Dear Readers, It is with gratitude that I end another year of service for the Lifeline. It is such a pleasure to work with such a talented group as the Lifeline committee and I com-mend them for their hard work, dedication and commit-ment to the Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous®. Much of the content of the Lifeline comes from com-mittee members and I am ever so grateful. I’d also like to recognize Regina K. for her unfailing hard work run-ning Central Office. Regina recently celebrated 30 years of sobriety and Orange County is lucky to have her in service.

As the new year approaches, I ask you, the reader, for your participation in the success of the 2009 volume of the Lifeline. We are always looking for original articles and you do not need to be a “writer” to offer a valuable contribution. Beginning with the January issue we will run a new feature titled, “Turning Point”. We’ve all had a moment when our lives changed. Share yours with us. Your ideas, suggestions, criticism, jokes and articles are also welcome. The Lifeline is your newsletter and I encourage you to be a part of it.

Lastly, I ask that you consider all that Alcoholics Anonymous has done for you. Where would you be if it weren’t for AA? When I consider where I came from and what my life used to be like, I realize the gifts of sobriety are priceless. As the Lifeline editor I have the privilege of reading Intergroup newsletters from around the country and the problem is clear across the states. AA needs more support. While there are no dues or fees for membership, AA also has to be self supporting through it’s own contributions. If you’ve been around long enough to see AA work in your life, consider put-ting $3 or more in the basket for the 7th tradition. That is still only $21 a week if you attend a meeting every day. This is less than the cost of one night of drinking. The cost of literature alone continues to go up but our contributions continue to stay the same. Please help make a difference.

“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result

of these steps, we tried to carry this message to

alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all

our affairs.”

TWELFTH STEP PRAYER:

Dear God, My spiritual awakening continues to unfold.

The help I have received I shall pass on & give to others,

both in & out of the Fellowship. For this opportunity I am

grateful. I pray most humbly to continue walking day by

day on the road of spiritual progress. I pray for the inner

strength & wisdom to practice the principles of this way

of life in all I do & say. I need You, my friends & the pro-

gram every hour of every day. This is a better way to live.

WEB SITE STATISTICS

The first on-line issue of the Lifeline was posted to our web site in July of 2006. However, when our site hosting company changed servers in June, 2007, some usage statistics before then were lost. Since January, 2007, the Lifeline home page has been viewed 7,966 times. Individual issue files have been viewed 13,886 times.

In September, there were 16,536 "visits" to www.ocaa.org. From December, 2007, through October, 2008, visits aver-aged 15,969 per month.

Note: Most of this article is extracted directly from comments in a good Grapevine article by W.S.R. in 1971, but in addition, I queried folks at a recent meeting about what “Spiritual Awakening” meant to them. One meaningful comment was simply that “If we have found a power greater than ourselves, turned our will over to Him, asked for His protection and tried to improve our conscious contact with Him, then how could we NOT have had a Spiritual awakening?”

And for the fact that it happens “sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly” is explained well in Appendix II of the Big Book. Jim S.

The Twelfth Step is the capstone of the AA program. It announces itself as being such with its opening phrases, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps.” . . Whatever is to follow those words is the result of all that went before. Few of us experience the “wind. . .of spirit” described by Bill W. In-deed, very few of us experience a sudden, startling spiritual experience of any kind. Usually, the change is gradual. Yet it is no less a spiritual awakening. Whether we awaken with a bound or after much stretching, we awaken. When there is a spiritual awakening, self-centeredness, fear, and frustration are supplanted by helpful friendliness, happiness (perhaps even a touch of serenity), and fulfillment. I joined AA a few weeks before Vinny F. did, and it was remarkable to me to watch the changes that transformed him within a few months. Why couldn't it be happening to me? I said as much to an old-timer. “Oh, you've changed just as much as Vinny,” he told me with a broad smile. I couldn't believe it! But indeed I had changed, and if my search for spiritual guidance was unsuccessful in its church-oriented aspect, the search itself contin-ued. It went on and on, at regular meetings and at one-to-one meetings with individual members.

The writer goes on to say that the sum effect of all that was said and done at a meeting was an “X” factor greater than the sum of its parts, calling it “spiritual.” The late Len B. called this “Magic.”

