Delta has taken anotherstep in its efforts to get fed-eral funding to dredge localchannels of the Fraser Riverwith the release of an eco-nomic impact assessment.

“Hopefully this willshake a few people up andget the job done,” saidCoun. Ian Paton of thereport from InterVistasConsulting that offers abusiness case for dredging.

The report reveals a sig-nificant economic impactassociated with LadnerHarbour and the surround-ing river channels: 285 jobs,$8.3 million in wages, $14million in gross domesticproduct and more than $51million in economic output.

That economic activityalso generates significanttax revenues for all levelsof government: nearly $2.2million in federal tax rev-enue, more than $990,000for the province and about$744,000 for Delta.

“I think the numbers thatwe have here are prettycompelling,” said Coun.Bruce McDonald. “It’s animportant report, an impor-tant issue and we reallyneed to move forward onthis.”

The report will be sentto a number of federal andprovincial ministers alongwith a request for $4 mil-lion in dredging funding.

The silt buildup in thesecondary channels of theFraser River has been anissue in Ladner for severalyears.

The dredging of theFraser used to be handledby the federal government, however, the secondarychannels have not beencleared in over a decadeand the build up is causing

problems.Until 1998, dredging of

all channels was a federalresponsibility. In 1999, theport authority took overdredging only the mainnavigational channel. Sincethen, silt has been buildingup in the many secondarychannels.

Sometimes, during lowtides, there is only a fewfeet of water covering thebottom of the river and onmany occasions over thelast few years boats tryingto move in or out of LadnerHarbour, or any of the otherlocal channels, have gotstuck in the silt for severalhours until the water levelrises.

Float homes also riskgoing aground unevenly, which can cause damageto the structures and pose asafety risk to those inside.

Since 2009, Delta hasbeen working with theLadner Sediment Group

and Port Metro Vancouverto find funding to addressthe sediment problem.Since then the issue hasbeen brought up numeroustimes with various levels ofgovernment.

Members of the LadnerSediment Group, MayorLois Jackson and MLAVicki Huntington haveall made appeals to bothprovincial and federal rep-resentatives for funding tohelp deal with the sediment.

As recently as late lastyear, Jackson, along withPaton and chief administra-tive officer George Harvie, met with officials from theDepartment of Fisheriesand Oceans and the B.C.Ministry of Transportation.

Last year, the munici-pality and Port MetroVancouver committed $2million each towards dredg-ing. However, those fundsare contingent on the fed-eral and provincial govern-

ments providing funding aswell.

The cost to dredge theharbour and secondarychannels is estimated at$8 million. Once the ini-tial dredging is complete, maintenance is anticipatedto cost around $500,000annually.

Last month, Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay announced$7.3 million in funding forrepairing and maintainingfishing harbours in B.C.

Projects funded underthe program include wharfrepairs at Ladysmith, PortEdward and two Richmondsites, as well as dredging atSteveston and other FraserRiver sites.

However, none of thatmoney was allocated fordredging in Delta.

Findlay said the fundswere a continuation of aprogram for dredging anddock repairs for fishing

harbours in the provinceand dredging of the FraserRiver’s secondary channelswas not included in thatprogram.

“That’s a separate proj-ect and one that I’ve beenworking on,” she said.

Findlay said she hasbeen working with Delta,Richmond and Port MetroVancouver, as well as theprovincial and federal gov-ernments, to find a solution.

“It’s a huge issue and onethat I’ve been working on.”

Sean McGill, Delta’sdirector of human resourcesand corporate planning, recommended the report bedistributed to the federaland provincial governmentswith a request for fundingto match the $4 millionalready committed.

“The InterVistas studyprovides a strong businesscase for dredging LadnerHarbour and nearby chan-nels,” McGill said.

Fiscal case made for dredging

She said the company islooking at moving into theTilbury industrial area andsome employees now haveconcerns about the SouthFraser Perimeter Road andthe fact that it has beendesigned with intersectionsinstead of interchangesthrough the River Roadstretch.

