The average Briton has seven major regrets, with taking up smoking topping the list, according to a survey. Researchers foundthat most people believe bad decisions made when they were young helped to shape their personality and influence thedecisions they have made afterwards.

A study of 2,000 adults revealed that starting to smoke was the most common regret, with 88 per cent of smokers wishing theyhad never taken it up. Putting on weight and not saving enough money were also high on the list of regrets with others wishingthey had got better exam results at school. Losing touch with friends, drinking too much, marrying too young and getting atattoo were also on the list.

According to the research 80 per cent of people say their regrets have influenced their decisions.

Adrian Everett, chief executive of e-cigarette brand E-Lites, said: 'Almost everyone has at least one thing they wish they hadn'tdone, especially from their younger years. While some regrets are small, some of the mistakes from your past can have a realeffect on your health, bank account and on your entire future. What's more, some regrettable decisions or actions can alsohave an effect on others around you. Luckily many things on the list are rectifiable and actions can be taken to ease the feelingof regret.'

Smokers say the effect it has had on their health and the cost of the habit are the biggest reasons they wish they had neverstarted. Others said concerns about how addictive it is, the effect it had on other people's health and possibly dying at ayounger age also made them regret taking up smoking.

Mr Everett said: 'I'm not surprised smoking tops the list. We speak to people every day who regret taking up smoking.'
