Descriptor
This qualification reflects the role of individuals employed as beauty therapists to provide a broad range of beauty therapy treatments and services including facial treatments, body massage and treatments, hair removal, lash and brow treatments, nail and make-up services. This includes consultation with clients to provide beauty advice, recommend beauty treatments and services, and sell retail skin-care and cosmetic products.
These individuals work relatively autonomously, and are accountable for personal outputs. Their work involves the self-directed application of knowledge and skills with substantial depth in some areas where judgement is required in planning and selecting appropriate equipment, services and techniques.
Work is typically conducted in beauty salons and spas.

Although no pathway is applicable, entry into this qualification is recommended for individuals who have attained a Certificate qualification within the training package and are looking to further their career within the Beauty and Spa Therapy industry.
This qualification can be completed as described in this Delivery and Assessment Strategy.
Pathways from Qualification
The trainer/assessor will advise students of further vocational pathways and articulation into higher levels of training during the delivery of this course.
Students are provided with advice on employment and training options throughout the delivery of the program. While ACNM may not offer all the qualifications indicated within the pathway, they identify relevant progression that may be attained:

Students may pursue further qualifications through other training providers or obtain traineeships through employment.
If a qualification is only partly achieved, a Statement of Attainment is issued for successful achievement of single or multiple units of competency. At a later date, the individual can undertake further skills development or training and be assessed against additional competencies until they have achieved all of the competencies required for the full qualification.
Students can exit at any point and receive a Statement of Attainment.
The Hairdressing and Beauty Services (Personal Services) sector qualifications are flexible to meet a range of jobs, support current qualifications, and provide for a wide range of career pathways. They allow for various entry options, including direct entry at all qualification levels, and credit transfer between qualifications.
College Entry Requirements, Pre-training Review
ACNM is an open access institution and admission is granted through the normal tertiary process of direct entry. Prospective students may be admitted via direct application.
ACNM student selection process has been developed to ensure that students are enrolled in a qualification that best suits their needs. This selection criterion takes into account a variety of factors when assessing a student’s suitability for undertaking the course/program. The following will be considered when deciding suitability for enrolment including:
The student’s needs and desired outcomes;
The ability and commitment of the student to complete the course/program;
Eligibility requirements as outlined in the applicable National Training Package and funding if being sought;

Students existing ability in the ACSF core skills – learning, reading, oral communication and numeracy.
Students not meeting these requirements will be directed to more suitable qualifications or skill development programs.
To support a successful study experience with the College, applicants are required to meet the following entry requirements:
1. All applicants must attend a final admissions interview upon submission of their enrolment paper work. During the admissions process an applicant may be requested to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy test and additional online courses to support the applicants successful study journey.
2. All applicants must supply the College with a Unique Student Identifier (USI) should their enrolment be successful.
3. Applicants for whom English is not the primary language must have an academic IELTS score of 6.0 or as per pathway requirements. This level has been set to ensure the student will have the ability to successfully engage in their study. Refer to the English Proficiency Policy -VET for details. At the discretion of the College, prospective students may be required to undertake an assessment of English language at their own cost and achieve a result at least equivalent to:

Paper based (PBT) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 537.
4. All applicants must meet minimum computer literacy standards as determined by the College and have unrestricted access to the internet and a personal email account.
5. It is the responsibility of all students admitted to College programs to acquire the required text books, delivery tools and resources required to fully participate on campus and/or in online subjects.
6. Students not meeting these requirements will be directed to more suitable qualifications or skill development programs.
Students are asked to indicate on the Enrolment Form any disabilities they have. When a disability has been indicated, a student adviser, program leader or trainer/assessor will make a time to discuss with the student and determine if the student meets the entry requirements and to discuss all needs related to the disability.

These updates will advise of changes to the Training Package relevant to the specific industry and/or qualification. Where changes to relevant Training Packages and/or qualifications on scope the National Academic Director will examine the amendments that have been made and inform all affected staff of the changes via the Beauty Advisory Board meetings and communication in the Source.
The College will transfer all currently enrolled students into a revised Training Package qualification within 12 months of its endorsement date published on the national register (training.gov.au), unless it would genuinely disadvantage students to do so. The College would then continue to deliver the superseded qualification for up to 12 months.The National Academic Director is responsible for the transition of training products.
The transition process will be implemented as per the College’s Training Product Transition Policy and Procedure.
Discontinuation of Training Program
Courses can be discontinued if they are no longer viable to the ACNM, or have to be discontinued due to external factors such as government or industry decisions. If this occurs the College will enact one or more of the following options as per the Course/Training Packages Discontinuation Policy:

Foundation Skills
Foundation Skills are integral to the core skills needed to engage in successful work and life and, as such, must be considered in the design, customisation, contextualisation, delivery and assessment of all vocational education and training programs in an integrated and holistic way.

