Our Advent Journey Let us imagine for a moment what it would be like living during the very first season of Advent over two thousand years ago. Indeed, it would be very different from the Advents of modern times. There were no shopping malls, parking problems, lines at the post office, internet and many other contemporary signs of living in a fast paced society during the month of December. It was a time of quiet expectation and patient waiting. There was one voice crying out, though. This voice was loud and clear. It was the voice of John the Baptist. His mission was foretold in the Book of Isaiah centuries earlier. “A herald’s voice in the desert, crying, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, clear Him a straight path. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be leveled. The windings shall be made straight and the rough ways smooth, and all mankind shall see the salvation of God.” (Isaiah 40:3-5) How exciting this must have been! People were waiting for the Messiah and now they were hearing that the time for His arrival was close at hand. This will not be something to be afraid of, but something to rejoice in. Good and wonderful things will happen with the arrival of God’s Son, yet people will need to be prepared and properly disposed before the arrival. There would be much to be done, but anticipating the arrival of Jesus would be worth it. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could live our Advent of 2020 the same way the people in John the Baptist’s day lived? There would probably be less stress in our lives, and certainly we would be more focused on what the real meaning of Christmas is all about. Perhaps during these busy days of Advent we could find some quiet moments to reflect on John the Baptist’s message. Let us prepare our hearts and minds to welcome Jesus at Christmas and every day of our lives. Let us anticipate with joy what it is like in the Kingdom of God, begun here on earth, and moving toward fulfillment someday when our Lord comes again. Wonderful things have happened, continue to happen and will happen to all those who believe in the Lord Jesus and welcome Him with open hearts. Father David

Administration Ministries [ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]

We must be good stewards of God’s gifts to us, receiving them gratefully and cultivating them with care lest we be the ones about whom John the Baptist speaks: “Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Help our elders. In good times and bad, senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have dedicated themselves to service and acts of mercy. Today, they pray for an aching world. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left their religious communities without enough retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Next weekend we will have baskets out if you wish to contribute. Thank you!

—Attending Parking Lot Mass Christmas Eve & Day—

We are blessed to be able to celebrate Christmas with you this year at St. James the Apostle Parish! We will be offering two Parking Lot Masses, one on Christmas Eve at 3:00 P.M. and one on Christmas Day at 9:00 A.M. These Masses allow us to accommodate many more parishioners than we are able to fit inside the church at this time. There is no pre-registration for these Masses. W e w ill open the parking lots 30 minutes before Mass begins. Each lot will close once it is full. Please see the map below to see the points of entry and exit. Cars may park in every other parking space. Unavailable spaces will be marked with an orange parking cone. Mass will be broadcast over the radio at 106.9 FM.

—What You Can Expect—

Volunteers will come to your car twice during Mass: at Offertory to collect any gift you may bring and at Communion. As you prepare to receive Communion, you may remain in your car with the windows rolled down or exit your car and stand by the aisle. Please keep your masks on: first the ushers spray your hands with hand sanitizer and then a Eucharistic Minister distributes Communion. Please note, Communion will be distributed only in the hand. Please wait until the minister has proceeded to the next car to take down your mask to consume the host. Please remain parked until after the Final Blessing for the safety of all. After Mass, we ask you to exit the parking lot carefully, as you usually do at the conclusion of every Mass.

St. James Youth Ministry Resources to Help You Create a Meaningful Advent

"The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the season. Our Advent calendar above can help you fully enter in to the season with daily activity and prayer suggestions to prepare you spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas Collection for DuPage Care Center

Around this time each year, St. James the Apostle parishioners are invited to support the DuPage Care Center’s Annual Adopt-A-Resident program. This program is an opportunity for the community members, like you, to show your support to the residents and ensure their holiday wishes are met with personalized gifts. Here is how you can support this program.

Donate special items for the residents to use year-round off the Holiday Wish list. Items from this list are used to fill additional resident needs. Search Amazon for “DPCC Wishlist” or visit our website, www.dupageco.org/dpcc to view our wish list.

Gifts may be addressed to: DuPage Care Center C/O Wishlist 2020 400 N. County Farm Rd. Wheaton IL, 60187

If you have any questions, please call or email Elizabeth Walker at 630-784-4260 or [email protected].

If you do not wish to adopt a resident but would still like to contribute in some other way, monetary donations are always welcomed. Checks may be made out to the DuPage Care Center Foundation. As a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, all contributions may be deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

Thank you for your help to make the holidays a little brighter by supporting the Adopt- A- Resident program.

Bringing Epiphany to the Children of St. John Paul II Parish

The Epiphany Toy Bag Collection for the children of St. John Paul II in Kankakee will look a little different this year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ladies of the St. James Council of Catholic Women will not be able to physically collect your donations of toys. However, the need is still great as St. John Paul II continues to be one of the most economically challenged parishes in the Joliet Diocese.

Because our St. James the Apostle parishioners have been so generous in the past, we are hoping to collect monetary donations only this year to enable St. John Paul II Parish to have a drive through Epiphany Celebration for the kids. They will purchase gift cards locally to support the businesses in their area.

To donate: Drop your envelope of cash or check (made payable to “St. James CCW”) marked “Epiphany Toy Bag Collection” into the Sunday Mass offering.

If you prefer, please mail your checks (made payable to “St. James CCW”) directly to Doris Barrera, 1800 Jasper Court, Wheaton, IL 60189.

Please mail your tax deductible contribution on or before December 18th.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate during this difficult time. If you have any questions, please call Doris Barrera at 630-260-9276 or email [email protected]

Other Ways to Share Your Blessings this Holiday Season

Needed - PC Monitors, Keyboards, Mice, Speakers

For two decades, parishioner Chuck Reiss has been refurbishing PCs for St. Elizabeth in Chicago and later for Catholic Charities in the Chicago area. He has just delivered his 300th personal computer to a Catholic Charities family to be used to access information and do remote learning. A corporation recently donated over twenty computers to this project in order to be refurbished, but they arrived without Monitors, Keyboards, Mice and PC Speakers.

If you have extra equipment laying around, please donate it so these computers may be placed in homes to help families with remote learning. Drop off is contact free in his enclosed front porch. If you have questions, contact Chuck Reiss 630-858-5381 or [email protected]

I n these unprecedented times, when so many of us are unable to gather for public worship, we may be experiencing a sense of disconnection

from our family of God at St. James.

Similarly, those of us who are able to return to public worship may feel a sense of loss and disconnection from our brothers and sisters in Christ whose faces we miss seeing gathered at the Table of the Lord each week.

Although we are physically apart at this time, the truth is we remain ONE in Christ. Therefore, in an effort to stay connected, we are happy to launch Project ONE at St. James as a safe and creative way to bridge this temporary obstacle the pandemic has ushered into our lives.

So far, Project ONE has distributed care packages to parishioners in October, November and December. Want to join in the fun for January? Be sure to sign up by the 15th of December.

Join Project ONE today! No matter your age or circumstances, any parishioner may join—it is open to all and there are three ways to participate:

1) Sign up to receive a monthly care package filled with love from your parish family. You can arrange for delivery outside your home OR pickup outside the Ministry Center.
