Congressman, national commanderextend congratulations to squadron

Among the expressions of congratulations received by Deer Valley Composite Squad-ron 302 on its 50th anniversary are letters received from U.S. Rep. John Shadegg of Ari-zona and Maj. Gen. Antonio Pineda, national commander of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol.Following are excerpted from their messages:

It is a pleasure to join the community in offering my congratulations for the decades of committed, unwavering service provided by thesquadron. The well-deserved awards and recognition the squadronhas received over the years are a true testament to your success at such a vital mission.

Best wishes for many more years of dedicated service to our commu-nity, state and nation.

    John ShadeggCongressman

Arizona 3 rd DistrictU.S. House of Representatives

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ It gives me great pleasure to send my congratulations to you all

for a job well done. Not only has your squadron reached a major milestone in unit history by remaining actively chartered for 50

years, you are one of only 22 active units nationwide that has morethan 100 members and are the largest in the Arizona Wing.

By having received the National Squadron of Distinction twiceand also the National Squadron of Merit, your remarkable achieve-ments are due to the leadership and commitment of the current and

past members of your squadron. Without each and every member committing themselves to the program, the unit as well as Civil Air Patrol cannot continue to provide support to local communities,

prepare young people to become responsible citizens and support this great nation through disaster relief, emergency services and homeland-security opera-

tions. We can only imagine what the next 50 years will bring, but Im sure the Deer Valley Squad-ron will continue to flourish and remain a major part of the success of this organization. I con-sider it an honor to be your commander and salute you all for a job well done.

Highway safety Stopped vehicles such as these along Highway 87 are monitored by aircrews from Deer Valley Composite Squadron 302 and other Arizona Wing squadrons to ensure traveler safety as part of missions being flown twice weekly for the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT flights emphasize traveler safety, provide opportunities to enhance proficiency

Aircrews and radio operators from DeerValley Composite Squadron 302 as well asselected other U.S. Civil Air Patrol squad-rons within the Arizona Wing are support-ing the Arizona Department of Transpor-tations (ADOTs) summer program tomonitor weekend traffic conditions andsafety concerns along Interstate 17 andState Route 87 (Beeline Highway), two of the major travel arteries into and out of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Responsible primarily for monitoring theBeeline Highway from Shea Boulevard to apoint just south of Payson, the squadronsaircrews have been flying at least one sortieeach Friday and Sunday afternoon (and onmajor holidays such as Memorial Day, Inde-pendence Day and Labor Day) during thesummer months.

The crews observe and report issues suchas accidents, stranded vehicles, roadway de-

bris, lane restrictions and other situations thatcould raise safety concerns for travelers seek-ing weekend respites in Arizonas cooler highcountry and then returning on Sunday to theValley.

Specialized laptop computers provided byADOT are equipped with global positioningsystem (GPS) software that allows aircrews toidentify the position of potential hazards ac-cording to the nearest milepost number on themonitored highway. Those concerns then arerelayed to ADOT by base personnel for fol-low-up attention.

ADOT is covering the fuel costs for eachflight. The opportunity for increased flights isenabling the personnel of several ArizonaWing squadrons to advance their scanner andobserver training/certifications, enhance over-all training and operations proficiency, andadd needed flight hours for aircraft.
