CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT GOOD SHEPHERD This Sun., December 7. Admission is free! Come & enjoy!

A Song and a Prayer and a Blessing. As the people go up to

receive Holy Communion, a chant or psalm or hymn should be

sung, by which the faithful praise God in one voice, a symbol

of their spiritual unity at this moment. Afterwards, they pray

quietly or song a meditative hymn or chant in thanksgiving for

what they have received. The Priest then rises and says or

chants, “Let us pray.” The Communion Rite is then concluded

with the third and final prayer of the Mass, in which we give

thanks for the gifts we have received, the Body and Blood of

the Lord Jesus himself. The people make the prayer their own,

as always, by singing or saying, “Amen.” To conclude the

Mass, the Priest blesses the people in the name of the Most

Holy Trinity, and the deacon or the Priest himself dismisses

them: “Go forth, the Mass is ended.” The people respond,

“Thanks be to God,” leaving the celebration of the Mass to

bring the gifts of love they have received into a world that hun-

gers and thirsts for them. There is then usually sung a reces-

sional hymn. Holy Mass has ended, and we have been fed

from the altar of the Lord. We go forth to bring the Good News

to a waiting world. Next week: We begin the Ten Command-

ments of reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

7 December ~ Saint Ambrose, Bishop & Doctor of the

Church. Ambrose was born of an ancient Roman Chr is-

tian family in 339 or 340 when his father (also named Am-

brose) was an imperial official charged with the administration

of Gaul, Britain and Spain. When his father died, the family

moved back to Rome, where Ambrose studied law and eventu-

ally became consul for the region of Liguria in northern Italy,

based in the city of Milan. Though he was universally admired

for his wisdom and discretion, he was not baptized. When the

aged Bishop Auxentius died, there was much tension in the

city and in the local church as to who might succeed him. Am-

brose, still a catechumen, was trying to calm the situation

when, according to Saint Paulinus of Nola, the shrill voice of a

child was heard repeating, “Let Ambrose be bishop! Let Am-

brose be bishop!” In spite of the fact that he was unbaptized,

the crowd elected him by acclamation. He was horrified, but

was under great pressure to accept. In a matter of days, he was

baptized, confirmed, received first Holy Communion, and was

ordained deacon, priest and bishop. He was at the time 35

years old. He frequently had to defend the rights and freedom

of the Church, most notably against the Emperor Theodosius

himself. A man of deepest charity and devotion, he reformed

the liturgy, composed hymns which are sung to this day, cared

lovingly for souls (he baptized Saint Augustine), and wrote

extensively on the books of the Old Testament. Never of ro-

bust health, he died in 397. He is counted as one of the four

great Doctors of the Latin Church, along with Augustine, Je-

rome and Gregory the Great. Saint Ambrose, pray for us!

NEW LIBRARY NOOK Do you have any spiritual reading books that you would like to share

with your fellow parishioners? The Holy Rosary Sodality is sponsoring

a library nook in the entrance foyer of the church. Just leave your used

books on the shelf area to the left of the main doors. Sodality members

will create a mini-library on that shelf. Parishioners may borrow or keep

any book they find interesting.

THANK YOU! Members of both parishes and of the school, of every age, made the

short trip to Southpointe to sing carols for the folks there. As part of

our Respect Life Ministry, we wanted to bring some Christmas joy (a

bit early) to those wonderful people who are so dear to us all. From the

looks on their faces, especially as they saw so many children before

them, and from their participation, we think we succeeded. Thanks to

Eileen Hadfield and Donna Lapointe who organized, to Paul L’Heureux

who supported the singing with his fancy guitar work, and to all the

grownups and kids who participated.
