The public will have arare opportunity to enterone of the private halls ofthe Freemasons next week.

Tsawwassen Lodge No.195, in association withMelrose Lodge No. 67,will have a free informa-tion session at its Deltahall to let people knowmore about the fraternalorganization known asFreemasonry. It’s aimedat letting people knowwhat they’re all about aswell as dispelling some ofthe myths and conspiracytheories.

The Freemasons are theoldest and most widelyknown fraternal organiza-tion in the world, report-edly with origins fromthe stonemasons’ guildsduring the Middle Ages.The language and symbolsused in the fraternity’srituals come from that era.

Freemasonry has sincedeveloped into a world-wide fraternity emphasiz-ing personal study, self-improvement and socialbetterment via individual

involvement and philan-thropy.

“There’s actually quitea bit of interesting historyand there’s all kinds ofartifacts and times of his-tory, poems and things likethis, to try to understandwhere this all came from,”said Delta resident GregNicholls, past worship-ful master of TsawwassenLodge No. 185 A.F. &A.M. (Ancient Free and

Accepted Masons). “And,of course, there’s all kindsof that conspiracy stuffthat goes along with it.

“There’s really no wrongquestions to ask andwe’ve got nothing to hide,”Nicholls said.

As far as Freemasonrybeing often referred to as asecret society, the organi-zation notes any socialgroup or private businessis “secret” in that its busi-

ness meetings might beopen only to its members.In Freemasonry, the pro-cess of joining is also a pri-vate matter. Its membersare pledged not to discusswith non-members certainparts of the ceremoniesassociated with the organi-zation.

“What we tend not to doand why this conspiracybelief seems to carry onis that we’re not out there

to get into argument ordebate with anyone. It’snot worth having that typeof debate and it’s sort of anunspoken rule to not getinto an argument nobodyis going to win,” Nichollsnoted.

Freemasons are aworldwide organizationand have contributedto the fabric of Delta forlonger than the municipal-ity has even been incorpo-rated, Nicholls said.

“We also have somereally cool artifacts andrepresentative of the peo-ple who were in that roomwere leaders and creatorsof our community.”

The presentation, Originof Freemasonry: Myths,Theories, and History, byW. Bro. Jonathan Silveira,takes place Wednesday,Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at 4873Delta St., Ladner.

The Freemasons will bein their full attire and thedress code for everyoneelse, including prospects,is regular business attire.

Lois Jackson, Delta’s twoMLAs, farmers and others,and she’ll soon be meet-ing with Tsawwassen FirstNation leadership.

She added it will be“extremely beneficial” forDelta to have a cabinetminister who will continueto keep the profile raisedfor the community, havingalready had discussionswith her fellow cabinetministers regarding theimportance of Delta to thenational economy.

In his introduction ofQualtrough, John Furlong,Own the Podium boardchairman and formerCEO of the VancouverOlympics, said she bringsexperience and credibilityto the ministerial positionand will be a champion forsport in Canada.

Qualtrough promisedsport advocates to makethe complex system easierto navigate and to try toupgrade and revitalize rec-reation infrastructure.

When later asked aboutthe possibility of a multi-purpose sport facilityin Delta, she answered“maybe” and that there isa need for more such facil-ities across the country.She said Delta has somephenomenal facilities butlacks support infrastruc-ture, including accommo-dations, to hold sportingevents, so they need tofind creative solutions.

to the job and for Delta,Port Metro Vancouverpresident and CEO RobinSilvester, in a wrap-upspeech, said he was look-ing forward to workingwith the MP.

During the question-and-answer portion,Qualtrough said Delta ispivotal to Canada’s tradeand “if Delta shuts downthere is no gateway.” Sheadded that in some ways,“Delta is doing more thanits share.”

Just when it started tick-ing again, the clock hasstopped once more for

Port Metro Vancouver.Last month, the

Canadian EnvironmentalAssessment Agencyrequested additionalinformation from the port

authority regarding itsTerminal 2 proposal atRoberts Bank. The addi-tional information on fish,species at risk and marineanimals, as well as how

invasive plant species willbe effectively managed, isrequired before the appli-cation can proceed anyfurther at the federal level.

It means the “regula-tory clock” has stoppeduntil the port submitsthe information and theagency believes a panelwould have all the neces-sary information for acomprehensive reviewof the three-berth con-tainer terminal proposal.The federal environmentminister won’t appointa review panel until theCanadian EnvironmentalAssessment Agency is sat-isfied.

There’s no timeline onwhen the additional infor-mation must or will besubmitted.

The project is sub-ject to an independentreview panel, under theCanadian EnvironmentalAssessment Act, butwill also undergo anassessment under theB.C. EnvironmentalAssessment Act. It alsorequires other permits andauthorizations.

