ALTIOR SETS RECORD WITH THIRD CELEBRATION WINStar two-mile chaser Altior landed a third successive Gr.1 Celebration Chase yesterday at Sandown Park on the closing day of the 2018/19 British National Hunt season. FROST FREEZES OUT RIVALS IN OAKSEY CHASEBryony Frost was crowned Champion conditional jockey for the past National Hunt season yesterday and the Devon native came back from injury to make a winning return in the Gr.2 Oaksey Chase (run for the Menorah Challenge Trophy) aboard Black Corton.

Cobra De Mai (Great Pretender) set a decent pace up front, while the winner was positioned in midfield until taking closer order halfway down the back straight. Restrained soon after, the winner made his move to the front before two out. A decent leap at the last put the seal on victory in the 2m6½f test. The winning son of Laverock went on to win by 11 lengths from Gold Present (Presenting), with five lengths back to San Benedeto (Layman).

Frost said: “How many fairy tales am I allowed to have and how many horses allow me to have them? Out there was a lot of pressure on me and I didn’t want to do wrong by him.

“I know we won by a long way, but I wasn’t letting him get caught today. The fire was back in his belly and I adore the little horse and the team behind him. He is one of my best horses and I love him dearly.”

The eight-year-old finally had his day this season yesterday, having been runner-up in four of his five starts. This was a third Graded win over fences and 14th win in 30 races.

Bred by Dominique Guyon, Black Corton is the sole winner from two runners out of the twice-raced Pour Le Meilleur, a Video Rock half-sister to the Swiss Listed chase winner Vicomte Alco (Dom Alco).

“Nico said he is not quite as quick as he was, but I think that has been coming for the last year, so that’s fine – now is the time to do what you all have been telling me to do for two years!”

Bred by Paddy Behan and a Goffs Land Rover Sale graduate, Altior is unbeaten over obstacles, his two defeats having only come in bumper company. A half-brother to the year older Gr.2-winning hurdler Princess Leya (Old Vic), they are amongst four winners out of the Gr.3-winning hurdler Monte Solaro (Key Of Luck).

YOUNEVERCALL GALLOPS RIVALS INTO SUBMISSIONThe final Graded event of the National Hunt season was the 2m5½f Gr.2 Select Hurdle, which was blown apart by the Kim Bailey-trained Younevercall.

The son of Yeats, who had been given a wind operation since running eighth in the Gr.1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot just before Christmas, jumped fluently throughout and went to the front around halfway. Once into the home straight, he kept finding when asked by David Bass and simply galloped his rivals into submission. His winning margin over On The Blind Side (Stowaway) was nine lengths, with 12 lengths back to Thomas Campbell (Yeats).

Bailey said: “He is a lovely horse. He has had a few issues in his life. We went to Ireland two years ago and thought he would win but he came back with a hairline fracture, so he has been a difficult horse to train.”

The lightly-raced eight-year-old has now won six of his 12 starts and was bred by Paddy Kennedy. A graduate of the Tattersalls Ireland and Goffs sales rings, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3-placed Afasheen (Presenting) and the dam of the Gr.1-winning hurdler Black Op, who was fourth in this contest. Younevercall is out of the Listed-winning hurdler Afarka.

IMPRESSIVE TALKISCHEAP PERFORMSThe final big handicap of the season, the 3m5f Gr.3 bet365 Chase was won in fine style by the Alan King-trained novice Talkischeap (Getaway), who was given an ultra-confident ride by Wayne Hutchinson.

The pace was solid throughout with the hero from 12 months ago Step Back (Indian River) attempting to make all once again and the winner keeping tabs on the front pack. Racing down the back straight on the final circuit, the new leader was the 2016 hero The Young Master (Echo Of Light) and he was sent to try and regain the title on the run to three out. However, the winner had crept closer and jumped to the front at the last, after which he readily put ten lengths between him and The Young Master, who had made a serious mistake at the second, nearly depositing

Sam Waley-Cohen into the turf. Step Back kept on for third, nine lengths behind the runner-up. Despite decent ground, the nine horses that completed the race were strung out all over Esher.

