1 IntroductionThe NESSoS Mobility Program is a mechanism that supports the integration of activities across vari-

ous sites within the network. It brings together researchers working on related topics; it drives knowledgeexchange and knowledge generation through union and diversity. It increases the capability of joint coop-eration among researchers. Each mobility action may pursue a different specific purpose (i.e., teachingshort graduate, undergraduate, or industry-oriented courses in a different hosting organization; collabora-tion with industrial partners in carrying out industrial case studies; integrating different tools or validatingthem against large, complex, multi-facet scenarios; and so on), but all of them will contribute to increasethe cohesion of the research ideas developed within the network and to promote the exchange of knowl-edge among the different partners. In particular, the following objectives are specifically addressed by theMobility Program:

• To ease the mobility of the researchers within the consortium by providing adequate managementsupport, especially for medium-term doctoral research stays and medium-term internships with in-dustrial partners.

• To create additional mobility positions within the consortium by leveraging on mobility programs setup by partners.

• To publicize the opening of mobility positions within the consortium, by creating and maintaining aweb-based mobility information centre, the so-called Mobility Portal, with synergies and commoninterests, needs, and expertises among the partners.

In chapter 2 we report on the first 12 months of the NESSoS Mobility Program, and we includes anassessment of its results in chapter 3.

2 Report on the results2.1 The Mobility Portal

The Mobility Portal (http://www.nessos-project.eu/mbp) supports the NESSoS Mobility Programme indifferent ways. Basically, for simple visitors (see Figures 2.1 and 2.2),

• it provides up-to-date information about mobility actions already performed within the Mobility Pro-gramme: namely, for each of them, the starting date, the participant, the institutions which areinvolved, the duration, the source for the funding, and the summary of the action;

• it graphically depicts, inside an annual calendar, the mobility actions already performed;

• it provides up-to-date information about other mobility programmes: namely, for each of them, theinstitution which runs the programme, the eligible candidates, the main goals of the programme, theduration, the funding that it provides, the deadlines for applications, and the link to the programme’ssite.

Figure 2.1: Mobility Portal: main page (top).

In addition, for those registrants in the Mobility Portal (see Figure 2.3),

NESSoS - 256980 13

Page 14: Deliverable D3.2 Report on the NoE Mobility Program and

Figure 2.2: Mobility Portal: main page (bottom).

• it provides an on-line application form to submit a request for a mobility grant, by filling the followingfields: the destination partner,the estimated duration, the objectives of the mobility action, and therequested grant (for travel and lodging);

• it provides on-line access to their requests for grants, while they have not been yet accepted: inparticular, requests can be reviewed, modify, and even withdraw by their own creators;

• it provides an on-line form to report about a mobility actions already performed, including the startingdate, the duration, the budget (only travel and lodging), the funding source, and a summary. Thisreport is automatically published, and available for visitors, in the Mobility Portal.

Notice that everybody can register into the Mobility Portal by providing his or her name, Institution(which so far need to be part of the consortium), and a registrant’s password.

Last but not least, for the coordinators of the Mobility Programme (see Figure 2.4),

• it provides on-line access to the pending requests for mobility grants, from which they can accept orreject the applications;

• it provides on-line access to the Mobility Portal’ activity logs.

Although currently hosted by IMDEA Software, the Mobility Portal is accessible from the NESSoSJVRL Web Portal. From a technical point of view, the Mobility Portal is built using the following hardwareand software:

• PHP 5;

• JavaScript;

• a server running Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.1;

• Apache 2.2.16 web server;

• a postgreSQL 8.4.7 database.

Results

Table 2.1 show statistics about the registered participants per partner in the Mobility Portal.Tables 2.2 and 2.3 show statistics about the Mobility Portal’s visitors during the period from February

1st to August 26th. They were automatically generated with Visitors Web Log Analyzer version 0.7. (Note:multiple hits with the same IP, user agent and access day, are considered a single visit).

2.2 The Mobility Actions

The Mobility Program fosters short and medium-term exchange visits of (full) researchers, post-doctoraland PhD students, and industrial members. These exchange visits can be of different types, with differentgoals and durations. However, the NESSoS Mobility Program focus on:

• Medium-term exchange visits of PhD students, to integrate existing research infrastructure, method-ologies and tools, and/or to carry out common case-studies and applications.

• Medium-term internships of PhD students with industrial partners, to reduce the gap among bestpractices and research.

• Short-term, medium-term postdoctoral visits, to increase cohesion of research ideas, and promoteexchange of knowledge.

• Short-term, medium-term visits of industrial members at academic research partners (and viceversa), to foster industry-driven research and technology transfer.

3 Assessment of the results3.1 The Mobility Portal

In the upcoming months, action will be taken to increase the visibility of the Mobility Portal. However, withits current main focus on mobility actions among the network’s partners, the number of potential visitorsis certainly limited.

Future work on the Mobility Portal will be focused on integrating the portal within the JVRL, at leastfrom a user point of view: the user should have the same access credentials for all the JVRL web sites, oreven a single sign-on solution. This seems to require to enable a binding with the already existing LDAPdirectory.

3.2 The Mobility Actions

During the NoE, the Mobility Program is targeting to manage a total of 30 medium-term visits of PhDstudents between academic/research partners (or the equivalent amount in short-term visits). Moreover, atotal of 6 PhD students from academic/research partners are expected to carry out internships in industrialpartners as part of the Mobility Program.

In these first 12 months, although the total number of short, medium-term visits may not correspond tothe initial expectations, it is important to highlight that there has been two long-term visits (approximately3 months), one of a senior researcher and the other of a PhD student, to an academic/research partner.In any case, driven by increasing integration of activities across the network partners, the number ofexchange visits is bound to grow in the upcoming months.

4 ConclusionsThe overall goal of the NESSoS Mobility Program is to foster the integration of activities across the

network partners. We have reported on the first 12 months of the Program and provided an assessmentof its results. In summary,

• The Mobility Portal is available since month 4.

• During the first year, there have been 4 short-term visits, and 3 medium-term visits.

• The total number of partners involved in exchange visits so far is 8 (out of 12 partners).

• Driven by increasing integration of activities across the network, the number of exchange visits isbound to grow in the upcoming months: in particular, 4 short-term visits are already planned for thenext three months.
