TOP FIVE A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ECONOMICSThe economics program is intended for students seeking a logical, ordered way of looking at various business and economic problems. By studying economics, you will learn principles, approaches, and conclusions that form the basis for developing sound policies in business, government, and personal life decisions. A bachelor’s degree in economics effectively prepares you for several types of careers, including management training programs in corporations and financial institutions; federal, state, and local government employment; or in a variety of occupations such as journalism, international relations, education, and the non-profit sector. It is also excellent preparation for graduate studies in economics, law, business, public administration, environmental studies, health care administration, labor relations, urban planning, diplomacy, and other fields.
REQUIREMENTSThe 120-hour Bachelor of Business Administration in economics requires general coursework, as well as 45 semester hours of Foundation Knowledge for Business. This foundation includes courses in accounting, economics, general business, finance, marketing, management, business communication, and management information systems. You may tailor your degree by taking the economics courses most closely aligned with your career goals. Options include Monetary Economics, Economics of Sports, Economic Development, International Economics, and more.
Minors: Students should select a minor that suits their interests and career goals. Common minors include English, political science, foreign languages, psychology, criminal justice, or sociology.
STUDY ABROADStudents have the opportunity to take upper-level economics courses while studying abroad in locations such as China, Japan, or Germany. The trips are led by COBA faculty and include special activities such as field trips to businesses and historic sites.
SCHOLARSHIPSStudents may apply for economics scholarships and non-degree specific scholarships by completing the Scholarships4Kats online application. Transfer scholarships are available for students who would like to continue their academic career at Sam Houston. SHSU provides a quality education at an affordable cost.