“These traffic issuesstunt our growth here inDelta,” she said.

Heather Colls fromMothers Against PowerPoles continued the group’slobbying efforts to have thehigher voltage power polesin Tsawwassen removed

and the lines buried andshielded. She also told thepremier that many in thecommunity are concernedabout the SFPR and the lossof agricultural land.

Others in the crowdraised concerns about socialassistance funding for low-income individuals andfamilies, a lack of fundingand resources for familieswith children with specialneeds, and cuts to educationfunding.

The answer to many ofthe concerns, Clark said, isa strong economy.

“The only way we can dothat is to continue to grow

the economy,” she said, add-ing that once the provincebalances the budget thegovernment can start look-ing at where to allocatefunds.

Clark has been holdingtown hall-style meetingsthroughout the provincesince last summer. She wasin Ladner last August for ameeting with constituentsas well as business andcommunity leaders. Someforums have been open toall, while others she hasmade women-only events.

“There’s a reason I dothis,” she said. “I notice thatconversations happen differ-ently when it’s just womenin the room.”

The premier said she

holds the meetings as away to work at rebuildingtrust between the public andgovernment, something, she said, that took a big hitafter the announcement andimplementation of the HST.

“People were justifiablymad about the HST,” shesaid.

Outside the hotel, asmall group of protestersfrom the Musqueam FirstNation gathered hopingto bring their message tothe premier. The band hasbeen lobbying the govern-ment for several months tostop construction work inVancouver’s south end inan area that is part of anhistorical aboriginal burialground and village site.

Two Lower Mainlandports, including Deltaport, had to be evacuated lastThursday afternoon aftersomeone called in a bombthreat, which turned out tobe a hoax.

At around 4 p.m., some-one called the VancouverFraser Port Authority headoffice and alleged therewas an explosive at a portauthority terminal in MetroVancouver, but did notspecify which one, said

Delta police Staff Sgt. HarjSidhu.

“So they notified us andthey initiated their securityprotocol, so the ports wereevacuated,” he said.

After the terminals wereevacuated, police moved into search for any possibleexplosives. Once the portswere cleared, employeeswere allowed to return towork.

Delta now has legisla-tion in place to regulateusage of Ladner Harbourand the Elliott Streetwharf.

Civic politiciansrecently approved a newbylaw regulating the useof the wharf.

Earlier this year, theCorporation of Delta tookover the operation of thewharf, which was previ-ously leased to KaymaranAdventure Tours, withthe aim of making it fullyaccessible to the public, including offering short-term boat moorage.

“The bylaw reallygives the municipality thepower to regulate derelictvessels and unpaid moor-age,” said Ken Kuntz,Delta’s director of parks, recreation and culture.

The municipality tookover the operation of thewharf June 1 and did nothave any bylaws in placeto assist in regulatingusage.

“The process to datehas largely relied on thegood nature of users and,as a last resort, courtaction to resolve issues,”Kuntz stated in a report tocouncil.

“These approaches, while generally effective, can be cumbersome andexpensive when dealingwith chronic offenders.”

The bylaw will helpmanage inappropriateactions, such as wastedumping or people livingaboard a vessel.

Delta council hasapproved a series of landswaps with the school dis-trict.

Civic politicians haveagreed to move forwardwith an exchange of 10sites throughout the munici-pality.

Over the years, theCorporation of Delta andthe school district have co-managed the properties asa result of blurred historicalboundaries.

Eight of the propertiesare established school orpark sites where the owner-ship is inconsistent with thecurrent usage — a num-ber of sites owned by themunicipality form part of aschool use and, conversely,a number of school sites areutilized as public parks.

“The exchange of theseeight properties will proper-ly align use and ownershipwithout either party gainingor losing overall land area,”said Ken Kuntz, Delta’sdirector of parks, recreationand culture, in a report tocouncil.

