A Quiet Apostacy Just recently, we completed the October Count for the parish. All parishes must count attendance at every Mass for four Sundays in October, and turn them in to the Archdiocese. In general, Sunday Mass attendance was the same as the year before, except for the 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM Spanish masses. Attendance has dropped at both of these Masses over the last few years, and it is not that families have stopped coming to Resurrection Parish; they continue to come. And it is not that parishioners are going somewhere else, they’re not. It is simply that an entire generation of individuals have decided that Church is not important to them. About whom am I talking ? Specifically, who has walked away? Let me explain this situation, which is so sad that I want to cry! I see it happen before my eyes. Remember, I am looking out at all of you for most of the Mass. Our families that come regularly to the 9:30 am and 12:30 pm masses are in most cases intact, meaning Mom and Dad are still together. Their kids are all healthy and some or most are now out of school and working. But sadly, it’s as if all these twenty-somethings got an email saying; “BTW, the Third commandment no longer applies to you. There is no need to go to church; you are special and have received a get-into-heaven free card. God can’t wait to see you!” I saw many of these young adults last Easter. From my experience as pastor, I am sure I’ll see many of those faces again at Christmas, but what gives? I know I will be happy to see them, as many are my former students, but I know that I will quickly find myself distressed and disappointed when I hear them shamelessly talking about the person they’re living with, or worse! And they justreceived Holy Communion! To them, Communion is either “just something you do at Mass”, or they have lost their sense of sin. To receive the living God so casually, with no sense of the enormity or wonder of the experience, is heart-breaking. I took over the job of DRE (Director of Religious Education) myself here at Resurrection some years ago, and have been one of the regular catechists for the last TEN YEARS and counting. I know that as a teacher I have always talked a lot about the Ten Commandments and very specifically about the Third Commandment. What I can’t get is why this particular group of young people just don’t think any of this “Church stuff” applies to them. We are made for God, to live with Him forever. But they live only for today, and thus probably will not live with Him forever. I just don’t get it! And why do they have no shame? What will it take to stir their hearts, reboot their consciences, and restore them to right relationship with God? Page 6

Una Apostasía Silencia Recientemente, completamos la cuenta de octubre para la parroquia. Todas las parroquias deben contar la asistencia a cada Misa durante cuatro domingos de octubre y entregarlas a la Arquidiócesis. En general, la asistencia a la misa dominical fue la misma que el año anterior, excepto las misas en español de las 9:30 a.m. y las 12:30 p.m. La asistencia ha disminuido en ambas Misas en los últimos años, y no es que las familias hayan dejado de asistir a la Parroquia Resurrección; ellos continúan asistiendo Y no es que los feligreses se vayan a otro lado, no lo están. It is devastating for me, writing this note, knowing that those young people, about whose souls I am so concerned, will not come across this article. They are not here to pick up a bulletin and read it. So you, Faithful Remnant, I need your help. We have some wonderful faith-filled young adults in this parish. I need your help, too. For every one of you that is here, there are probably thirty more that should be but are not. If you have children or friends who have walked away from the faith, pick up an extra copy of the bulletin, get them to read it. The regular practice of the faith makes a difference. So many young adults err in presuming they have a relationship with Christ even though they do not spend any significant amount of time with Him. No regular prayers are said. No Mass is attended. No charity or support is offered. Baptismal promises? “What did I promise?” Gifts of the Holy Spirit? “My parents made me get them. Nothing I need there.” Our Lord says that when individuals like this coming knocking on heaven’s door upon their death, he will say “Do I know you?”. We do not want our children or our friends to hear those words. So please be missionary disciples in your own family and spread the word. Jesus offers us all salvation, but it is not a freebie! We choose salvation for ourselves by how we live our lives. We have young people out there drifting away and if they go too far they will not be part of the heavenly Kingdom. We must warn them because we love them. Parents, you have to talk to them heart to heart. All parents want to pass on good things to their children, and at the top of the list should be the right and regular practice of the faith. Thanksgiving is coming and most families will gather together. Take that opportunity to call them back. Perhaps get everyone together and come to Mass. And, after dinner, you can bring out the Bible and read one the passages listed in the box to start a family discussion. You have nothing to lose, and your children’s salvation to gain. And what could be more important than that?

Si tiene hijos o amigos que se han alejado de la fe, tome una copia adicional del boletín y haga que lo lean. La práctica regular de la fe hace la diferencia.