King said: “We’ve been very happy with him, but I didn’t expect that performance. I think on this ground we didn’t have any doubts about the stamina, but you never know until you try. He was always in the comfort zone. He never missed a beat.

“I’m not a fan of the [Grand] National, but we will have to give it some consideration, I suppose. He [owner Charles Dingwall] is a great mate and is a pleasure to train for. He has always got his opinion, but is very constructive and helpful.

“[The Ladbrokes Trophy] would be in the equation, but he is probably marginally better going right-handed, although he has run well around Newbury. I suppose he will have an entry in that.”

A three-time Irish point to point winner, who then won three times over hurdles, Talkischeap was sent over fences in November and was runner-up in the Gr.2 Berkshire Novices’ Chase. Having got off the mark in a two runner event at Doncaster in January, he was then second in another novice, before finishing fifth a Gr.3 handicap chase at Kempton Park in late February, his last start.

Bred by Michael Veale and a graduate of both the Goffs and Tattersalls Cheltenham sales rings, he is the best of two winners out of the unraced Milan mare Carrigmoorna Oak. Her dam is a Camden Town full-sister to the Gr.2 (then) Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Cockney Lass (grandam of the Gr.1-winning chaser Great Field) and the Gr.1 Irish Champion Hurdle winner Cockney Lad.

Gr.2-winning hurdler Lyreen Legend (Saint Des Saints), who was three times Gr.1-placed.

FOLLET NEEDS NO LUCK IN AMADOUThe four-year-old hurdling scene has been a mixed affair this spring, with a number of horses putting out claims, but none truly establishing themselves as the foremost home contender for the expected British and Irish challenge for next month’s Gr.1 Prix Alain du Breuil. However, Feu Follet put behind a disappointing last start with an authoritative victory in the Gr.2 Prix Amadou.

A two-time winner over both hurdles and fences last year, he won the Gr.3 Prix d’Indy in March, but was only second earlier this month in the Gr.3 Prix de Pepinvast, which was won by the re-opposing L’Autonomie (Blue Bresil), who benefited from a fine ride that day. In yesterday’s 3900m test, Bertrand Lestrade kept things simple and sent his mount straight into the lead. A serious mistake at the seventh did not stop him from winning and having jumped the last well, he extended away to a five length win under a hand ride. Polirico (Cokoriko), who was reverting to hurdles having had jumping issues over fences the last twice, was second, two and a half lengths in front of L’Autonomie.

Bred by Ecurie D, he was the third Stakes winner for Guillaume Macaire on the day and the a son of Kapgarde is the first foal out of the Sageburg mare Folle De Toi. She is a full-sister to the French Listed-winning hurdler Fou Et Sage and the pair are out of a winning Poliglote full-sister to the Gr.2 Triumph Hurdle Trial winner Far West.

DOCTOR CALLS THE SHOTS IN INGREThe Gr.3 Prix Ingre, a chase over 4400m, has been a fine guide to the winner of the Gr.1 Grand Steeple-Chase next month over the years and was yesterday taken by Docteur De Ballon. The son of Doctor Dino, whose career has been blighted by injury, landed a hard-fought win.

French steeplechasing stalwart Milord Thomas (Kapgarde) took the field of seven along for the first part of the race from Saint Goustan Blue (Blue Bresil), who usually runs from the front. With a circuit to run, Crystal Beach (Network) took over, with Milord Thomas making a slow leap at the water in front of the stands. The leader increased the pace, travelled comfortably and his number of challengers was down to five when Saint Goustan Blue went at the big rail ditch. The leader was still in front at the last, but he was soon treading water and Docteur De Ballon, who had raced out the back and taken closer order in the home straight, came through near the line to win by a short neck. Second home was Dalia Grandchamp (Kapgarde), who moved in near unison to the winner, five lengths clear of Crystal Beach.

