  • The Paridon Horticulturalwarehouse in East Deltawas a busy place last week.Service club volunteers

and other helpers set upshop there to put togetherover 600 food hampersfor Deltassists annualChristmas hamper program.Hundreds of people lent

a hand to sort and deliverthe hampers, noted long-time volunteer organizerand Ladner Legion memberGeorge Koka.Koka said local schools,

with lots of work from stu-dents and teachers, donateplenty of food while volun-teers purchase the rest.Fellow Ladner Legion

member Brian Rainbow, who has been involved withthe hamper program forthe last 20 years, is alwayshappy to help out.Its a good experience.

Every year I plan on doingit as long as I can, he said.Rainbow, who started out

by delivering hampers, saidhe saw how much the kidsand their families enjoyedreceiving the food for theholidays, adding that spe-cial treats like candy canesget put on the top. That just keeps you

going every year. Its a goodthing. Deltassist is greatand the service clubs, we allchip in and work our bunsoff.Food that doesnt get

used for the hampers goesto local food banks andsoup kitchens, he noted.

Weve heard of familieswhose cupboards are barewhen the volunteers showup with a hamper, saidDeltassist executive directorDoug Sabourin. Thanksto a lot of people donatingfood and money, we areable to give these families

a little comfort at a specialtime of year.Mike Hatfield, a member

of the TOOBs service club, has been helping for eightyears. He said when hestarted about 400 hamperswere being put together. That number is now in the

    600 range.Theres a need in the

    community, he said.Among the volunteers

at the warehouse last weekwas a group from KingsLinks and King of Floors. They had brought 3,300boxes of Kraft Dinner and

distributed the food amongthe hampers. Its just such a great

program we want to keepgoing, said Kings LinksNeil Bidewell.A group of students from

Cliff Drive ElementarysMe to We Club was also

helping last Wednesday bypacking apples and sortingcandy canes. The students had under-

taken food drives and a toydrive for the program butsaid it was cool to see howthe hampers were actuallyput together.

  • A community Christmasdinner, hosted by theLadner Community Kitchenand the South Delta FoodBank, fed over 100 peopleearlier this month.

The annual dinner ishosted by the same orga-nizations that providelow-income individualsand families with foodon a weekly basis fromthe Ladner ChristianFellowship.

The community kitch-en opened its doors inDecember of 2009 to workalongside the food bank. Ateam of dedicated volun-teers works quietly behindthe scenes every Wednesdaymorning serving soup andsandwiches to those thatcome to receive suppliesfrom the food bank.

We offer a helping handto people in our communitywho are facing economichardships due to job lossesand various disabilities, says kitchen co-ordinatorJini Aroon.

Aroon, a resi-dent of Ladnerwho has beenteaching healthycooking classesthrough DeltaContinuingEducation fornearly 20 years, founded thecommunitykitchen as a wayto give back. With a cateringand cookingbackground, she uses herskills to orga-nize the annualChristmas din-ner, an Easterbreakfast as wellas the weeklyprogram.

The community kitchenoperates on donationsreceived from South Deltaindividuals, groups andbusinesses. Often its gener-ous and dedicated volun-teers contribute to the meal, personally supplying the

ingredients as needed, leav-ing enough money to buyextras like fresh fruit, whichis always in short supply tolow-income families.

Aroon says as more andmore businesses and peopleare facing hardships andbudget cuts, the kitchen islooking for ways to keep

the spirit of giving alivein the community. It haslaunched a program withSave-On Foods in Ladnerthat allows customers todonate their Save-On pointsto the food bank.

For any other type ofdonation, call Aroon at 604-940-9355.

  • Tsawwassen author MarieWarder just cant stop writing.

The former reporter haswritten over 20 books, includ-ing her Stories from SouthAfrica fiction series, andrecently turned her attention tochildrens e-books with a newseries, Little Kindle Tales forLittle People.

Warder, originally fromSouth Africa, now uses voicerecognition software to writedue to health problems.

One of her books, TheBronze Killer, is about hemo-chromatosis, a genetic disorderthat results in iron overload.Warder lost her husband Tomto complications from the dis-order in 1992.

