Industry Insight

The chemical sector consists of many small industries covering hundreds of segments and more than 70 000 product lines. Products can be roughly segmented into basic chemicals, polymers, specialty products and agrochemicals. Three main business models can be distinguished in the chemical industry: Asset driven: These companies explore crude oil or gas and refine it into basic chemicals. Access to raw materials is a critical success factor. Integrated: Besides refining crude oil, these players go further downstream the value chain. They also produce polymers and some even produce specialty chemicals. Specialties: These players buy intermediate products (basic chemicals, polymers) and process these products to specialty products which are sold on the basis of performance or functionality. There are two types of specialty players, broad based and focused players. Focused players operate in niche, often emerging, markets. Broad based players operate in large mature (commoditised) markets. This is the preferred model of Decongel Sub Saharan Africa. The chemical specialty industry is the largest of its kind in Africa. It is highly complex and widely diversified, with end products often being composed of a number of chemicals that have been combined in some wayDeconGel Sub Saharan Africa will be positioned at the edge of what the decontamination market will bear, competing with the name-brand chemical firms. The pricing of unique chemical solutions targeted at clients and the extractive industries fits with the general positioning of its providing highly differentiated and niche chemical solutions.