The port had estimatedconstruction of the project

would commence some-time in 2018 and wouldtake approximately fiveyears to complete.

Last spring, it submitteda comprehensive envi-ronmental document forT2, which was to trigger alengthy review process.

The environmentalimpact statement sum-marizes the results ofdozens of studies and theport notes its researchinvolved the assessment ofpotential environmental,economic, social, heritageand health effects of theproject, including cumula-tive effects.

Last summer, the agen-cy asked the port authorityfor additional informa-tion before the reviewcould proceed, effectivelystopping the clock until

it deemed the documentcomplete. That informa-tion was submitted in lateOctober, but the port hasnow seen the clock stop asecond time.

As far as some ofthe local input alreadyreceived, the DeltaFarmers’ Institute lastsummer commented thatif T2 was to proceed, agri-cultural lands would beunder further pressure andas much as 600 hectareswould be earmarked forport-related development.The DFI has asked for theenvironmental assessmentto include impacts to agri-cultural lands.

Politicians, citizengroups and environmentalorganizations have alsoconveyed concerns oropposition.

5100-block of WinskillDrive: Witnesses informedthe complainant they hadjust heard his vehicle startand immediately leave thedriveway. The complain-ant then contacted policeindicating his vehicle hadbeen stolen and describedit as a four-door shortbox white truck with a liftand white front bumper.There is a “rock and roll”sticker on the bumper andtwo baby seats in the rearpassenger seat. An exten-sive patrol of the area bypolice proved negative.Information regarding thevehicle added to the policeinformation database.

• Jan. 14, 8:20 a.m.,1800-block of 56th Street:A business reported theglass to the front door ofthe shop had been brokenand the business entered.Items stolen include toolsand a laptop valued at$400. Glass seized forforensic examination.

• Jan. 14, 3:29 p.m.,1600-block of Golf ClubDrive: Complainantreported she and some of

her neighbours had beenexperiencing petty theftsfrom their yards over thepast year, some of whichhad not been reported. Inthe latest occurrence pil-lows from the front benchof her residence werestolen. Police encouragedresidents to report allthefts.

• Jan. 14, 4 p.m., 900-block of Bayview Drive.Tenants reported thieveshad entered their resi-dence and stolen two SonyPS4s, seven PS4 games, anApple iPod Touch, a KRKspeaker set with sub-woof-er and a Live Controllerboard. As there was nosign of forced entry, itis believed the suspectsentered the residencethrough an unlocked rearpatio door.

• Jan. 15, 1 p.m., 1000-block of Eden Crescent:Complainant reported thetheft sometime overnightof her Maui Jim sunglassesfrom her unlocked vehicleparked in her driveway.

• Jan. 16, 1:13 p.m.,5700-block of FergusonCourt: Complainantreported an attemptedtheft from her unlockedvehicle parked in herdriveway. Police attendedand investigation locateda neighbour who had thetheft of a pair of Oakleysunglasses from hisunlocked vehicle the priornight. Video surveillanceobtained from a residentin the cul-de-sac showed amale entered the area on aBMX-style bicycle. He wasof slim build wearing darkclothing, baseball cap anda dark backpack.

• Jan. 16, 7:40 p.m.,Tudor Court: Reportreceived from complain-ant that her vehicle wasstolen from her driveway.Keys to the vehicle anda house key were in the

console of the vehicle.Complainant also foundthe front door to the resi-dence unlocked. Unknownif the vehicle or house hadbeen left locked.

LADNER• Jan. 12, 7 p.m., 5100-

block of Ladner TrunkRoad: Police received awallet found in the parkinglot of the shopping centre.The wallet contains anOklahoma driver’s licenseand student card, creditcard and other miscellane-ous loyalty cards. Ownercan claim on identificationat police headquarters,4455 Clarence TaylorCrescent.

• Jan. 12, 11:25 a.m.,Roberts Bank Road:Complainant reportedthe possible theft of scrapmetal. Two male suspectswere observed takingapart lamp standards leftat the roadside. The maleswere advised this was notscrap and they immedi-ately fled the area. Policeprovided with the licenseplate number of the sus-pect’s vehicle and are fol-lowing up.

• Jan. 12, 1 p.m., 7600-block of Berg Road:Complainant reported thatwhile he was changinghis clothes at his worksitehe had left his wallet andkeys on a shelf. Later inthe day another employeebrought the complain-ant his keys but the walletwas missing. The walletcontained many personalcards, including bank andcredit cards, and cash.Information regardingthe contents of the walletentered in the police infor-mation database.

• Jan. 13, 5:33 p.m.,5200-block of LadnerTrunk Road: Fraudreported by complainantwho had accepted a job

advertised on Craigslist.The position was listedfrom “Monark” as a “secretshopper” customer serviceevaluator. The complain-ant received a cheque for$1,950 from the suspect,which she deposited inher account. She thentransferred $1,350 fromher personal account tothe suspect as required.The original cheque wasvoided as being from anunknown account and thecomplainant suffered a$1,350 loss. The bank hasbeen provided with all thedetails and the investiga-tion continues.

