Dear Members: I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Things were certainly busy at the Club where more than 400 members and guests either enjoyed the beautiful dinner buffet here at the Club, or partook in our “Turkey Dinner To-Go” package on “Turkey Day”! With the holiday season upon us, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the wonderful support you’ve given the Club over this past year. I’d also like to recognize our wonderful staff for their dedication and commitment throughout the year in providing a warm and friendly Club-experience for the members and their guests. I appreciate their hard work and willingness to please! MEMBER APPRECIATION HOLIDAY RECEPTION On Saturday, December 22nd the Club will host our 5th “Member Appreciation Holiday Reception”. An annual holiday tradition, this Hermitage family gathering is a wonderful time for fellow members to toast the holidays and renew acquaintances. Complimentary heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the clubhouse and member signature bar service will be on hand. As a reminder, due to the expected high turn out, a $15 guest fee will apply to all non-Club members, and don’t forget Kids Corner will be closed for this event. Reservations are necessary and seating will be on a first come basis. This will be the only dining option available that evening. We hope to see you there! GALLOWAY GRILLE SERVES FULL MENU ON NEW YEAR’S EVE That’s right! Make your reservations early to enjoy dinner at the Club before heading out for a night on the town, or back home for a quiet ringing in of the New Year. The full menu will be served, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. POOL RECONSTRUCTION UPDATE Happy to report the pool project is on schedule! Here are a few images of work in progress.
This is what the parking lot side of the Pool Bath House roof looks like with the old cedar shakes removed. We can't imagine that many of you have actually seen this before. We are now preparing for the green metal roof installation that will match the Sports Center.
This view is of the check in area within the breezeway. It is being prepared to become the new bar area.
This view is from the breezeway entrance looking toward the former screened in porch. This area will eventually become an open access Lanai style porch with considerable floor, wall and ceiling updates.

This view is the pool side of the Bath House where the construction team is preparing for a new drainage system.
This view toward the Sports Center overlooks what will eventually become the new pool deck. Notice the ground pipes up close. Theses are part of the new drain system.
A closer look at the new deck drain pipes.

Mitten Tree Once again our children will collect mittens and hats for needy children in the Goochland area. These mittens and hats should be placed on the Mitten Tree in the Tennis Fitness Center. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will make hands warm in a cold winter.
Goochland Christmas Mother: Hermitage Adopted Family
Hermitage Member Heidi Hall is the Goochland Christmas Mother for 2012. Our club will collect toys and gifts for a special family selected just for us through this program. This deserving family has a single mom who just lost her job and is trying to support 3 children (ages 13, 8, and 7 years old) while looking for another job.
The family has provided a wish list. Ms. Patsy has written down each item and placed them on a tree in the Sports Center. Stop by and select an item off the tree, or call Ms. Patsy (804.784.7262 Ext 305) or Vicky (804.784.7262) for a list of the remaining items on the tree. Donations of food and gift cards are also accepted. Sizes and gender of the family, as well as a sampling of their wish list is provided below.
We appreciate your help and support for this project. Thank you!
They’re home from school and getting antsy. You’re just thinking about what to do to prevent boredom after Christmas and keep them moving, right? Bring them to Haynes and R.J. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (12/26-12/28) after Christmas at 11:30 a.m. for FIT FRENZY and let our guys take over for you – there’s no way your child will be bored! Other than that week between Christmas and New Year’s, we will continue our Fit Frenzy Class on Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. in December. It is always a hit with our kids, aged 9-13 and regardless of your child’s athletic ability or sports interest, these classes incorporate all aspects of FUN physical activities and conditioning for adolescents, based on training movements and drills from different sports. We guarantee that they will have a great time while getting a great workout with their friends. If you have any questions, Haynes and R.J. can be reached at 804.784.4968 or [email protected].

Thank you for all the kind words regarding Thanksgiving. We enjoy preparing the holiday classics as much as people do partaking in them. There is great tradition in this type of celebration food and it brings both the diner and preparer back to the same happy place year after year. Alright, let’s shake off that Norman Rockwell moment and get back to reality. You have people coming over for a party and no time to cook. This is where you push aside all the fussy little food and think about the party in broad strokes. Buy or smoke/roast a turkey, slice it and put it out with home-style rolls, condiments and a variety of spreads. Do the same thing with beef tenderloin or strip loin. Put out some toasted rounds of French bread, good quality crackers, or pitas and an assortment of toppings to let guests make their own canapés. Sliced cheese, Italian meats, chopped olives, pickled vegetables, potted meats, nut butters; these are the ingredients of tasty, labor intensive canapés. Don’t rule out a favorite casserole just because it doesn’t sound cocktail party like. Just make sure the ingredients are cut smaller, the pasta choices are more bite size and it is not too saucy, and then set it out with small plates or bowls. Make it in several smaller pans, you can replace them as they are consumed and chances are they will stay hot without a heat source. Do a crock pot of a favorite soup, and put out demitasse cups for service. Fill in with nuts and chips and you are done. Besides the time saved with this type of party you provide your guests with the option of how they want to eat. There is enough food here for a meal or just a snack. For those of you planning for your holiday parties at home, I have no good news with regards to the cost of food. Luxury beef prices are still up; fish appears to be holding, with strong supplies and robust pricing. Pork is a good value, with whole roasted racks a very regal and classic holiday presentation. I have noticed all the major food magazines are featuring roasted pork or crown roast recipes. Produce is at the mercy of the weather. If severe cold holds off till after the holidays we should be fine. The culinary staff wishes you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Come home for dinner, Chef Michael

