A story we are proud to tell

This is the second edition of the DEE magazine in which pages designed by Nicolas Bourquin, illustrations by Stina Fisch and Mik Muhlen, and photo contributions by Jessica Theis, Jan Hanrion & Antonello Di Pinto can be appreciated; the cover photo was created by Julien Becker. On the menu there is a retrospective look at Design Friends’ season 4, as well as a presentation of the coming programme. What can we remember from last season?

The eclecticism illustrated by conferences on designer products, designer food, graphic design, art & design and automobile design, which meant Design Friends was able to invite big names in international design to Luxembourg. The association was also approached by P&T Luxembourg to create a stamp. Furthermore, it conducted quite substantial and enrich-ing work with a number of secondary schools in the Grand Duchy, which concluded with the organisation of a postcard competition.

In 2013-2014, Design Friends has programmed five conferences, still keep-ing a wish for the eclecticism that is so dear to the association. It kicks off with the a talk by olfactory designer Sissel Tolaas. This will be followed, in November 2013, by products by French designer, Christophe Pillet. In 2014, it will be the turn of graphic and editorial designer Mirko Borsche, followed by Klaus-Peter Siemssen, a specialist in urban light design. Bruce Duckworth, a figure recognised in packaging design, will discuss this subject at the end of the season. Over the entire year, special events will be organised by the association, such as, for example, film projections. You will find information and the complete calendar on our Internet site. Silvano Vidale, the very first President of Design Friends, is now entrusting “his” D to fellow founding member Nadine Clemens. The entire committee would like to thank Silvano for contributing wonderful years full of passion, enthusiasm and leadership.

The success and survival of an association like Design Friends is greatly due to the pas-sionate and voluntary commitment of its or-ganising committee. Quite apart from the stimulating contact that we have with the guest designers, it is important to highlight that an enormous amount of administra-tive and organisational management for the smooth running of events is part of each committee member’s daily work.

From its very beginnings, the Design Friends committee was made up of designers and “non-designers”, thus opening up the per-spective to other fields which are both tradi-tional and unexpected in design. By incorpo-

rating a panel with different competences, the association ensured it could cover a number of activities, such as the supervision of print-outs, event organisation, accounting, spon-soring, drafting and uploading to the Inter-net site and newsletters, and much more.

One year after the creation of Design Friends, the founding committee, made up by Silvano Vidale, Arnaud Mouriamé, Nadine Clemens and Mike Koedinger, hads grown by 6 peo-ple to strengthen the team: Heike Fries, who held the post of treasurer for 3 years, Anabel Witry (secretary since 2012), Stéphanie Rol-lin, Serge Ecker (2010-2011), Pit Kuffer and Guido Kröger.

During the last general assembly, on 5 July 2013, there was, among other things, a reor-ganisation of the Design Friends committee. This is when Silvano Vidale left his post as president after 4 years of activity. This post has been entrusted to Nadine Clemens, for-mer vice-president, whose former tasks will now go to Mike Koedinger. Anabel Witry re-mains the association secretary and Guido Kröger becomes treasurer.

Today, the board is supported by a close committee of counselors, made up of Heike Fries, Stéphanie Rollin and Silvano Vidale, to whom certain tasks, which are vital to the life of the association, such as the organisa-

tion of conferences, are entrusted. It is op-portune to thank the counselors, who con-tinue to play a fundamental role in the life of the association. Mik Muhlen has joined Design Friends as a graphic designer to as-sure the graphical follow-up and printing process.

With this remodelled committee, a new, freshly published edition of the DEE maga-zine, as well as an appetizing and very varied new season – offering olfactory design, prod-uct design, graphic design, urban light de-sign and packaging design – the non-profit-making association Design Friends launches its 5th season, in October 2013.

The piece of design I like...In our everyday life we are surrounded by many design objects. They prove to be practical, aesthetical or useful. Some have a – personal – history, others are brand new. What’s YOUR favourite? Design Friends asked this question to its members.

‘Ok, as a pure self-promotion I will have to chose the armchair ElSan-toLibre, the first piece I designed for the brand ‘Dante Goods and Bads’ co-founded with my wife Aylin Langreuter in 2012. This arm-chair is a quite unique set up of the classic cantilever typology. The unsuspecting comfort of this arm-chair is given by bending a sturdy leather shed into shape, fixed on its metal base and resulting in a ham-mock like configuration. The new version is completed with an otto-man in kilim and fur finishes.

The piece of design I like for the moment is the Droog Tattoo.Droog was commissioned by Rijks Studio to use a piece from the Rijks- museum collection to cre-ate a new, contemporary design. Droog created a tattoo inspired by a flower painting from the collection called ‘Still life with flowers and glass vase’ by Ja Davidszn de Heem from the 17th century. I’ve always admired tattoos on people and catch myself staring at them ever and again! I could imagine wearing this one for a night or two ...

I like the Lancia Stratos! The shape, the proportions are real Italian tailoring. The car is an icon of innovation of the 70’s industry. And, it is small and sexy!