She also founded theCanadian Hemochromatosis Society, theHemochromatosis Society of SouthernAfrica and the International Alliance ofHemochromatosis Societies.

Last year Warder was recognized with alifetime achievement awardat an International BioIronSociety conference.Q:Whats enabled you

to be so productive overyour career?

I would say, first of all,ill health. When I was verylittle I had to spend a lot oftime in the hospital and athome. When I was at homeI had to do something topass the time. I remember Ijoined the SABCs Young Ideas radio cluband you could write a play for it. So, I didthat. My sisters best friend was a journal-ist and she was 10 years older than I. Wehad moved to Cape Town. The same youngfellow who was my sisters friend was nowworking for the Argus in Cape Town. Isaid, What do you do? He said, We writethings and sell them to newspapers. I said,They pay you?Q: Out of all your work as an author

is there any book youre most proud of?The Bronze Killer, simply because it has

saved lives. Thats what got me the medaland the lifetime achievement. I didnt doit for that. Honestly, I did not do it forany other reason but I knew things that

other people didnt know and I felt it wasmy duty to tell them. Until then they didnot believe it was hereditary, they did notbelieve that women could get hemochroma-tosis and they did not believe you could getit as young as my daughter was. She was

    30. (Shes well now.)Q: How do you feel

about the present dayawareness level regardingthe condition?

It is amazing. We haveproved that its the worldsmost common genetic disor-der. We have proved that inCanada one in 300 will dieof it.Q:Youre also a blogger.

What topics have you beenblogging about lately?

I blogged recently about my horror aboutwhats going on in South Africa. I bloggedabout healing because I belong to the Orderof Saint Luke. I wrote recently about theHemochromatosis Society of South Africabecause many people didnt know how itbegan and how this couldve been possible.Q:You recently started writing stories

for kids. What do you enjoy about that?I love writing stories for little people.

So thats what I called them, Little KindleTales for Little People. I love it. I write allthe time. If Im not writing an article forBlogcritics, then Ive got to write some-thing else. Its in my blood. Talking, writ-ing, whatever.

Its in her blood so localauthor keeps on writing

Maybe Im old-fashioned, but theresnothing I find more heartwarming at thistime of year than being wished MerryChristmas in a mass email.Nothing says best wishes of the holi-

day season quite like a PR flack or com-pany executive pounding out a heartfeltmessage, or attaching some piece ofcheesy stock art, and then sending it toabsolutely everyone in the ol electronicaddress book. To know they took theself-serving step of adding my address totheir email inventory at some point overthe last few years is truly touching.I know some people might find it

offensive to receive a one-size-fits-allgreeting, but Im really touched whenthose doing the sending take the time outof their busy schedules to personalize itwith the salutation.I cant tell you how warm and fuzzy I

feel inside, and how it makes the wordsthat follow so much more meaningful, when theres a Dear Editor at the out-set. Its just like two old friends catchingup after a year apart.I fully recognize times are still tough

out there so the practice of buying andmailing impersonal Christmas cardshas fallen victim to purse-tighteningmeasures for most organizations andindividuals. The ability to send a greetingelectronically, thus avoiding the cost andhassle of addressing what in some casesmight be hundreds of cards, is not onlygood for the bottom line, but it frees uptime to connect with real friends, likethose you find on Facebook.I realize its the way the world is

going, but I still find theres somethingmissing. There was always somethingmagical about how those bulk Christmascards managed to linger on the desk orsomewhere else in the office, that some-how it seemed wrong to prematurely putthem in their ultimate resting place: therecycling bin.You cant say the same thing for an

electronic greeting. Im definitely notgoing to print one out, and its not likeIm going back to the inbox for anotherlook, so Ive come to the conclusion theonly other course of action is to leanon the delete button. I can see how thatmight appear a tad ungrateful, but Icomfort myself knowing the sender putabout the same amount of thought intothe exchange. At this point I know it might seem a

little disingenuous for me to wish youa Merry Christmas, but in my defence Ishould point out this greeting is intendedonly for you. After all, I had this newspa-per delivered directly to your door. And that, you must admit, beats an e-

    greeting any day.

