T oday we celebrate the Nativity of the Lord. The preparations of Advent are complete and for many of us the Christmas season has begun. We welcome the light of the world into our hearts, our families and our homes. We call on the Light to bring peace and understanding to our world. Each of us has significant stories that we share in our families. These are stories that define who we are and how we got here. The Christmas Story is our story. God loved us so much he came into the world to be with us. None of us is ever alone. Our God walks with us and guides us. We celebrate the gift of “God with us” with great joy. Merry Christmas. I would like to take a moment to thank all of you who have given so generously to our “Giving Tree” and our food drives over the holidays. We may not always think it is a lot to pick up an extra gift when we are out shopping, or fill another bag of groceries when we do our own holiday shopping, but for families that our stressed and in need it means everything. Sometimes your generosity is the difference between a Christmas, and no Christmas. I hear the other end of this story from so many who have received your generosity. It means everything. And just so you know, individuals do write thank you notes, some- times years later with a gift as they try and pay it forward. On their behalf, thank you! I also would like to thank all of our choirs, musicians and Joanne for the beautiful liturgies we celebrate today and throughout the Christmas season. We are blessed to have such good music and talent every week, but over the holidays we really pull out the stops. Thanks also to all our liturgical ministers who help our celebrations run so smoothly. Thanks also to those who helped decorate our church for the Christmas season. Lots of hands make the load less difficult. Another thanks go out to all the choir members and parishioners who got together last week for our sing along. The weather has been frightful, but I heard the singing was delightful. These are memories that stick with us over the years. Thanks for a fun evening of Christmas music. On behalf of Fr. O’Mara, Fr. Tom, myself and all the staff we wish you all a Joyous Christmas. Notes from Fr. “O house of Jacob, come,

Let us walk in the light of the Lord”

We heard this phrase from the prophet Isaiah on the first Sunday of Advent. Isaiah is the prophet of hope not only for Israel, but for all of us as well. Each and every one of us is called to walk in the light of the Lord, and more importantly is called to be the light of the Lord in our families, workplaces, schools and communities. As a nation we have completed a long grueling election cycle. The darkness and shadows that sometimes haunted the campaigns have seeped into our daily lives. The heaviness seems hard to shake, but once again Isaiah offers us an alternative… “Come walk in the light of the Lord.”

Each year as we gather with family and friends to celebrate Christ coming into the world, we celebrate light winning over darkness. The decorations in our homes and churches remind us that in these long nights of winter, light is still our driving force. Jesus’ birth into the Holy Family was a reminder that God’s light and presence is still with us. In God there is only light. That is what we once again celebrate in this Christmas season. The light of Christ shines on each of us.

This year the light of Christ continues to shine on the St. Kieran community. Through the efforts of St. Kieran Outreach Committee we have fed those who are hungry through our monthly food drives. At Thanksgiving a number of families were able to celebrate with a complete dinner provided by the parish, and the parish Giving Tree has brought a light to those who may not be able to afford what we so often take for granted during the holidays. Our Ministers of Care continue to bring the light of Christ to our homebound and sick.

I also want to shine a light of gratitude on all of you who support the parish through financial support and ministries. Through the Teach Who Christ Is Campaign, the Annual Catholic Appeal, and your weekly offerings and gifts we continue to keep the parish strong and alive. Our Choir has grown and provides wonderful music for our Sunday celebration as well as other events throughout the year. Our parishioners have made events like the parish picnic, Halloween party, and Coffee Shop a regular part of the parish life. Together we bring light and life to the parish.

On behalf of Fr. O’Mara, Fr. Tom, our parish staff and myself we wish you all a bright Christmas season and beyond. Join us as we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Parish News & Events

December 2016 Dear Friend of St. Kieran’s Church, The St. Kieran Women’s Club organization has been an important part of the Chicago Heights community for the past 54 years. The women’s club was originally established to serve the members of St. Kieran Parish as well as surrounding communities. Our work provides financial and personal support to St. Kieran Parish, the St. Kieran religious education department, the St. Kieran Cares program and the works founded by Catholic Charities. In the community we have supported; P.A.D.S, the American Cancer society, and local food banks. Every year we struggle to decide what support we can fund because of our financial limitations. Yearly we receive over fifty requests for financial support and turn down 2/3’s of those requests. It is our goal to be able to fulfill an additional number of requests this year. Your support matters With your generosity and support, the St. Kieran Women’s club can continue to provide additional financial support for programs within our parish and throughout the community. This year, funds raised at the our Mardi Gras will be used to continue to support programs such as the ones mentioned above, as well as the many additional programs asking for our assistance. Enclosed you will find a sponsorship/silent auction donation form that outlines the details. 2017 Mardi Gras This year we will be holding a Mardi Gras event on February 25, 2017. This event will be open to the members of St. Kieran Parish and the surrounding communities, and is our organizations main fundraiser for the year. We are seeking sponsors for this event as well as items to be used in our raffle baskets. We hope you will consider supporting the Women’s Club this year and help us make a difference in the lives of many. On behalf of the St. Kieran Women’s Club and parish we would like to thank you for your support. Please know that your donation, at any level, is greatly appreciated and will be used to support programs in St. Kieran church and throughout the community. Please reply no later than January 9 2017 for appropriate acknowledgment of your support. If you have any questions, please contact a member of our Executive Board.