This was just the 11th race in the seven-year-old’s career and he has now won six of them. A Listed winner over fences at Auteuil in November 2017, he was runner-up in March 2018’s Gr.3 Prix Troytown, but was then off the track until winning a Listed hurdle at Auteuil earlier this month.

Bred by Mme Robert Gasche-Luc and Suc Michel Boulay, the Louisa Carberry-trained runner is the first foal out of the six-time winner Nile Breeze, a Phantom Breeze daughter of the Listed-winning chaser Nile Bonheur (Turgeon).

NO SAGA FOR COTTIN IN PRINTEMPSThe ‘Quinte’ handicap of the day was the Gr.3 Grande Course de Haies de Printemps and a full complement of 20 runners lined up for the 4300m hurdle, which was won by Paul’s Saga, who was

GOLIATH CONTINUES DOMINATION OF FOUR-YEAR-OLD CHASE DIVISIONWith three weeks until the major spring meeting in French National Hunt racing, Le week-end du Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, Auteuil staged the final major set of trials – a pair of Gr.2s, Gr.3s and Listed races.

The main event in terms of prize money was the €210,000 Gr.2 Prix Jean Stern for the four-year-old chasers and Goliath Du Berlais continued his dominance of the division.

The entire son of Saint Des Saints made all, having set a decent gallop. Jumping fluently and travelling strongly, he was easily the best and only had to be hand-ridden after the last to defeat Bel Apsis (Apsis), the only horse that could live with the winner. There was a distance back to the mare Thrilling (Network), who was patiently ridden to obtain further black type.

Second on three occasions in four starts over hurdles last year, his attentions were turned to the larger obstacles in August and he has now won five of six. His sole defeat came in last November’s Gr.2 Prix Congress. In March he won the Prix Duc D’Anjou and Prix Fleuret, both Gr.3 events. The Gr.1 Prix Ferdinand Dufaure in three weeks looks his for the taking.

Bred by Jean-Marc Lucas, he races for Haras d’Etreham, Stephane Szwarc and Palmyr Racing and is one of four winners out of the very good racemare King’s Daughter, winner of the Gr.3 Prix Bournosienne and a King’s Theatre half-sister to the

STAKES VICTORY FOR HEY GAMANHey Gaman has run some mighty races in defeat in his career, including when beaten only a neck in last year’s Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, but yesterday saw him land a thoroughly-deserved victory in the Listed EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes at Leicester.

Partnered by Frankie Dettori, the son of New Approach was smartly away in the 7f contest and hardly saw another rival, making all to score comfortably by two and a quarter lengths from Larchmont Lad (Footstepsinthesand), with Cardsharp (Lonhro) a head away in third.

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Ltd, Hey Gaman failed to find a buyer in the ring during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and was sent into training with James Tate for Sultan Ali. Winner of three starts at two, including the Listed Washington Singer Stakes, he was runner-up by a neck in the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes, and returned at three to be third in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes prior to his French Classic bid, and was also third in the Gr.2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein.

He is the first foal and winner out of the Dubawi mare Arsaadi, who has since produced his winning full-brother Marbhan. Arsaadi was herself a winner at two and Gr.2-placed and Listed-placed from 7f-1m and hails from the family of the top sprinter The Tatling.

making her handicap debut on just her fourth start over obstacles. The daughter of Martaline, a dual winner over hurdles on her

sole 2018 starts late last year, was given a patient ride by Geoffrey Re. Arriving on the scene travelling strongly two out, she came hard against the near rail and found plenty when required to overhaul Jimmy De Lille (Linda’s Lad) halfway up the run in. The winning margin over the second, who went to the front on the turn for home and jumped the last markedly out to his left, was half a length, with two lengths back to Zarisk (No Risk At All).

A three-time winner on the Flat, she moved to David Cottin last year. Having won her first two, she was only tenth on her first 2019 start at Compiegne at the end of March.