So this is Christmas.By now, your tree should be dec-

orated, stockings stuffed, presentsbought/made/re-gifted and turkeyor tofurkey gently defrosting in thekitchen. Tomorrow is the Big Day.Every year, there is much debate

about the meaning of Christmas.Heck, some of us even wrestlewith the use of the very word. Dowe say Merry Christmas, SeasonsGreetings or Happy Holidays? Itsan endless exchange over everysocial and news medium fromTwitter to the (insert name oflarge city here) Times about howChristmas is and should be cel-ebrated.Christians remind us that

Christmas is the annual commemo-ration of the birth of Jesus Christ, with associated rituals and beliefs. And they have the Bible, historyand Wikipedia on their side.Meanwhile, non-Christians co-

op the day as an opportunity torejoice and reflect on the year, and

maybe have a nice dinner.Still others see Christmas as a

couple of extra days off work and achance to catch up with friends andfamily. If youre a kid, Christmas is that

wonderful season when your par-ents take you to the mall and youtell some chubby old guy in a redsuit what you want and it magicallyappears wrapped and ready for youon Christmas morning. To me, Christmas is all of the

above and more. Its that wonder-fully inclusive holiday celebrationthat miraculously brings aboutspontaneous acts of kindness andgenerosity among people andinspires feelings of hope, warmthand joy. Every day should be soblessed.Growing up, we didnt observe

the religious meaning of Christmas, although my family still reveled inits customs by putting up a tree, decorating the house, exchanginggifts and stuffing ourselves withroast turkey, which we chased afew hours later with turkey sand-wiches and a nap before bed.I remember stockings stuffed

with mandarin oranges (my parentsmay have missed the mark on thatone) and presents that seemed togo on forever or maybe it justseemed that way since we hadto preserve the wrapping paperfor next year and consequently it

always took us a long time to openthem. There were toys and games,

clothes and makeup, books, per-fume, bicycle accessories, jewelryand genuine vinyl records. In the days leading up to and fol-

lowing Christmas, the house wasfull of baked goods: my momsspecial nuts and bolts snack mix,Nanaimo bars, cherry squares, shortbread cookies, caramel corn, fruit cake and the year we gotour first microwave oven moun-tains of microwave peanut brittle.Today, Christmas is different

but its still special, and in fact Imdowning some of my moms nutsand bolts as I write this. But formany people in our community,Christmas is a struggle. The rea-sons vary from economic challeng-es to personal loss and loneliness. Were lucky in South Delta to

have organizations like Deltassist, the Delta Hospice Society, theDelta Society for CommunityLiving, the Kiwanis Club of Ladnerand Tsawwassen and the McKeeHouse Seniors Society, among oth-ers, to provide help and guidanceto people who may be sufferingat Christmas. Surviving on dona-tions and volunteers, these groupsperform miracles every day of theyear. To them, and to you, a very

    Merry Christmas.

Christmas offers a reason tocelebrate regardless of faith

Sometimes when I lookaround this wonderfulplace, I am astonished byhow much it means to me.When the sun is shiningthere is a real sparkle inthe air. And I marvel thata community like ours hassurvived in this modern era.We live 25 minutes from

the heart of a big city, yetwe play host to unrivalledagricultural lands and toa landscape that is amongthe most vital ecosystemsin North America. Ourresidential cores are com-pact and small enough thatcommunity remains ameaningful word.We recognize neigh-

bours as we shop; we smile

at strangers we pass onthe streets; we know ourshopkeepers by name; weactually see the work of ourcommunity organizations;we play on our own beachesand walk along our ownriver. How lucky we are.We are a grand commu-

nity and we need to protectthis place. Community andquality of life are very tenu-ous things, but they are thesoul of Delta. We are notthe hustle of downtown. Weare not the centre of enter-tainment delights. We have chosen a dif-

ferent lifestyle, one thatoffers quiet and comfortand neighbourhood, whereour own efforts to contrib-ute shine through so manythings.Listen to the names of

some of our neighbourswho make our home whatit is. The AgriculturalSociety, the Hospital

Auxiliary, the Legion, ourRotary and Kiwanis andLions and Oddfellows andTOOBs, our Arts Council,Firefighters,Pipe Band,BusinessAssociationsand Chamberof Commerce, our churchesand institu-tions of faith. We visit

and our hospice. We lightChristmas trees and Santagives us breakfast. We have

May Days and Sun Fest.Deltassist and Reach andthe Community LivingSociety make lives bet-