A ninth site, the oldresource centre at 96thStreet and Highway 10, willbe consolidated under the

district’s ownership.The municipality will

purchase the final site, 20acres of farmland locatedon 56th Street, which wasformerly the Tsawwassenschool reserve, for $1.2million.

The property is currentlyleased for soil-based farm-ing and will continue to be,along with an adjacent par-cel of farmland.

A restrictive covenantwill be placed on the site tosecure it for long-term soil-based farming.

“This is a positiveexchange on all accounts,”said Mayor Lois Jackson.“I’m very pleased we wereable to guarantee farming atthe Tsawwassen site locatedwithin the AgriculturalLand Reserve and providethe necessary assurances toSnow Farms in support oftheir farming operation.”

Both Delta and theschool district are in theprocess of taking the neces-sary steps to formally com-plete the land exchange.

“The exchange demon-strates a successful partner-ship and progression inaction as we define owner-ship and responsibilities ofvarious sites,” said Deltaschool board chair DaleSaip.

To most people, retire-ment is a good word.

It speaks, perhaps, togardening. To travel. Toreading books, to masteringchess, to cruising to Alaska,to going to night school tolearn a second language.

To spending more timewith the grandkids.

It is a good word, asnear as I can tell, but not toone curious segment of thepopulation.

Rock stars.Increasing numbers of

rock stars, for whateverreason, are opting not tohang up the shingle at 62or 65 and join lawn bowl-ing leagues. Your typicalaging rock star is not apt tosay: “That’s it, thank good-ness! Now I can go to nightschool! And spend moretime with the grandchil-dren!”

Perhaps some do. ButI can think of many who

don’t.Why, just recently, the

Rolling Stones announcedthey were celebrating their50th anniversary, and thenhinted about a coming tour.

Now I don’t know howold the Rolling Stones are,but I think they must be“getting upthere,” as theysay. Let’s justsay they didn’tstart makingmusic whenthey were fiveor six.

I guess theymust still behaving fundoing whatthey’re doing, even though there has to bea lot less jump in Jumpin’Jack Flash. Either that, orthey’re still saving up fora first-class cabin on thatcruise to Alaska.

Then there’s Tina Turner, who was still doing her on-stage stuff when other folksher age were, oh, sitting inthe audience and recallingwhen they’d seen her 40years earlier, and then goinghome to drink Earl Grey teaand finish the newspaper

crossword.There have been the likes

of Robert Plant and StevenTyler and Roger Daltrey, none of whom were appar-ently focusing on Freedom55.

This isn’t to say, ofcourse, that I’m not in awe

of peoplewho canstill crankit out whenthey’re notexactlyspringchickens.I’m alsonot say-ing thatlife oughtto change

dramatically when someonehits a certain milestone.

I just think it’s interestingto consider that some rockstars — The Stones, let’ssay — started out at a timewhen eggs cost 32 cents adozen, and are still at it ahalf century later.

Retirement? Not forthese guys.

Retirement — that’s forme. It’s still a few years off,of course. But the thoughtjust makes me sing.

Rockers sing differenttune about retirement

Increasing numbersof rock stars, forwhatever reason, areopting not to hangup the shingle at 62or 65 and join lawnbowling leagues.

Ladner’s Joanne Lechnerrecently won TourismRichmond’s StevestonVisitor Centre’s most out-standing pie competition forher balsamic black pepperstrawberry rhubarb pie.

The win was a sweet onegiven she and her husbandMorgan Lechner, bothchefs, just launched a ven-ture called batch.food. — acompany offering gourmetfrozen meals to familiesand professionals too busyto prepare healthy mealsthemselves.

“We are really busy par-ents ourselves and we don’tlike store-bought fast foodor processed food for ourkids so we started makingour own healthy frozenfood,” said Joanne, who hasan eight- and five-year-old.

The concept behindbatch.food. is simple.People go to the websiteand check out the menuselections, order online

and the food is deliveredon Mondays, or availablefor pick up from their sitenear Richmond’s Ikea onFridays.

