Integrating product portfolio planning Client issue The client faced increased planning complexityas an increasing range of products and the ex-ploitation of new, digital business models. Theclient needed to optimize the product portfolioand to be able to model market and productchanges. Our business solution We worked with the client to define guidelinesand algorithms to support the ranking of pro-ducts and assist the simulation of product de-velopment projects. This made it possible to optimize the product portfolio and allocate in-vestment and R&D spending relative to profits.New capabilities added include agile implemen-tation of prototypes. We provided the client withan ideal integrated solution for planning theproduct portfolio, enabling the client to suc-cessfully manage increasing complexity.

Refining the financial steering conceptClient issue Globalization and future industry trends have a huge impact on the development and distri-bution of products across the world. The client requested our support planning and imple-menting the necessary changes to the client’sorganizational structure and steering concept. Our business solution We designed a new target operating model andrelated financial steering concept by operation-alizing the target operating model, describingresponsibilities and collaboration principles, and coordinating with all relevant stakeholderswithin the global organization. The client was able to use the new organization-al structure and steering concept to improve efficiency and better coordinate global effortstoward defined targets.

Exploiting robotics process automation Client issue The client wanted to improve process efficiencythough modern robotics process automation(RPA). They needed support through a detailedexploration of requirements and then imple-mentation of the target RPA state. Our business solution We first specified the target operating model, defined upskilling needs for RPA centers of excellence and RPA development experts, andconducted targeted training sessions. We alsohelped to finalize the target IT infrastructure.Together with client-side RPA analysts/bot crea-tors, bots were introduced to carry out tasks inHR (e.g. onboarding interns, prolonging workcontracts, etc.) and Finance (e.g. cost varianceanalysis, master data management, etc.) basedon Ui-Path. Further candidates for automationhave been identified and will be realized in 2018.

Defining a digital operating modelClient issue The client requested our assistance in defininga new operating model for more effective organization of all customer-facing digital activities. Our business solution We supported the client with the set up and im-plementation of a new digital operating modelacross various organizational entities (Engineer-ing, Sales & Marketing, Aftersales, and IT). Thedigital operating model enables more effectiveorganization and collaboration across the fullrange of customer-facing digital activities (connected customer incl. connected car) and harmonizes the digital platform strategy. The client was able to implement new agile approaches and ways of working across entitiesand boost digital customer services innovationthrough an (internal) accelerator.

Preparing for the future of connected servicesClient issue The client asked Deloitte to support the archi-tectural design phase for backend services toensure the technical interfaces between back-end systems and vehicles are ready to supportthe future portfolio of connected services. Our business solution We designed and planned the implementationof the client’s next-generation connectivity plat-form. This included scouting and prototypingnew technology solutions. Digital & Analytics

Tracking unsold vehiclesClient issue The existing distribution tracking systems have been imprecise and lacked key functionsto properly monitor vehicle sales. Our business solution We developed a unified system to track distribu-tion of unsold vehicles. We achieved this by de-signing and implementing a big data streamingplatform to track signals across the global fleetand match these with vehicle master data. Thesystem connects to big data hubs in the UnitedStates, China, and Europe. We also establishedbackend systems to allow easy management of geofences and create location events for de-tailed tracking of vehicles at various stages ofdistribution (factory, train, ship, etc.). The plat-form can also visualize distribution routes andprovide updates in frontend Splunk dashboardsfor user-friendly real-time tracking.

Predicting feature uptakeClient issue The logistics involved in supplying car featuresprovided by third parties can make deliverytimes longer. Pre-stocking prebuilt features atproduction sites could help to ensure timelyproduction and minimize bound capital in fea-tures. For this, the client needed reliable data to predict what customers would want. Our business solution We developed a custom advanced analytics solution using cutting-edge analytical tools. The results included over 1,500 predictions formore than 25 features, across 8 models in 12markets. Hierarchical Bayesian regressions en-able the model to adapt to very sparse or mis-sing data, allowing sensible predictions even fornewly introduced features. This powerful modelenables logistics managers to reliably plan feature stocks and facilitates lean production.

Connecting distributionClient issue Cars travel across many stations (stockyard, train, ship, truck) on their journey from factoriesto dealers. This process requires input andfeedback from a large number of stakeholdersacross a variety of systems to provide the de-tailed tracking as desired by the client. Our business solution We developed a solution based on big datastreaming technologies to integrate advancedanalytics algorithms into their chain of pro-cesses. Intuitive interfaces provide data for real-time decision-making, prompt detection ofschedule deviations and bottlenecks, and effec-tive monitoring of delivery progress. Combiningin-car sensor, map, and location event data intoa single smart solution for global distribution re-duced the processing time (to <1 ms to receivereal-time data) and accelerated tracking.

Implementing SAP S4 HanaClient issue The client’s current legacy systems for invoicingand inventory management were insufficient tocope with the complexity of the client’s evolvingprocesses, nor able to guarantee compliancewith legal and compliance requirements. Our business solution We developed an integrated system to combineinventory management, finance and accountingand invoicing based on SAP S4 HANA. We supported the client in automating businessprocesses, increasing the data quality, and facili-tating compliance with legal and corporate standards through the new system. We also defined new business models and identifiedmissing legacy functions to integrate these withexisting processes. The new system reducedcomplexity while increasing transparency andefficiency across the entire supply chain.