  • I must admit something:I have no idea what a par-tridge in a pear tree has todo with Christmas. For that matter, I do

not understand the festiverelevance of three maids amilking or seven swans aswimming.I do not know what it

means to go a wassailing, and Ive never met anyonewho asked Santa for teethfor Christmas let alone ahippopotamus.Still. For the past few

weeks, I have been belt-ing out references to themanyway, and will con-tinue doing just that untilChristmas is done. Nevermind that I dont knowwhat a calling bird is, andwouldnt even recognizeone if it landed in the treeout back and called myname. Ill sing about it any-way.I also have no idea why

    people drink eggnog at

Christmas instead of, oh,cranberry juice, but no mat-ter. Ill drink it anyway and add a touch of rum andnutmeg and go back tothe juice thing the momentthe holidays done.Same thing

with short-bread andmistletoe andstockings onthe hearth. No idea whyChristmas isred and greenand not yellow and magen-ta. Not a clue why peoplethe world over bring trees yes, trees! into theirliving rooms, adorn themwith baubles and tinsel andlights, and then sit back andadmire them without evenpausing to consider that atree belongs in a house asmuch as a partridge or aswan does. But I wouldnt think of

going tree-less. And Idnever forego the stockings.I could do some research,

I suppose. I could spendan evening or an entireweekend hunchedover my computer, ask-ing Google to tell me whywe buy candy canes in

December, and why wewouldnt dream of servingquiche instead of turkey andstuffing.I could try to get to

the bottom of the flyingreindeer and the plum pud-

ding andthe threemaids andthe roastedchestnutsand theswagsof pineboughs

that have been adorning mymantel for weeks. But I wont.Truth is, I dont care.

Tonight, we will hang thestockings and put out themilk and cookies. Andtomorrow, we will gatherby the tree yes, the tree and open the surpriseswe have wrapped for eachother, and sing about call-ing birds and French hensand feast, not on quiche, but on turkey and stuffingand cranberries.Thats the thing about tra-

ditions. It doesnt matter ifwe get them. It only mattersthat theyre there.Merry Christmas to you

    all!

It wouldnt be Christmaswithout all the traditions

    ChristmasGreetings

  • Christmas Greetings

A Christmas surprise ison the way for two LowerMainland single momswith young children that islikely to create a holidaythe recipients will not soonforget.

The Lower MainlandPurpose Society runs ahamper program wheresocial workers help connectfamilies in need to individu-als looking to help out thisholiday season. The familyremains largely anonymousexcept for a few smalldetails such as the ages ofthe children.

South Delta mom JillKeating had been interestedin sponsoring a family fora while but did not feel shecould take on the entirehamper on her own untilnow.

Keating is part of a sup-

portive Facebook group oflocal moms with toddlersand infants where momscan post questions abouttheir babies, ask for productreviews or simply requestsome advice.

She decided to proposethe idea of sponsoring twofamilies through the hamperprogram in early Novemberand was overwhelmedby the groups positiveresponse.

The moms agreed tosponsor two single moth-ers living in the LowerMainland, one with a five-month-old boy, the otherwith a two-year-old girl.

The [South Delta]moms have been out ofthis world, said Keating. We have received cribs, strollers, colouring books,a tricycle, and an entire boxof bath and shampoo stuff. And thats just the start ofthe list.

What Jill has col-lected in three weeks willjust blow your mind, said Angela Thompson,self-declared worker beeto Keatings mastermindoperation.

The two ladies used theFacebook group to keepeveryone updated on whatdonations they had andwhat was still needed.

Keatings living roomwas packed and stackedso high with donations thepiano was barely visible.

Thompson decided toget involved with the ham-per project after she heardwhat one of the anonymousmoms was asking for.

We were looking into atrip to Hawaii but realizedwe couldnt quite afford it,said Thompson. And herethis woman was only askingfor toilet paper and cleaningsupplies.

    The two anonymous

Tsawwassens LauraMarriott is keeping thememory of her late friendalive and helping the lessfortunate at the same time.

