Reeths-Puffer is leading the way in West Michigan, and throughout the State, by working hard to engage families in their child’s literacy development. We are helping families understand how literacy knowledge and skills develop in young children and what parents can do to support their child’s growth at home in fun and meaningful ways.

In October 2015, the three R-P elementary schools began offering the Engaging Families in Children’s Literacy Development program developed by literacy experts, Kathryn Roberts, Gail Jordan, and Nell Duke. In October 2016, we completed our 20th Early Literacy Workshop for Kindergarten parents.

The program was well received by the Kindergarten parents and students alike. Feedback from participating families has been positive.

We would like to recognize Nancy Jaskiw, School Psychologist, the elementary principals, the elementary reading specialists, and other dedicated staff members who helped support the evening events. We also appreciated our supporting partners from Michigan Reading Association (MRA).

In late 2016, the same program will be offered to parents with students at McMillan Early Childhood Center. The goal is to utilize this awesome parent/child interactive learning event to engage more families in learning how simple activities at home and in the community can benefit children’s early literacy development. Don’t miss this great opportunity!

Kindergarteners at Central Elementary have been using their senses to explore apples. They taste tested a red, green and yellow apple to find out which one they liked best. They listened for the crunching sound that happens when you bite into an apple. They touched all the parts of an apple - the

skin, flesh, seeds, core and stem. They watched a video to see how apple cider is made. Best of all, they smelled and tasted homemade applesauce made right in their classroom!

Second Grade Visits the Farm

Mrs. Birr’s, Mrs. Mason’s, and Miss Nauta’s 2nd grade classes, along with Mrs. Langlois’ 1st/2nd grade split class enjoyed a day on the farm - Heritage Farms that is. On October 6th, the classes loaded up the busses and headed to Heritage Farms for a day of learning, exploring, and of course, fun. Students were able to enjoy a hayride while learning about various animals at the farm, including bison and elk. Students were able to watch the process in which Heritage Farms makes their delicious apple cider. After watching the apples go up the conveyor belt to be washed and chopped, they witnessed the mixture being put on to the press where all of the liquid is collected. Everyone was given a complimentary glass of fresh cider and a donut. Thankfully the rain held off long enough for a scavenger hunt through the pumpkin patch and an educational trip through the corn maze.

The Central Elementary Walk/Run-a-thon was a great success. The weather was spectacular and nearly 50 families participated in our Family Walk-Off at the RPHS track. Each class also walked an additional 20 minutes at school as part of our Healthy Schools initiative. It was wonderful to see grandparents, parents and siblings supporting our cause to raise money for classrooms and field trips. Sparky (Central’s mascot) made a special appearance to cheer on the kids.

RPEL Hustles KindnessWhat does it mean to Hustle Kindness? Madison “Peach”

Steiner started the Hustle Kindness movement to “encourage the intentional desire to reach out to family, friends, and strangers with acts of kindness.” Each Friday, people all over the country wear their Hustle

Kindness shirts and share the acts of kindness they are doing for others. Reeths-Puffer had the opportunity to join the Hustle with our own custom shirts. RPEL staff inquired about having Madison design our own green and white shirts, so we could promote kindness and green and white days on Fridays. Families across our District had

the opportunity to order the shirts via the website through November 7.

Proceeds from each shirt benefit Peach’s Neet Feet, a nonprofit started by Madison to hustle kindness to kids fighting cancer, recovering from burns, and those living with craniofacial differences, epilepsy, and a variety of other diagnoses. Children receive a pair of custom painted shoes with artwork of their choice. This pair of special shoes often becomes a conversation starter for kiddos undergoing hospitalizations, painful treatments, and surgeries. This charity touched our community when Avery Cooper, a student in our district, received a pair of Neet Feet a few years ago. She was very proud of this pair of shoes and would show them off every chance she got.

Go Hustle some R-P kindness today!

The Third Almost-Annual Water Festival for Muskegon County third graders took place on September 22. Students from RPEL rotated through four activity stations led by local professionals. They learned about aquatic habitats, the water cycle, human use, water chemistry and more. This was a great experience for students, teachers and parents to participate in learning outside of the classroom. This study trip connected to many third grade state standards; two that were emphasized the most include:

Biodiversity and Humans - Populations live in a variety of habitats, and change in those habitats affects the organisms living there.

Natural Hazards - A variety of natural hazards result from natural processes. Humans cannot eliminate natural hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts.

