Environs i s an explorat ion of how space and sett ings can

change or manipulate a v iewer ’s react ion to art . Webber ’s

perspect ive stems from his own pract ice of consuming and

col lect ing art , through which he d iscovered how his own

work can shi f t depending on what environment i s surround-

ing i t . Us ing stone and f iber sculptures against large-sca le

canvas paint ings , h is insta l lat ions wi l l inc lude both furni ture

and objects a l l made by the art ist ’s hand. The insta l lat ions

can be v iewed e i ther as whole p iece, or an accumulat ion of

curated objects . This process encourages the v iewer to pon-

der how the objects are convers ing with the insta l lat ions,

and how the objects carry that meaning outs ide the context

of the ga l lery and into the v iewers ’ personal environments .

DELOSS WEBBER

A second-generat ion rattan weaver, Del Webber not only makes h is l ive l ihood from f iber arts but a lso has been exposed to and in-f luenced by numerous ethnic forms of weaving s ince an ear ly age. He was born in 1951 and spent h is ch i ldhood in Northern Afr ica , Spain, and throughout the United States . The son of a weaver, Del learned var ious weaving techniques f rom his mother and has con-t inued to evolve as an art ist over the past 30 years . Del current ly res ides near Seatt le .

The art ist v iews h is t reatment of the stones as an express ion of reverence for nature. He takes into cons iderat ion the indiv idual qual i t ies of each stone, i ts contours , co lor, and s ize , and melds them with h is own des ign of wrapped and woven f ibers . He unites the organic with the inorganic creat ing a new form.

Del der ives h is knott ing techniques f rom tradit ional Japanese and Nat ive American basketry, wicker furni ture, loom weaving , f ly-ty ing , and naut ica l knott ing. Each stone is se lected and wrapped with a unique des ign made of var ious mater ia ls inc luding bamboo, cane, rattan, and reed. Largely inf luenced by Japanese Ikebana basketry, Del often incorporates into h is des igns tradit ional Japa-nese knott ing techniques such as butterf ly knots , insect wrap-ping , inter lock ing V knots , and sp ira l cross knots .
