Executive Summary1. There are multiple types of intelligence2. There are multiple stages of adult
development3. Higher stages of adult development enable
us to deal with complexity, ambiguity4. You need emotional and spiritual intelligence
to get to higher stages of development5. These higher stages are related to the
Conscious Capitalism model of Conscious Leadership

Please note…• This is just ONE approach• Consider it a hypothesis – that SQ is a way
we can more safely bring Spirituality into the workplace and into leadership conversations
• And…also useful in centers of faith• Not intended to homogenize or lose the
distinctiveness of each faith• We do not prescribe that you must think all
21 skills are important or that you must believe anything we say or present

Why Spiritual Intelligence?• Religion triggers fear / defense• A safe language of skills – and• Skills described need to be meaty enough
to communicate the power of spirituality• An assessment could be soundly created,
validated, researched and improved upon• Faith-friendly, faith-neutral and secular-
friendly

Why I Do This…• These skills have worked for me and
my clients• These are sound business skills• These are life skills as well• Previous to this assessment it was
very hard to describe, measure and teach Spiritual Intelligence

• Lines of development or lines of INTELLIGENCE– Cognitive, moral, interpersonal, spiritual….
• States of consciousness – Waking, dreaming, deep sleep, transcendent
• 4 Quadrants of realms of experience• Types of personalities
– Myers Briggs, Enneagram, etc.

Multiple Intelligences• Howard Gardner opened the door to discussion
of “multiple intelligences” with his book Frames of Mind in 1983. He listed seven different types of intelligences in that book:– Linguistic – Logical-mathematical– Musical– Bodily-kinesthetic – Spatial – Interpersonal– Intrapersonal

• We want “Love.” But what is Love?
Compassion Wisdom
A Bird with two wings…
So spiritual intelligence is acting with Love…

• Higher Power / Higher Self
is about Unity, Connection, Service, abundance, Long-term thinking, Win/Win/Win solutions
• Egois about Separation,
isolation, self-protection, scarcity, short- term thinking, win/lose or “quid pro quo”

Synonyms for Higher Power• Quantum field• The Ground of all Being• God, Allah, Brahman, Yhwh, Lord, Spirit, Jesus,
Holy Spirit• The Dao/Tao• The Source, Pure Essence• I Am That I Am -- All That Is – What Is• Ein Sof• The Vacuum State of Infinite Potential• The indefinable Mystery• The Universe• Pure Consciousness or Pure Love• Gaia, Creator

Synonyms for Higher Self• Soul, Spirit• Christ Consciousness• Buddha nature• Atman• Essential Self• Authentic or True Self• The Dao/Tao within

Key Language: Ego self
• Ego* is the part of us that is – Fearful, angry, separated from
others– Likes drama, victim roles, aggressor
roles• Synonyms: Personality self, selfish
side, lower self, separated self, earthly self, etc. In Islam – the nafs*not Freud’s definition – Ego as used in spiritual literature
Shift from Ego to Higher Self
• Ego as described in spiritual literature– Self-interest is narrow, focused on “me” and “my
goals” (low empathy, low wisdom)– Tendency to drama, negative thinking– Equals earlier stages of development and less
healthy expressions of the stages
• Higher Self– Expanded sense of who I am, sees
interconnections, sees systems, sees context– Wiser, calmer, transformational decisions

Quad 1 Skill 5: Awareness of Ego self / Higher Self
1 I have a basic understanding of that an ego self exists and that how it reacts to things is a result of my personal experiences since birth, including the influence of my family and my culture.
2 I can observe my own Ego in operation. I understand there is a difference between the desires of my Ego and of my Higher Self.
3 I can recognize the situations and types of people that trigger my Ego self to want to take charge. I recognize the signals my body gives me when my Ego has been triggered.
4 I can consistently hear the voice of my Higher Self. This may be a “felt sense” in the body, or an auditory or visual experience, or a combination. I may not hear it often, but I know it when I do. I am learning to listen to it. I understand how my thoughts and beliefs are creating the anger or fear I feel.
5 The voice of my Higher Self is now the principal voice I hear. Ego is now in joyful service to Spirit. I no longer feel a “tug of war” between these two parts of my self.

Complexity of Reasoning1
• How many items do you take into account and how do you assemble them into a position?
• What do you consider as evidence?• Do you assess long-term effects?• What steps do you follow when evaluating?• What data do you use to support your stance? • How do you deal with ambiguity?

My Conclusions• Higher STAGES are crucial to respond to
the Life Conditions we face in the world• Higher SQ is very highly correlated with
Higher STAGES• We need PQ, IQ, EQ and SQ to move to
Higher STAGES• SQ is a crucial skill set for world leaders
and evolved voters and citizens to develop

Goal: Spirit Drives, Ego “navigates”
Ego Higher Self
Think of your Ego as an important part of the whole. It can sometimes have good advice but shouldn’t be “behind the wheel”!
