Dr. Bruce SweetPAdRE’S CORNER

In the faith this is the time of year when we talk about many Bible passages dealing with the birth of Jesus. One of these is found in the first chapter of John: And the Word became flesh and lived among us...I am always looking for places where I see the Word becoming flesh in the world. Where do we observe love, forgiveness, mercy and grace being lived out in people's lives? I'm sure it happens a lot but these are not usually the kinds of stories that make it onto the news. As I write this the items dominating the newscasts are about the Senate scandal as well as the activities at Toronto City Hall. So, if it's not going to be on the news, maybe it's up to us to pay special

attention to these events when we see them occurring in our own daily lives. Would we feel comfortable in saying something to the person who has enabled the Word to become flesh? And would we be inspired to act in the same spirit? I also found this on the Internet: The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010-2012. Almost all the hungry people, 852 million, live in developing countries, representing 15 percent of the population of developing counties. There are 16 million people undernourished in developed countries (FAO 2012). I don't present this to make us feel guilty.

Indeed, I am very grateful for the country in which we live and for our overflowing bounty. I also wonder, however, how to best share it. during the season of Advent in the Christian Church we prepare for the birth of Christ in our lives. This year Advent is december 1-23. How does the story of this birth continue to happen today? The story is most real when it happens to, and within, us. Here are a few websites I found that speak to this: Welcome | Random Acts of Kindness http://www.randomactsofkindness.org/Word Made Flesh http://www.wordmadeflesh.org/With this I wish you a Merry Christmas and great joy as you experience the Word becoming flesh.

404 WING POPPY CAMPAIGN 2013 Sid Kenmir & Vic Snowden, 404 Wing Poppy Co-Chairs

I am very pleased to report that 404 Wing had a terrific Poppy Campaign this year, we hit the magic $12,000.00 mark for the first time ever. With more volunteers we could have hit the $15,000.00 level, the money is out there just for the taking. Our total cash for 2013 is $12,000.00 compared to $10,565.00 in 2012, putting us up $1,435..00. I think the 404 Wing members and non-members did a super job of canvassing this year at Conestoga

Mall Food Court & Zehrs store in the Conestoga Mall and our local Sobey’s store. A big thank you to: Vic & Pat Snowden, Richard Setka, Harvey Fry, Peter Sumlick, , they went out tagging at least three times, this brings the money in a lot faster. Richard Setka collected the most money this year, he collected $2,387.33 on many, many trips out to the Conestoga Mall Zehrs Store and Food Court. He had some 4 hour shifts and some 2 hour shifts, he went out tagging whenever he had some spare time. This is what I call dedication, thank you so much Richard. The following 404 Wing members and non-members also gave up their valuable time and went out tagging at least once, most went out twice: Brenda Stamp, Anna May Trapp, Ada Monaghan, Terry Bruce, dell Budd, Ross Knill, Jim & david Playford, Ron Beaudreau, Skye van Ess, Garry & donna Kuehl, Ken Gawthorn, Ernie dyck, dick Trussler, Aline McCubbin, Paul Peel, Michelle Leschak and dennis Villeneuve. Let me know if I forgot anyone.Ken Gawthorn of Unit 52 KVA went out for two shifts at the Conestoga Mall Zehrs Store and brought in $1,443.49 and he isn’t even a member of 404 Wing, thanks for helping us Ken.I would like to thank my wife Marlene, Bob Young, Elizabeth Maurer, Gib Newman, Aline McCubbin and Paul Peel for giving up most of their valuable Saturdays and other times to count money.Larry Allenson and Lucia Power took counter top Poppy boxes to their places of work and brought in $183.84, every bit helps, thank you for being so thoughtful.I think the public was very generous this year because 404 Wings number of volunteers was way down. We need more volunteers in 2014 to keep me from getting ulcers from looking at all of the empty spaces on our Tagging Schedules. This year, a lot of the money came in from canvassers on the first and second week-ends, maybe we’ll try to get more canvassers out on those two week-ends of the 2014 Poppy Campaign. In 2014, I would like to see way more Wing volunteers and more Wing members opting for more shifts, this really increases the final total. It would really be nice if we had so many volunteers that we could spend more time at Sobey’s Store at Northfield drive and Weber Street North, which is also in 404 Wing’s territory. Thanks to all of you once again,