• Jan. 14, 11:58 a.m.,Progress Way: A busi-ness reported the theft ofparts taken from a Bobcatparked in its unlockedcommercial compound.Theft occurred over thepast two days and includ-ed four wheels and tires,and a front-end bucket.

• Jan. 14, 4:47 p.m.,7800-block of HoskinsStreet: Complainantreported he had left histruck parked on the streetover the weekend andwhen he returned hefound the tailgate andall the bolts had beenstolen. Complainant indi-cated that in the past whileparked in the same area hehas had his batteries andfuel stolen. Nothing forforensic examination ascomplainant had alreadyhad the vehicle repaired.

• Jan. 15, 2:23 p.m.,5200-block of LadnerTrunk Road: A businessreported a suspect enteredthe store, selected a radio,concealed it and then leftwithout paying. Suspect isdescribed as a bald malewearing a brown jacketand light pants. Video sur-veillance still photos of thesuspect disseminated forpossible identification.

Running Jan. 28 to 30at KinVillage CommunityCentre in Tsawwassen,the sale usually bringsin about 20,000 books.Any donations must bedropped off by Tuesday,Jan. 26 to give volunteerstime to sort the titlesbefore setting up for thesale.

In addition to gentlyused books, there will also

be jigsaw puzzles, games,CDs and DVDs.

The sale features booksof all kinds, from romanceand best sellers to biogra-phies, historical and chil-dren’s stories.

Dinwoodie said theonly donations that arenot accepted are ency-clopedias, text books,magazines and computerbooks, which can becomeoutdated.

Paperbacks are gener-ally $1, hard covers $2and it’s $3 or $4 for largecoffee-table type books.

Now in its 11th year, lastyear’s sale raised $10,000.

All proceeds from this

year’s sale will go towardspurchasing a new bus forKinVillage. Dinwoodiesaid the centre is in thefinal fundraising push topurchase a replacementfor the current bus, whichis more than 16 years old.

Long-time Ladner resi-dent Shannon Lansdownebeat out five other com-petitors earlier this monthto be named winner of the2016 Extreme HuntressCompetition.

Lansdowne, whogrew up in Ladner butmoved to Nanoose Bayon Vancouver Island in2013, was back in Texas forthe awards gala. She wason stage in front of 1,300people with her five fel-low competitors, many ofwhom have become goodfriends, when her namewas called.

“I was shocked,” shesaid, adding she managedto pull a speech togetherand say a few words to thecrowd.

“It feels great. It’s fantas-tic,” she said. “It’s an hon-our to receive a trophy likethat and being recognizedby my fellow hunters.”

Lansdowne had to makeit through several stages

of the contest to reach thestage in Dallas.

This is the sixth year forthe international competi-tion that aims to createpositive role models forwomen who want to par-ticipate in hunting.

To enter the contest,each woman had to sub-mit an essay describingwhy she is an extremehuntress. A panel of judgesconsidered all the sub-missions and chose 20to move on to the semi-finals. Lansdowne madethe cut and then made it tothe finals based on a com-bination of judges’ scoresand online voting. She wasone of two B.C. womenwhomade it to the finals.The other four finalists allhail from the U.S.

Last July, the six finaliststraveled to the famed 777Ranch in Texas where theyspent an intense weekcompeting in a series ofchallenges. Everythingwas filmed and then airedon the Extreme Huntresswebsite over 13 weeks.

Following each episode,viewers were able to votefor their favourite com-petitor.

Going into the awardsgala, the competitors knewthe results of the publicvoting and the skills com-petition, which combinedaccounted for 60 per centof their final scores, withthe judges’ scores makingup the final 40 per cent.

Lansdowne said she feltgood going into the gala.She had placed fourth inonline voting with 12,000votes and knew she hadcome in first in the skillscompetition.

Lansdowne was intro-duced to hunting at anearly age. Her father wasan outfitter and ownedhunting territory on theprovince’s central coastwhere he would guideclients on hunts. She fol-lowed in his footsteps andworked for a time as ahunting guide.

She said she would liketo parlay her win into pro-moting the industry.

You’ve got to think it’s onlya matter of time before theschool closure discussionstaking place in Vancouverand Richmondmake their

way out here.The Vancouver school board is

scheduled to debate a staff report nextweek that considers closing more thana dozen schools, while trustees inRichmond held series of open houseslast fall as they too mull possible schoolclosures.