Bred by Philippe Ouvry and Ecurie des Vives Terres and carrying the colours of Gerald Laroche, Paul’s Saga is a half-sister to the high-class Flat performer Siljan’s Saga (Sagamix), winner of a pair of Gr.2s and four times Gr.1-placed, the Listed-winning hurdler Boston Paris (Kapgarde) and the dam of the two-time Listed hurdle-placed Bai De Baie. They are out of the three-year-old winner Humoriste (Saint Cyrien).

ONE-TWO FOR GABEUR AND MACAIREUpgraded from a conditions event at the turn of the year, the Listed Prix Go Ahead for three-year-old colts and geldings over hurdles resulted in a one-two for Marie-Christine Gabeur and Palmyr Racing, with Hipsters (Poliglote) beating For Fun (Motivator). Both are trained by master trainer Guillaume Macaire.

Having taken himself to the front with a circuit to run, Hipsters set an honest pace and, despite landing on all four legs at the last, he drew away in the closing stages to a four length win. For Fun, who raced just behind the leader throughout, pulled three lengths clear of fellow entire King Edward (Martaline).

A winner on debut at Compiegne on 9th April by eight lengths, the winning gelding was bred by Gabeur out of the winning Monsun mare Baladewa, whose six other winners include the Gr.3 Premio Staffe d’Oro winner Babawi (Dubawi). This is a family that includes the Gr.2-winning sire Bathyrhon and the Gr.3-winning sire Banyumanik.

DINA FENDS OFF ATERISK IN GIROFLAThe fillies’ equivalent of the above contest, the Listed Girofla, saw an upset with Doctor Dino’s daughter Invincible Dina, a homebred of Antonia Devin’s, getting the better of Aterisk (No Risk At All), who was two from two coming into the 3000m test.

The early leader La Cafe Ine (Enrique) deposited her rider Nicolas Gauffenic at the third, leaving Tombee Du Ciel (Zanzibari) to lead from the winner. Still in front two out, she had given best to the main protagonists before the last, which the pair jumped in unison. However, Invincible Dina, who was receiving 3kg, found extra near the line to record a length win. Third home was Tombee Du Ciel, six lengths behind Aterisk.

The Francois Nicolle trainee had made one previous start when finishing fourth to Aterisk, beaten just over seven lengths, in the Prix Champoreau on 6th April.

Invincible Dina is a half-sister to a winner by Saint Des Saints and they are the first two foals out of the Listed Prix Finot (Pouliches) runner-up Ladies Vision, a Turgeon full-sister to the Gr.3 Prix Fleuret winner Ladies Choice and the Listed hurdle winner Lady Town. The second dam, the Listed chase winner Ladies View (Comrade In Arms), was bred by the Devins and this is also the family of their Gr.1 Prix La Haye Jousselin winner Shannon Rock.

running on Friday, the closing day of the Keeneland meeting. The daughter of Multiplex, who had been knocking on the

door for a first Stakes win on her last two starts when runner-up in both the Gr.3 The Very One Stakes and Gr.3 Orchid Stakes, both times beaten a head, was given a masterful ride by Jose Ortiz. The initial pace was slow and the winner was moved around rivals to take the lead passing the post with a circuit to run. Having been allowed to go four lengths clear exiting the back straight, she was ridden into the straight, and despite tiring late on, she scored a length win. Fellow British-bred Gaining (American Post), a Listed winner for Criquette Head-Maarek in 2017 and winner of the Gr.3 Prix Fille de l’Air at Toulouse for Henri-Francois Devin last November, was given far too much to do racing in last and made great strides in the straight, but to no avail. Coachwhip, an American-bred daughter of So You Think was third, five and three quarters of a length behind the runner-up.

Winning trainer Roger Attfield commented: “I thought she’d either be on the lead or second early in the race and I was a little concerned that she might be on the lead the whole way, which always bothers me a little bit. After he turned into the stretch and he made that decision, I said, ‘thank goodness, that’s a really good move there.’ It was a really good ride. I want to congratulate him on that.

“When he took command of the race and down the backside she opened up enough that I felt reasonably comfortable. I thought, please, God, don’t catch her now. She’s a gutsy mare. We’re just delighted with her.”

