PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Adults-Only Afternoon

Games

by Philip E. Carr, President – MPCA

June is a busy month for our family. We celebrate the birthdays of our two sons, Geoffrey and Doug-las, which form a somewhat poetic sandwich around Father’s Day.

June will also be a busy month for the Mount Pleasant Community. In addition to the opening of our outdoor pool, our Special Events Commit-tee has planned a Father’s Day event. Thank you to Director Dana Saric and her Committee for their hard work to date. We also are looking forward to another community event arising from the Com-munity Collabs project that I wrote about in the April issue of the Pulse. We are also working on the possibility of a project funded in part by a grant from the Calgary Parking Authority.

Finally, you will be seeing some major main-tenance work on our Sportsplex. While we are blessed to have this facility—every member of our family has made use of it over the years—it is showing its age. The work includes foundation lift-ing, wall repairs, and replacing the flat roof portion of the structure. You will appreciate that this major work can only take place when the facility is not in use and the ice has been removed. All told, we will be close to expenditures of $250,000.00. Happily, there are grants available which will reimburse us for much of the work. Thank you to Sportsplex Di-rector Roger Leach, the City of Calgary’s Catherine Gulinao, and Carol Kinley of Benchmark (the con-tracted operator of the facility) for their hard work on this project

Our Wednesday afternoon games sessions continue until June 19th each Wednesday afternoon at 1:15 in the Upper Hall. We take a break each July and August but will be back come September. Please plan to join us for Scrabble, bridge, euchre, crib, or whatever game you’d like to bring while en-joying a few laughs with others. If you’d like to be reminded of our game sessions, please contact Linda at (403) 289-8390 or [email protected]. And feel free to invite your friends, whether or not they live in Mount Pleasant.

Our June 25th book will be The Enchanted by Rene Denfield. "This is an enchanted place. Others don’t see it, but I do." The enchanted place is an ancient stone prison, viewed through the eyes of a death row inmate who finds escape in his books and in re-imagining life around him, weaving a fan-tastical story of the people he observes and the world he inhabits. Fearful and reclusive, he senses what others can-not. Though bars confine him every minute of every day, he marries visions of golden horses running beneath the prison, heat flowing like molten metal from their backs with the devastating violence of prison life.

Two outsiders venture here: a fallen priest and the Lady, an investigator who searches for buried information from prisoners’ pasts that can save those soon-to-be-executed. Digging into the background of a killer named York, she un-covers wrenching truths that challenge familiar notions of victim and criminal, innocence and guilt, honesty and cor-ruption—ultimately revealing shocking secrets of her own.

Beautiful and transcendent, The Enchanted reminds us of how our humanity connects us all, and how beauty and love exist even amidst the most nightmarish reality.

Our July 23rd book will be My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.

We meet from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Lower Hall, 602 22 Ave NW. Everyone is welcome to attend to enjoy discussing books (and snacks!) with those with similar interests in a fun, casual atmosphere. If you’d like further information, please contact Brianna at [email protected] or 403 836-3626.

EXERCISE PROGRAM

Community Day TripsNot Just For Seniors!

Those who made the trip to Rosebud Theatre on April 17th for the matinée performance of Bright Star were thrilled with the quality of the play. It was a marvelous musical with great singing, playing, and acting. Most said this was the best Rosebud play they’d seen.

Coming up are a CPO dress rehearsal performance on May 31st and another Stage West outing on June 5th for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.

If you have questions or would like to join us on any of our outings, contact Linda ([email protected] or 403 289-8390). Many of our day trips are open to everyone, not just seniors. They often sell out before they can be mentioned in the Pulse—get advance notice by joining our email distribution list.

Open to All AdultsThe Spring exercise session winds up on June 19th but it’s not too soon to start thinking about joining us in September. Our program is for everybody interested in increasing their strength, flexibility, balance, and aero-bic fitness. Come for a free drop-in session at 10:00 a.m. any Wednesday to check things out. The regular drop-in fee is $12 per class. Sign up for the all classes for only $7 per class (to be confirmed). Thanks to The City of Calgary for subsidizing the cost. If you are interested in joining us or would like further information about the class, please contact Linda O’Hanlon at 403 289-8390 or [email protected].

COMMUNITY BUILDER

& B mersZ mers

Esther CuneoEsther must be a very strong community builder as two people nominated her! After speaking with her, I can’t agree more. People who have volunteered with Esther say she “is an authentic leader who gives 110% on everything she does and is genuinely inter-ested in helping grow relationships in the Mount Pleasant community.”

Esther and her husband moved to a small Mount Pleasant house in April 2013 and have since moved twice within the community to accommodate their growing family. They fell in love with Mount Pleasant due to its proximity to Confedera-tion Park, the inner-city location, and the people who live here. Esther started volunteering when she became a stay-at-home mom; although she does some part-time work it wasn’t fulfill-ing enough either mentally or socially.