That there was nothing sudden about this, no bolt of lightning, no rumble of thunder, is evident from the fact that for several years I could not bring myself to go and speak in a prison. One day, as though a veil were torn away, I realized that I could speak in jails and prisons. I would not be going beyond the locked gates in order to identify with the men as prisoners. Perhaps some of them would consider me an amateur for not having lost my liberty, but that would be their hang-up, not mine. Since then, I've had good AA conversations with a number of prisoners--as fellow alcoholics. That leads right into the next phase of the capstone Step: “. . .we tried to carry this message to alcoholics.” What message? Hope. Exam-ple. The way out. The way back. A handful of simple principles to un-ravel most of our snarled-up problems. A touch of humor--not taking ourselves so damned seriously. Meetings. Availability. Talk, talk, talk. The willingness to listen with understanding as the still-suffering alco-holic thrashes his way out of his mental mire. Tolerance. Guilelessness. The honesty to face situations and people, not go around them by the old, familiar route of sneakiness and subverted honesty. “Carrying the message” is all these things. You and I know members who, having “caught” the program them-selves, find the repeating drunk someone to avoid. I have heard from

more than one repeater that some member has told him he cannot re-turn to AA. Imagine one lush excommunicating another! That is carrying the message? You and I have called on drunks whose remorse and frustration were founded principally on their not having done what the self-righteous member had told them to do. They felt beyond the pale. The last two examples are spoiled fruit of the ego tree. The poor drunk who can't immediately catch fire from Ardent Member's magic words is discarded as unworthy. “He isn't trying,” says Ardent Member. On what profound knowledge does he base his opinion? So far as I know, there was only One with the power to say, “Go and sin no more.” We have seen old-timers founder. And we have seen old experi-menters finally succeed--because someone held the door open. When we close the door, we are really saying, “You have tested my tolerance and won. Your ability to go on drinking and living threatens my sobriety.” So, if we can't give someone the hope implicit in the capstone Step, let's not blame the sick alcoholic. Let's admit that the case is beyond our personal ability to translate the message of AA into terms he can under-stand. Trying to find new translations is a great way to strengthen our own sobriety. Closing the door to the constant repeater, on the other hand, is an admission of our own lack of tolerance or self-belief. The last clause of the last Step advises us “to practice these princi-ples in all our affairs.” What “these principles” are is contained in the eleven Step articles that preceded this one and in numerous other AA sources. To me, the last four words have shed one of the most penetrating lights of all AA's illuminating suggestions and ideas for living. I interpret “in all our affairs” to mean that we can have a sane, sober, rewarding life outside our AA meetings. We do not have to be introverted AAs, safe from the lurking horrors only when among fellow alcoholics. AA is our serum, our antitoxin. The last part of our last suggested Step tells us that AA will guard us through meetingless days. It even tells us that sobriety, like all good news, is communicable. W.S.R. CHAPTER 10CHAPTER 10

To EmployersTo Employers

From the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

Defining Anonymity Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever

reminding us to place principles before personalities.

Tradition 12, P564, Alcoholics Anonymous. In our meetings, some alcoholics identify themselves with both their given name and their surname: “My name is Joe Jones and I’m an alcoholic.” Is this a violation of the anonymity tradition? Yes, says one old-timer. No, says another. And the debate is on. Because A.A. has no rules or regulations, no by-laws or execu-tive orders (and also because of the Fourth Tradition which says each group should be autonomous unless their actions might im-pact other groups or the program in general), we get to set our own ways. In the aforementioned debate, it isn’t as though we lack direc-tion on what the anonymity Tradition means. We do have some rather weighty and specific instruction on what it means to be anonymous. Dr. Bob, one of the two co-founders of Alcoholics Anony-mous, was not reluctant in setting forth his views on the matter, many of which are to be found on pages 264-265 of the book “Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers.” “Since our Tra-dition on ano-nymity designates the exact level where the line should be held, it must be obvious to everyone who can read and understand the English language that to maintain anonymity at any other level is definitely a violation of this Tradition. “The A.A. who hides his identity from his fellow A.A. by us-ing only a given name violates the Tradition just as much as the A.A. who permits his name to appear in the press in connection with matters pertaining to A.A. “The former is maintaining his anonymity above the level of press, radio, and films, and the latter is maintaining his anonym-ity below the level of press, radio, and films, whereas the Tradi-tion states that we should maintain our anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.” There are a number of other references in the book. One such reference is to be found on pages 175 and 176. “At this time (about 1939) Dr. Bob wrote and may have signed an article on A.A. and the Big Book that appeared in the August 1939 issue of a magazine called Faith. He alerted Ruth Hock (in the New York office) to its publication, and later reported he had received inquiries from 12 other doctors as a result.” Two paragraphs later it was noted that “the possibility that Dr. Bob signed this article means that he may have been among the first to break his anonymity at the public level – before there were any A.A. Traditions.” Finally, there is the matter of posthumous anonymity. In a 1971 General Service advisory action, reaffirmed in 1988, the GSC said “A.A. members generally think it unwise to break the anonymity of a member even after his death, but in each situation the final decision must rest with the family.” George L., Westminster

In the early days of A.A., there were several “promoters” of the movement. These men, (and they were all men) had visions of great things for Alcoholics Anony-mous. Of course, we all know about Bill W’s efforts at pro-moting the fledgling society, but there was a second mem-ber who was just as instrumental as Bill in getting and keeping the struggling band moving forward. His name was Hank P. and he wrote the majority of this chapter. His story was in the 1st edition, 1st printing and was entitled, “The Unbeliever”. Today, this story can be found in the A.A. book, “Experience, Strength and Hope”, truly one of the more remarkable stores ever found in the Big Book. Can you say detox?