Employability skills are integral to workplace competency and, as such, must be considered in the design, customisation/contextualisation, delivery and assessment of all vocational education and training programs in an integrated and holistic way. Units of competency have been developed to ensure that relevant Employability Skills have been embedded within the competency components and are considered by ACNM in all aspects of delivery and assessment.

Qualification Rules
(Required rules from the Training Package)
To attain the Diploma of Beauty Therapy, a total of twenty five (25) units of competency must be completed comprising thirteen (13) core units and twelve (12) elective units consisting of:
all units from Group A, B, or C as outlined in the training package:
o Group A -Electrolysis/Diathermy o Group B -Relaxation Massage o Group C -Spa Treatments
remaining units from Group D -General Electives, elsewhere in SHB Training Package, or any other current training package or accredited course.
The selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the complexity of skill appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification.

Duration & Schedule
The qualifications’ Volume of Learning is 39 weeks full-time which lies within the AQFs Qualification Type Descriptor. Nominal hours, as per NCVER have also been considered to in the calculation.
All assessment requirements must be completed in the duration in order to gain the qualification.
Training and assessment will be delivered in three trimesters of thirteen weeks. The Course Structure is attached (Appendix 1) for specific information regarding the delivery sequence of this qualification.

The course will be delivered on face to face and students will be supported through the services provided at the College of Natural Beauty campus.

Resource Requirements
ACNM has reviewed the equipment and facility requirements for this course and ensures that:
All staff involved in the delivery and assessment of this course have direct access to the current training package.
All staff involved in delivering the training have access to facilitator, assessor and candidate support materials relative to their areas of delivery and assessment.
All assessors have access to online and print copies of the assessment tools that are used in this course.
ACNM has access to staff and training/assessment resources to meet the requirements of candidates with special needs and has an assessment approach that incorporates reasonable adjustment procedures.
ACNM has an operational library on all campuses including hard copy resources, e-learning resources, journal access and e-text licenses, study guides.
Suitable classroom facilities for all types of learning, delivery and assessment in a variety of modes where required.
Fully beauty clinic/spa for demonstration purposes where required. Student Support
At the time of entry, potential applicants identified with special needs in regards to language, literacy or numeracy; physical or intellectual ability; or cultural or ethnic background will be advised of the assistance College of Natural Beauty (CNB) will be able to provide. This information will be gathered by the college through applicant self-disclosure in response to targeted questioning, or core skills testing.
The applicant can then make an informed decision about enrolment, and CNB (in conjunction with the applicant) can make appropriate provision for accommodating the applicant’s needs.
CNB recognises that it may not have the internal knowledge, resources or expertise to identify the supports needed for a particular defined learning need and certain other issues that applicants may disclose, such as mental health issues. Where applicants disclose such issues and/or needs CNB will support them through referral to relevant professionals external to the Institute to identify the support required. Any costs associated with such consultations with external professionals would be borne by the applicant.
If and when the potential applicant with an issue and/or need enrols, an appropriate learning plan will be developed and implemented to suit their requirements.
Students are asked to identify their individual need, but are sometimes reluctant to do so. ACNM personnel monitor the progress of students and their readiness for assessment as they progress through their course.

Reasonable Adjustment
The College shall take all reasonable steps, as per the Disability and Special Needs Policy and Reasonable Adjustment Policy to ensure that:
A prospective student with a disability, medical condition or special need is able to seek admission to or apply for enrolment
A student with a disability, medical condition or special need is able to participate in the courses provided, and use the facilities and services of the College
Where required, adjustments will be made to aid the students learning.
Reasonable adjustments are made to ensure that the student will not be presented with artificial barriers to demonstrating achievement in the course/program but will only occur where the adjustments do not alter the expected performance standards for learning and assessment.
The need that forms the basis of any adjustment to the course will be identified and appropriate strategies will be agreed between the student; the National Training Manager and/or a Senior Trainer and Assessor; and an Access and Equity Program Officer. Any adjustments will be recorded in the student file, session plan and/or training plan (if applicable) and will not compromise the competency standard.