An eight-time winner, all in handicap company, when trained by Jonathan Portman, the Allseasons Bloodstock-bred 13,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 3 purchase by Kern/Lillingston Association, was winning Stateside for the first time in nine starts.

A full-sister to a dual winner and a half-sister to a winner by Captain Gerrard, Ickymasho is the best runner out of the unraced Icky Woo, a Mark Of Esteem daughter of the Gr.3 (then) Flying Five Stakes winner Bunty Boo (Noalto).

GHAIYYATH TO PUT ARC CREDENTIALS TO THE TEST IN PRIX GANAYCharlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) will bid for a first top-level win in the Gr.1 Prix Ganay today and, should he run well, he could be targeted at the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The four-year-old made just one start last season, winning the Gr.3 Prix du Prince d’Orange, but he made a big impression when winning his seasonal reappearance over course and distance in the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt three weeks ago.

He had two of today’s rival behind him in the Prix d’Harcourt. Andre Fabre’s Soleil Marin (Kendargent), who had won the Gr.3 Prix Exbury three weeks previously, was a length and a half in arrears, while Fabrice Chappet’s Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat scorer Intellogent (Intello) was five lengths adrift in third.

The high-class field also includes last year’s Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Study Of Man (Deep Impact) from Pascal Bary and Fabre’s dual Gr.1 winner Waldgeist (Galileo), who, although he has not run over 1m2f in a while, was a very good fourth behind Enable in last year’s Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

GERMANY

SHALONA FLIES FOR LISTED SUCCESSShalona overcame her relative inexperience to land the Listed Henkel-Stuepreis over 1600m at Dusseldorf yesterday, flying home at the death to land the spoils.

The Soldier Hollow three-year-old filly won her sole start at two at Krefeld in November, but was clearly match fit yesterday. She was settled in fifth as Diajaka (Kamsin) led the way, with the leader’s stablemate Sharoka (Rock Of Gibraltar) in second, and K Club (Kodiac) in third. In the home straight, the winner still had four ahead of her, but was pulled out to challenge up the centre of the track as K Club went for home. Shalona sprouted wings inside the final 200m to overhaul her rivals and win going away by a length and three quarters, with a length separating the runner-up Sharoka and the third-placed K Club.

Bred by Klaus Hofmann and trained by Henk Grewe for Stall Lucky Owner, Shalona is a half-sister to Sa Mola (Dabirsim), Listed-placed in Italy, and the hat-trick scorer Smentana (Mastercraftsman), out of the Gr.3-placed winner Salona (Lord Of England), a half-sister to the Listed-placed Santino (Rock Of Gibraltar).

MAIDEN GROUP WIN FOR VEGA’S SON ARCHEDEMUSThe progressive Archedemus made the step up to Group company at Hawkesbury yesterday in the Gr.3 Hawkesbury Cup over 1600m.

The five-year-old Australian-bred son of Lope De Vega, who was winning for the sixth time in nine starts, grabbed the lead after 300m and was then never headed. Held together in front, the gelding came off the rail in the home straight, was ridden 300m from home and scored by half a length. Second home was the Irish-bred Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas), who was giving the winner 6kg. He was three and a quarter lengths in front of Sixties Groove, an Irish-bred son of Sixties Icon.

Owned and bred by the Superhorse Syndicate, Archedemus did not make his proper racecourse debut until the end of January last year, where he failed to finish. Second on his reappearance in November, he then broke his maiden at Wyong later that month. That victory was the first of five straight wins. On his last start, when going off favourite for the Provincial Championship two weeks ago, he was only eighth, having encountered trouble in runnings.

A half-brother to the year younger Gr.3 Angst Stakes runner-up Mandylion (Nicconi), the pair are amongst four winners out of the Australian winner Carolyn’s Star (Peintre Celebre). The third dam is the Gr.1 South Australian Derby winner Mapperley Heights (Sir Tristram), a full-sister to the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks heroine Royal Heights.

and was also second on her seasonal reappearance in the Gr.2 Kinko Sho earlier this month.