Roughly three-quarters ofRichmond’s schools are under-utilized,according to Ministry of Educationguidelines, which isn’t terribly surpris-ing in a district that graduated 2,200high school students last June but onlywelcomed about 1,400 kindergartenstudents in September. Vancouver’s110 public schools have a capacity foranother 9,000 students and 40 of itsschools are less than 75 per cent full.

There are all kinds of factors for thissituation, but the high cost of housing,so rich it’s out of reach for a great manyfamilies with school-aged children, isthe primary culprit. Both cities havegrown significantly in recent times, butthe cost of housing has changed thedemographics, leaving empty desks inits wake.

Delta schools saw a steady enroll-ment decline since a high water markin the early 1980s, a trend that has lev-eled off as of late, but I’ve got to wonderwhether we’re going to see that down-ward spiral begin again thanks to a redhot real estate market.

With the price of a typicalTsawwassen home now exceeding $1million, and Ladner not too far behind,housing in this once family-friendlyslice of suburbia is simply too steep.The impacts won’t be felt immediatelyas those that got in before the jump willcontinue to populate schools, but ashomeowners cash out, their replace-ments will be less likely to arrive withkids in tow.

This situation will be exacerbated byour lack of affordable options to costlysingle-family homes, although our onesaving grace might be the trickle downeffect. Those moving from pricier envi-rons view South Delta as affordable,relatively speaking, so they could bringkids here when they relocate.

The next generation of young fami-lies, however, won’t find prices to theirliking and will most likely put downroots somewhere else.

If you own property in B.C.you have received somewelcome news in the mail.The value of your propertyhas increased dramatically.

If you are renting, it may be a pre-lude to higher rents. Either way,are taxes or rent going to go up?Good question and not a lot ofclear explanation to date.

First, the municipal tax baseis made up of three communi-ties — North Delta, Ladner andTsawwassen. Second, the Deltabudget will likely go up abouttwo to four per cent along withadditional increased fixed chargesfor garbage, water, recycling andtransit.

Delta council members tell usthose last charges are “not con-trollable” by them. Nonetheless,they have been increasing wellabove the inflation rate for sometime.

The overall assessmentincrease for all of Delta is about13 per cent. That means if yourproperty value increased 13per cent, you might expect anincrease in property taxes of twoto four per cent. If your assess-ment increased more, then youwill pay more.

South Delta will bear a largerportion of the Delta tax loadbecause our assessments have

jumped more than in NorthDelta, where the increase wasonly 12 per cent. Looking at SouthDelta, assessments increased 17per cent, so if Delta’s budget goesup about three per cent, our taxeswill have a higher increase.

Looking even closer, theReal Estate Board of GreaterVancouver reports a year overyear increase of 30 per centin Ladner and 32 per cent inTsawwassen. Those prices give asense of what to expect next year—more increases are coming.

If you are living in your primaryresidence, and if a senior, thereare reductions in your taxes tofactor in. Though these deduc-tions lower the amount you pay,the percentage increase will behigher as those concessions are a

fixed amount — they don’t rise asyour property value rises.

Is it good if your property valuegoes up say 20 per cent? If yourproperty is valued at say $700,000and it increases 20 per cent,you have made— on paper —$140,000. If it’s your primary resi-dence, that increase is tax free.

Just howmuch did you makelast year from all that sweat, effortand anxiety? Look around andyou’ll find most property own-ers made much more on theirproperty than on all the effort atemployment.

Will this last? Canadian houseprices rose on average 12 per centlast year. Regionally, the pressurefor homes in Metro Vancouver issevere. We are also the recipientsof offshore money looking fora safe place to invest, and thatmoney does not get scared by ourhouse prices.

Locally, in South Delta, thecombination of the TFN supermalls and the past discountedvalue on local houses suggest weare in for some years of substan-tially increased prices.

If you own, then great. If yourent, perhaps consider the alter-natives.Ian Robertson is long-time

Editor:I am writing to make

some comments and sug-gestions about Port MetroVancouver’s controversialproposal for a second con-tainer terminal at RobertsBank in the heart of theFraser River Estuary.

Hopefully you haveall become aware of theweak business case andof the environmental riskto the estuary and theFraser River this projectposes. Other negative fac-tors include increased air,noise and light pollution,industrial developmentpressures on hundreds ofacres of farmland, and anegative impact on oursalmon fishery, shellfishfishery, southern residentkiller whale population,globally significant birdhabitat and other wildlifespecies.

Obviously there arelots of risks on a projectof this magnitude at thislocation. One might askwhy Port Metro Vancouveris fast tracking its efforts

to proceed with inflatedprojections. The only rea-sons I can think of are asfollows:

1. To expand the scopeand size of the empirenamed Port MetroVancouver.

2. To provide big eco-nomic benefits to a fewso-called stakeholdersand to others such as localfarmers that stand to gainfrom selling off agricul-tural land, land develop-ers, land speculators andothers that may gain at theexpense of our environ-ment and communities.