Assessments.
Delivery and Assessment Staff
All ACNM trainers/assessors involved in the delivery and assessment of this course/program have demonstrated their vocational competencies in their Trainers and Assessors Matrix directly covering the requirements of the training package.
ACNM has documented the human resources available to deliver this training product. This ensures that trainers and assessors are suitable and available for delivery and assessment. This is recorded at a unit of competency level to ensure any specific requirements are met for each unit, and allows efficient deployment of trainers/assessors to meet the student’s needs.
To deliver the units of competency in this course the trainer/assessor is required to have the following vocational and assessment qualifications:
TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or its successor;
Hold the relevant unit of competency they are delivering; OR
Required vocational competencies or equivalent experience up and to the level being delivered;
Relevant and current industry experience including ongoing vocational exposure, development and experience to maintain currency of industry skills;
Relevant and ongoing personal development;
In excess of 3 years’ industry experience;
Have completed mapping to skills matrix;
All trainers/assessors with qualifications awarded overseas have formal evidence of equivalence from an approved Australian recognition authority.
Trainer/assessor profiles are initiated at the commencement of engagement contracts and updated twice annually from thereon to align with vocational currency and VET currency.
Some areas of VET currency will be provided by internal professional development for facilitators provided by ACNM.
The Trainers and Assessors Register of current trainers/assessors for delivery of this qualification is maintained by the National Academic Director.

Assessment
The College maintains the Assessment Policy – VET which aims to promote transparent, equitable and accountable practices and justifiable outcomes.
The College will ensure that the assessment items:
Follow the critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate this unit of competency as per the unit of competency detail.
Are based on the principles of assessment (Valid, Flexible, Reliable and Fair).
Embrace the rules of evidence (Validity, Sufficiency, Authenticity and Currency).
Assessors will;
Hold the relevant Training and Education (TAE) competencies;
Hold relevant vocational competencies at least to the level being delivered and assessed;
Have industry currency directly relevant to the training/assessment being undertaken;

Practice continuous development of their VET knowledge and skills as well as their industry currency and competence as an assessor.
ACNM ensures that all training and assessing staff of the units of competency included in the course have access to:
The present version of the unit of competency as well as the assessment guidelines.
Trainer, assessor and student support materials and resources relating to the unit of competency.
Sufficient resources to meet the requirements of students with special needs and has a process in place that includes reasonable adjustment procedures.
The necessary facilities and equipment needed to conduct the unit.
Assessment results will be based on the Assessment Policy – VET which includes:
Assessment of elements
Assessing competence
Additional assessment criteria.
For each unit of competency (and each element within the unit), a range of evidence will be collected as per the evidence gathering techniques set out in this DAS. It is a requirement that all assessments maintain at minimum, two types of appropriate evidence to verify the student’s competence for each element within the unit, which addresses the performance criteria arrangements of the elements. At least one of these evidence pieces will be a form of direct evidence with some evidence pieces overlapping elements and units within the course.
All assessment tools are aligned directly with the course in the following ways:
Meet Unit, Element and Performance Criteria requirements;
Covers the Unit Assessment Conditions; Covers all Knowledge Evidence, and Performance Evidence;
Covers Specific Evidence Requirements as listed in each individual unit of competency.
ACNM has followed the guidelines of the recommended assessment methods, evidence guide, performance criteria, required skills and knowledge and range statement of the units of competency. Students will undertake both progressive and summative assessments. The various assessment methods provide relevant tasks, exercises and assessments that are mapped against competency elements, performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, and employability skills.
Trainers/assessors and delivery and assessment materials will:
Explain the context and purpose of the assessment and the assessment process;
Explain the Competency Standards to be assessed and the evidence to be collected;

Outline the assessment procedures, the preparation that the student should undertake and answer any questions regarding assessment procedures.
Assess the needs of the student and where necessary, negotiate reasonable adjustment for assessing people with disabilities without compromising the integrity of the competencies.
Seek feedback regarding the student’s understanding of the competency standards, evidence requirements and assessment process.
Assessment Appeals
ACNM looks to ensure that students are satisfied with training and assessment processes to assist in preventing where possible the for assessment appeals.
If a student requests to have an assessment decision appealed they will in the first instance be advised to discuss the matter with the relevant trainer/assessor in an effort to reach a suitable outcome.
If a domestic student does not agree with the result awarded the student can access the Grievance Policy – VET and Grievance Procedure available which manages students’ grievances in an equitable, confidential and prompt manner. International students can access the Complaints and Appeals Procedure – International.
The table on the last page demonstrates an overview of the assessment methods to be used in each unit of competency.
Detailed mapping will be used to ensure the assessment methods address the unit of competency’s elements; performance criteria; required skills and knowledge.
Simulated Assessment Environment (SAE)
Simulation is a form of evidence gathering that can be used with this course and involves the student completing or dealing with a task, activity or problem in an off-the-job situation that replicates the workplace context – Simulated Assessment Environment (SAE). The SAE must simulate real life working conditions with all relevant equipment and conditions of that working environment, including interactions with clients and co-workers.
To meet this requirement ACNM can provide a simulated workplace environment for the student to demonstrate the following:

Underpinning knowledge
Generic skills such as decision making and problem solving
Workplace practices such as effective communication
Working as a team, fulfilling responsibilities and expectation of the job and workplace.

Students at Risk
The College will identify students at jeopardy, as per its Assessment Policy – VET and Academic Progression Policy - VET, of not completing the course within the earliest timeframe possible. Identifiers used by the College include:

The College has intervention strategies, including a variety of student support services available to enable students at jeopardy of not academically progressing to complete the unit/s of competency included in the course in the nominal hours prescribed. Educational Pathways/Advanced Standing
The College has methodical Educational Pathways that includes non-formal, informal and formal learning via Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer. Educational pathway processes outlined to prospective students prior to enrolment via the website, discussion, the Student Handbook, or supplied on request. Students are encouraged to apply if they believe they may be eligible for an Educational Pathway.
Pathway assessors are responsible for conducting the evaluation of all applicants. Previous learning will be assessed as equivalent to the College’s unit of study and/or unit of competency for advanced standing to be granted. Assessment will take into account the units of study, units of competency, volume of learning, program of study, including content and the learning and

assessment approaches of the previous learning and/or work life experience.
RPL will be available to students where it is appropriate and suitable to a specific award course and only where a student’s previous non-formal or formal learning has taken place within the last three years as outlined in the RPL Procedure – VET.
ACNM is obligated to recognise Australian Quality Framework qualifications and Statement of Attainment issued by other Australian RTOs.
The formal education evidence for CT must be within the past three years to be considered. The CT processes will support VET to VET and Higher Education to VET advanced standings. Credit Transfer will only be processed when and official Statement of Attainment, that will be verified for validity as proof that the units of competency have been attained from an RTO that is registered to deliver nationally accredited training,
Successful educational pathway applicants will have ‘CT’ (Credit Transfer) and/or RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) applied to the unit/s of competency on their academic record and considered exempt from having to complete those units.
Unsuccessful educational pathways will be notified to students in writing with an explanation of why the application was unsuccessful. If the student wishes to dispute the unsuccessful result they may access the Grievance Policy – VET to appeal the decision.
Validation and Moderation
Validation and moderation are processes in the College’s commitment to quality assurance through continuous improvement.
Validation and moderation aims to align tools, training or assessment tools, to the qualifications’ requirements and desired outcomes whilst ensuring the philosophy of natural medicine is preserved.
It is the responsibility of the National Academic Director to ensure validation and moderation are implemented as per the Validation and Moderation Policy.
Validation at the College is a quality review process which involves checking that the tools produced are valid, reliable, sufficient, current, and authentic and are able to provide reasonable adjustment to the relevant aspects of the training package. The procedure will include preparation for a validation session; a session being held; and documentation of the session and its outcomes. An external validation session is optional and at the discretion of the National Academic Director. This would see members of the ‘Industry Advisory Group’ unpacking and reviewing various aspects of the DAS; delivery tools; assessment tools; and their relevance to industry standards.
Moderation at the College is the process of ensuring assessment judgements are in alignment with the ‘Rules of Evidence’ and the

Delivery and Assessment Strategy Review
The National Academic Director will be responsible for:
Reviewing and amending this Delivery and Assessment Strategy (DAS) when there is a change to the Training Package that impacts on this DAS
An annual systematic review and approval process to ensure that any College resources, industry needs, and student needs that may have been changed are considered and applied to this DAS as appropriate.
Any recommended changes required to this DAS will involve discussion with relevant VET trainer/assessors, relevant Advisory Boards/Groups. A record of the relevant data, feedback and/or changes that contribute to the review and its approval will be maintained in the relevant applications including the Learning Management System, The Source, and updated in the Continuous Improvement Register.