The field is completed by Furore (Pierro), Dark Dream (All American) and Deirdre (Harbinger).

NATIONAL HUNT PREVIEWITALY

BATAILLE OUT TO LAND THIRD GRAN CORSA SIEPIThe Gr.1 Gran Corsa Siepi di Milano, worth a total of €60,000, headlines the action at Milan this afternoon and the 4000m hurdle test has drawn a field of six. The race has traditionally been staged in autumn, but this year the there is to be no jumps racing in the autumn at San Siro, so the event has been moved to earlier in the year.

Josef Vana is a regular successful raider in Italy and is dual-handed, including with Champ De Bataille, winner of the past two renewals, when they were staged in November. The son of Dream Well was only ninth in a Listed at Auteuil on his comeback earlier this month. The second Vana raider is Morning Star (Silvano), runner-up in February’s Gr.1 Corsa Siepi Nazionale at Pisa and was second in a conditions event at Milan over 3600m on 7th April.

Paolo Favero is also dual handed. Former Irish-trained Mezajy (Makfi), third in this event last November and third at Pisa in February, has won twice in Italy, including a conditions hurdle from Morning Star, which he won by two and a half lengths in receipt of one and a half kilos. Third home was the re-opposing Live Your Life (Turati), a Gr.1 scorer at Merano in September 2017. The fourth, a distance behind Live Your Life is the Polish runner and sole mare Circle Centuria (Ecosse).

The second Favero runner and sixth contender, American History (High Chaparral), has made seven starts, all from 6th January onwards, since making the move from Britain to Italy. He has won twice, one of those coming in selling company.

HONG KONG

BEAUTY GENERATION BIDS FOR BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS MILE WINSBeauty Generation (Road To Rock) bids for back-to-back Gr.1 Champions Mile victories today. He has won his last eight starts, including three top-level wins over course and distance. Last time out in the Gr.2 Chairman’s Trophy, he readily accounted for Singapore Sling (Philantropist), Conte (Starcraft), Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) and Rise High (Myboycharlie), who were fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Completing the field is the Gr.3 January Cup Handicap winner Simply Brilliant (Frankel) and the handicap winner and Gr.3-placed Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor).

SANTA ANA LANE MAKES THE TRIP TO SHA TIN FOR CHAIRMANS SPRINTAnthony Freedman will saddle this month Gr.1 T J Smith Stakes winner Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) in the Gr.1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize.

He will face nine rivals, including the Richard Gibson-trained Rattan (Savabeel), who had been running all winter but was dropping down to 6f for the first time since his debut in 2017 when winning the Gr.2 Speint Cup earlier this month. He beat John Size’s Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook), who had won the Gr.1 Centenary Sprint Cup in January, while Pingwu Spark (Mastercraftsman) and Winner’s Way (Starcraft) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Little Giant (Swiss Ace) had won a couple of 6f handicaps, but was last seen finishing last in the Gr.1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup over 7f and had previously been beaten three and a quarter lengths by Beat The Clock in the Gr.1 Centenary Sprint Cup.

The field is completed by January’s Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap winner Enzo’s Lad (Testa Rossa), as well as Viddora (I Am Invincible Spirit), who was six lengths behind Blue Point in the Gr.1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan last month, and Nac Venus (Daiwa Major), a Gr.3 scorer last year.

EXULTANT FACES STRONG QEII CUP FIELDExultant (Teofilo) has been in fine fettle recently and claimed the Gr.1 Hong Kong Gold Cup in February on his most recent start. He beat a number of today’s rivals in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, that day, including the Archipenko full-brothers Glorious Forever and Time Warp, who were fifth and eleventh respectively. They are both Gr.1 winners, but have been well held by Exultant in recent times.

Another beaten rival was Pakistan Star (Shamardal), who was tenth. He lost his way recently, but made a promising debut for the Paul O’Sullivan stable when third in the Gr.2 Chairman’s Trophy behind Beauty Generation.