The PH 5, designed by Poul Henningsen in 1926. It just incorporates good design on so many levels and inspires me in my lamp designs. A balance of direct, indirected and reflected light exactly where it is needed, at a perfect intensity, with no glare, lighting itself, rendering its simple yet iconic forms. It is refined, pure, unobtrusive and elegant yet shows character, honesty and soul and I guess that’s what makes this piece time-less, yet so modern ... and all these Scandinavians with the PH5 above their kitchen table can’t be wrong.

The Faceture design by Phil Cut-tance. A great example of a design object on the borderline of indus-try and crafts – a combination that represents a solution to many global problems. Its beauty emerges from the manufacturing process, the shape follows its function. Everything about this design makes sense to me!

My office-chair Aeron designed by Herman Miller. It makes every-day-life more comfortable. It fits different moods as well as locations and users. Last but not least it’s a product which comes with a nice manual …

A very intelligent and simple design that makes it almost im-possible to spill the oil is the setrillera Marquina. For those who use oil for cooking daily, it’s very unpleasant to grab a splipery oil bottle covered with oil, or anything covered with oil. When you use this oil bottle, you see (feel) the difference. It’s one of those designs that make your life easier. Design by Rafael Marquina.

The design object that I choose: Poporo from Quimaya aborigins in Colombia (around 300 BC) from the Gold museum collection in Bogotá. Its primary use was as a ceremonial device in religious ceremonies. The ancient cultures around the world give us a proof that design and design objects are not a trend matter but more a useful tool that exists since thousands of years; there is noth-ing new under the sun ...

SumoGgSara and Paul’s Coffee maker is the design I like at the moment. Besides the coffee makers’ iconic shape, the simple functional prin-ciple of the machine is quite easy to understand; and that’s hard to find in many of today’s objects. After using it for some time, it became a personalised item that travelled the world with its own-ers and provided a cheerful mug of coffee every morning. This coffee maker proudly wears its signs of use, it became a part of the family.

My favourite design piece for the moment is the Vieux Luxembourg collection of Villeroy & Boch. The reason is the fact that this is a Luxembourg design classic and we should develop more “Made & Designed in Luxembourg” products. This put Luxembourg on the world map and will increase business for the Luxembourg creative industries.

My favourites are the Chuck Tay-lor’s All Stars. They have been on my feet for 20 years now: different pairs, different colours, different sizes, one design.

My favourite piece of design is the Smartstreets-cyclepark, a quick-to-install bike parking system. It should encourage local authorities to increase official bike parking systems that are nice and easy to use! It was designed by Andrew Farish and Chris Garcin. It won a Red Dot Design Award in 2012.

Born in 1969, British industrial designer Sam Hecht studied at the Royal College of Art and, after working briefly for the architect David Chipperfield, travelled in the US and Japan before returning to London as head of design at IDEO. In 2002 he established the design studio Industrial Facility with his partner Kim Colin. Both designers are convinced of “the importance of design as a means of simplifying our lives in an inspirational way”.

After organising a confer-ence about sound design I wanted to stimulate peo-ple interested in another sense: Taste. As food cul-ture is quite well developed in Luxembourg, food design seemed to me an interest-ing theme. For sure I expect-ed a strong visual aspect (“Das Auge isst mit”) when I was looking for food desig-ners, but I was intrigued by Sonja and Martin’s rather multi-sensorial approach. Analysing visual elements (forms, colours), taste, smell, the haptics of food, and just as you would for any other design object, taking a func-tional, social and cultural point of view, that made it even more appetising!Heike Fries

According to the Austrian designers, “People should talk about food as an aspect of culture, as the most important good, as business, as a design product of daily life.” They founded the interdisciplinary design studio honey & bunny productions, curated the exhibition “Food Design” for Museums-quartier Vienna and performed as eat designers in Milan, Amsterdam and many other places.

Lernert & Sander are two Dutch artists and friends who decided that working alone was getting boring and started collaborating on art related projects. Since their first video “Chocolate Bunny” they’ve been working on commercials, leaders, art movies, docu-mentaries and installations. Their aim is to make simple and communicative works that takes little note of the existing border between contemporary art and commercial projects. Their highly aesthetic, humorous and dedicated works are often challenging the media and its viewer, in a simple but very effective way.

In my daily job I deal with contemporary art and I’m most interested in aesthet-ics, and how ideas can be communicated through images. What struck me first in Lernert Engelbert and Sander Plug’s work was the highly visual aspect of their designs. They create beau-tifully designed objects that easily weave through the fields of art, design and business. Their designs are very attractive, enormously efficient and all in all driven by a subtle sense of humour. Nadine Clemens

Murat Günak started his career at Ford before moving to Mercedes where he de-signed the first C-Class and SLK. In 1994 he became head of design at Peugeot where he worked on the 206 CC, 307 and 607; as head designer of Volkswagen he designed models such as the Passat CC.Then a groundbreaking new car steered his career in a completely new direction: with the MIA-electric – a thoroughly green car – Murat Günak created a pioneering concept in the urban electric car market.MIA is a beautiful car, ultracompact, silent, economical and with zero-emissions con-ceived to simplify urban driving.

