President’s Message By Faye Kunz

I am writing this message two

days before Thanksgiving.

What an appropriate time to

give thanks to all of you who

participated in the Guild’s silent

auction either by donating auc-

tion items or by bidding. Over

$600 was raised through this

effort. A local employer will

match our donation up to $600

so our contribution to the Amer-

ican Red Cross will be over

$1200!

Several people have also con-

tributed quilts that will be taken

to Texas by Sue Halley, the

President of the Cedar Rapids

guild. Sue is leaving in Janu-

ary so you still have time to

contribute to this effort. No

flannel quilts, of course, but any

size lightweight quilt would be

appreciated by its recipient.

Thanks also to everyone who

helped set up the Botanical

Center “Pride and Joy” display

and those who helped with the

Festival of Trees display. Both

are excellent opportunities to

show off what our Guild mem-

bers do and entice others to join

in the fun. We have additional

opportunities scheduled in 2018

so if you didn’t have a chance

to help out this past month,

there will be time in January

and March at the Bettendorf

Library and in March and No-

vember at the Figge Museum

(in addition to the Quilt Show,

of course!)

I hope your Turkey Day was

wonderful! See you soon!

Mary Korrect has announced that the 2018 Guild Challenge will be sunflowers. Quilts should be no larger than 144" in circum-ference. More details will be provided later.

Doohickey Drawing

An Americanism dating from 1910-1915, a doohickey is a gadg-et; a dingus; a thingumbob; a nifty quilting tool that a quilter may want, has never heard of, or is too expensive to purchase. Each month a new Doohickey is offered to our membership. It may be a new “cool” tool or it may be something tried and true; expensive or not so much. Tickets are $1.00 and monthly prizes are determined by the number of tickets sold the previous month. The winning ticket will be drawn at the end of the even-ing meeting.

The November Doohickey winner was Joyce Kirkpatrick!

There will not be a drawing in December because of the pot-luck. Trust me — You will want the January Doohickey!!

Oops! Afternoon Name Tag Winner list was misplaced!

Congratulations to Bev Hoy for the excellent arti-cle in the Quad City Times' Senior Voice. When contacted by the Editor of Senior Voice, Bev's name immediately jumped to mind because what a great opportunity to talk about our 2018 raffle quilt! The Board agreed because, frankly, any-one but one of us!!

Bev agreed to "take one for the team" for which we are very grateful. The article wasn't written quite as we had hoped (no mention of the raffle quilt) but it did serve to introduce people to the joys of quilting. We have been promised another article in Senior Voice in 2018 close to our Quilt Show. That article will highlight members of the Quilt Show Committee who are over the age of 65 and will hopefully advertise the show.

LAST CHANCE! Our December meeting will be your last

chance to donate quilts for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Any lightweight quilt is suitable for this donation.

Well as in last month this is to just re-affirm a HUGE thanks you for all you

helped with. The cookies were amazing as always, thank you for coming thru

with those. To all who helped hand out the quilts, that went smooth. To Clayton Peterson and Denny Zahrt for co-emceeing the event, they both did a great job! To Clayton for all his hard work in sending the invites. To the Chordbusters for their perfor-mance, stunning as usual, which by the way they never charge us for it! To all the quilters for making the quilts and pillow cases. For all the help in setting up, taking down and handing out the cookies( and yes to Sandy for organizing the cookie trays). If I missed a thank you this is a blanket for all. An out-standing day, with a few glitches, but an special thank you for all the vets and active soldiers for whom we do this for. Thank you Thank you for all you do for this foundation. I am so proud of all of you.

I have received several phone calls from vets and their families to say they were so honored and the tears were still flowing.

Two thank you’s I received today:

Dear Mrs. Austin, When I hugged you, you said "Thank you for your service and welcome home. Welcome home is something I've never heard. A brick of bitterness left me then.”

Thanks again, Richard S.

Dear Terry, I received a quilt on Sunday for my ser-vice to OUR country. I feel very humbled to have received a quilt, as I have always been proud to have served in the US Navy. The ceremony was very touching, especially as you gave testimonials of fellow service personnel who have received a quilt. I would like to thank you and all those who are part of the Quad City Quilts of Valor.