“I had an idea years agothat came from a similarprogram at a Delta hotelabout packaging whole-some food,” said Morgan.“Joanne and I thoughtwhy don’t we freeze fresh, healthy food for people whodon’t have time to cookthemselves but like to eatnourishing meals.”

The couple initiallybegan trying out recipesin their home kitchen, andselling their products tofriends and family. Theyreceived such a greatresponse they moved intotheir new location in June.

“So far, we have beenselling online and throughword-of-mouth,” saidJoanne, adding she has onepart-time cook helping herright now. “People typicallyorder one to two weeks inadvance.”

They offer four to six

new menu items everyweek, entrees such asground turkey bolognese, braised pork ribs, glutenfree panko crusted chickenfingers, baked or barbecuedling cod and Thai greenchicken curry.

Both come with years ofexperience in the hospitalityindustry. The two met whileworking as chefs in Banff.

When Morgan isn’thelping his wife at batch.food., he’s the executivechef at the Delta VancouverAirport Hotel, a post he’sheld for the last four years. He began his foray intothe industry as a teenagergrowing up in Victoria.

He then headed to Banffto take his apprenticeshipand train with some ofthat city’s top internationalchefs. Morgan has sinceworked in many presti-gious hotels, including theRimrock Resort Hotel,Banff Springs Hotel and theEmpress Hotel.

Joanne studied culinaryarts at Malaspina College

before moving to Banffto complete her Red SealChef Certification. Shehas worked as a chef in tophotels across the country, and as the pastry chef at theRiver Rock Casino Resortfor five years before retir-ing as a product designer ata major cake manufacturer.

“I like all aspects ofcooking but I love thevisual of desserts,” addedJoanne.

batch.food. touts itselfas offering restaurant-stylegourmet meals, using fresh, local and sustainable sea-food and meats, as well asproduce and fruits at a frac-tion of the price you’d payin a restaurant.

For example, a one kilo-gram portion of Thai redprawn curry dish, completewith roti and baby potatoes(serves four), will cost $18,or four Wasabi black beanboneless, skinless chickenbreasts cost $17.

Industrialshortageon a roll

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

Like a lot in life, land use is one ofthose things that tends to roll downhill.

There’s a growing concern in theLower Mainland these days that we’rerunning out of industrial land, that wewill soon face an undesirable situationwhere companies that want to set up shophere won’t be able to find the propertiesthey require.

This lack of industrial land meansthey’ll be forced to locate in other juris-dictions, which would have negativeramifications for our economy.

This would be a significant problem ifwe were actually perilously close to run-ning out of industrial land. That’s not thecase, however. We’re simply lacking landthat’s industrially zoned.

Although there’s no getting aroundthe fact the amount of land we have atour disposal is finite, how we classify itis most certainly a societal decision. Upto this point our political leaders haveallotted a certain percentage for indus-trial purposes, just as they have done forhousing, commercial, recreation, agricul-ture and the like.

It’s a pie and we slice it as we deemappropriate. Right now the piece cut forindustry isn’t necessarily a match for theappetite of that segment, a situation thatcan be rectified by a single, or perhapsmultiple, strokes of the knife.

It’s most definitely a political decisionand it’s where the rolling down the hillanalogy comes into play.

Land already zoned for residentialand commercial purposes is too valu-able, even for the economic prowess ofindustry, and land designated for publicuse, places like schools, parks and natu-ral areas, is obviously off limits. Thatpretty much leaves farmland, which haslong been near the bottom of the land usehierarchy.

Although vital to our survival for itsfood-producing capabilities, farmlandhas been the place we’ve looked to overthe years when we’ve needed to develophomes, shops, schools, parks and otheruses.

The Agricultural Land Reserve haslimited that practice in recent decades, but I suspect it will still be the placepolitical leaders go to when corporateinterests turn up the heat.

There’s absolutely no denying thatheading down that path puts us on a slip-pery slope, but at the same time it canbe a bit like choosing between your ownkids: Do you go with the food-producingone or the job-producing one?