A pair of Siu Pak Kwan-owned horses also re-oppose today. Dinozzo (Lilbourne Lad), from the John Size stable, was four and a half lengths adrift of Exultant in third and Eagle Way (More Than Ready), from John Moore’s yard, was five and a half lengths behind the winner in sixth.

Another interesting runner is Eminent (Frankel), who was unlucky in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but has since been second in the Gr.1 Ranvet Stakes. Lys Gracieux (Heart’s Cry) was a neck second to Exultant in the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase last term

Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega), pictured winning the Gr.1 T J Smith Stakes earlier this month.

Training on Friday witnessed a top price of $1.3m, the highest price paid over the course of the four-day sale. Trade at the Florida venue ended with a record aggregate of $73,287,000, an increase of seven per cent on last year’s record of $68,541,500.

Last year’s sale witnessed just one seven-figure lot, but a third was achieved this year when Team Casse paid $1.3m for a son of Into Mischief from de Meric Sales. Offered as Lot 1165, the colt, who had breezed two furlongs in :21 flat, is a half-brother to a two-time winner by Warrior’s Reward, out of the unraced Dixie Song. The daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus is a half-sister to the nine-time Stakes winner By The Light (Malibu Moon), who has produced the dual Gr.1 winner By The Moon. The Brandywine Farm-bred bay was picked up by de Meric for $300,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale last August.

Earlier in the session, Lot 1066 had narrowly missed out on being another seven-figure lot when selling to Steven W Young for $975,000. The son of Candy Ride, who had breezed a furlong in :10sec, was offered by Wavertree Stables and bred by Whitehall Lane Farm.

A half-brother to a winner by Arch, the bay is out of the three-time Stakes scorer Citizen Advocate, a Proud Citizen half-sister to the winning dam of the 2017 Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Caledonia Road (Quality Road), whose biggest triumph came in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’.

The day’s highest-priced filly was Lot 1111, a daughter of Medaglia D’Oro who brought a winning bid of $825,000 from Stonestreet Stables. She was a very profitable pinhook, having been picked up for $172,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale by Al Pike. She was consigned through Sequel Bloodstock on Friday and is a half-sister to the Listed winner and Gr.1 Santa Anita Oaks third Bajan (Speightstown), out of the Stakes-placed Critikal Reason (Aptitude). She is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Kentucky Oaks heroine Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid), dam of the champion and four-time Gr.1 winner Forever Unbridled and the Gr.1 Ballerina Stakes winner Unbridled Forever, both by Unbridled’s Song. The second dam is the dual Argentine Gr.2 winner Critikola (Tough Critic).

The following lot in the ring was a daughter of Cairo Prince (Lot 1112), who was bought from Eddie Woods by Gold Square LLC. Bought by Marc Tacher for $182,000 at Keeneland last September, the half-sister to the Stakes winner Perfect Wife (Majesticperfection), out of Crozat, a Street Sense half-sister to the Gr.3 Hollywood Turf Express Handicap scorer Jungle Prince,

PAUL NICHOLLS CROWNED CHAMPION NATIONAL HUNT TRAINERPaul Nicholls was crowned Champion National Hunt Trainer for the 11th time in his 28 years of training at Sandown’s bet365 Jump Finale yesterday.

He achieved a total of 3,000 wins in his career in February with Capitaine at Taunton, one of the Somerset-based trainer’s local tracks earlier in the season.

A short time ago, Nicholls reached another major landmark with a victory with Dr Sanderson in a novice hurdle at Ludlow, providing him with his 3,000th winner under both codes in Britain.

Earlier this month, he became only the third National Hunt trainer in history to saddle a total of 3,000 winners over jumps in the UK with Kupatana’s win in the Listed EBF/TBA Mares’ Novice Handicap Chase Final at Cheltenham.

Commenting on his triumphant season, Nicholls said: “Reaching the 3,000 National Hunt wins and securing our 11th Champion National Hunt Trainer Title is a great achievement for the whole team. I have great owners and very good staff, who can be relied upon to get the job done. Delegating has always been an important aspect of the way we all go about the business at home and it’s important in our success.”