Of course, if port expan-sion is necessary, inyears to come, it shouldfirst go to the Port ofPrince Rupert. PrinceRupert has both logisti-cal and environmentaladvantages over RobertsBank. I would assume PortMetro Vancouver doesnot like to recognize theimportance of PrinceRupert in the scheme ofthings because it is outsideof its jurisdiction and is in

effect competition.May I suggest it is

now time to redefine themandate of Port MetroVancouver. Perhaps itneeds a different boardof directors that hasa balanced make upof independent citizens,municipal councillors aswell as marine transport,engineering and logisticsexperts.

It is also time forTransport Canada to takea more active role to facili-tate accountability at PortMetro Vancouver. If thatmeans making changesto the Canadian MarineAct, then so be it. Yes, theexisting CEO and possiblyseveral senior managersmight have to be replaced.

May I suggest it is timeto put an end to little or noaccountability, the abuseof power, extravagant com-pensation and crony-ism that exists betweenmanagement and the cur-rent board of directors?

Canada needs a portauthority to manage our

ports and to ensure weprovide sufficient capac-ity for current containerimport/export businessas well as for forecastedgrowth, going forward forthe next 20 years. Statisticsprove current and pendingcontainer port expansionsfor Canada’s West Coastprovides ample capacitywithout the Roberts BankTerminal 2. Port MetroVancouver managementand board refuse to recog-nize this and continue tomislead the public in thisregard. This has to stop.

It is up to our elect-ed representatives to re-establish the port’s man-date and make the neces-sary changes to ensure weget back to reality and inso doing, save the estu-ary and the river from thisunnecessary development.

I hope you all agreethat we need to try hardto preserve the FraserRiver, its wildlife and natu-ral resources for genera-tion to come.

Our council knew of the

enormous TsawwassenFirst Nation residentialand commercial develop-ments before it approvedthe Southlands develop-ment, yet it approved itanyway.

Quite apart from yearsof incessant constructiontraffic, the Southlandstransportation study

(Appendix C) predictsthat, with the Southlandsdevelopment in place,“volume exceeds capac-ity, queue is theoreticallyinfinite” along 56th Streettwice a day.

Additionally, we canexpect more elderly peo-ple being knocked downand killed as streets are

widened (at our expense)and traffic intensityincreases. Against thisbackground, the plan togut Tsawwassen town cen-tre and replace it with con-dos, including a high rise,is singularly ill-conceived.

Ours to preserve byhand and heart. Really?

Huge numbers ofbald eagles congregatein Delta for the winter.Some gather on the tidalmarshes around BoundaryBay, feeding on the tensof thousands of ducks and

shorebirds that use the bayas a wintering area. Othereagles prefer the easypickings at the VancouverLandfill at Burns Bog orthe compost heaps andfarm fields along 72ndStreet.

The Christmas BirdCount held each yearat the end of Decemberregularly records between600 and 1,300 bald eagleswithin a 24-kilometreradius of Ladner. Yet, aslong-time residents willremember, there was atime when there were veryfew eagles in the Fraserdelta. Their numbers havesteadily risen over the last

four decades.Bird count data (view-

able on the Audubon.org website) reveal thaton average between 1958and 1974 fewer than threeeagles were observed onthe single day, mid-wintercount. Today, it is a com-mon occurrence to see adozen or more adult andjuvenile eagles perched ina single tree.

The local populationshift began in the 1980swhen average count num-bers first rose to 76, thenincreased through the1990s to 234. Since 2006,the average tally on theChristmas Bird Count has

soared to 936. Breedingnumbers have alsoincreased dramatically,and there are now 400 to500 nesting pairs in thelower Fraser Valley.

Audubon and BirdStudies Canada partner inorganizing the ChristmasBird Count, which beganin 1900. The informationgathered by thousands ofvolunteer birdwatchers isvery valuable in learningabout North Americanbirds.

While a single year’sdata can be misleading,collectively the surveyscan demonstrate popu-lation trends, such asthe increases in Delta’s

bald eagles and Anna’shummingbirds (now acommon garden bird,yet only observed onour local count since themid-1980s). Some otherbird populations havedeclined.

The Ladner count isoften first in Canada forhighest numbers of birds,with typically 140 to 152different species, but in2015 only 134 species wereseen, with the cold, wetweather being a factor.

Other eagle countsare conducted at salmonspawning sites. Last fall,1,400 bald eagles wererecorded on the ChehalisRiver during the Fraser

Valley Bald Eagle Festival.In contrast, at Brackendaleon the Squamish River,only 411 eagles werecounted this January,compared with over 3,700eagles back in 1994.

What has God done foryou lately? How would yourespond to that?

Some would answer,“Not much.” Others couldpoint to many instanceswhere God has worked intheir life.