The latter has prevailed in the past, sodon’t be surprised if we see land use roll-ing downhill yet again at some point inthe near future.

They have their treaty landsand money to invest. They foreseethousands of homes, mega-mallsand port-related industries, alldelivering economic rewards forthe Tsawwassen First Nation andits members. But this appealingvision seems increasingly blurred, possibly less bright.

They promised Metro Vancouver4,000 new homes by 2041, yetrecently forecast: “In the com-ing years TFN expects more than800 homes to be built.” They haveagreements with two major shop-ping mall developers. One is adver-tising for lessees, but I find noreport identifying either anchors ortenants. The other makes no men-tion of TFN in his website’s list ofprojects and I find no advertising.

Houses, mega-malls and indus-tries all require utility services.Among the essential services thatTFN must provide to support theiranticipated developments are sani-tary sewers.

Their small sewer plant is a top-of-the-line tertiary plant. “Tertiary”refers to the plant’s three sequentialprocesses that yield effluent of thehighest purity. Discharging efflu-ent between TFN’s inner and outerdikes was permissible under federalregulations when the plant wasbuilt, but provincial regulationsnow apply and the discharge shouldbe out in deep water. Perhaps mostworrisome, the plant has limited orno capacity to service additionaldemand.

TFN and B.C. Ferries willtogether connect to Delta’s sewer.Delta agrees to share with them, but TFN’s share will be for onlyfive years and their maximum flowrate is limited to 17 litres/second.That equals only five per centof Tsawwassen’s estimated 2012maximum rate.

Based upon a consultant’s esti-mate of Delta’s peak 2041 wet-weather sewer demand, Delta’sengineering staff reported: “...there is no reserve capacity avail-able for Tsawwassen First Nation’slong term sewage needs.” Councilunanimously endorsed the reportand directed that copies be sent toTFN and others.

Hopefully a shift in demandpeak, or an affordable upgradeof Delta’s system, can accommo-date limited TFN ongoing needsbecause the alternatives may be

prohibitively expensive.Metro Vancouver’s Lions Gate

and Iona primary sewage plantsneed to be upgraded to provide sec-ondary treatment. The cost is esti-mated to be $1.4 billion. To avoidmassive utility tax increases forhomeowners and businesses, pres-sure is on senior governments tohelp with funding. TFN may findthis an inopportune time to seekhelp in replacing or supplementingan otherwise adequate plant solelyto enable their economic ventures.

Would anyone invest in a house,mega-mall or industrial facilitywithout assurance of continuoussewer service? TFN must providelong-term utility certainty; other-wise their economic developmentaspirations will surely be dashed.

Should TFN conclude that itcannot provide the services theiradvertised developments demand, they should figure out what theymight practically achieve with theresources, services and supportavailable to them. It seems to methe most rewarding solution mightbe achieved through cooperationwith Delta. TFN should not over-look the beneficial or detrimentalimpact of their development onDelta if they need Delta’s support.

The outcome may be more mod-est, but hopefully it will be bothrewarding and achievable. I wishthem success.

Limited sewer capacity mightforce TFN to downsize plans

Editor:As an old Salvation

Army man, I am very con-cerned at the way we havetreated Monty Robinson, who happened to be caughtin unfortunate circumstanc-es, first with the incident atYVR, and then this tragicand unfortunate trafficfatality.

What concerns me mostis the sad commentary:“That he went home justtwo blocks away with hisyoung children, and hadtwo drinks of vodka delib-erately because as a policeofficer he knew he couldbeat a drunk driving rap.”

Two things come to mymind when hearing such astatement.

A far more compellingreason, from my perspec-tive, would have been thatas a father, his first thoughtwould have been to protecthis children from furthertrauma.

The first thought of anyfather would have been toget your children out of

there, and since he was onlytwo Tsawwassen blocksaway, he went home and gothis children out of the spec-tator sport accidents havebecome as we want to knowall the ghoulish details.