Staff and students look forward to continuing this community partnership!

RPEL Kindergarten Goes Bananas Over ZooPhonicsOn September 30, Reeths-Puffer Elementary Kindergarteners went to John Ball Zoo to study their Zoophonic friends. Every child went on a scavenger hunt looking for all their zoo friends. If they couldn’t find Allie Alligator, they had to find another animal that started with an A. Students were able to explore the tiger exhibit, monkeys, and penguins. There was even a gorilla who blew kisses. This year, kindergarten students will have a chance to attend a study trip a month. Kayla Teerman and her math partner built the number 168. Then Kayla wrote it in

the Expanded Form. All in a days’ work at Twin Lake Elementary!

Our Number Knowledge is ExpandingThe number-savvy students in Mrs. Kinstner’s second grade class have learned how to write 2- and 3-digit numbers in Standard Form. They’ve also learned how to build those numbers using base-ten blocks (Pictorial or Model Form). But they have expanded their number knowledge even more by writing those numbers in the Expanded Form. Expanded Form is a way to write numbers by adding the value of its digits. For example, if given the number 284 (Standard Form), students would build it using 2 hundred “flats,” 8 ten “longs,” and 4 tiny unit cubes (Pictorial or Model Form). Then they write that number in Expanded Form: 200 + 80 + 4. There’s also a Written or Word Form: two hundred eighty-four. Hopefully YOUR number knowledge has now expanded, too!

Twin Lake Elementary first graders are enjoying reading and writing workshop and discovering ways to help their partner and classmates with their learning. Students work daily to celebrate the qualities of good writing with each other (focus, setting, speech bubbles, end in the moment endings, and punctuation) and good reading (making sure their partner doesn’t miss anything, listening to retelling, helping with tricky parts, use of storyteller voice and asking what they have learned from the text). Students have so many great strategies they have learned already and also have learned the benefit of sharing and helping others!

ROCKET LANDING Community of Learning

Every Friday, 15 minutes before dismissal, first through fourth grade learners go to the gym for “Rocket Landing.” Rocket Landing is a time for the Twin Lake School Community to celebrate learning. During this time, the school community recognizes Rocket Star slip drawing winners for the week, learners with perfect attendance, as well as a featured Rocket Lead Learner. The Lead Learner shares learning that has been happening in their classroom. Brain Frames, reading stamina, data binders, goal setting, and Spanish vocabulary for family members are a few examples given by our Lead Learner. It’s a great way to celebrate hard work and the new Lead Learner for the week.

WALK-A-THON HELPS WITH HOOP HOUSEOn October 2, R-P TLE families came together to walk three miles around the Twin Lake Park area. The goal was to exercise, while raising money for a hoop house for an outdoor garden. Success!! Not only did staff and students have fun, they also raised over $5,000! Thanks to the families and friends who donated! Keep your eyes on our garden, as the hoop house is coming!

Celebrating our Learning

in Room 15

The second graders in Mrs. Kinstner’s class have been busy, busy, busy. After finishing their first reading unit, they took time to celebrate! Students enjoyed some juice and a cookie, then danced to the ever-popular song, “Celebration!” by Kool and the Gang. Success, however, is more fun when shared. So they grabbed their book boxes and shared their improved reading skills with some little buddies: stuffed animals! Students were all smiles while reading to their stuffed buddies, and their teacher was all smiles watching them read - just for the FUN of it!

This year in Room 15, we decided it would be fun to mix things up when it comes to how we want to learn! Mrs. Kolbe applied for a grant through Donors Choose to get different seating options into her classroom. Within 6 days, the project was fully funded thanks to generous donations from the community and family members of Mrs. Kolbe’s Students!

Room 15 will be receiving:

The idea behind flexible seating is to give students the option to choose how they want to sit when they are learning. They have the opportunity to make a responsible choice by picking a “smart seat” and placing it in the room where they can be successful throughout the day. Every student has different needs. Students need movement, a chance to walk around while working, or even given the opportunity to bounce or stand as they work on core instruction. Mrs. Kolbe is very passionate about flexible seating and is eager to give it a try this year. Mrs. Kolbe adds, “By allowing my students to a pick seat that is comfortable to them, they will be able to let their extra energy escape throughout the day as they learn. We sure are a busy group of second graders!” Original desks and chairs will stay in the room for students that want to choose a more traditional approach. Students are eager to get to school and pick their special learning spot! Great things are sure to happen for us this year!

