also funding

Already work in the research dept

Retiring soon, so not intending to change role

I am involved in research and lead on a few studies. I just have not seen much of nurse led (initiated) research. I believe it would give nurses more opportunities and recognition.

Able to maintain clinical role while carrying out research

Research that is relevant to my area of practice. The length of time it takes to get approval is long and can be arduous. I don't think nursing research is taken seriously

All of the first 7 above

always interested in research as years ago , pre-children, pre-nursing, I was a lab technician athe Wellcome Trust (now sadly swallowed jup by GSK) involved in research and it tremendously satisfying to give medication that I once did animal ADME studies on: aciclovir and lamotrigine. I also participated in clinical trials of what is now marketed as zyban and in the anti-coagulent properties of aspirin. I love hands-on nursing much more than I enjoyed research but I gained a huge amount of scientific knowledge and an ability to think clearly and logically which benefit my day to day work. I'm now working well into retirement age.

I'm retired but work part time.

More time within my job to contemplate it

There is little information if any on research within the trust I work for and I am not aware of any nurse researcherroles. If there is a need and I have a specific interest then yes I would be interested in this towards benefitting patient health outcomes

I am already involved in research

I already work in clinical research

Time and funding / protected hours to engage in it.

Am to close to retiring however always willing to participate in any way I can in others research.

I am already heavily involved in research as I am on long term secondment to a University Research Department

I do not wish to have a career change at present.

Not interested as retiring soon

supporting the link between new innovations and research. I have recently won national awards for my work on

hydration, but am struggling to find a way forward with research

Being able to do both clinical and research roles

what it involves ?who would it benefit ?how would it be funded ?

Trust very proactive with nursing research, support and development

need robust career progression and job security within clinical trials to attract the right people who can see that there is a future for them.

All of the above!

In my current role as company clinical advisor I would not have the time or resource to undertake clinical trial workand my company cover research from a global perspective. I have now reached retirement age, however I still am interested in the influence research has on the way we administer our care

Being earlier in my career - as coming up to retirement now.

I am currently just about to submit PHd

being named as co-author during publication

Increased learning and developmental opportunities within work environment.Time and financial constraints are impacting on research opportunities within employment

all of the above

It can be viewed poorly and as an easy option/step away from patient care. It needs to be seen as a specialism in its own right.

I wouldn't want a job that doesn't involve direct patient care

I believe the emphasis on research in nursing is more driven by an inferiority complex to the medical profession and the standard of nursing research is generally appalling and certainly would not satisfy the quality of research for publication in a physics journal - I am an RMN with a PhD in physics. Nursing needs to return to it's core business of vocation and caring. The sooner we get rid of basic degree nursing courses and return to a apprentice type course we will see improvements in basic nursing care and will find it easier to recruit nurses. Degree level nursing can be a part of career development, say after five years post registration. This would give the nurse time to develop as nurse and a person. Areas in nursing that I would love to see serious research devoted to are - the impact of documentation on the quality of nursing care and the time qualified staff actually take part in hands on nursing care versus documentationGlenn Mohamed RMN, BSC (hons), MSC, PhD (note I do not have a nursing degree)

Something I will be more interested in further into my career

More funding for nurse led research

Research being possible and supported within existing roles and responsibilities so that chosing to participate shoudn't mean changing jobs and losing or reducing one's livelihood. Also, evidence that findings wil then be suported and actively implemented into actual practice.I work in clinical research but would like to have the time and support to do nursing research as part of my "day job"

More Masters/PhD funding

Already working in research

Closer links with HEIs with research expertise who can support nursing research.

I am currently working as a research nurse and think providing permanent contracts would be a way to encourage more nurses into research as well as incorporating the research nurses into the clinical team for more visibitlty

Funding opportunities to perform my own research. Directorate/divisional support to undertake as part of role.

Currently working as a research nurse

Please be aware I am a Research Nurse

woulds like to have be able to answer more than one. I am clinical research nurse manager

Help and information with funding research

I am already working as Research Nurse

as a research nurse i am trying to get into the university to talk to student nurses at the start of their career so they can see how vital research is - staff can be difficult to engage with due to previous experience when training, lack of time and other competing issues

It is an avenue I've considered for my future career

All of the above first seven

More opportunities for nurses as PIs. At the moment the Research Nurse role has more to do with patient recruitment and meeting targets rather than ownership and understanding of the question that is trying to be answered. Nurses are rarely encouraged to conduct their own research, whereas Medics are constantly supported through their career development to conduct research or audit activities and present these at e.g. Grand round.needs to be valued by trust and multidisciplinary team - more engagement if research MD rather than entirely nurse-orientated and more likely to be supported and incorporated into longer term thinking

Reduction in clinical workload to able to support a research function.