The second thing thatcomes to mind is thosetwo shots of vodka. As aformer ships officer withlifesaving at sea training, and no doubt first aid train-ing is very much a part ofmodern police officer’sinventory, Robinson wouldhave had sufficient skill andknowledge to know you donot administer alcohol to aperson who has experiencedshock. And there’s no doubtRobinson would have beenin shock as he had just beeninvolved in a fatal accident.

A person in shock doesstrange things, and is notreally thinking straight. Aska military doctor who seesand deals with shocked sol-diers and he/she will con-firm that humans in shockare not themselves.

From a first aid/lifesav-

ing aspect, Robinson wouldhave known that you do notdeliberately go against thatinstinctive training to drinkany alcohol of any kind. Yethe did drink, so the levelof shock had to have beenpretty severe.

The question really is:What would you have done,or I have done, under simi-lar circumstances? I guessif you were an alcoholic, how would you have acted? As a father of young chil-dren, with your home justup the road a little, whatwould you have done?

Lapse of judgment onRobinson’s part? Poor judg-ment, yes, but what wouldyou have done under similarcircumstances?

Is Robinson being railedupon because he is of nativeheritage? Is there an ele-ment of racism? It is a trag-ic set of affairs, but surelyif we really look at it, do wenot have a duty to save theman first if we want to savehis soul?

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Re: What’s the need for

shop to go upscale?, letterto the editor, July 18

It is curious to me thatsome people in South Deltahave made comments aboutrecent changes at HospiceCottage Charity Shoppe. It astounds me that peoplefeel entitled to commentabout how the businessshould be run.

It would be ridiculous togo into a local retailer andstart complaining to them

about prices. But for somereason, it seems completelyacceptable for customers todo so at a thrift store.

The name change wasmainly to bring awarenessto the cause, highlightingthat it is, in fact, a charitythat is using the revenue tosupport hundreds of fami-lies a year in end of lifecare. Some items generous-ly donated by the commu-nity are of very high qualityand value. Many peoplechoose Hospice Cottage to

donate their precious thingsto because they believe inthe cause.

It would be a disser-vice to those donating, aswell as to Delta Hospice’sservices, to price valuableitems at a mere fraction oftheir worth, just because itis expected at a thrift store.Higher priced items at thestore reflect their muchhigher value. Assumingeverything should be withina certain minimal pricerange at a thrift store is

exactly the reason for therecent name change.

It is well known thatpeople come from acrossthe Lower Mainland to shopat the Cottage. Among theregular patrons are consign-ment store owners, furnitureup-cyclers and flea marketsellers who purchase itemsto re-sell. The prices havebeen extremely low andeveryone has benefitedgreatly from the store basi-cally giving things away.

Volunteers work hard to

price as consistently andfairly as possible, and itemscontinue to remain wellbelow their retail value.Complaints are more aboutchange than unfair pricing.People are used to gettingincredible deals, and aredisappointed that somethings are actually pricedfairly now.

As a volunteer, I see thecountless mattresses, soiledand stained couches, andother garbage left for dis-posal at the store. Despitethe signs, it has become afree garbage dump for somepeople. Dumping fees arenot free for the non-profit— they pay the same aseveryone else. Higher dis-posal fees only drive theneed to raise prices.

Most despicable was thepersonal attack on NancyMacey, citing egotism anda personal raise for thereason for the changes. Youcouldn’t be further from thetruth.

She independently beganDelta Hospice over 20 yearsago and worked without payfor many years.

Ask anyone who knowsher — the dedication, pas-sion and commitment tohospice she displays isbeyond amazing. As anexecutive director of theorganization, she spendscountless hours workingalongside the volunteers. She knows that every pennyearned at the store goesdirectly to caring for peoplethat are dying, as well assupporting their families.

