Residents Association AGM & Public Meeting in the Village Hall

Monday 17th December 2012 at 6.30pm

FUN DAY FundingFund raising is underway with our Christmas Raffles one is being run at the Goldcrest pub and the other is ongoing at the Victoria Dock Tavern. We have had several prizes including 3 food hampers do-nated by Riverside Property and several other peo-ple. We are looking for support by providing raffle prizes, these can be collected from you or left at the Goldcrest. We will also collect cash donations if you would rather do that.The Fun Day last year cost £12060 in total, we had a grant from the council of £2500 and a £1500 do-nation from ABP. Several other donations from pri-vate companies and individuals for which we are very grateful. Our income was £9190 overallWristbands that parents bought raised £3184, this left the Village Hall with a shortfall of 2869.The Christmas raffle is the start of this years fund raising and is doing well thanks to both pubs. Please buy a raffle ticket if you go in either of the pubs or if you call 0776 800 8382 I will bring tickets to you.

Candlelight Christmas CarolsThis will take place in the Village Hall on Christmas Eve at 7pm. All donations at this event will be going to The Hull Food bank.The Salvation Army Band will be playing carols outside the Winding House on 11 December from 7pm to 8pm. Unfortu-nately this will have taken place before you get this newsletter.

Gift SwapThe Church are arranging a Gift Swap on Sunday 27 January 2013 stating at 12.30pm in the Village Hall. Free soup and rolls will be provided, plus tea and cof-fee. A nice easy straight swop.

Christmas Greetings The Committee of the Village hall would like to wish you all, Special Greetings for the Sea-son of goodwill.Please come and join our small commit-tee, we meet on the first Monday in the month at 7pm in the Hall.

Could you save £100’s on your energy billResidents could soon be saving hundreds of pounds on their energy bills with Hull City Council set to join the UK’s largest collective energy switching scheme. The scheme will enable every household in Hull, and from other communities in the UK, to join together as a single unit to negotiate cheaper energy bills. It’s expected that residents could see energy savings of between £60 to £200 a year.

The initiative is set to be the largest and most inclusive of its kind in the UK. In total, twelve local authorities will join together as part of the collective energy switching scheme, which will open up potential savings to two million households. In response to rising energy prices and increasing numbers of households in fuel poverty, the scheme will also be the first in the UK to allow residents who use pre-payment meters to register. In addition, the scheme will be the first in the UK to invite small and medium enterprises (SME’S) to take part, which could result in savings for over 100,000 SME’S.

To participate in the scheme, residents are invited to find out more and to register via www.hullcc.gov.uk/energyswitch or by visiting one of the Customer Service Centre’s or Hull Warm Zone. Registering is free of charge and you will need to give details of your current energy usage for gas and electricity. There is no obligation to switch supplier when registering.

Purple Flag Awards

Representatives of the organisa-tions which led Hull’s campaign to achieve Purple Flag status re-ceived their award in a ceremony at Sheffield City Hall on Tuesday 4th December.

Hull was among five towns and cities which were recognised for the safety, quality and diversity of their night-time economy. In order to achieve the standard, centre’s must demonstrate a range of activities, initiatives and services that offer residents and visitors an entertaining and di-verse night out.

Hull’s campaign was led by a partnership which includes Hull-BID, Hull City Council, Humber-side Police, Hull Citysafe and the Primary Care Trust. Purple Flag inspectors from the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) assessed the city over the weekend of the Freedom Festival in September.

The ATCM announced its findings last month and confirmed Hull as only the third Purple Flag recipi-ent in Yorkshire, emulating the success of Halifax and Sheffield. The full Purple Flag assessment report shows that Hull exceeded the standard required in 17 out of 30 criteria studied by the inspec-tion team and the accreditation panel which followed. The city met the requirements in the re-maining 13 categories.

Mount Pleasant accident blackspot: Hull City Council aims to improve safety on roundabout

NEW safety measures are set to be installed after three lorries overturned at an accident blackspot in east Hull.

Hull City Council has confirmed new road markings will be laid out at the Mount Pleasant roundabout, near Victoria Dock, to help guide drivers around the junction.

The decision to install new markings follows a meeting between council highways officials and ward councillors Linda Chambers and Adam Williams. She said: "This roundabout has become a real danger spot. Adam and I discussed our concerns with the officers and potential steps to make the roundabout safer."

In September, a lorry shed its load of earth as it failed to negotiate the roundabout, which is one of two under the elevated section of the A1033. No other vehicle was involved and the driver is believed to have escaped without serious injury.

It was third lorry spill at the scene in just over a year and prompted renewed calls to improve safety at the site. In April, a load of ani-mal feed was spilled across a footpath and cycleway after a lorry overturned close to the same spot. Work on restoring the verge and a cycleway had only just been completed when September's accident happened.

Cllr Williams said: "One of the problems with the roundabout has been the lack of clarity about which lane vehicles should be in if they are turning right."

"This has led to vehicles switching lanes on the roundabout itself. "The roundabout is small and the turnings are tight, which has con-tributed to the problem."

The new road markings are expected to be laid on the roundabout over the next few weeks. As well as guiding vehicles into the cor-rect lanes, council officials hope they will also encourage drivers to slow down.

Cllr Williams said: "I'm not an expert but I am told the weight of a load like this does shift around when a vehicle is going around a roundabout. "Combine that with the speed of vehicles approaching the roundabouts and it could make them more difficult to negoti-ate."

There have been a series of similar crashes at roundabout junctions along Hedon Road in recent years. In 2010, cyclist Susan Rus-sell was killed when a container fell off a tractor at the nearby Garrison Road roundabout.
