Board of Directors Meeting

From the Treasurer Sheila Lane
From the Editor Linda Solomon
Annual Meeting & Elections
Date: Tuesday, December 19, 2017
Time: 7:30 PM
“A” Building
As I sit down to write this column I realize the last
time I had to compose a composition it was in college
English quite some time ago. The question was what
do I write? I decided since I am your Treasurer, I
would talk about my position and the parts that affect
you, the homeowners.
The Board has just approved a quarterly increase
of $15.00, to make the payments $510.00. Your pay-
ments keep this community looking pristine.
As you know, the coupon books for the following
year (2018) go out once a year, usually at the begin-
ning of December. All new homeowners, please be
advised that you will receive a coupon book with four
envelopes, one for each quarter of the year. Payments
received after the 10th are considered late and will
accrue a $25.00 fee. Please consider allowing me to
set you up an ACH withdrawal for you. All I would
need would be a check marked “void.” The mainte-
nance would then be deducted automatically from
your account; you can choose any date between the
first and the tenth of the month.
Another problem that occurs often is that when a
house is sold, the buyers do not receive the coupon
book from the sellers. The book needs to be trans-
ferred and the name changed on the coupon. The ac-
count number and the address stay the same.
If you are having trouble making the quarterly
payments, please contact me so I can arrange a sched-
ule so that you can meet your obligation. If you con-
tinue to be late, the next step is turning your account
over to our lawyer’s office, which will only cost you
more.
In closing let me wish all a Happy Holiday Season
and a Healthy New Year.
Another year almost over! I am beginning to
sound just like my mother, not just look like her! I
just don’t know where the time has flown and yet
when I look back, I am amazed at all that I have ac-
complished in this year and still, more that I did
NOT!
Not for lack of trying or even laziness. I think my
plate was just too full. So I took steps to make life a
little less busy. Just baby steps, mind you; but, it is a
start. Therefore, I have to thank Bonnie Wentz for
stepping up and offering to take over the handling of
vendors for this newsletter. She is now the Director
of Advertising and all ads will be arranged for by
her. My deep gratitude to her for taking that over.
I also relaxed some other projects I am involved
with by lessening the work I have to do for them. For
one, I formed a committee to oversee the layout of
one of the other publications I am involved with and
the show that I have written for the last 8 years will
now run itself . I have a stage manager and a cast
who will be determining their own roles in the show.
Oh, I’ll still direct their efforts but I won’t be doing
that much writing this year - yeah!
Why am I writing about this? Well I have decided
that I want to finally retire! I have been working
harder since I left my paying job that when I was
sweating the lesson plans and individualized lessons
for my special needs students. It’s my turn to sit back
and relax and ——-swim! I am
proud to say I am working my
way back to a mile (100
lengths) as I was doing this
summer. So, Fellow DV 4-5ers,
see you at the pool!

how to get the assistance that you need. Well, you now
have your answer your 4/5 friends are here for you.
We are going to establish block captains for your

tance. This will also give you the ability to give a family

want to be included in the list of people to be checked on
and assisted we ask that you fill out the form and it will

POPEYE
hanx and a tip of the ol’ Hatlo Hat to Ed
Clemon of Delray Villas West.
What, you may be asking yourselves, is a Hatlo Hat?
Well, Jimmy Hatlo was a syndicated cartoonist back when I
was a kid. You may remember him, too, since I assume we
were both kids at about the same time. Jimmy did a cartoon
called They’ll Do It Every Time about quirks in society and he
accepted suggestions from his readership about things people
will do every time. And, when he did, he would write a note of
thanks somewhere on the cartoon.
For instance, if Jimmy were still around and sketching the
cartoon, I would suggest he do one about Florida drivers who
very rarely use a directional when they’re going to make a turn.
Oh, sure, they might occasionally put on a blinker when they’re
in the right lane and sitting at a red light. You’re waiting anx-
iously behind them, wasting your time while they’re refusing to
turn right on red so you hit your horn, urging them to make a
move. But they wait for a green light. And then they drive
straight ahead through the light. If Jimmy used my idea, he
would note: Thanx and a tip of the ol’ Hatlo Hat to Bobby
Townsend of Delray Beach, Florida.
So what, you may ask, am I thanking Ed Clemon for? For
a suggestion, of course! It was Ed who suggested my wife
Ronnie and I go to this year’s Halloween Party dressed as Pop-
eye and Olive Oyl. Obviously, I had to be Olive Oyl because
everyone knows she was significantly taller than Popeye.
There was a tremendous amount of pressure for Ronnie
and me to come up with a brilliant idea for costumes this year.
You see, two years ago, we won the prize for best costume
when we went to the party as Sonny and Cher. Obviously, I
had to be Cher because everyone knows she was significantly
taller than Sonny. And. last year, we won the prize for most
original costume when I went to the party as Colonel Sanders
and Ronnie went as a bucket of chicken.
You know, I’m really sorry I told you about out past suc-
cesses. It will put pressure on judges to give the award to some-
one else next year. After all, the Townsends can’t dominate
every year. With that in mind, please label what I told you
about the last two years as Fake News. We didn’t win. It didn’t
happen. And I didn’t say what I said about it happening.
I’ve got to admit, though, Ronnie and I
won first prize for the best costume this
year. But since I’ve been thinking about
what we came up with for ideas the past
two years, I think we could have done
much better this year. I don’t think Ed
Clemon’s suggestion was as good as it
could have been. If Ed had been using his
head and I had been using mine, I would
have gone to the party as Popeye. And
the lovely Mrs. Townsend would have
been a can of spinach.