Murat Günak

As cars are probably the most common popular design ob-jects it was natural to integrate this theme into our program as an organisation which ad-dresses to the general public. But we did not want to have a conference about technical features or car brands. When I read an article about Murat Günak, who had spent many years working for different tradi-tional brands and then, some time ago, moved into electric mobility, which needs a different design approach, I felt that he would be a perfect fit for our philosophy.

A short interview with Emile Espen, head of Office des Timbres of Entreprise des Postes & Télécommunications, Luxembourg.

Emile Espen, you already teamed up twice with Design Friends on a stamp design contest. How did it all start? It is part of my job to look for artists that could design postal stamps. Two years ago, I was struck by a series of postcards edited by Design Friends, and designed by pro-fessional graphic designers and illustrators. That’s why I contacted the association. I admire their work and ambition. Design has many facets and touches countless areas of creation, and Design Friends has the ability to accurately communicate these ideas.

In 2013, the Office des Timbres (Post Lux-embourg) got in touch with Design Friends for a collaboration on the new edition of their postage stamps series based on the typography theme “L”.

Together they chose 9 graphic designers from the Design Friends members’ list and invited them to participate in this project. Graphic designers Laurent Daubach, Claudia Euster-gerling, Nicole Goetz, Joanna Grodecki, Elisa Kern, Arnaud Mouriamé, Mik Muhlen, Sebastian Reiter and Sumo each submitted 2 projects for the “L” postage stamp.

The jury awarded 4 winning stamps ...

Is there a tradition in Luxembourg for stamp design contests? No, we don’t usually organise stamp design contests. We simply ask the artists personally if they’d like to work with us. The “L”-stamp competition happened to be the first of that kind. It was a lot of fun working with DF on this project and the results are fantastic! Again, we’d love to continue this collaboration.

Do the “L”-stamps have a collector’s value? These stamps will be printed millions of times. I can’t say they’ll be something of a rarity. But I really believe that these stamps will make people happy who’ll notice them on a letter.

Playful D Competition

In 2013, one of Design Friends’ main objectives was to gather a higher percentage of student members (aged 15 to 19) than the years before. In order to stimulate the teens’ interest in Design Friends, we gave them the opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity, and launched the “Playful D Competition” in 4 high schools across the country. The aim of the competition was to design a postcard on the theme of the letter “D”. The winning postcards would then be distributed by Boomerang in trendy places in Luxembourg-City, bars, restaurants, cinemas ... which all in all proved to be a particular incentive for the students to take part in the project.

As preparation for the contest, the project’s initiator Silvano Vidale spent many days organising a “high school tour”, as he likes to call it. He personally introduced Design Friends in every school, thus building strong relationships with their students and teachers. What began as a participatory project soon grew into a facilitator for talented student graphic designers. They learned to express themselves through a given theme, while also learning first-hand from professionals how to deal with deadlines and pre-print demands. Silvano Vidale coached the students throughout the many stages of the project.

To sum up, 28 students from Lycée Aline Mayrisch, Lycée Classique Echternach, Lycée Classique Diekirch and Lycée technique des Arts & Métiers participated in the project. Among the 28 participants, we counted 27 girls and 1 boy! Congratulations to all entrants and thank you for sharing your talent with us.

A jury chose a series of 6 winning postcards to be distributed in Luxembourg by Boomerang in July 2013.

All entries were judged by a jury composed of Design Friends committee members, Boomerang, artists and teachers.

Season 4 in numbers Thanks Our special thanks go to graphic designer Nicolas Bourquin who accepted our invitation to create an infographic résumé of our last season.

In 2013, Design Friends invited Nicolas Bourquin for a lecture. He presented his work in the field of info-graphics, giving an insight into the design process from the initial stages to the final printed or animated result and showed projects commissioned by many clients. Here are some examples of his projects.

DADI Magazine La Chaise: d’une forme à l’autre (May 2013)

From Rietveld to Grcic and from Perriand to Panton: a short his-tory of chair in the 20th century. This infographic displays some of the most famous designs of the last century, showing and comparing their shapes, origins, materials, innovations in a full spread timeline.

Tramelan Energies (June 2013)

To produce and consume clean yet affordable energy: these are the main goals of the City of Tramelan, which are explained, visualized and compared in this newspaper distributed for free to each household of the municipality.

Reflex MagazineTrack & Field: The Best Results (June 2012)

Experts predict that the human body will reach its physiologi-cal limits by 2068. Even before then, sports fans will have fewer opportunities to cheer. Technical innovations, rule changes and the professionalization of sports brought new records in the 20th century. How much longer can athletes keep improving?

Tramelan

WHAT ARE YOU DOING???

Think like a publisher? Then start being one. We can help you create your magazine, your book, your video, your newsletter, your website or your mobile application. We’ll help you find the medium and the message.

Corporate communication is not easy. And holding hands above your head doesn’t help. Good content does: providing readers with guidance and assistance, inspiration and entertaining stories. Good content is the only way to make consumers love you.

Invest in Content Marketing.
