Titles

The titles are in white bold eligible Calibri (body) font.

The titles slowly fade in they pause for a few

moments and gradually fade out again just leaving

the title ‘The Hunger Games,’ as seen in the right

bottom picture. The first title gives a brief introductionas to what is happening in the first 15 minutes of the

film. The titles are plain as it add s to the dreary

atmosphere in the film. The titles sum up previous

events simply, to save time so the main plot can

unravel and so the context of the film is understood.

Camera shots

A wide range of shots are used in the opening of

this film, for example while Katniss and her younger

sister are talking before anyone has been entered

into the hunger games, we see a close up ofKatniss’ younger sister’s face. We see more close

ups in the opening of the film, this adds to the

emotional pain of how the characters are felling and

uncertainty of what is about to happen. Close ups

are there so the audience can relate to the

characters.

In the opening we also see, shot reverse shot for

conversations, a few over the shoulder shots , both

of these shots are extremely important as they add

to the variety. These shots also make the

conversations between two people more interesting

and engaging. These shots are often used while

one character is speaking to another.

Camera shots

After two characters had been chosen to compete in the

hunger game we see a establishing areal shot of

the city. An establishing shot is important as it

establishes a location. This shows the audiencethe place that the scene occurs in so they are

familiar with the surroundings, which engages the

audience. An establishing shot has also been used

here to introduce a completely new scene.

Mise-en-scene

In the fist shot we are introduced to a dim lit early morning

sunset. The lighting is cold, blue and dull this initially

creates a dark atmosphere to the film itself. We are also

firstly introduced to people by the sounds of screaming

which creates a distressing mood and atmosphere that the

audience sympathise with.

We are then presented with a teenage girl and a young girl

holding on another in a firm embrace. The eldest girl

Kantiss appears to be comforting the youngest one. This

indicates that the girls have a strong relationship and look

out for one another. Which is shown in the next few shots.

The music in what looks to be like a market place is slow

humming which works well with the dark dim lighting. The

lighting is kept the same throughout the beginning of the

film; dark, blue and cold. The lighting and the location is

extremely important as it creates different atmospheres and

scenarios.

Mise-en-scene

We are presented with people dressed in bright bold colours with eccentric make on which gives

viewers the impression that these individuals are loud, brash and not to be trusted.

Furthermore, these individuals are also shown as untrustworthy due to the low key lighting

which adds to the danger of the scene. Their tone of voice is also shown to be abrupt and

loud which emphasises their authority and dominance over the other districts.

Katniss is also seen wearing a pail blue dress at the start of the film which shows her to be calm

and peaceful, however in this scene it is also used to represent her fear and sadness

towards her sister being nominated. The pail blue dress also represents the scene as a

whole as sad and to also show an uncomfortable atmosphere between the young adults

and children

Editing

In this scene where Katniss is running through the burning woods thereare a range of different types of shots such as match on action. This happens a lot in this scene. As the camera changes during itallows the scene to flow more smoothly.

Match on action also changes the pace of the scene, such as when

Katniss is running through the woods there is a mid shot of herwhich allows the viewer to see what is happening, and then thecamera changes to a close up of her feet. The close-ups allow theviewer to relate to how she's feeling and draws them further in tothe scene. In this case Close ups are used to show how tired sheis, and to show the audience that she is gasping for breath. Thisalso adds tension to the scene, which creates a whole differentatmosphere for the viewer.

Furthermore we are shown a close up of her feet which makes the scenemove quickly. The pace also adds a sense of the unknown as to

what will happen next. The music in this scene is at a fast pace, which enthrals a sense of darkness to it which adds to theambience. There has also been added in screaming and shoutingon top of the music as well as the deep panting and footsteps ofcharacters.

We are then shown a long shot of a dark haired girl running at katnisswith a knife. The use of a long shot creates a sense of unease andapprehension. Which the viewer finds relatable.

We are the introduced to a slow close up of a teenage boys face, whichis slowly moved to a mid shot.

Sound

In the first 10 seconds of the film there’s birds tweeting this creates a this creates a tranquil,

ambient atmosphere which makes the view feel safe, which contrasts as to how the scene

looks.

In beginning of the film there's non-diegetic sounds such as alight humming which creates byconfusing the viewers as screams seem unexpected.

a calm relaxing atmosphere which is quickly disturbed by torturous cries, which add tension to

the scene

In this film there is also a large use of synthetic sounds. Such as when Katniss is running

through the burning wood, loud fast music is playing over the top of her panting for breath. This helps build up the atmosphere in the scene by speeding up both the music and the

camera work which creates different relatable feelings and emotions on both the viewer

and characters. Sound can increase and change the atmosphere by creating different

moods and tones that viewers can relate to and have a connection to.

Conclusion

This film had an exceptional use of camera shots, such as areal, long shot, mid shot, close ups

and match on action so from this film I will take the use of many different shots and also

the use of different types of unusual angles to make my film look more interesting andcreative. I am also going to take more time in thinking about how I can change the

atmosphere and pace just by using different shots.

As well as the camera shots I also feel that the lighting is something that I need to take into

consideration and how it can change the mood of a film.

I also feel that costumes and make up is a highly important part in filming and I will make surethat my costumes are appropriate and fit the theme of my short film.