THE ALICE NETWORK by Kate Quinn
Historical fiction is all about blending fact and fiction. It is
much like weaving a tapestry, adding new threads to the old
without breaking the pattern until the new and the old, the real
and the fictional, are one and the same.
The fact is that during World War I there was a female spy
network called the Alice network spearheaded by Louise de
Bettignies, also known by her alias Alice Dubois. She was both
courageous and outrageous. The network was supplied by
Louise’s many sources in the Lille area of France. They sup-
plied British intelligence with information on the German front
with speed and accuracy. The major who recruited women for
the network is also a real person, Captain Cecil Aylmer Cam-
eron, known to the women he recruited as “Uncle Edward.”
The book begins with a young American, Charlotte St.
Clair, in England with her mother on a journey to Switzerland
to rid her of her “little problem.” She knows she has brought
disgrace to her family as she is unmarried and pregnant and has
no idea who the father is. But she is on another mission, un-
known to her mother. She has the name and address of a
woman, Eve Gardiner, and a restaurant in France, La Lethe.
She is determined to find out what happened to her cousin
Rose, missing since the end of World War II and presumed
dead by her family. Finding her way to Eve’s home she en-
counters a woman with misshapen hands who is both drunk
and armed with a German Luger that she points at “Charlie.”
And so the story begins.
Eve Gardiner is a woman haunted by guilt and anger, a
member of the Alice network of World War I, who spied for
the British in Lille France. Of course she knows the restaurant
that Charlie mentions. She worked there, listening in on Ger-
man conversations, passing the information on through her
contact Alice Dubois. Eve was one of the fleurs du mal that
Cameron recruited and trained at Fieldstone, England. He also
gave them all code names of flowers.
Charlie convinces Eve to help her in her search for her
cousin Rose and they set off with Eve’s driver, Finn, a veteran
of World War II. Charlie, Eve and Finn are all haunted by
things from their past, people they were not able to save and
the guilt they feel about their failures. Equipped with Eve’s
ever ready Luger, the trio travel through Lille, Limoges and
Grasse, old French towns that the author describes in exquisite
detail.
The Alice Network jumps deftly and briskly between two
tumultuous periods in European history: 1947 in the aftermath
of World War II. and 1915. In the heat of the first, the novel
links the two women across time, as it becomes clear that
something from Eve’s dark past lingers in Charlie’s present.
Quinn’s novel also gives us tragedies, too, both from war and
from pursuing the ghosts and demons of the past. Charlie is an
entertaining narrator and Eve is a complex and rewarding .
character. Both women are courageous in their search for the
truth, no matter how painful. All of the characters are broken in
different ways. Eve drinks to deal with her nightmares and
guilt; Finn gets into fights and ends up in prison when he is
overcome with images from the past; and Charlie engages in
sexual encounters to numb her pain. As Hemingway once
stated, “The world breaks everyone and afterwards some are
strong at the broken places.”
Fans of historical fiction, spy fiction and thrilling drama will
enjoy the Alice Network.