A.A. was very interested in attracting last-gaspers who had been competent businessmen, as they seemed to be the best bet for future financial support for the society, (remember, spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection). And Hank fit the bill perfectly. It was Hank’s idea to sell automobile polish out of the New York office to generate financial support; it was Hank’s idea to sell stock in a publishing company that didn’t exist. Hank found a publisher for the Big Book who would accept stock in the non-existent publishing company in exchange for printing the book. A promoter, indeed!

When I read this chapter, two main ideas are in the forefront – (a) the author wants business owners and lead-ers to consider directing management and important sales leaders to Alcoholics Anonymous, and (2) the world has really changed since this chapter was written. The business and employment conditions in place when this chapter was written ceased to exist long ago. Today we have Employee Assistance Programs to help the alco-holic employee. We have medical and psychiatric insur-ance to allow the employee to seek help. There are laws protecting the alcoholic employee who seeks help.

Does this mean that this chapter should be re-moved from the Big Book? Surprising, the answer is probably no. While it could use a re-write, (yes, you heard it right, a chapter in the Big Book might be made more ef-fective with a re-write looking toward bringing the chapter into more contemporary times) the idea of talking to em-ployers is still as valuable and timely today as it was in 1939. I will be waiting to see who brings the idea up about re-writing this chapter. I’ll be standing right behind you, (well maybe not right behind you).

After graduating from high school, alco-hol interfered with a college education.

Since that time, I tried to quit drinking and go back to school but always relapsed. People who saw a

problem received a standard reply, "It's none of your business." I reasoned that going back to school was the only requirement, because that was the visible injury. People said that is not so. They eventually stopped trying because they got used to it. I thought, wrongly, that the warnings stopped due to improve-ments. AA describes the high levels of self-delusion in alcoholics.

While still sick with the disease of alcoholism, I went back to school four years ago. Both alcoholism and intense schoolwork ran simultaneously, like two rails of train tracks. The pits on one side of the track made for a very bumpy ride, but did not stop the train. At the time, knowing nothing about AA, I thought that strength of will could solve anything.

Even though very sick, life continually improved while at school because the employer recognized increasing knowledge and ability in business, resulting in raises. As the train continued straight and true, I saw a successful future nearing. Nobody warned that the pits were cumulative, building into something very nasty. As formal education strengthened some mental abili-ties, alcoholism silently increased in strength as well.

Eight months ago, the train pulled into the final stop on the route; massive education had finally stopped the drinking. The school program entered the last semester. A graduate di-ploma in business would mean a new job in a new city. I thought that even if liquor followed me, like the tail on a dog, the drinking would have to accept a major change because the environment would substantially improve.

AA teaches that the full force of the disease lurks just at the end of a goal. It says that an alcoholic, one way or another, is powerless in fighting it alone. After a journey of four years with target in site, unseen sickness struck with everything it had – gi-ant, overwhelming power. A month after the last drink, three weeks into the very last class of school, out of nowhere, every-thing went crazy. The fury of every pit in the track had built up, only to release all of a sudden. I watched myself incredibly drop out of school, felt forced to gamble, and uncontrollably wasted all the money until finances went to zero. From unstoppable power, even without any further drinking, I lost my bank accounts, pos-sessions, and relationships. After living in motels for a few months, the money finally ran out altogether. I ended up home-less and almost on the street.

Yet, sometimes success, and not just horror, lurks around the corner. Helpful people at a homeless shelter sent me to a recovery house that practices the AA way. Recovery has been steady since then. As a real benefit, I am no longer addicted to anything, including tobacco, caffeine, food, sex, credit cards, or other drugs. Maybe nothing short of a direct hit of knowledge, such as from AA, can handle the alcoholism giant. Maybe similar therapies out there come close to AA, such as areas in psychology or sociology or religion, but the sick and relentless brain will figure out an angle among the differences and strike anyway. AA exposes the tricks, surprises, and subtlety of its build-up of invisible strength. For me, understanding the little attacks of alcohol addiction seems to trigger the natural healing process of body, mind, and spirit.

My Favorite Meeting

I am a grateful recovering alcoholic. I’m also very fortu-nate to live in an area where there are so many good meetings that I can attend at any given time of the day.