Somemight feel thatto even ask that ques-tion borders on heresy,because it sounds so self-absorbed.

Do we expect God to beactively involved in ourlives? Do we recognize itwhen he does?

The prophet Isaiahsaid a fascinating thingin a prayer to God: “Sinceancient times no one hasheard, no ear has per-ceived, no eye has seenany God besides you, whoacts on behalf of thosewho wait for him (Isaiah64:4, NIV).” What anincredible thought: God

acts on behalf of thosewho believe in and rely onhim.

How does God act onour behalf? The Bibleis full of stories of Godintervening for his fol-lowers, but there is oneway that stands out aboveall. The New Testamentbook of Hebrews begins:In the past God spoke to

our ancestors through theprophets at many timesand in various ways, butin these last days he hasspoken to us by his Son,whom he appointed heirof all things, and throughwhom also he made theuniverse. The Son is theradiance of God’s gloryand the exact represen-tation of his being, sus-taining all things by hispowerful word. After hehad provided purificationfor sins, he sat down at theright hand of the Majestyin heaven. (Hebrews 1:1–3,NIV)

She’s lively and she’sbouncy and she’s hyperenough that she veritablyvibrates when discussingone of her passions.

She’s good with peopletoo, putting them instantlyat ease, but she’s evenbetter with her greatestpassion of all — a certaindomesticated animal thathappens to share virtuallyevery one of her key per-sonality traits.

Hint: woof, woof.Ellis, you see, is just

about the best friend a dogcould have. That she’s alsoa certified dog trainer — atleast when she’s not busywith her day job at theDelta Community AnimalShelter — only makessense.

So it was fitting shewas at the helmMondaynight as the shelterhosted its second annualIntroduction to Dog TrickTraining class. It was thefirst in a series of abso-lutely free canine-centricsessions the shelter willoffer in 2016, and it was aheck of a lot of fun.

It was also eye-open-ing. Turns out dogs aresmarter and far quickeron the uptake than mostof us think. Even better,says Ellis, tricks are justthe tip of the iceberg.With the right approach,they’ll eventually be bet-ter behaved pooches allaround and, if asked, willhappily do the bidding oftheir human overlords.

Indeed, Ellis claims thatthrough her reward-based,eye-contact approach,she’s taught her own dogsto do somemighty impres-sive stuff — like puttingaway toys, fetching sodapops and even helping tobring in the groceries.

“Trick training is obe-dience in a way. You’retraining your dog andmaking him smarter andable to listen better, butyou’re also adding a funaspect to it.

“Commands like ‘leaveit,’ which are usually usedfor treats on the paw oron the nose, can be usedin other ways. Say you’rewalking down the streetand you see another dog.Your dog thinks, ‘oh mygod, I have to see thatother dog.’ But if you tellhim to ‘leave it,’ the dogwill think, ‘Oh, if I ignorethat stimulus, and look upat you instead, I’ll get a

treat.’”As the evening rolled

on, it was plain to seesome dogs were morecomfy than others. LynneMcLoud’s Shih Tzu, forinstance, cowered in thepresence of so many of herpeers.

But even little Pearlacame around, ultimatelynailing her first trick in justa few minutes.

It’s that kind of speedthat so impressed LaraPaul. Sitting on the floor

with her Portuguese waterdog, Bueller, Paul admit-ted, “I’m not very creativeabout thinking up com-mands, but being here I’vealready thought of a cou-ple new things I can teachhim. So far tonight we’vegot ‘bow’ and ‘roll over.’ Hegot it (bowing) right away.He did it much quickerwith this instructor thanhe’s ever done with me.”

daughter Jen and furryBFF Kora.

Said David, “We camehere tonight to work onsome basic obedience. Shetends to jump a lot so wewanted to see if we couldwork on that. She’s onlyeight months old and thisis really her first formalclass. It’s been great so far.”

It’s nice to work outmuscles that makeus look good, isn’tit? I mean, let’s behonest, a lot of us

started working out purelydue to vanity.

Yes, feeling good, beingfit and decreasing ourchances for disease areall great and valid reasonsto work out, but let’s notoverlook the fact we alsowant some damn finelooking muscles as well.

Common areas thatwe train to “look good”depend on gender.

Men like to train theT-shirt muscles — thepecs, biceps and shoulders— while women prefer totrain the booty muscles —

the glutes and legs.What about the rest of

the body? In particular,those muscles that help uswith our daily activities?The ones that stabilize ourshoulders, hips and spine?

These arethe musclesthat help allthose big-ger muscleswe are soconcernedabout, likethe pecs,glutes andlegs, do theirjobs?

I callthese mus-cles our“forgottenmuscles”becausethey remainforgottenin most ofus with ourtraining programs untilwe eventually are plaguedwith some sort of painand injury and our trustyphysiotherapist prescribesthem to us.