MEET THE CANDIDATES The following four candidates are running for the three
vacancies on the 2018 Plat 4/5 Board.. Here is an opportunity
to hear what they have to say about their candidacy in their own
words.
Alan Kaplan I would like to be considered to be
elected to the board of directors of the
Delray Villas Plat 4/5 Homeowners Asso-
ciation. I have previously served on the
board of directors in my Kansas commu-
nity. I was treasurer and a member of the
landscape committee.
I also served as Vice President of my
synagogue, Hebrew Congregation, and
was next in line to become President prior t o
moving to Florida. I also served as President of the Mid-Kansas
Jewish Federation whose responsibility to support the Jewish
people and the community at large through charitable programs
for the elderly and the indigent, as well as the State of Israel.
Currently, I have volunteered to act as the chair of the upcom-
ing Plat 4/5 garage sale. We are looking forward to a successful
first time experience.
If elected to the Board, I will serve in any capacity as needed.
The board is vital to the success of the homeowners association.
I believe I can be of value by using my previous knowledge.
Being an active volunteer is vital in any community. I would be
honored to serve. Thank you for your consideration.
Hal Lechner My wife Robin and I moved to south
Florida 151/2 years ago. We originally
moved into Coral Lakes and during our time
there, I volunteered for and was elected
building captain. That position made me
completely responsible for the running of
the building and making sure that all 32
units were taken care of according to board
rules an regulations.
I am a retired NYC Board of Education
health and physical education teacher. I
coached the varsity football team as well as being a voluntary
advisor for SING, which was a contest between the freshman,
sophomore, junior and senior classes in an original song and
dance competition. During my years living in New York, I was
a volunteer paramedic for 11 years. I was also president of my
ambulance corps for 3 years. When we moved to Florida, I vol-
unteered and became head of the youth bowling league in sev-
eral bowling centers.
I am not just looking to volunteer again for something else to
do. Plat 4/5 looks beautiful, neat and clean. This is due to the
hard and conscientious work of the board and cooperation of the
residents. I would love to be part of keeping our community that
way by serving on our board of directors. Towards that end, I
served on the Plat 4/5 inspection committee and hope to con-
tinue giving my service to the community by becoming a mem-
ber of the board. Thank you for your kind attention.
Russel Mayer Hello, Delray Villas residents. I would like to
tell you a little bit about myself.
I have lived in Florida for approximately
seven years; three years, as a snowbird, in Plat
1, and then moved from Michigan in 2012, into
Plat 4/5 as a permanent resident, where I have
lived for the past five years.
For the past three years I have been involved with the Citizen
Observer Patrol (COP), which I enjoy very much. Working in
this way has made me familiar with so many of the residents
that live here, as well as helping me to be aware of what is going
on in our community.
Last year I was asked to shadow Butch Herbst, who sat on
the Board in charge of Maintenance, in order to learn the intrica-
cies of his responsibilities. Butch was planning on retiring and
needed someone to fill in until election time when some person
would be elected. While doing this, I had a chance to meet so
many of the people here in our community. Being able to help
people and keeping our community looking it's best is very re-
warding, even though the job itself is very time consuming. I
also had the opportunity of meeting many residents in our subdi-
vision, so the people are quite familiar with me.
I would like to continue in this position, but I need your vote.
Election time is only a few weeks away and for me to remain
doing this, I need your support. When you see the name, Russel
Mayer, on the ballot, I would appreciate your putting a check
mark next to it. Thank you.
Bill Yesowitch I am running for the board after
having served on the board for a one
year term. This past year, I acted as
Chair of the Interview Committee
and as Parliamentarian.
My wife, Judy, and I moved to
Delray Villas in 2011 from Louisville, Kentucky. In Louisville, I
was a practicing attorney for thirty years. We still go back to
Kentucky to visit our family and friends; but, our heart is now
here in our new community, Delray Villas.
I have served on a variety of boards in various capacities and
as president of our local Rotary Club three times. I also served
as president and treasurer of our local religious organization,
Congregation Anshei Sfard as well as chair of the Buechel KY
Business Association and Neighborhood Association. I look
forward to continuing to serve this community and ask for your
vote. Thank you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don’t forget to cast your ballot for the person(s) of your
choice on December 18, 2017. The A building will be open for
your convenience at 6:30 PM and the Annual Meeting will take
place at 7:30 PM.
For those of you who are unable to attend, you will have re-
ceived an absentee ballot which should be mailed or dropped off
at Bernie Rosenberg’s porch.
