. The person who made the deal will hit a gong and everyone cheers and applauds. It hypes up the whole room. If the business owner is on the phone, he gets excited, too.” Yelp kept the New York setting in the forefront by naming rooms for sections of the city and popular landmarks. For instance, we initially met tour guide Mike Tober in the Harlem Apollo LVC (large videoconference room), which features a brass chandelier centerpiece. Other rooms in the Harlem area of the office are named for the Rucker Park basketball court and the Cielo building. Other LVCs are dubbed McCarren Park and Dominos Sugar in the Brooklyn section of the office, Delmonico’s and protester’s Zuccotti Park in the Financial District section, and Battery Park and CBGB music club in the East Village section. Furthermore, the color-coded lines on the floor outside the rooms represent neighbor-hoods in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. And vertical mounted lights on the outside room walls represent lights in the old subway stations that would indicate approaching trains. Arcenal observed that videoconferencing equipment is getting less expensive. “People used to spend tens of thousands of dollars on videoconferencing,” she said. “There can be encryption and security issues with doing something like Skype, but as the technol-ogy evolves and becomes more affordable, there’s really no way you’re going to escape technology and collaboration. Everyone is cutting down on travel costs, cutting down on the time. Everyone is more productive as everything evolves.”

The Large Training Room can seat 80 people, but information for meetings can be extended to other viewing rooms locally and worldwide, as needed.

or on two Da-Lite projection screens fed by two NEC 7000 lumen projectors, which were installed by McCann.

There’s a Crestron scaler for each pro-jector and display. And each display has a place to plug in the presenter’s laptop. A podium can be brought in for the pre-senter. In addition, an AM-100 AirMedia is provided for wireless connectivity.

At the heart of the control equipment is a Crestron DM-MD8x8 router. “We’ve pretty much maxed that out,” said Fusaro.

“We ended up using a Lifesize Room 220 for videoconferencing rather than the Ex-press 220s used in the conference rooms because there are two cameras, both ex-tended, for use with the Room 220, includ-ing an audience camera and a presenter camera,” said Fusaro. “If they’re doing town hall meetings, they’ll use the audience camera. For webcasting a training session or presentation, they’ll use the presenter camera.”

Testing Phase

At press time, Tober said the AM-100 was still in the “testing phase” at Yelp. “We’re just getting into using the AirMe-dia because we already have some network configurations change with cross VLANs. That is actually in progress. I’ve used the AirMedia before, and I think it’s fantastic. It’s a little tricky because it has that delay, so you have to look at your laptop screen rather than at the presentation screen when you are presenting because it will kind of throw you off.”

Regarding microphones in the LTR, six ClearOne ceiling mics ensure participants’ maximum voice pickup in the room. This room is equipped with two Biamp Tesira-FORTÉ DSPs. “We have voice interface as well,” explained Fusaro. “We have a second mixer because of the size of the room and the number inputs needed. We cross con-nected [the DSPs] because we have wire-less mics in the room.” Sennheiser wireless mics used on the floor include one hand-held and two lavaliers.

There are 12 ceiling-mounted Bose DS 16F speakers. Bose DS 100SEs are mount-ed on either side of the projection screens. A single Crown CTs 4200A amplifier drives the speakers.

Regarding audio equipment in the open areas of both floors, there are about 490 various-model Bose speakers for zoned distributed audio driven by Crown am-plifiers and interlinked on a CobraNet network. There’s a separate Biamp Au-diaFLEX CM DSP feed for the 14th and the 16th floors. “For this particular applica-tion, there’s the EXPO-4 CobraNet output expander, connected to an amplifier that does not have a CobraNet card built in,” said Fusaro. “Some of the amplifiers have built-in CobraNet cards and they get their audio directly from CobraNet.”

“The facility’s audio system distributes a music channel,” Fusaro pointed out. “Mu-sic is a big aspect of the Yelp environment. Whenever you walk into their offices, you always hear music, typically more modern music at a good volume level. It’s not in the background; it’s really more in the forefront.”
