e-Navigation in the North Sea:
the Regional Dimension
One Day Workshop
12th December 2012.
Hotel Schiphol, Rijksweg A4 nr.33, NL- 2132, MA Hoofddorp, Netherlands
http://www.hotelschiphol.nl/
Given the many competing demands on European and neighbouring marine areas, justhow open can the open waters of the North Sea remain to shipping for the future?
What solutions can be found to maintain and promote maritime accessibilityacross the North Sea with safe and efficient access to ports?
As the sea room for ships to manoeuvre decreases due to other uses, how can increasedcongestion be avoided and the risk of vessel collisions and groundings be reduced?
Implementing e-Navigation offers a range of solutions, but will it becomenecessary to restrict shipping to a confined network of sea-lanes?
Your views matterand can help the ACCSEAS project make a real differenceto future maritime safety, efficient berth-to-berth shipping operations,environmental protection, security, economic growth and territorial cohesion ofthe North Sea Region.

11:00-12:30 Workshop 1: Identifying North Sea Navigation Issues and Problems
Facilitated discussion:
Are there areas of traffic congestion in the North Sea today, if so what accident
risks are associated with these areas?
What are the implications of :
- increased density of shipping;
- the growth of offshore installations;
- development of larger less manoeuvrable vessels;
What are the associated risks, such as grounding or collision?
How can safe and efficient access to ports be maintained?
What is the impact on wider logistics routes around the North Sea Region?
Where are there likely to be shipping traffic pinch points and problem areas in
the next 20 years?
