SuperParent Holiday Shopping Day

In just two days, the San Diego ASYMCA served 1280 mili-tary families through the SuperParent Holiday Shopping Day held on December 15th and 16th - this is 480 more families than last year! The ASYMCA is extremely thankful for the extraordinary volunteers and donors who made this happen. Thanks to a last minute, generous donation from The Spiva Foundation, hundreds of military families were called off of the waitlist and invited to attend the 2nd day of the pro-gram. “SuperParents” attending were invited to shop for new toys, receive a free massage, meet Padres players, and choose free spa products as well as a live mini tree. Christmas at the Hard Rock Cafe

Naval Medical Center

Holiday Programs

Over 20 mili-tary families celebrated Christmas morning with the San Diego Armed Services YMCA and Rod Luck at the Hard Rock Café. Each child visited with Santa and received a special toy and gift card. 13 military volunteers assisted that morning by preparing, serving, and cleaning up the Christmas meals.

One of many holiday events for the patients of Naval Medical Center and their families was the USO Holiday Party for kids with Sub Specialty needs. This year's event hosted more than 38 families. The party included a delicious break-fast, crafts for the kids, face painting, cookie decorating, and of course a visit from Santa with a gift from their wish list. This is a great way to ring in the holiday season, giving families an op-portunity to reunite and celebrate together.

Naval Medical Center hosted more than twenty events, activities, and visits in December. Countless organizations and individuals from the community wanted to visit NMC and wish the patients a happy holiday season. The picture below shows our annual visit from the Santa Ana Police Department. Over 20 police officers visited Med Hold, and brought lunch and holiday gift bags for the outpatients.

Cooking Class

Home for the Holidays

It’s hard to be-lieve the ASYMCA Cooking Class is already in its 7th year! This De-cember’s class included a cookie exchange, Holi-day Brunch, and gifts under the tree.

Thanks to the non profit Home for the Holidays, two military families were reunited with their loved ones for the holidays this year.

From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:

So, 2010 comes to an end and what a year it was! New programs were in-troduced to meet military family needs. New partnerships were formed with other agencies. New friends were made. More families were intro-duced to the ASYMCA. New goals were attained and new donors stepped to the plate to support our programs. The year 2010 would not have been a banner year without a stellar team working hard to make it happen. As a final thought I must thank my outstanding Board of Management, my Civil-ian Advisory Committee and the Military Advisory Committee, and the hundreds of volunteers, both military and civilians, who stepped to the plate to make it happen. Volunteers are invaluable to our operation. While there is not room to name every individual who supports our organi-zation, I must identify my Super Stars, who support me everyday in assist-ing military families with imagination and tireless energy: Administration: Phyllis Barber, Loree Sowden, Cindy Helwick Development and Public Relations: Brittany Catton, Katie DesBois Naval Medical Center: Cherri Barnswell, Erin Lester, Alysha Dugo, Natasha Leon-Guerrero, Lisa Moore Family Outreach: Amanda Cross, Diane Armstrong, Kirstie Pfeifer, Amy O’Donnell, Coleen Cobbs, Emily Griffin, Carina Espinoza, Mimi Chang Youth and Community Outreach: Lyndsay Calhoun, Andrea Fields, Cathy Tann, Kelly Christianson Active Duty Programs Corey Arkush, John Arbenz, Gaurav Patel