Over 180 volunteersoperate the store and sev-

eral part-time employeessupport the volunteer’swork. I find it humourousthat people question thefinancial decisions of some-one who has also created afinancially self-sustainingnon-profit organization, including developing andrunning Hospice Cottage, overseeing hundreds ofvolunteers and building an$8.5 million medical facil-ity and support centre.

Delta Hospice does notdepend on governmentcontributions to operate itsorganization. It is unique inthat it raises 90 per cent ofits funding to operate theCentre for Supportive Careso that anyone can accessservices and nobody has topay a fee for service.

As well, Delta Hospicefunds all capital, equipmentand maintenance expensesat the Hospice Residence.(Fraser Health providesfunding for care for the10 beds, which are eachapproximately $700 cheaperper day than their equiva-lent palliative care bed in ahospital.)

I am positive those whohave complained about pric-es at Hospice Cottage havenot experienced any of theservices that Delta Hospiceprovides. Your greatest hopeshould be that if you, orsomeone you know, ends upsuffering from a life-threat-ening illness, you would befortunate to receive the sup-port from Delta Hospice, brought to you mainlyby the Hospice CottageCharity Shoppe.

Many valid reasons why Cottage has evolved

Editor:I’d like to remind all ani-

mal lovers not to feed strayanimals.

My orange-and-whiteindoor cat has been lost forover a week, and I am abso-lutely certain someone iskindly feeding him — he’snot able to hunt and feedhimself.

If that well-meaning ani-mal lover had instead invit-ed him inside with kibbleand then brought him to theshelter, his microchip wouldhave brought him home.

If you see a cat in yourneighbourhood you havenever seen before, assumehe is lost. If he comes toyou for food, bring him tothe shelter.

Many animals have tat-toos or chips that willreunite them with familiesthat are probably desper-ately searching for them.

Remember, also, thatcat collars are designed to“break away” if they catchon anything, for safety soa cat without a collar is notnecessarily a cat without ahome.

Before adopting a stray,do your due diligence. Takeit to the local shelter or vetand check to see if it has amicrochip. Check vancou-ver.craigslist.com for lostpet ads.

Think how you wouldfeel if your cat never camehome.

Name: Lindsay Age: 20 Occupation: Summer Day Camp Leader

What is the activity? Leading children ages 6-12 in games, sports, craftsand drama in summer day camps.

Where and when does this take place? Throughout Delta in July andAugust, but registration starts May17th. There are sites in North Delta,Ladner and Tsawwassen.

How often do you participate? The programs run Monday-Friday in Julyand August.

How long have you been involved? Summer of 2011 was my first yearand I hope to return for the second time this summer.

Why did you get involved with this activity? When it was time to applyfor summer positions, I decided to get involved with the Delta Parks andRecreation Summer Playgrounds Program because of its strong reputationfor successful camps. I heard wonderful things from returning staff aboutthe team of leaders and the valuable experience they gained from theirtime running the summer program. The summer leader position providesme with an avenue to explore my interest in the area of education in anenvironment that is conducive to the field I am interested in.

What do you like best about this activity? I enjoy the fast pace thataccompanies working with children; there are plenty of things going onwhich keep me on my toes. The activities and groups of children changeeach week and that requires flexibility, creativity and quick thinking.

How does it benefit your life? The diverse group of leaders andchildren means there are opportunities to test the boundaries of mypersonal leadership skills. The Summer Day Camps setting demands aproactive approach to work situations which translate into my approach toacademics, athletics and everyday life.

What other things do you do to keep active? I play softball for UBC andtrain on and off field throughout the year. In the summer, I play softball forthe Delta Heat Women’s team. I incorporate a variety of running, biking, yoga and other outdoor activities I enjoy into my weekly routine.

Did you know that Summer Day Camps are a wonderful way for kids tostay active while maintaining language and creative skills and having fun?Summer registration begins on May 17th. You can register on-line atdeltareg.ca or by phone at 604.952.3000. An on-line, interactive guide isavailable through www.corp.delta.bc.ca. The latest accomplishment inDavid Rutherford’s decoratedhockey career couldn’t be moreappropriate.