This holiday seasonmarked the eighth yearMarriott has adopted fami-lies through the non-profitLower Mainland PurposeSociety in honour of JohnPaul Larkin, who died afterbeing hit by a SUV in 2005.

Marriott was joinedby Larkins family at theTsawwassen Safeway tobuy groceries for the fami-lies.

It was a really wonder-ful experience. JPs momhad tears in her eyes acouple times. She justcouldnt believe how muchpeople donated to make thishappen, said Marriott, whopre-made shopping lists and

walked the aislesof the store the daybefore.

Larkin and apair of friendswere struck bya SUV whilecrossing a streetin Vancouver inNovember of 2005.Larkin spent about10 days in hospitalbefore succumbing to hisinjuries. He was 31.

Marriott described him asvery loyal, very giving andsaid he was a great friend.

He would really givethe shirt off his back, andthats what made me thinkof doing something like thisin the beginning.

Marriott and Larkinsfamily and friends adoptedtwo families in honour ofJohn Paul through the non-profit society.

She also noted thatDeltas Sacred Heart

School, whichtwo of her kidsattend, adopted twofamilies through thegroup as well. Theschool organizeddonations by put-ting up a Christmastree where staff, parents and studentstook hand-madeornaments off the

tree and purchased the itemlisted on the back of theornament, whether it bea gift card, gifts, or othernecessities, she explained.

Marriott said the shop-ping for all four familiestook four hours as theyloaded a total of 12 grocerycarts.

Marriott said she wantedto thank everyone thathelped out.

Its good to know holidaygoodwill is still alive andkicking. The Ladner Community

Police Station, or CoPS,was abuzz with excitementrecently while station vol-unteers packaged donationsin festive wrapping for theirannual Christmas hamper. The hamper program is

a 16-year tradition at thestation where volunteersorganize, donate and wrapgifts destined for one localfamily. This year they donated a

hamper packed with non-perishable food items, toys, clothes and gift cards tolocal grocery stores to asingle mother of a 10-year-old and a five-year-old.Ladner CoPS volunteers

make a point of donatingto a single mother livingin the Ladner Willowsbuilding, part of the RedDoor Housing Society forlow-income families. Avolunteer calls the personin charge of the building in

early November to discusswho should receive thatyears hamper.Isabel Benedict has been

    a volunteer at the station

for 10 years and still getsa kick out of calling up thefamily to tell them theyhave a hamper on the way afew days before its delivery.

We called her up[Tuesday] and explainedwe were with the LadnerCommunity Police Stationand told her we have a

hamper to deliver, saidBenedict. She thanked us profuse-

ly but she has no idea thesize of what is coming her

way, she said with a smile, gesturing to the sprawling,knee-high pile of festiveboxes.Theresa McDermid is

another volunteer at the sta-tion that enjoys donating toa family that really appreci-ates what they receive. She said she has two

grandchildren that donteven know what to askSanta for because theyalready have everythingthey could possibly wishfor.Donating to families with

lengthy Santa wish lists is abetter way to feed the fes-tive spirit, said McDermid.Last years hamper deliv-

ery had the recipient motherin tears while she thankedthe volunteers. After drivingaway, McDermid remem-bered she had forgottento explain there was anenvelope in the hamperfilled with gift cards tolocal grocery stores. Whenshe called the mother up toexplain the envelope, thewoman answered the phonestill in tears, already havingopened the envelope.

Tack hammers and plierswere stacked on the shelf

With hopes that some trimmerwould buy for himself.

The roll goods were lined uplike little tin men

As I walked by so slowlyI turned down the bend.

I turned very slowlycraning by head

I saw what I wantedA vinyl in red!

I knew it was Christmastops werent in style

But springtime would be herein just a short while.

    I am always impressed

with Nelsons service and priceAnd I thought of his crewwho are always so nice.

I think that Ill call themthat old Nelson crew

And place one last orderYes, thats what Ill do.

As I hung up the phoneI heard such a chatterI went straight outside

And what to my wondering eyesshould appear

But Rob Nelson himselfand eight tiny reindeer!

What service! I exclaimedas he dropped off my order

He had one more stop and askedWhich way to the border?