I attend five meetings on a regular basis and I love each one but if I had to pick one as my favorite I would pick the 8 P.M. Monday night men’s stag at the Canyon Club in Laguna Beach. I’ve never met a greater bunch of guys anywhere. From the first time I attended this meeting I’ve been hooked. I’ve been going now for a little over six years. I love this meeting because everyone is very serious about the program of recovery but they don’t take themselves too seriously. They know how to have fun and there is a lot of laughter. We are definitely not a glum lot! Plus everyone is really good about going out of their way to welcome the newcomer and make him feel at home. We average between 35 to 45 guys a week and about 30 of us are regu-lars. I’ve made true life-long friends at this meeting. I know I can count on any one of them at anytime. But more importantly AA has helped me to become someone that anyone of them can count on at anytime if needed. For this, I am forever grateful.

Every Monday evening when I walk through the door to the big room at the Canyon Club I know I’m home.

If you are serious about your recovery and you like to have fun, come join us! Monday nights 8 to 9 P.M. at the Laguna Beach Canyon Club. See you there!

ORANGE COUNTY INTERGROUP SERVICE BOARD

A New Program for Inmates Coming SOON.

I have been involved in AA since getting sober in 1998. I have a sponsor that told me to “get in the car”. He proceeded to in-troduce me to service work in the rooms of AA. At six months, I was asked by my sponsor to show up at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Anaheim for the So Cal H&I Conference. I showed up to that event, and was totally lost. I knew no one; I knew noth-ing, and wasn’t sure what was happening. At the end of that weekend, all I knew was I had a commitment that lasted 7 years. I now know a host of people that attended that Confer-ence and have had the honor of being the Chair of that Confer-ence. At 9 months of sobriety, I was introduced to the Orange County Hospitals & Institutions Committee when I walked into the GG Alano Club and a room of about 350 people that smiled, laughed and demonstrated a true spirit of carrying the message to those that are confined. That was what I had been looking for. I have been a member of that committee and the Southern California Hospitals & Institutions Inter-group Com-mittee every since these two events happened.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of being involved with the Orange County jail system, and some of the state prisons. Through this involvement, I have been asked to participate on a new committee called C.A.R. The purpose of this committee is to provide a mentorship program to inmates that are within three to four months of release. This program would allow volunteers to go into the facility where the inmate is being held in order to start preparing them for a productive life in society, i.e. through 12 step programs. Our hope is to provide resources through the Probation Department for inmates that ask for our help. We are planning on having our first training session in March of 2009. We hope to match those inmates with recovering members of AA, in order that these people have a chance to “live life on life’s terms”.

To participate in the program you will need to attend a training session and be able to qualify for a clearance to the facility which makes the request. This program will be open to both men and women. I will try to keep everyone updated through this newsletter and at the monthly Intergroup meeting.

Thanks you for the life and privilege to serve AA.

CALL FORWARDING

CALL FORWARDING: The call forwarding program instituted by Orange County Central Office insures that our help line phones are answered by volunteers 24/7. During hours when the Central Office is closed, calls to the Central Office are forwarded to a call for-warding volunteer’s home or cell phone, where the volunteer answers the calls just as if he or she were sitting in the Cen-tral Office. This service allows the Central Office to realize a significant cost saving because we do not need to contract with a phone answering service. Even more vital, when a call is placed to Alcoholics Anonymous in Orange County, the caller will be talking to an Alcoholics Anonymous mem-ber not a phone service! This truly is “front-line” 12th Step work and we would appreciate any time you can give.

SHIFTS: Monday thru Friday shifts are 6am to 9am, 6pm to 9pm and 9pm to 6am. Saturday shifts start with the 6am to 9am. The Central Office opens and covers from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. The phones are than for-warded to volunteers to cover the phones from 1pm to 4pm, 4pm to 7pm, 7pm to 10pm and 10pm to 6am. On Sundays and Holidays shifts begin at 6am with the 6am to 10am, and continue with 10am to 2pm, 2pm to 6pm, 6pm to 10pm and 10pm to 6am.

VOLUNTEERING: In order to volunteer for this service it is suggested that you have two years of sobriety. You must than arrange with the Central Office Manager in Santa Ana or the Satellite Office Manager in Mission Viejo for a brief orientation session which will be held at one of the offices. Shifts are available please call the Central Office at (714) 556-4555 or the Satel-lite Office at (949) 582-2697.

The Lifeline is published monthly and is sup-ported solely through contributions from the A.A. groups and members of Orange County. The Lifeline is published to meet the following needs of the Orange County A.A. membership: to inform the A.A. membership regarding A.A. service, A.A. events and A.A. announcements; also to share experience in recovery, unity and service; to keep the A.A. membership informed regarding the actions, finances and meetings of the Orange County Intergroup Association and other Central Office committees.