We’ve often seen Playgroup Directors move on to other MPCA Board positions, but Esther was different. She first joined the Board as Membership Director (now Engagement) then took on the additional responsibility for Playgroup. A new Play-group Chair was needed to ensure the program, Calgary’s longest running group, continued (stayed tuned for its 40th anniversary in Fall 2021). Esther quickly put up her hand as her two children had enjoyed their time there so much. She worked hard with other volunteers to update and document Playgroup’s procedures, making the space more inviting and expanded marketing efforts to reach more people.

Participating in Playgroup helped Esther in her Engagement role as the people there gave her confidence in her ideas and are a great support system overall. Her Engagement role focus-es on activities to build community and connections through engaging resident and the MPCA. Esther organized MPCA’s presence at the North Hill Communities Trade Show in March 2019 and is currently putting together Neighbour Day activi-ties. She is also working on projects related to intersection, biking, and pedestrian safety and helping revamp the MPCA’s business membership as well as the website. As you know, volunteers are always needed to make these things hap-pen. Be a part of the vibrant network by emailing Esther at [email protected].

Esther also helps out at various Mount Pleasant events and takes part in brain-storming sessions with other Board mem-bers. Outside of the MPCA, she also volunteers at her sons’ school, helps organize the annual Neighbour Day party on her block, and shovels her neighbour’s sidewalk. She wants to in-still her volunteer ways in her children.

Mount Pleasant is very lucky to have Esther and her family in our community. As one of her nominators wrote, “Esther is re-ally helping build a vibrant place for families to thrive”.

Next Lunch Wednesday, June 26th“The first 40 years of childhood are always the hardest.” – QuotesIdeas

We had a good ham and scalloped potatoes lunch in April, topped off with fudgsicles for dessert (skim milk to counter all those lovely potatoes). At time of writing, we’re looking forward to meeting another Mount Pleas-ant author at our May lunch. Ken Vanberg will speak about his new book, Get Rich Buy It Tomorrow. If you aren’t a senior, we hope you will join us after lunch for tea and coffee to hear Ken’s presentation.

Although it’s snowing this weekend (it’s April now), we’re planning for the summer and, we hope, many games of bocce. Our annual picnic in the park, spon-sored by The City of Calgary and MPCA, is set for July. Costco has given us a generous gift card which we may use for a bbq chicken lunch. The fun, good food, and good company happens every month.

We’re happy to see the increased number of people who come to our lunches and especially to hear the volume of conversation. These lunches started to give community seniors a social opportunity, a reason to get out of their houses, renew old friendships, and make new ones. Many thanks to Mount Pleasant for sponsor-ing the lunches and to all of the volunteers who make them possible. That said, we know there are more se-niors living in the community who would enjoy meeting their neighbours and a hot meal each month. We just can’t find you! If you are a senior living in Mount Pleas-ant or if you know of one, please get in touch with Linda at (403) 289-8390 or [email protected]. You’ll learn about our lunches, day trips, exercise class, book club, and games session—all good ways to expand your world. If you need a ride, we’ll arrange that for you. We look forward to seeing new as well as familiar faces at our get-togethers.

Youth Substance Abuse Prevention (Iceland Model)“We didn’t say to them, you’re coming in for treatment. We said, we’ll teach you anything you want to learn: music, dance, hip hop, art, martial arts.” – Dr. Harvey Milkman

Alcohol and drug use are growing in Calgary. In 2017, more Calgarians died from fentanyl overdoses than automobile col-lisions and homicides combined. In response to this crisis, I co-sponsored our city-wide mental health and addictions strategy to invest in mental health and harm reduction services to save lives. But band-aid solutions alone will not fix the problem. We need to examine mental health and addictions issues holisti-cally to address root causes. That starts by rethinking how we create circumstances for kids to live healthy lives.

In 1998, Iceland was amidst a similar crisis. Youth alcohol and drug use were among the highest in Europe and social dis-order left citizens afraid to venture onto the streets at night. Traditional education programs about the negative effects of drugs and alcohol were not helping. So, parents, policy makers, and scientists decided to try a different approach: Planet Youth. Through a new community-based model, Iceland reduced youth monthly substance use rates to the lowest in Europe, from 42 per cent to 5 per cent over 14 years.

The success of Iceland’s Planet Youth model comes from their focus on community involvement and collaboration between families, researchers, community leaders, and policy makers. This unique, long-term approach focuses on fostering healthy families and coping behaviours. Two key outcomes resulted from their research: parents spending more time with their kids and strong upfront investment in after school programs for every child.

Today the Planet Youth model is being implemented across 23 countries with cities leading the charge locally. Calgary’s kids deserve a healthy and happy life without substance abuse, and it is our duty, together, to build that future for them.
