    More and more businesses are fndingthat you cant run a viable delivery servicewithout bikes. They are inexpensive, ast,and efcient. But did you know that thereare laws pertaining to commercial bicyclistsand that as a business owner, you can befned or non-compliance?

    This booklet contains the inormation thatyou need to know in order to comply withthe Administrative Code of the Cityof New York Sections 10-157 and 10-157.1, which pertain to businessesthat employ commercial bicyclists.

    How will the commercial bicyclistlaw be enorced?

    The NYC DOT Commercial Bicycle Unit willenorce 10-157 and 10-157.1 at thepoint o business and will respond to 311calls. (summons to business)

    NYPD will continue to enorce bothCommercial Bicyclist moving violationsin the trafc environment (summons to

    cyclists) and 10-157 and 10-157.1at the point o business (summons

    to business)

    What Are My Commercial

    Bicyclists Required To Do?

    All bicyclists riding in New York City must obey trafclaws and may receive a summons i they do not comply.It is your responsibility to make sure that all bicyclistswho work or you know and ollow the laws at all times.

    Discuss trafc laws and compliance

    with your delivery cyclists:

    Distribute Do You Deliver?brochure to your deliverycyclists and review each section as described below.

    Trafc LawsAs you review this brochure, emphasizethe ollowing:

    Yield to pedestrians means thatthey have to let people walking goBEFORE them at all times.

    When reviewing the laws pertaining toequipment, please keep in mind that itis the business owners responsibilityto provide a helmet, a bell and ront andrear lights.

    To clariy: adults are not required bylaw to wear helmets, however anycommercial bicyclist must wear a helmet

    every time they ride on the job.

    Being predictable is a big part o stayingsae. Your cyclists must let drivers andpedestrians know when they are turningto avoid collisions. Practice these signalswith them and insist they use these

    important indicators.

    Your Delivery Cyclists

    Train new delivery sta

    Beore any employee begins working asa delivery cyclist, they must understandbicycle trafc laws. Consider using the DoYou Deliver? brochure and the CommercialBicyclist Safetyposter as training materials.

    Hold regular meetings

    Conduct weekly, biweekly, or monthly stameetings or your delivery cyclists. Go overany unsae behaviors that may have beenreported. Use our Tip of the Month sheetsrom our website nyc.gov/bikes.

    Give accuratedelivery times

    Cyclists may engage in unsae behaviorin order to deliver meals too quickly.When you tell your customer how long adelivery order will take, build in time oryour employees to stop at red lights andstop signs and ride the correct way onone-way streets.

    Bad Weather Riding

    Remember that it is more difcult orbicyclists and motorists to see each otherin the rain or snow. This makes havinglights extra important.

    Sewer grates andmanholes canbecome slipperywhen it rains. Snowon the street may

    hide potholes,grates, oricy patches.

    SLIPPERY WHEN WET

    Be Alert

    Talking on the phonewhile riding is dangerousand distracting.

    Report a Crash

    Stay at the scene, inorm a manager andcall the Police. Under Executive Order 41,Police will not inquire about immigrationstatus when asked or assistance.

    3 eet

    Avoid the Blind Spot

    Trucks have very large blindspots. Leave extra room whenriding near them.

    Dont Get Doored

    Ride at least three eet away romparked cars and stay alert. Use thebike symbol on the street as a guide.