A Long Walk to Water Journey...During the third week of school, fifth graders at RPI began their three day journey of a “long walk to water” to make their class reading of, A Long Walk to Water, more purposeful. To connect to the character of Nya, Rockets carried empty one gallon containers as they walked one mile to Muskegon River then one mile back to school with their containers filled with water from the river. Nya’s character in A Long Walk to Water had to carry a 40 gallon container, two to three hours, twice-a-day, to a pond to get water for her family. This water was not clean. It was water her family needed to survive, but it was the same water that also made them sick.

By the third day of walking to the Muskegon River, many Rockets began to realize not only how fortunate they are to have clean water to drink, but how exhausting it must be for children like Nya to have to walk hours to get water, often in unsafe conditions, and the water isn’t even safe to drink. Comments from students like, “I was so thirsty when

I walked,” or “I just wanted to race to the drinking fountain when I got back to school,” made students realize how precious clean water should be to all of us.

It is within authentic learning experiences like these, where students can truly learn what empathy is all about and how stepping outside of themselves to walk in the shoes of another person, can change how they think - for the better!

Students in Word Generation classes have group discussions almost daily. In this picture, students are sharing what they have learned from an interview they conducted with an adult in their life. After this conversation, they wrote a response to the question, “How do your communities change as you grow older?”

Word Generation is an instructional strategy out of Harvard University. Our Rockets spend the year learning about words that have the most impact on their life and the world around them. These words also can and will be used across all their cores.

Learning CommunitiesLearning is a process of building knowledge through experiences, study or being taught. RPI students are asked to engage in their learning throughout the day. The three ways teachers and staff design the day for learning is with experiences, study and direct instruction.

Students that are in their “Core” classes and “Other Cores” known as specials are having experiences. Gone are the days when students sit in their seats, are asked to answer questions 1 to 22, and then turn their papers into the teacher to be graded. Students are saturated with experiences throughout the day. The most common strategies include group work and peer to peer conversations around questions and problems. They also are looking at the world around them through Meijer Trail observations in science, to youtube videos of current events. After they are given a prompt, they have to construct meaning with questioning each other, debate and advocacy. In Vocal Music, students are asked to analyze their mini performances and share what they thought was successful and why.

Students learn through study at RPI. This is done with units and concepts that go across content areas. Students may work on a piece in Language Arts that has content from Social Studies. There is one technology device to every two students at RPI. For a student to be a contributor, they must have knowledge to share with the people in their groups. This means that they may research the topic at home, read a book beyond the classroom, or discuss the topics with their families at dinner and in the community.

RPI learners have opportunities to learn from teachers and each other. Classes are set up for conversations, research and debate. Teachers facilitate conversations with questions and reflections. They continue to look for opportunities to build on each student’s knowledge and strengths to take them further in their thinking. Teachers use assessments to make informed decisions in the classroom, make instructional changes to their classes, and support students that need more support. Our most common way of gathering information for instruction is through conversations with students, asking questions for reflections, having students self-assess and through group peer discussion around the topic.

Learning is a complicated business, but our students continue to push us to be a better learning community!

The Power of Yet

I can’t do that, I don’t get that, I am not a good at math, YET. As soon as you add “yet” on the end of the sentence, it changes the thought from a focus on what you are unable to do to an optimistic view of what you can do with practice and perseverance. At RPMS, we want to create a culture of students that embrace challenges, persist in the face of obstacles, learn from criticism, understand the importance of effort in the path to mastery, and are inspired by the success of others. We started our school year with a flurry of activities to ground our students in the science behind a growth mindset. We are determined to create a culture of grit and perseverance. On September 16, students learned the science behind how their brain acquires new knowledge and that challenging experiences are something to embrace. Students from the high school joined us by sharing their experiences with failure, persistence, hard work, and growth. Weaving in daily opportunities to teach and model a growth mindset, in addition to engaging students in challenging curriculum, will help us reach higher at Reeths-Puffer Middle School. For more resources on what parents can do to support a growth mindset, visit The Mindset Kit for great resources. (https://www.mindsetkit.org/growth-mindset-parents)

Huddle! At RPMS, our focused goals are to provide a challenging and engaging curriculum, a physically and emotionally safe environment, and opportunies to grow socially and emotionally for every single student in our building. One plan put in place to support our goals is a puposeful use of time each Thursday, when students are grouped for a 30 minute block, for Huddle. Our middle school Huddle is similar to a team huddle with the purpose of reviewing the game plan, elevating excitement, and unifying a team. We use this time to learn about, reflect on, and process topics that are important as middle school students navigate choices over the next few years. Our students have engaged and reflected on the topics of Respect, Pride, Maturity, and Success. They will soon learn about OK2Say, the Muskegon Area Promise and other college awareness topics, a county-wide Be Nice campaign, and how to be a positive bystander. In addition to the core curriculum, please talk to your student about what they are learning during this time.