9 Holers Last Halloween Hoorah! 813
FROM THE GOLF SHOP: 9 HOLE NEWS
14
Winter is finally upon us with the chilly temperatures putting a hold on our ever improving golf games. When Thursdays roll around, just get a cup of hot chocolate, and curl up next to the fire with your favorite golf magazine. Rest assured, the 9-Hole League will be back in full force before you can swing an iron. The 2012 season ended with two exceptional events. First, we had an outstanding turnout for our 9-Hole Championship with 16 women competing in the 2 day tournament. It was an exciting finish with Laurie Campbell and Myra Wood tying with a score of 111 for 1st Gross. The tie was broken by a match of scorecards with Laurie taking 1st Gross and Myra 2nd Gross. 1st Net winner was Karen Roscoe with a score of 71 and 2nd Net winner was Elsie Katz with a score of 72. Congratulations are in order for all 4 women who finished with terrific scores. The Last Halloween Hoorah took place on October 31st, costumes and all. The 9-Holers are not shy and sure took advantage of the opportunity to parade their costumes both on and off the course. We sure have one festive group of ladies who love a reason to celebrate! Again, a big hand goes out to all participants who helped to end the season in style. 1st Gross winners were Helene Meyer and Candy Davis with a score of 39. 2nd Gross went to Laurel McGeorge and Diane Lum with a score of 42. 1st Net winners were Lynne Laskin and Anna Hedgepeth with a 32 followed by Barbara Maiden and Julie Gray winning 2nd Net with a score of 36. Again, we applaud our 8 winners and all our participants who added to the overall success of the event. As of this newsletter, Laurel McGeorge and Diane Lum have passed the 9-Hole Chairwomen gavel to Betsy Gallagher, Helene Meyer, and Marykay Stainback. Betsy Gallagher will serve as Chairwoman, Helene Meyer as Co-Chair and Marykay Stainback as Assistant Chair. For the past 2 years, Laurel and Diane have done an outstanding job in revitalizing the league. We are so excited to have Betsy, Helene and Marykay’s energy, enthusiasm and creativity contribute to the success of our thriving league. Ladies, you can count on one fun season for 2013! If any 9-Holers are interested in supporting the board or coordinating an event please contact these women, no experience is needed. Finally, if you are not a 9-Holer but have been toying with the idea of joining, please come out and give us a try. We golf every Thursday in a supportive, noncompetitive environment that is as much about having fun as it is about improving your game. The 9-Hole season kicks off in March with a welcome coffee and play begins in April. Look for future announcements and updates in the upcoming newsletter.
To all our 9-Hole members and friends, May this season bring you the joy of a par, The happiness of golfing with friends, And the love of the game.
Peace and Goodwill to All.
Season’s Greetings 9-Holers!

TITLEIST PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTE CERTIFIED GOLF FITNESS INSTRUCTORS
We now have 2 TPI-CGFI on our Fitness Staff: Haynes Morris and Bambi Cocke. In addition, Bambi is now certified as a Level 2 TPI Junior Golf Coach, as well as a Level 2 TPI Medical Professional. A TPI Golf Fitness Instructor has the skills to identify the major physical performance factors that limit most players from reaching their potential. They understand how to effectively screen and identify any physical factors that are limiting a player’s performance, and how to choose and prescribe customized drills and exercises to help eliminate these limitations for good. They are also trained to perform video analysis of the swing and to analyze 3D Kinematic Sequencing. Please contact Bambi Cocke, Director of Fitness and Recreation for more information and to find out more about our Golf Fitness Analysis and Fitness Training.

The Board wishes to extend its gratitude to our outgoing Board members, Ben Harper and Paige Berling. Ben just completed two terms as President, and Paige served a number of vital roles, including that of volunteer coordinator (aka, herding cats) for swim meets. Ben and Paige both served the team with energy and dedication, which will be difficult to duplicate. Thankfully, both Ben and Paige have agreed to continue their involvement with the Hurricanes as crucial volunteers. The Hurricanes could not operate without the continued involvement of all our parent volunteers. Special thanks to Ben and Paige! The important dates and events for the upcoming season have been set, starting with the dates of our pre-seasons practices at the Tuckahoe YMCA. With the holidays upon us, these practices will begin before you know it! If you did not swim this past season, we would love to have you consider swimming next season! We had over 120 swimmers in 2012, but would love to increase that number this year. Kevin Hunt, brother of last year’s head coach Becca Hunt, and a member of the Virginia Tech Swim Team, has consented to be next year’s head coach. Look for more about Kevin in next month’s newsletter! Happy Holidays from the Hurricanes!
