SIERRA: Superior Technology

The heart of the SIERRA oil-free rotary screw aircompressor is our superior two-stage compressionmodule. Our rotors are precision-machined in a twenty-step manufacturing process that ensures unmatchedrotor profile accuracy and repeatability. By using thehighest quality bearings and precision gearing tomaintain exact alignment of the rotors, you are assuredof years of reliable, efficient service.

Generously sized, anti-friction bearings easily handle allexpected loads to keep the airend running smoothly. Inthe vital sealing arrangement, the SIERRA uses durablestainless steel for the air seals and a time-provenlabyrinth design for the oil seals. This combinationprotects the rotors from lubrication impurities whilekeeping the loss of air through leakage to an absoluteminimum, ensuring the continuous flow of clean, oil-freecompressed air.

The precision gearing incorporated in the compressionmodule drive design optimizes both speed and rotortiming, providing trouble-free performance over a longlife. And the improved lip seal on the bull gear driveinput shaft eliminates any opportunity for oil leakage intothe SIERRA package.

Solving The Need ForBetter Oil-Free Performance

The challenge: to give our customers an oil-free rotarycompressor that operates at peak performancethroughout its lifetime. After a great deal of research,Ingersoll-Rand found that inferior rotor coatings wearaway over time, leaving the rotors unprotected andsusceptible to impurities in the air and to the effects oftemperature variation. Eventually, this leads to reduceperformance or even compressor failure.

After two years of modification and testing, Ingersoll-Rand chose the coating that consistently outperformedall others in adhesion and durability tests: UltraCoat.Now, we use UltraCoat to protect every SIERRA airend.

To help our customers get the best performance, wedidn't limit our improvements to the coating. Weselected stainless steel and aluminum for the pipinglinking the intercooler with the stainless steel second-stage rotors. Condensation created in the coolingprocess could not corrode these materials, eliminatingthe possibility of rust formation and carry-through,further lengthening the life of the coating and rotors.

UntraCoat Protection andPerformance

The first step to full UltraCoat protection is thesuperior surface preparation of our rotors andhousings. As the images on the left show, ourcomponent surface treatments allow for the tightestpossible grip for the coating. In the next step, UltraCoat is applied using robotics for the thinnest, mosteven coat available. Then the rotors and housingsare heat-cured to solidify the bond between thecoating and the rotor or housing surface.

This advanced starter gives the compressor a controlled,cushioned start, eliminating current surges andextending component life for increased system reliability.

QUIET OPERATION

The combination of an inlet sound box and a lowsound enclosure design keeps sound levels at aminimum. What's more, SIERRA compressors haveefficient pulsation dampeners on each stage ofcompression, reducing noise even further whileensuring a pulsation-free discharge for smooth airflow.