Now, there are many lit-tle stabilizer muscles thatneed to be kept strong inthe body, but I have iden-

tified four that are com-monly weak on most indi-viduals, especially if youare over the age of 40.

The four forgotten mus-cle groups that you shouldbe training are: lower

trapezius(located inthe midback andcrucial forproper pos-ture and astable shoul-der joint),rotator cuff(behind theshoulderand impor-tant to keepstrong forshoulderstabil-ity), gluteusmedius(located atthe side ofthe hip and

helps control and stabilizethe hips, as well as assist-ing in knee tracking), andmultifidi (a series of deepmuscles attached up thespinal column used tostabilize the low back andpelvis before movement ofthe legs and arms occur).

Below I have outlined

four exercises you can eas-ily implement into yourregular workout routineso you no longer overlookyour forgotten muscles:

Lower TrapeziusLie over a ball, or face-

down on a bench, armsextended at 10 o’clock and2 o’clock position, thumbsup, and lift both arms upwhile sliding the shoulderblades down the back.

Rotator CuffElbow at 90 degrees and

under the shoulder, slowlypull the tubing by rotatingfrom the shoulder joint.

Gluteus MediusLie on your side with

your upper back, hips andtop leg against a wall. Liftthe top leg up and down,keeping the heel againstthe wall.

MultifidusRamp up the Superman

exercise by performing onyour hands and toes.

Travel photographersand writers Karen Pachecoand Karoline Cullen arepresenting an exhibittitled It’s A WonderfulWorld until Feb. 8 at theTsawwassen Arts Centre.

Pacheco’s interest inthe visual arts began withmedia studies at SFU. Herpassion for travel pho-tography was truly sealedwhen given a Pentax SP1000 before a year’s trip toEurope, the Middle Eastand Africa.

Her career as an educa-tor ended with an assign-ment in Shenzhen, China,allowing for Asian travelopportunities.

Since then, she hasdevoted her time to pho-tography, volunteeringand freelance writing.

Pacheco is a mem-ber of the Delta PhotoClub, B.C. Association ofTravel Writers and is aCanadian Association forPhotographic Art districtrep.

Yuill’s combinationof magic and comedyhas earned him invita-tions to perform at Yuk-Yuk’s Comedy Club for

South Delta artistMichael Soltis has a newexhibit in Vancouveropening next Friday.

The Games PeoplePlay is showing at KimotoGallery throughoutFebruary with an openingreception set for Friday,Jan. 29.

Soltis, who lives inTsawwassen and has beenworking in visual arts since2011, said the inspirationfor his latest series hitwhen he and his wife werecleaning out closets.

“I was getting ready topack up our hall closet andlooked at all these boardgames filling the shelves,”he said in an email. “I washit with a wave of nos-talgia looking at all thesedusty boxes — things thatused to bring me so muchpleasure now never seeingthe light of day.”

Soltis added he startedwondering if there was away to breathe new lifeinto the old games.

“That’s when the idea tocreate art out of them wasborn. I wanted to get themout of the closet and on topeople’s walls where theycan be remembered andhopefully stir conversa-

tion and connection onceagain.”

The result is The GamesPeople Play, an exhibit ofmixed media work madefrom vintage board games.

Soltis has had his workshown in galleries acrossNorth America, includ-ing Los Angeles, PalmSprings, Laguna Beach,Calgary, Vancouver andPark City. His art has alsobeen featured in Anthologymagazine,Mixed Media

Artmagazine, TedXVancouver and severalnational art blogs, and willbe featured in an upcom-ing issue of CanadianHouse and Home.

His work is held in pri-vate collections through-out Canada, the UnitedStates and Europe.

From drought to deluge,climate change meansfarming the extremes.

Farming is the art andscience of managing theunmanageable. After threemonths of drought-likeweather conditions in thesummer of 2015, Delta waspounded by storms. Heavyrains and extreme windwhipped the coast andcaused localized floodingin some areas.

For Brent Harris andother farmers aroundDelta, it brought backmemories of a harvestwashed away by heavyrains late in the summerof 2010.

“It wasn’t one particularkiller storm, it just startedraining and didn’t stop,”recalls Harris, who losthis potato and bean cropsthat year. “Everything gotso saturated that beanharvesters and combinescouldn’t go in the field andwe had to abandon thecrops.”

According to climatechange projections,extreme rainfall events inDelta are expected to dou-ble in frequency by 2050.Depending on when therain falls, it can preventfarmers from getting intowaterlogged fields to plantor harvest, increase soilerosion and nutrient run-off, and damage crops.

The extent of damagefrom excessive rainfalloften depends on howquickly farmers can getwater off their fields,making effective drain-age critically important.The existing network ofprivate and publicly man-aged drainage ditcheshelp drain farm fields.The Corporation of Delta’sengineering departmentplans for and constructsimprovements to thepublic drainage system,

in addition to ongoingmaintenance, in an effortto make the systemmoreresponsive to severe rain-fall.