MS PTO and HS Partner in Gaga PitThanks to the Middle School PTO and High School

Stagecraft Class, middle school students have the

option of running, throwing, jumping, and dodging

within the octagonal walls of a new gaga pit during

lunch time. The high school students constructed

a sturdy pit that will bring students hours of fun

and exercise. If you are interested in joining the

PTO in providing opportunities and resources

for our students, consider joining us on the third

Wednesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. in the

On October 24, representatives of Brickley DeLong, PC, presented the results of the annual independent audit to the Reeths-Puffer Board of Education. The District had another successful year-end audit, and the following highlights were emphasized to the Board of Education and Superintendent Edwards:

1. An unmodified or “clean” audit opinion, the highest level of opinion that the auditors can give.2. A successful single audit of Federal grant programs revealed no findings, reinforcing the District as a low-risk auditee.3. The District’s general fund reserves, or fund balance, decreased by approximately $133,000 for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016, better than expected through

the budget process.

In addition, the District applied for, and was awarded, the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting through ASBO (Association of School Business Officials) International for the second straight year. This award program is focused on school district financial reporting, and has high standards for reporting and accountability. Reeths-Puffer Schools’ strategic plan includes the valued goal of “the open sharing of District financial information,” and this award is another symbol of the District’s commitment to this goal.

The District finance department, led by Finance Director Jason Helsen, first committed to this process in the 2014-15 fiscal year. Reeths-Puffer Schools is the only district in Muskegon County that is a current recipient of this award, and one of only a handful in the West Michigan region and the State of Michigan as a whole. The audited financial statements and single audit report can be found on the District’s website, and questions can be directed to Jason Helsen, Director of Finance.

New Feature on R-P Go-Green App This fall, the RPHS counseling department (Mr. Schlaff, Mr. Smith, and Mrs. Olson) has worked with teacher Mr. Bryan Ross to get on board with the “Go Green” Reeths-Puffer App. The newest feature of the app is called “Graduation Requirements” (with a mortar board icon) which counselors will be updating a few weeks after each semester is completed. This site is an attempt to have a visual component for students, parents, and teachers to see which graduation requirements have been completed by students, indicated by a green box, and which graduation requirements have not yet been completed by students, indicated by a red box. Once all components have been met, and the student has earned the minimum of 22 credits necessary for graduation, the student will have the “Green” light to graduate!

The site will then be updated about three weeks after each semester, as it takes time for teachers to submit grades and for counselors to input this information into the app for all our students. This tool will be a benefit for students scheduling for their 2017-18 classes in March, as well as helping students and parents to understand the sometimes confusing graduation requirements and allowable substitutions.

R-P Educator Recognized for Innovation

R-P speech pathologist, Julie Raynor recently was honored for her innovative idea of creating the high school’s “Communication’s Café” to help students with communication impairments have a safe place to meet new friends and enjoy conversations that foster an improvement in their communication skills. Ms. Raynor sat down with MSU Head Coach,

Tom Izzo, to share her work with our students. After her conversation with coach Izzo, Ms. Raynor was presented with a $500.00 check that will be used to continue building

communication skills with Rocket Students.

REGULAR BOARD MEETINGSEducational Services Building, 991 W. Giles Road, 5:30 p.m.

MORNING SOCIAL TIME RPI learners can arrive at school as early as 7:15 a.m. This time is for students to gather in their homerooms to socialize, finish homework, research for class, eat breakfast, seek out extra help for learning, or play games. A group of five students was not satisfied with this and asked Mr. Smith, “why don’t we just start our learning at 7:15… we are here?” After asking the question, they created a plan to implement a learning group called “Free Rice.” This loyal group of students answers questions based on Common Core Standards in many subject areas. For each correct

answer, a company donates five grains of rice to a community that has food shortages. Since starting their learning group, they have accumulated 25,000+ grains of rice and the amount continues to grow. Students enjoy having their learning turn into action for the world around them.