Defining new IT architecture for digitaltransformationClient issue The client required a defined functional targetarchitecture to take them from an automotiveOEM to providers of digital services, and thusrealize their digital transformation. Our business solution Our approach was to develop a multilayeredplatform-driven target architecture to facilitatethe client’s digital ambitions. We established various architecture management and gover-nance structures, including a company-wide architecture and API board, as well as architec-tural guidelines for product teams that wouldenable them to develop new digital productswith ease. The new IT architecture has enabledthe client to offer platform-based services to itssuppliers and distributors, kick-starting their digital transformation journey.

Creating a connected supply chainClient issue The quality of materials can deteriorate underunfavorable atmospheric conditions duringtransport. For example, corrosion is more likelyin low temperatures and high humidity. Defective materials then need to be replacedupon arrival after a manual quality check. Our business solution We implemented a system for monitoring conditions during transport along problematicroutes. Sensors continuously track luminance, shock, humidity and temperature inside thetruck. The collected data is sent into the cloud for analysis, where the root cause of the damage is determined. Drivers also receive awarning message when thresholds are breached during a trip, enabling them to takeaction to prevent (further) damage to the materials they transport.

Developing a strategy to enter the European fleet management and leasingmarketClient issue The client wanted to enter the European multi-brand fleet management and full-service leasingmarket. Our business solution A local Deloitte Captives team worked with ateam of client-side experts from the manufac-turing and financial services side to develop amarket entry and overall business strategy. The client especially desired strategic consultingon multi-brand fleet management and full-service leasing in Europe. The Deloitte Captivesteam was later supported by a pan-EuropeanDeloitte Corporate Finance team, which workedtogether to define an acquisition strategy andassess potential targets.

Separating business activities to reduce regulatory burden and enhance growthClient issue The client wanted to carve out its banking and lending activities from its captive financialservices organization to focus regulatory over-sight on banking and lending and enable further business growth. Our business solution We supported the client in developing and managing a program to separate banking andlending activities from other business lines atthe German HQ and across 18 European coun-tries. This included separating staff, IT, businessunits, legal entities, while establishing sharedservices for selected business functions. This limited the ECB’s scrutiny to the client’s bankingand lending activities in Europe while enablingthe client to focus more on equity-efficientgrowth across all other business areas.

Developing a procurement academy forthe purchasing departmentClient issue Decreasing participant numbers, poor satisfac-tion rates, and an inconsistent and outdatedtraining structure led to the client’s decision tomodernize training in the purchasing depart-ment.Our business solution We worked with the client to develop a compre-hensive training curriculum. This was basedaround a highly interactive concept, designed tobe enjoyable while producing long-term results.Building on existing knowledge and skills fromprevious training, participants acquire negotia-tion expertise relevant to their everyday workand personal development goals.

Redesigning variable executive compensationClient issue The client’s existing remuneration model for senior executives did not fully meet their re-quirements. Before changes were implemented, the client needed to assess the impact and potential costs of different proposed models. Our business solution We analyzed the compensation system, heldworkshops with different stakeholders and de-veloped a projection tool to simulate the results(and costs) of different plans, including predic-tions of future business developments. Further,we defined an example group of executives forthe client and conducted elaborate market re-search. Based on these findings, we developeda concept to redesign the existing compensa-tion system in collaboration with the client’s HRand financial controlling departments.

Setting up SAP succession managementClient issue The customer had a thorough process definedfocusing on the development and career plan-ning of their senior executives. Our business solution We worked with the client to implement an ef-fective and bespoke succession managementsolution. This was based on an employee profilesystem, which captures data to support long-term staffing decisions. Integration with the re-cruitment solution enables collaboration withheadhunters to incorporate candidates into the long-term pipeline. A presentation modulealso provides senior leadership and HR with enhanced insights into the talent pipeline, with access to live data to increase speed and trans-parency. Senior management and HR can nowconsult the succession pipeline to make well-informed decisions.

Harmonizing core IT applications in financial services worldwide Client issue The client wanted to switch to a new set of ITapplications for managing its retail loan and leasing operations and the wholesale financebusiness in 15+ countries worldwide. Our business solution The client had pre-selected three standardizedsoftware packages to be rolled-out across smalland medium-sized markets. Deloitte supportedthe client by developing a service catalog andcommon core for products, processes and system configuration. After the market rollout, local management and project teams managedtheir implementations locally with support fromHQ. The Deloitte teamworked with the client’s engineers to mitigatethreats, paying special attention to the greatestrisks. The client was able to close specific identi-fied vulnerabilities, offering peace of mind whileavoiding unnecessary risks.

Establishing needs-based access authorization for in-car ITClient issue Access to a car’s IT systems needs to be appro-priately restricted to protect personal data invehicles and to enable new connected car busi-ness models. The client required our assistancein establishing an appropriate system. Our business solution Deloitte drew on experience developing autho-rization systems for business and automotiveapplications to develop a PKI data security con-cept for data in vehicles. We had to ensure thesystem would also work in areas without mobilecoverage and access to central databases. Similarly, we also had to ensure reliability in theevent of an unforeseeable number of simulta-neous authorization requests. The system fo-cused on protecting data while opening thedoor to new connected car business models.

Assessing and improving software qualityClient issue A major automotive manufacturer asked Deloitte to perform a security assessment ofthe software development lifecycle (SDLC) atone of its service providers. The client wantedto verify what measures had been implementedto ensure secure software development pro-cesses. The client would use the results to identify and mitigate potential software risks atan early stage of the production process. Our business solution After defining the relevant areas, we conducteda security analysis of the SDLC, carrying outcontrol specification reviews, assessing their im-plementation, analyzing documentation, con-ducting employee interviews, and running work-shops. The results were consolidated, potentialrisks were identified, and finally discussed in apresentation delivered to senior management.
