only for a very short while, but it was our corporate folks who alerted us locally here in Houston about the massive amount of traffic we were getting. They called and asked, “What is this high school voting thing you guys are doing?” So was the promotion the bigger draw than the band? “Probably,” Chiang says. “But I do have to say that demand this year was way higher than in previous years. And I do credit Eli Young Band for that, as they are huge here in Texas. Most of the cheerleading squads managed to work EYB into their custom KKBQ cheer.” And now you know the rest of the story.

No RADAR Love The Media Rating Council has withdrawn its accreditation for Arbitron’s RADAR (Radio’s All Dimension Audience Research) and nationwide network and national radio audience services. The withdrawal is effective with RADAR 107, set to release Dec. 13, and with the Fall 2010 nationwide report, scheduled for release in early March 2011. The reason given was because the two services incorporate data from an increasing number of PPM markets that are not yet accredited by the MRC. Dial Global President/Operations Charles Steinhauer took the news in stride, noting, “We believe the marketplace has accepted this data as currency, and will continue to utilize (them) as Arbitron works (towards) accreditation for PPM and its data-dependent services.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life

Mercury’s Southwest Regional Jill Brunett discusses her most influential songs, albums or concerts:1. Paul Simon, Graceland: My parents listened to it all the time on road trips when I was younger, and it was the only CD my college roommate and I could agree on. It’s always the album I choose when asked, ‘What’s the one album I’d bring with me if I were stranded on a deserted island?!’2. Jamey Johnson, That Lonesome Song: I

must have listened to “High Cost Of Living” over 1,000 times after I first heard Jamey perform it in our suite at CRS. By far one of the best country albums in years.3. U2 at Soldier Field: I wasn’t the biggest U2 fan, but a couple friends and I went up to Chicago for [their concert]. We had tickets for the field, and it was one of the most fun nights ever. I snuck up right next to the stage and was so close I thought I felt Bono’s sweat drip on me.4. Patty Griffin at the Ryman: I will see Patty at the Ryman every time she’s there. Last time I saw her, she performed her new gospel album and was joined by Emmylou Harris and Lee Ann Womack. Talk about goosebumps. That was my heaven right there.5. Ben Folds “The Luckiest:” I’ve seen Ben Folds more times than I can count. This is my favorite love song of all time. The last verse explains it all so well and so simply.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, Phish. I do not like jam bands.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Pearl Jam’s Ten. I still love it to this day.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More. The whole album is amazing.

Not Your Average Co. (continued from page 1) Average Joes has a roster full of acts that are playing 200 dates a year, building that fan base and selling music from the live experience. Money is

already being made, consistently, and now we have the opportunity to ramp it up with radio airplay. We’re going to partner with Country radio. How so?This isn’t about charts. It’s not about jamming records to the top. We all want to do that, and I’ve done my share. But the larger idea is to be able to build the artists with radio in these towns so they can play live. That live, communal experience is the one piece that can’t be attained with all the smartphone applications, streaming and all the rest. There’s nothing like being in that building with 1,000 people, 5,000 people, 60,000 people singing those songs.

Shannon and Colt are at the core of it. There might have been some investment when it was started four years ago, but it wouldn’t have been a large sum. It’s built from Colt’s tour, and he’s now at the point where he’s sold 1 million downloads and north of 600,000 records. That’s nothing to sneeze at. Beyond that is what he’s doing with tickets, particularly in the Southeast. He’s selling 7,000 to 8,000 tickets. I saw Corey Smith a couple nights ago at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge and there were 1,000 people in there singing the words to every song. And I’ve never heard of him before! But I’m watching this young 18-25 demo going crazy and having a great time. That’s why we all got into this business in the first place. Now that you’ve got this team in place, what’s the next step?Fun fact: Tony Morreale was announced at Columbia and I was announced at BNA in the exact same edition of Hot Fax back in October 1993. And Tony and I worked together at BNA for eight years. Joe Schuld manages Jerrod Niemann, but also has background in Active Rock and Rock promotion for Columbia. Gwen Foster and Jay Cruze bring extensive radio experience. It’s an eclectic group with a lot of diverse skills, so what we’re trying to do now is take that extra piece that we’ve got in our relationships – whether it’s Rock or Country – and stoke the fire a little more. We’ve got DMAs and regions where these acts are touring and selling without airplay. Imagine what happens when we drive that, when we go to CMT and GAC and add all the other pieces. What can we expect as far as music? The first things people will see as we get into 2011 are new material from Colt Ford, Josh Gracin and Corey Smith. Radio will see our guys in their markets, and I’ll be out visiting radio stations for the first time in a long time. I have missed my day-to-day contact with Country radio a whole bunch, and that’s one of the things I’m very excited about. Did I mention I was excited? CAC

For me, this opportunity is the best of the future, along with what I’ve learned in the past, my relationships and what I know about Country radio, and having them intersect. Define Average Joes for those who may only associate it as the label for Colt Ford. It’s an entertainment company, not just a label. They’re not just selling CDs. There’s an in-house management company. There’s a Hip Hop and Urban component out of Atlanta. Movies, too. The CEO, Shannon Houchins, has a long history in the rap business as a record producer. He’s got a bunch of other acts underground. It really is a full-service entertainment company, and it’s one of the coolest environments. I’ve only been in it a couple days, but I can already feel something real magical. I can’t tell you how excited I am, because this is a time of experimentation, change and reinvention. And this group of folks has figured out how to do that and be successful doing it. Not all of these artists are made for mainstream Country radio, but that’s okay. What they all are made for is hitting a stage, entertaining an audience and bringing a bigger crowd out the next time. It’s word-of-mouth. Add radio, and the sky’s the limit. Is there a parent company or investor base?

Pedal Pusher: Citadel’s KXKC/Lafayette, LA morning show Ray & Jeni helped collect 100 bicycles as part of their Toys For Tots Bike Drive. The goal was 99 bikes, or Ray would have had to ride for 99 miles. Fortunately for Ray and the grateful area children, after five hours of riding (Ray’s actual miles did vary), the station received bike donation No. 100.

Christian Kane The House Rules (BPG) Leverage actor Kane co-wrote eight of the 11 tracks for his country debut, which features the lead title single. Tom Shapiro and co-producer Jimmy Lee Sloas are among the songwriters. Bob Ezrin shares the producer credit.

Last month’s Country chill turned somewhat frostier in November. Of the 83 stations with generally a 1.0 or better 6+, decliners led gainers 50-27, with six stations unchanged; 10 experienced PPM share lows. In all, these 83 stations delivered 337.1 shares of listening, down from 340.6 in October, compared to 344.7 in September – a 2.2% decline over the past two months. In cume, decliners led gainers 51-32. Still, there were several positive highlights: WPOC/Baltimore reached No. 1 for the first time and KCYY/San Antonio returned to the top spot. And five stations set new 6+ share records: WPOC (for the second straight month); WOGI/Pittsburgh; WPCV/Lakeland (in Orlando); WKMK/Monmouth

Cume records were broken by WKMK, WPCV, KVET-FM/Austin, Classic Country WZBK-FM/Milwaukee and WGH-FM/Norfolk. The November “Book Of The Month Club” winner is Gaylord’s WSM-AM, which jumped 3.1-4.2.
