INTRODUCTION

The printer template is, in essence, a text file.  It is used to direct OMPM to the right location for information gathering and data deployment.  What does that mean?  When OMPM looks for a specific data from a printer, it looks up the template file to determine the location of where to find that particular information in the printer.

WORKFLOW:

1) OMPM associates a printer to a particular printer template during discovery. 2) The association is determined by the printer’s SysObjectID. 3) During discovery, resynchronization and application of a setting, OMPM looks at the template for the

location of the relevant data. 4) OMPM populates its Database by searching printer’s EWS (embedded Web Server) and SNMP, as per

template’s direction.

PARTS:

LOCATION

1. Printer templates are located in the following directory in the system (i.e. Server or PC) where OMPM server component is installed;

a. [drive]:\program files\dell\open manage\printer manager\owareapps\printers\lib 2. All templates have a file extension .tpl 3. Templates may be viewed and modified using Microsoft™ Notepad or Wordpad.

SYSOBJECTID

1. The SysObjectID of the printer is what OMPM uses to associate a template to a printer. a. To get the SysObjectID of a printer, you need to perform an SNMP get command. b. The OID of SysObjectID is: 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2

2. Workflow

Page 4: Dell OpenManage™ Printer Manager (OMPM) Template andi.dell.com/sites/doccontent/business/solutions/... · INTRODUCTION The printer template is, in essence, a text file. It is used

4

a. OMPM gets the printer’s SysObjectID. b. OMPM compares it to a database of template SysObjectID. c. OMPM associates the corresponding printer to a template. d. If there is no template that matches the SysObjectID of the printer, OMPM automatically

associates the Default template to the printer.

DEPENDENCIES

1. Template can inherit properties from other templates. 2. The line “DDPrinter_Identifier.3115cn = Default, DellShared, DellCommom1,3115cn”, tells OMPM to use

the values from 3115cn template first, if the value is not found in 3115cn template, look for it in DellCommon1 template, etc…

SNMP  AND  EWS

1. The template collects data from both SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and EWS (Embedded web server)

2. For SNMP, simply enter the OID 3. For EWS, OMPM uses Regular Expressions to identify fields

a. This whitepaper assumes you are familiar with Regular Expressions.

TEMPLATE  CREATION

Creating a template from scratch is a long and tedious process.  A faster and more reliable way of creating a template is by copying and modifying an existing template.  The procedure is as follow

1) Create a copy of an existing template 2) Find printer’s SysObjectID 3) Modify the relevant fields

a. Read  i. For information collection, OMPM can read both SNMP and EWS values ii. The read portions are usually end with “.webr” or “.snmpr” iii. Web read must be followed by “.ParseExp” iv. Example of a SNMP read:

1. DDPrinter_FaxSendPageCount.DELL3115CN.snmpr=Integer,1.3.6.1.4.1.253.8.53.13.2.1.6.104.20.13

v. Example of an EWS read:  1. DDPrinter_MemoryCapacity.DELL3115CN.webr=Integer,/ews/status/infomatio

n.htm 2. DDPrinter_MemoryCapacity.DELL3115CN.ParseExp=tr ‐> (td ‐> b ‐> font ‐>

text:"Memory Capacity") (td ‐> font ‐> text:"([0‐9\.]+).*") b. Write

i. For configuration, OMPM can write to both SNMP and EWS. ii. Since most SNMP OIDs are read only, most values will be written via the EWS. iii. Example of an EWS write:

1. DDPrinter_FORMID.DELL3115CN.RESTART=B,/ews/setting/setinit.htm,820001:Start

c. Translation i. OMPM can also be used to translate fields that are read from the printer. ii. Paper trays may be different for different printers.  The template serves a place for

OMPM to call the right paper tray  1. ## Read 2. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.0=OFF 3. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.1=BTM 4. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.2=TOP 5. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.3=T&B 6. ## Write 7. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.OFF=0 8. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.BTM=1 9. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.TOP=2 10. DELL3115CN.BannerSheetPosition.T&B=3

4) Registration a. Once a new template is created, it must be registered in OMPM. b. To register a template, open a command prompt c. Navigate to the template directory d. Type “oware” e. Type “registertemplate xxx.tpl” where xxx is the name of the printer

Page 6: Dell OpenManage™ Printer Manager (OMPM) Template andi.dell.com/sites/doccontent/business/solutions/... · INTRODUCTION The printer template is, in essence, a text file. It is used

6

f. Type “exit” to exit from oware, then “exit” again to exit from Command line. g. Caution!  If you create an ABC template, but ABC has already been associated to Default

Template.  You will need to delete and rediscover the printer for the new template to be associated to that printer.  Deleting that printer from OMPM will delete all its Service log, Audit trail, Print Volume, etc.

 5) Test

a. Test the new template by discovering the printer. b. Check the audit logs to ensure all fields have been collected. c. Ensure the right template is associated by looking at the snap‐in.

 d. Verify collected values are correct.

As  a  reference,  the  following pages  illustrate  a  step‐by‐step procedure on how  to modify  a  setting  in  the Dell 1720n  printer  template  and  the  validation  process  to  show  that  the modification  on  the  printer  template  is working correctly.