Private sector bariatric surgery no funding. Offered for research

I already work as a lead research nurse

more opportunities to be involved in research that interests me or which I think would make a positive impact on patient careThe absence of a clear career pathway in clinical nursing research is a major deterrent to nurses. They are usually offered brief, time-limited secondments, with little expectation of development opportunities beyond this fixed period. Managers are often unsupportive and I have heard one manager state that they think nurses who request research opportunities are just trying to get out of clinical work. I believe that these sorts of negative attitudes really need to be challenged.

time constraints prevent much of what may be possible

I am certain that there are people involved in clinical research but we are never informed who they are and we never knew what type of reasearch they are in plus we are enver given any feedback about it.

More information.

See above comments on my pre nursing career.

As a student nurse the lack of visibility of research projects is disheartening.

There is a research team, within my organisation, what they do where they are based i have no idea.

I work in Nursing Homes dealing with Pailiative Care , many different opinions but little based on reserch

More encouragement from managers and time to get involved.

I would be more open to research in to falls/ rheumatology/ orthopaedic conditions musculoskeletal etc

It seems difficult to find opportunities that combine research with clinical work. Nurses don't have career structures to support this pathway, & seem to be either working purely in an academic role (& potentially lose clinical credibility), or are working clinically with little time or resources to support involvement in research. Research nursing is useful in terms of building up an understanding of how studies are run, but some research nurse roles lack clinical & patient contact; this erodes the nurses clinical skills and this reduces opportunities to develop research questions. More needs to be done to support clinical academic careers for nurses & it's contribution to patient care needs to be highlighted. Medical research steals the limelight leaving nursing in the wings. A real shame, as much talent is wasted. Clear career pathway to the top because as specialist nurse there is glass ceiling on us as one is not seen as suitable to hold a post beyond band 7. So I do not think a research nurse going beyond band 7.Get research nurses recognised as a specialist ie as with mental health nursing, paediatric nursing etc. Also better education and training for research nursing and for a recognised qualification like genetic counsellors can be accredited. This is something which has been employed in America with research nurses and I could see it being employed within the NHS. Having different levels of research experienced nurses not just all lumped into the one catagory of research nurse!

I'm currently doing a MSc in nursing and would like to complete research as part of it

Nurses frequently seen by Doctors as less iportant and knowledgeable - reseach is superficial and basic compared to medical researchnurses just don't get the time - wards are so short staffed there is no time for research, professional development or education of any kind.A stonger voice for nurses. The largest body of health professionals but the least willing to assert our professional role.

There should be protected time for all nurses to be involved in some aspect of clinica research

I would like more information/understanding about Clinical-Academic careers specifically.

opportunities and pathways to research being more visible. more information needed

I have found recruiting RMN's takes priority

Research institutions should give chance to experience nurses who are interested in research to go into it,provide trining and not always asking for experience in research as desirable. I have personally been interested for such a long time and have worked in acute setting for 12 years now and in different areas

TIME

long term lack of opportunity in my area or poorly advertised opportunities; time away from work is always difficult to commit to.Most of the time there is not enough staff to cover for nurses to conduct research .Also there is little encouragement from more senior staff to act on this as the pressure to meet their targets for patient through the department I work in .There is also not enough good quality time with front line staff for feed back, as most staff don't finish their duties on time and have less interest in staying on later still for feed back sessions to help with research/improvement of health care.A lot of staff these days are to tired and over worked to have the extra

energy to embark on the necessary extra commitment needed to complete the research

Management to create opportunities for nurses to have time for research. Private Sectors are concentrating on monetary gains only and less opportunities to develop nurses. as someone working in research as part of my broader academic role some of the questions are not relevant since they are cast in the context of working in the NHS-I thin opening up schemes to help nurses get started and give them start up support such as clinical research fellowships for one year could boost capacity in major ways. The same opportunities to engage in research should be made available to nurses, midwives and ahps as doctors. the different career and investment models are outdated and need to be aligned to capitalise on the move to graduatestatus for N&Ms, otherwise we will loose the talent base we are trying to nurture. Nothing to add. I would love to be involved with research and applied as a student. My employer does not supporttime off for me now so I would have no opportunity.

Increase career opportunities and funding

At the moment nurses don't feel appreciated in their role and instead of thinking of developing their career into a research path, most nurses feel like changing their careers from nursing to something different. We have nursed a patient who was part of a research project at Hull Royal Infirmary. This has been my only involvement in research. All posts advertised require knowledge of research methods, but getting that knowledge is often a barrier in the first place

no budget for the research project

as previously stated i am already heavily involved in research and am on long term secondment to a University research department. I have had to accept though that if my funding streams cease then I will either be redeployed within the Trust but expect to be told that there are no relevant posts for me. Resarch posts are a gamble as the majority are grant or charitable funded posts.

