PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

The Houston Geological Society Shrimp Peel was againa great success. The weatherwas cold but the rain stoppedbefore the appointed hour. Several people and organizationsdeserve the thanks and appreciations of the entire society, even those members that didn't attend.

Denny Bartell and his Entertainment Committee werethe backbone of the activity and each of us thank them. TheMilchem people who actually cooked the shrimp deserve ourspecial thanks. They had the equipment and "know-how" tomake the affair a success.

The third group we are grateful to are the organizationsthat have contributed to our entertainment fund. You will finda list of them in the bulletin. As you have the opportunity, thank their representatives. Their contributions help, notonly with the Shrimp Peel, but with the other entertainmentfunctions of the Society during the year.

HAL H. BYBEE, PresidentHouston Geological Society

PAST PRESIDENTS MEETING H. G. S. Past Presidents in Attendance, September 27, 1976.

The fourth annual luncheon meeting of Houston Geological Society Past Presidents convened on Monday, September 27, 1976 in the Petroleum Club. Twenty six of the 34 living past presidents attended (see list below).

After the luncheon Anthony Reso made the welcoming remarks and acknowledged regrets from those who could not attend. His statement that no past presidents had been lost during the past year produced a loud and lengthy ovation.

Brian Eby, 7th president (1930) spoke on the serious current and future Japanese energy problems in the light of his recent trip to Japan at the behest of the Houston Chamber of Commerce.

The next meeting of H. G. S. Past Presidents will be called in September, 1977.

CONTlNUlNG EDUCATION

Dr. George DeVries Klein will give the second Continu- ing Education Program entitled "Exploration for Turbidites and other Deep-Water Sandstones" on the afternoon of January 20, 1977, at the Exxon Auditorium. The three and a half hour course will cost $10 for students, $15 for participants that pre-register, and $20 for those who register at the door. Dr. Klein has prepared a 109-page syllabus entitled "Sandstone Depositional Models for Exploration for Fossil Fuels" which will be included with thecourse package.

Brief Course Description: Emphasis is placed on recognizing the different types of deep-water sandstone bodies occurring in various oceanic settings. This course is designed for exploration geologists and exploration geo- physicists. The lectures cover deep ocean sand transport mechanisms, the types of sediments produced by each mechanism, the criteria for distinguishing geometries, and differences in geophysical properties that aid in their recognition. Differences in occurrence and types of turbidite and contourite sedimentary bodies are recognized in several depositional settings such as mid-ocean ridges, abyssal plains, oceanic trenches, marginal basins and continental slopes. Data from the Deep Sea Drilling Project will be incorporated for recognition of various tectonic controls on turbidite and other deep-water sand body style and develop- ment.

To register for Dr. Klein's lecture send a check to: Continuing Education, Houston Geological Society. 234 Esperson Building, Houston, Texas 77002.