The 25-year-old from Ladnerwas given possession of the KellyCup for the weekend, thanks tohis part in helping the FloridaEverglades win the East CoastHockey League championshipback in May. The trophy is ironi-cally the same name as his latefather Kelly — a longtime minorhockey referee and volunteer wholost his battle to cancer exactlyeight years ago. It providedRutherford the perfect opportu-nity to invite an estimated 200relatives and friends to the familyproperty on Arthur Drive to helpcelebrate his dad’s life one moretime.

Perhaps the biggest smile ofthe party belonged to his mom,Tracy, another former longtimevolunteer with South DeltaMinor Hockey, who couldn’t bein Florida when her son won thechampionship.

“This is mostly about (thetrophy) being called the KellyCup and is more for my mom, family and friends than me,”explained Rutherford. “The weirdthing about it is last summer mymom and I for the very first timeagreed to spread (my dad’s) ashesout in the ocean.

“It just seemed really fittingthat a year later something namedKelly was coming home. Tosee her smile today was just souncanny.”

Rutherford has made winninghockey championships a habit.

It all started as a 15-year-oldcall-up player with the Delta IceHawks and continued on to high-er levels of junior hockey withthe Surrey Eagles (BCHL cham-pionship) and the Spokane Chiefs(WHL and Memorial Cup titles). It continued in 2011 as a memberof the Central Hockey League’sBossier-Shreveport Muddogs. Now he hopes his “Midas Touch”continues in the AmericanHockey League after just sign-ing a two-way contract with the

Charlotte Checkers — an affiliateof the Carolina Hurricanes.

As much has Rutherford hasenjoyed these long post-seasonruns, it’s still about the burningdesire of realizing his full poten-tial and playing at the highestlevel possible.

He has been proving peoplewrong since his minor hockeydays in South Delta when he wascounted out for not being bigenough or having the necessaryspeed to be a top level forward.

Rutherford is coming offthe best season of his brief procareer, having posted 55 points, including 25 goals in 57 gameswith Florida. He added 12 pointsin 17 playoff games. He has re-dedicated himself to his off-sea-son training, adding 20-pounds tohis 5-foot-9 frame.

“I can’t even tell you howmany times I have been told Iwas too small,” he smiled. “It’salways in the back of my mindabout trying to move forward. Ifind ways to keep winning buteach year I keep getting a littlebetter too.

“I made huge improvements tomy game this past season and Ithink the opportunities are end-less for me being in Carolina’ssystem. We will see what hap-pens but I have regrouped every-thing by changing my agent and(off-season) trainer. Everythingseems to have fallen together.”

Rutherford admits the bestthing to happen to his hockeycareer was the day the VancouverGiants traded him to the SpokaneChiefs. Up until that point every-thing was accomplished so closeto home. It opened his eyes toanother world.

Rutherford turned pro with theCharlotte Checkers of the ECHLwhere he was traded before theseason was over but met his cur-rent girlfriend and soon-to-befiancé Stephanie Wilson. She hasbeen by his side since and willbe reunited with her family withRutherford’s career taking himback to Charlotte, except thistime to play at a higher level.

“It almost took living on myown to really understand what mycareer needed,” he said. “It’s been

whirlwind to say the least by Iowe a lot for what (Giants GM)Scott Boner and (Giants headcoach) Don Hay did for me.

“Stephanie and I have almostbeen together for four years andher family is pretty happy we’recoming back there. A lot of girlslike hockey players but the neat

thing is she knows nothing abouthockey.”

What continues to driveRutherford’s career is the memo-ry of his father and how he wouldbe so proud today. That’s whatmade Saturday’s celebration sospecial.

“He gave me every opportunity

to succeed,” he added. “I thinkI would have made a few bet-ter decisions if he was still herebut the greatest battle I learnedwas him fighting cancer. He wasgiven six months and he made itsix years. You need to know deepdown if you want something ornot.”