The chance of demonstrating patient and staff benefit and cost savings

clinical trials nursing need s to be recognised as a specialist role and not jack of all trades . get frustrated when constantly told as a trials nurse we should be "generic" ie should be able to pick up any protocol at any time and run with it for any patient. running RCT's takes experience of subject matter and research nursing but even the CLRN feel a number of duties could be delegated to generic roles, this concerns me for the future of research nursing.there is a massive difference between 'research nurses' and nurses undertaking research. The current situation of the NHS limits the amount of time clinical nurses can spend on research in their area to improve the patient experience and quality of life but sadly most clinical nurses are too busy and are not supported to do their own research. 'research nurses' are normally employed to work on someone else's project and rarely have the opportunity to undertake their own projects.the difference between the two roles is often confusing and to improve the volume and standard of nursing research this needs to become part of the job plan for senior clinical nurses rather than just nurse consultants withdedicated time set aside to complete projectsI am already very interested just wish there was time in the work day to carry out research- have lots of ideas, know where the gaps in knowledge are, know how to - have a PhD, just working flat out to comeplete the clinical work.more funding and better advertisement of who to go to. i am completing my dissertation which involves carrying out research, i have had to self fund this and im doing thisin my own time, in isolation.

Needs to be a top down supportive approach to encourage Nurses to look at research opportunities. There is limited opportunities or encouragement within organisations due to the current austerity and political changes within the NHS

If flexibility can be offered to those who are interested

the clinical research very important for all nurses even not do research but the nurse has to read the research

There needs to be a simsr set up to how medics can select research as an active part of their career. Nurses just qualify and then are left to go through the ranks as they see fit. However medics have ongoing training st each level and a research component us available to them. This is lacking in nursing. The opportunities for nurses to conduct research is restricted by funding. And for those that do receive funding it's a choice of research or clinical care. We need better balance and opportunities for nurses to be nurses and engage in research. That infrastructure isn't there at the minute. It should be a career option for every nurse.

Nurses need to have more education as students on clinical academic careers and the importance of EBP

most front line staff do not consider research to be part of their role, lack time to pursue it and also lack skills to conduct research. Nursing research is also less valued by clinical staff than medically led controlled trials both because of the topics which nurses consider are important and the methodologies (often qualitative) which are used. Therefore nursing research is both professionally and academically disadvantaged.

Biggar support and more information about it from trust and managers.

Value the input of Nursing Home Nurses

A clear understanding of what a long term role in research would demand from myself and if that research will acctualy benefit my collegues and the patient or will it become just another statistic. There is a lack of opportunities for nurses to undertake their own or nurse initiated research due to limited role models with both clinical and academic stature - we keep our medical academic colleagues in clinical roles, but we hide our nursing colleagues away in academic institutions away from the clinical coalface. The funding opportunities are limited to purely nursing/AHP roles compared to those for medically qualified clinicians, as are the training opportunities. The number of medical academics grossly outweighs the nursing profession limiting theopportunities to work with experienced leaders in their field. The NIHR is wonderful at providing opportunities (training/support/funding) for medically qualified clinicians but unfortunately their programs don't translate with the same quality for nurses/AHP's.

Respect from other professions

I am interested but pressure of work, lack of staff means late every shift . We have to do our learning in our own time so just too physically and mentally exhausted to undertake research as work life balance a struggle now. Research has already shown that numbers of nurses are important to the quality of patient care, but this makes me think that a clinical role not doing research is also valuable, and also makes me think that there is little point in doing research as s nurse since the people in power in the government and perhaps even doctors would not be interested as I feel that nurses are not highly respected enough or valued at all for their academic capability.

More knowledge and training

I intend to peruse an entirely researched based career after a few years of bein a nurse. This would either be through the NIHR or a PhD with a HE provider. As I will already have a masters, this is something I'm keen on doing as soon as possible post qualification This survey fails to account for the many nurses leading research in other settings. It also perpetuates a naive view that anyone can do research. Research training is needed to design and lead high quality research.

Those who are perhaps less academic historically feel that they would not be suitable for research

The questionnaire is acute focused, lots of staff work in the community where research would be just as valid.

I am currently working in the private sector, funding for research is not freely available in nursing.

That I could have a clinical post and do part time research.

Lack of availability of IT ie. SPSS in clinical areas

I am a clinical research nurse but am also working on my own research, the questions above don't allow me to reflect this, they are assuming we are all outside of researchI am currently doing a PhD looking into the role of the nurse practitioner and variation between areas and how this impacts outcomes and patient care.

If there was a more structured career pathway and Trusts were encouraging.

I need someone to show me how

My current role was suppose to enable me to do research which I was very keen to do. However due to situations beyond my control I was not able to carry out the research I had prepared ready to do.

Encourage Nurses and create more time for studies.

more encouragement and time

Think I'm too old to undertake a new challenge!!

should be introduced as an idea at university level to inform students of the opportunites available

this is not just hospital environment which can benefit the care home can also benefit

Research belongs to a closed shop. 'Researchers' form cliques and keep others distant.

I lack the confidence to get involved, and the time to find out more or initiate my own training.

arts inn health and arts in the wellbeing of staff

i would really engage with a reserch enviroment..i always got told off for asking why as a kid be nice to use that in my career

I have become aware of the NIHR pathway and hope to apply for funding to pursue a clinical academic career. We have a very supportive nursing professor and one clinician. Other members of the directorate are unsupportive due to the impact my absence will have on the clinical service.

More funding for nurses education, for example masters funding

I have an idea to develop a research project and am hoping to apply to hee next year and work are very supportivethe barrier holding me personally back is funding

not enough financial support, not enough staff