Laser leveling fields alsohelps to make sure waterdoesn’t collect in lowspots and installing tiledrains, another drainagetechnique, gets rid of sub-surface water, but bothoptions come at a cost.

“Installing drainage tileis an expensive proposi-tion, and what makes ittough is the reality of landownership here,” Harrisexplains. “Land is veryexpensive, and while farm-ers own some land, themajority is leased. Thatmeans we’re looking atdoing expensive capitalimprovements on land wemay or may not have inthe future.”

Researchers at UBC,

along with the DeltaFarmers’ Institute andlocal farmers, includingHarris, are working togeth-er to evaluate practicesfor improving drainage inDelta’s agricultural lands.

The project ispart of the B.C.Agriculture &Food ClimateAction Initiative’sFarm AdaptationInnovatorProgram.

The programsupports pro-jects that helpbuild the on-farm capac-ity of farmers to adapt toclimate change impacts,and is funded by GrowingForward 2, a federal-pro-vincial, territorial initia-tive.

Sean Smukler, assistantprofessor of applied biolo-gy and soil science at UBC,

is leading the study withthe aim of demonstrat-ing approaches and thenproviding planning toolsto help farmers make deci-sions about their drainageoptions.

“Drainage is a problemin Delta. The area’s closeproximity to the ocean andFraser River, coupled withfine textured soils and lowlying topography, poses aset of unique challengesto effective field drainage,”says Smukler.

“If we get rain before thefarmers get crops out of

the field, it’s disastrous.”Demonstration sites are

being set up on two fieldsin Delta using differentspacing configurationsof drainage tile to assessbelow ground drainageoptions. The surface ofthe soil is also receivingtreatments, with farmersplanting vegetation in theforms of cover crops andgrassland set-asides.

They are looking for thebest way to get the wateroff the fields to prevent lostworking days, or worse,lost crops.

“It’s a big investment todo this kind of research, soto just do it on one farm,one crop, one soil typewould really limit appli-cability to other farmers,”Smukler explains. “Ourway of addressing that isto do a large-scale surveyof what farmers are doing

and evaluate the outcomeson their fields.”

In total, 30 fields will besampled for soil type, andmonitored and assessedfor efficacy of range ofdrainage managementpractices including clean-ing and maintenance ondrainage tile systems.

“In making drainagedecisions, farmers needto figure how frequentlythey will be dealing withextreme events, the num-ber of lost workable days,crop losses and returnsover time,” says Smukler.“One of the main out-comes of this project willbe a cost-benefit analysis,and a set of tools to actu-ally make those decisions.”

The result? More localfood on the table, and lessleft soaking in the field.Story submitted by the

It is with great sadness that we announce thepassing of Charles Stanley Jenson. Stanley was inhis 99th year and passed away at Kin Village withfamily by his side. He was a long term resident ofTsawwassen for over 45 years. Stanley waspredeceased by his loving wife, Lois of over 70 yearsin August 2015. Stanley is survived by his daughterRosemary Manarin (Herman), son Michael (Sharon),five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.Stanley lived a long and happy life and was veryproud of his career with the Royal Air Force andlater, the Royal Canadian Air Force.A Celebration of Life will be held at the CoastTsawwassen Inn, 1665 - 56th Street, Delta, BC onSunday, January 24th at 1:30pm.

Glen was raised in Richmond and graduated fromSteveston High School. As a young man he washeavily involved in baseball. He worked in the family-owned and operated, Tri Mac Concrete for 20years. Glen was involved in politics, port manage-ment and economic development. He had a loveof the water and ran a fishing charter business inPowell River. Glen enjoyed travelling extensivelywith his wife Edna, but equally enjoyed a goodBBQ and sunset in his own backyard.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday,February 6, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Delta FuneralHome, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC, witha reception to follow.

Peter passed away with his beloved wife Pat at hisside on the morning of January 6, 2016, after ashort, courageous and inspirational battle with cancer.

Peter was born in 1938 in Wiarton, ON. He graduatedfrom the University of Toronto and McGill Universityand earned his doctorate at Cornell University.After graduation he taught remote sensing for 29years in the Faculty of Forestry at the University ofBritish Columbia.

After many world travels and time in Ontario, Peterand Pat settled in Ladner where they have livedsince 1976. Peter is survived by daughters Neva-Jeanne and Veneda-Lee, step-daughters Janineand Paula and grandchildren Evan, Madison andLuke.

Pat and Neva send deep gratitude to Peter’sfriends in Ladner and around the world that senthim so much love and support over the pastmonths.

A celebration of Peter’s life will take place in hisfavorite garden this summer.
