FROM THE LADIES OF THE DSB
Our most heartfelt thanks go out to all who volunteered their time, efforts, and items for the annualpicnic. It was a great success and we could not have done it without the assistance of all ourmembers!
Also we hope all of those who joined the Ladies on their annual outing had a wonderful time. Wethank all of you who participated to make this a memorable event.
Our next meeting will be June 27th at 7:30pm and there will be no meeting in July as to break forthe summer. The following meeting will not be until August 29th at 7:30pm. Come on in and join ussometime, and we wish you all a wonderful summer!
FROM THE BAUERNSTUBE
From time to time, I'll be stopped and asked, what is my favorite warm weather beer to drink andfor the longest time, my answer would probably have been a Pilsner or wheat and both still hold aclose place to my liver. However, they say the way a man's heart is through his stomach and mineis much easier obtainable if you bring along a Kölsch. Yes, we have discussed Kölsch before but itdoes bear re-mentioning and there are so many good examples being produced lately. "But Bob,you just had a Kölsch beer on tap in June," you may be saying to yourself. Yes, we had/haveHarpoon Summer Beer on tap and while it is a Kölsch style ale, I want to revisit a local brew thatreally does a bang up job representing the true Kölsch style. Fordham's Queen Anne's Kölsch. Ofcourse if you want a true Kölsch you would need to travel to Cologne where the style originated. The appearance is like a Pilsner pale straw-colored and clear. The taste is delicate and refreshing, less bitter than a Pilsner, fruitier and a little sweeter, often with a delightful biscuityness. A palebarley malt is used, sometimes with wheat added. The result is a refreshing cool beer, ideal forsummer afternoons. Many people would mistake it for a lager, and foreign brewers who attempt abrew in this style often describe it, incorrectly, as a lager. In fact, Kölsch is a warm fermenting beer,a survivor of the days before lager. Fordham will stay on tap through August or until the distributorsays I have to pick something else because they ran out. Our bottle beer of the month(s) will beMiller Lite.
I would like to remind everyone that we do have summer hours and the Bauernstube will be closedall Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays during the month of July. I have set up the Tiki-torches,Simon planted the horseshoe pits, every now and again the grill will be out, all we need is you. Ihope you have a great summer. Please note I will be on vacation from July 4th through July 18th. Ifthere is anything that cannot wait until my return please see Gary Huggler. Thanks!

DELAWARE HAUSBRÄUERS
So you think the committees have all taken the summer off, there's nothing to do. Not so fast. TheHausbräuers are still going to meet in July, just not on our scheduled night. We'll be meeting onSaturday July 30th, (hopefully with our heads head high from taking the grand prize at the Fair) at 8am. We'll be brewing 20 gallons on John Greer's sculpture and fermenting in his large fermenter. This would be a great day to come out and see how larger batches are brewed and some of theadvanced equipment utilized. We'll be using a grain mill, pumps, heat exchangers, and all kinds offun stuff. Don't forget the State Fair on July 23rd. See you at the club!

ENZIAN VOLKSTANZGRUPPE
We have had a very busy spring this year with the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe. On March 19 severalof our Kindergruppe members participated in a Jugend Einzelplattler event at the LancasterLiederkranz in Manheim, PA. This event gave our young dancers an opportunity to perform asindividual couples and be adjudicated. Chris Henry came in first place in his category, LillianPresley won second in her category, and Morgan Schulz tied for second in her category. OurKindergruppe also participated in the 18th Annual Mid-Atlantic Kinderfest on June 4 in Dover, NJ.Over 200 children attended from the mid-Atlantic region, stretching from New England to Virginia, with over 300 adults also attended. Plans are underway for us to host the Kinderfest here at theDSB in 2013.
On May 7 our adult dancers participated in judges training at the Lancaster Liederkranz. Wedanced over and over again that afternoon to give adjudicators ample opportunity to practicescoring in preparation for Gaufest. The evening closed with a fun-filled heimatabend with several ofour Musikanten musicians performing. Between June 30 and July 3, over 30 members of the EVTGattended the 23rd Gaufest in Orlando, FL. This biannual event is always exciting becauseschuhplattler dancers from all over North America gather together for four days of competition, demonstrating new dances, camaraderie, and gemütlichkeit. At our August DSB meeting we willannounce the results of the competitions. After Gaufest we will break for the month of July, andthen resume rehearsals in August in preparation for our Stiftungsfest and Oktoberfest. Pleaseconsider becoming involved with the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe. Rehearsals are on Thursdayevenings with children and jugend practicing from 7:30 to 8:30, and adults starting at 8:30.
GARDEN COMMITTEE
It is mid-term and I hope you have been enjoying the“Pictures of the Month” so far. I have been taking themfrom the Austrian “Alter Bauernkalender für dasGemeinjahr 2011” (in English: something like theFarmer’s Almanac).
Plant of the Months of July and August: ROSE
A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosacea. There are over 100species. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Ornamental roses have been cultivated for millennia. Many thousands ofrose hybrids and cultivars have been bred and selected for garden use as flowering plants. Roseperfumes are made from rose oil, which is obtained by steam distilling the crushed petals of roses. The oil is transparent pale yellow or yellow-grey in color. In the United States, “French rose syrup”is used to make rose scones and marshmallows. The fruits (“rose hip”) of many species havesignificant levels of vitamins and have been used as a food supplement. If you ever come across arose named “Saint Joseph”… buy it. It develops the most beautiful blossoms, which are initiallyyellow-orange, thereafter turn into orange-pink and finally into a deep voluptuous red. Once thebloom is gone, cut the branches back to the first 5 fingered-leaf, which allows further branches todevelop. All that roses require is a fairly good soil, lots of sunshine, enough water when it is reallyhot. A rose fertilizer applied according to commercial instructions during the growth season doesnot hurt either. A well kept rose will be able to fight all diseases and pests (which by the way aretoo numerous to name in a short column). Please enjoy the roses, which I planted on the southpart of the DSB property.
Have a HAPPY summer. Elisabeth Knapp ([email protected])