Many Many Thanks, Jim W.

This is why we do what we do!

So from a grateful heart,

Terry Austin QC QOV

DOLL QUILTS

Thanks for all the effort that makes this project a success, and brightens many children's holidays.

We skip the December work day and will meet in January, weather permit-ting. Call me if in doubt. Hope to sort and plan some new designs..

Festival of trees....successfully set up, looked great, and was a big hit as al-ways. Being located next to the stage rather pre-cluded much sit and sew time....mix-up on layout placement. But hopefully those who participated coped with the variables.

Grab bag of goodies at the December meet-ing for those who partici-pated in these activities, or donated fabric or bat-ting for the doll quilts and gifts under the festival tree.

Be sure to turn in your volunteer hours. I only turn in for the doll quilt work day.

Cheers , thanks and have a good holiday sea-son! Keep on scrapping!

Maggie

Davenport Library on Fairmont Street will be Friday and Saturday, December 15 and 16 (In the SCRA/large room) and January 19 and 20 (in the Brooke

spend some time visiting with us. On December 16 there will be cake to celebrate Judy's and Sharon’s

birthdays!

December 5, 1 & 7 pm: Holiday Potluck and Party. Table service is available or you can bring your own. Bring a dish to share – main dishes, sides, salads, or desserts for the party in the afternoon, but focus on appetizers or desserts for the even-ing festivities. Since there are many requests for your delicious dishes, bring a copy of your recipe or the name of the take-out location where you selected your dish (because we all like secret sources, too). Entertainment includes festive holiday music and a different interactive game this year that does not involve fabric of any kind. If you need a holiday gift for a quilter, MVQG gift certificates will be available at the December meeting. January 2, 1 & 7 pm: UFO Challenge. We know you have unfinished projects lurking everywhere. Challenge yourself to compete some of these projects this year by entering the UFO challenge. You can still sign up at the December meeting! February 6, 1 & 7 pm: Habitat for Humanity Charity Sewing Day - Dedicated to making blocks for Habitat Quilts, out February meeting will be coordinated by Carol Baldry. The MVQG donates a quilt to each Habitat House when it is dedicat-ed. I have written instructions for two quilt blocks. These can be alternated (seams don't have to match) or used as the same block in a quilt. You will need to bring four 2 1/2" strips—two light and two dark. These four strips will be enough for you to make one block of each pattern. The leftovers can all be put together to make scrappy blocks with the same patterns. If weather interferes with the February meeting, Carol would appreciate any blocks that you can make on your own March 6, 1 & 7 pm: Our very own national quilt judge, Carol Brooks, will speak about Quilt Design. April 3: The April meeting features Charlotte Angottii, a nationally and internationally recognized quilt instructor who is known for her sense of humor, her way with color and design, and her laser-cut quilt kits that go together perfectly! Plan Ahead: Charlotte’s most popular class, “Let Me Surprise You,” will be featured on Wednesday, April 4th from 9 to 3

at the Davenport Masonic Center. Charlotte will surprise us with a pre-cut quilt kit and will lead participants through the process of constructing the quilt especially designed for this workshop. Space is limited to 20 participants. To hold your spot, your check for $135 (kit fee $100, class fee $35) is due on the day you sign up (no exceptions). Sign-up will first be available at the January meeting, unless the January meeting is cancelled because of weather. Information about Char-lotte’s second class, which will be held on Thursday, April 5th, will be available at the January meeting.

2018 Great River Quilt Show

Ladies & Gentlemen, I hope you are doing well in completing your UFO's and starting new projects to share at the 2018 Great River Quilt Show. Please help us have another great show and consider making something besides a quilt for the show such as a garment or bag. We have such amazing talent in the Guild. I know that you all will come through with some beautiful things for us to display. I am sorry though to inform everyone that we will not be having the Boutique for this next show. I am also in need of two addi-tional volunteers for the committee. I need someone to be in charge of the ribbons and someone to do the pins for the show. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions. If you have any questions please e-mail me @ [email protected] or call me at home 563-381-3605 or on my cell at 563-349-1853.

Thank you
