Demand-controlled ventilation

An unoccupied room requires minimal ventilation and air conditioning.

Reduced impact on the climate is no longer just a pretty phrase and a set of objectives. Now people are making demands.

An important sub-demand for reducing the effects on the environment, and at the same time saving operating costs, is to reduce the power consumption of buildings.

In fact, our buildings account for 40% of the community’s total energy consumption. Here, there are enormous oppor-tunities for reducing energy consumption and operating costs – and in this way also reducing harmful impact on the Earth’s climate.

Demand-controlled ventilation involves ventilating and con-ditioning the air in a room precisely to meet our needs – no more and no less. The potential for savings is substantial, especially in premises where there is considerable variation between low and high load conditions in rooms and during times when there are few or no occupants – which is the case in many premises.

Swegon has products and systems for demand-controlled ventilation that conform to high standards of performance – a healthy indoor climate is paramount and no exceptions are acceptable. The products are also designed for renovation, which means that you can also reduce energy consumption in an existing building without extensively having to rebuild it.

This brochure gives an overview of our products and systems for demand-controlled ventilation. Detailed information is available for downloading at www.swegon.com or by con-tacting our representatives.

When the room is in use, ventilation and air condition-ing is controlled to meet the needs of the occupants.

The production of energy involves to a great extent the burning of fossil fuels and this has impact on the

earth’s climate. The way we consume energy may also have impact on the climate.

Therefore ever more stringent requirements are made on the power consumption of buildings.

The way to save both the environment and operating costs

Zone control is well-suited for larger systems with demand-controlled ventilation at the room level. The system is divided up into zones with intelligent zone dampers. The system will be stable since it can more quickly adjust to fluctuations in pressure caused by the variable airflows in the room.

At the system level, you can gain full control of the entire ventila-tion system. This offers you optimal opportunities for achieving eco-nomical operation. The Super WISE communication unit is in contact with all the zone dampers and the room products, and it manages com-munication with the Swegon GOLD air handling units and with the most commonly used supervisory systems.

Demand-controlled ventilation

BenefitsEnergy-efficient operation since the room is venti- ►lated, heated and cooled exactly as called for by the load, neither more or less.

Free cooling can be utilised during a large part of ►the year.

High comfort and draught-free environment. ►

Fast and simple wiring (see page 14). ►

Separate office roomLow to normal cooling load

ConditionsRoom with normal heat load from lighting, computer equipment, per-sons and solar radiation from win-dows.

Varying number of occupants present.

SolutionDemand-controlled ventilation and cooling via active supply air diffuser. Control of radiator.

Components1. Active ADAPT Colibri supply air diffuser with integrated temperature sensor, presence detector, flow measurement and flow control via motor-driven damper

2. Valve actuator for radiator

3. Connection box (supplied with ADAPT Colibri)

4. Extract air via transfer air grille to the corridor, CGV/RGV for instance

Flow diagram

OperationThe presence detector integrated into the supply air diffuser con-trols the airflow in the room by opening or closing the motor-driven damper to the min. flow setting when the room is unoccupied and to the occupancy flow when the room is occupied.

The temperature sensor integrated into the supply air diffuser controls cooling by variably increasing the airflow from the occu-pancy flow to max. flow and heating by regulating valve actuators on radiators. When the room is unoccupied, the system allows the room temperature to rise or drop more than it would if the room was occupied, for saving energy.

The supply air diffuser and the connection box are interconnected via the modular cable supplied for fast and fault-free installation.

Communication with a main control system can take place via Modbus RTU.

OperationThe control system continuously senses whether anyone is inside the room and adjusts the airflow and temperature according to the present situation.

When the room is unoccupied, the system lowers the room tem-perature to the min. flow setting while the room temperature is allowed to rise or drop more than it would if the room was occu-pied, for saving energy. When the room is occupied, the system changes over to the comfort setting with occupancy flow and tighter temperature regulation. The system can also start operating in the boosted flow mode in order to more quickly ventilate and air condition a room that has not been occupied. The boost flow can also be enabled automatically if the difference between the required and actual room temperature is substantial.

The set points can be individually adjusted from the room terminal.

The sensor and actuator can be interconnected to the wiring termi-nals of the communication unit for fast and fault-free installation.

Communication with a main control system can take place via Modbus RTU.

OperationThe presence detector controls the airflow in the room by opening or closing the motor-driven dampers to the min. flow setting when the room is unoccupied and to the occupancy flow when the room is occupied. The extract air damper acts as the master damper and it slave-controls the supply air damper. The temperature sensor in the extract air damper controls the heat-ing by regulating the valve actuator of the radiator and cooling by variably increasing the airflow from the occupancy flow to max. flow. When the room is unoccupied, the system allows the room temperature to rise or drop more than it would if the room was occupied, for saving energy. The air quality sensor increases the airflow if the content of impurities in the air exceeds the preset set point. The supply air and extract air dampers and the sensor and valve actuators can be interconnected to the connection box, supplied, with modular connectors and wiring terminals for fast and fault-free installation. Communication with a main control system can take place via Modbus RTU.

BenefitsEnergy-efficient operation since the room is venti- ►lated, heated and cooled exactly as called for by the load, neither more or less.

Economical cooling since free cooling can be utilised ►during a large part of the year. If this is not sufficient, the controller first increases the airflow and in the next step, it switches on waterborne cooling. The cooling sequence can also be selected with water-borne cooling first and, after that, increased airflow.

Very high comfort and air quality with provision for ►individual control.

Fast and simple wiring (see page 14). ►

ConditionsConference room irregularly occupied. High demands on air volume and tem-perature regulation under maximum load conditions.

Varying number of occupants present and load.

SolutionDemand-controlled ventilation via supply air diffuser supplemented with comfort module for cooling and heat-ing.

OperationThe presence detector controls the airflow in the room via the CRT (4 and 6) supply air and extract air dampers to the min. flow setting when the room is unoccupied and to the occupancy flow when the room is occupied.

The temperature sensor controls cooling and heating by regulating the CRT supply air damper (5) and by regulating the valve actuator in the PARASOL in sequence. In the cooling case, the airflow is first variably increased to the max. flow setting, after which the valve actuator opens the valve for water cooling or vice versa. When the room is unoccupied, the system allows the room temperature to rise or drop more than it would if the room was occupied, for saving energy. The CO2 sensor increases the airflow if the content of impu-rities in the air exceeds the preset set point.

The set points can be individually adjusted from the room terminal.

The sensor and actuator can be interconnected to the wiring termi-nals of the communication unit for fast and fault-free installation.

7. Passive extract air register in toilet group for constant extract airflow

Zone 1 Zone 2

Operation In a smaller ventilation system, the GOLD air handling unit man-ages the necessary pressure control Zone dampers that divide the system into smaller zones are required in larger systems. The zone dampers react much quicker to flow changes than they would if the air handling unit located centrally and in this way provides a stable ventilation system with fewer motor movements in the system.

No duct pressure is throttled away unnecessarily and the duct pressure can be kept as low as 40-60 Pa in the zone, with provides economical operation.

In the zone example above, we see that the zone dampers in the WISE system manage both a balanced solution (zone 1) and mixed solution (zone 2).

Central extract air and balanced ventilation at the room level1. CONTROL Damper zone damper with integrated damper actuator for supply air (pressure controlled)

2. Pressure sensor for CONTROL Damper zone damper, supply air

3. CONTROL Damper zone damper with integrated damper actuator central extract air in the corridor (pressure controlled)

4. Pressure sensor for CONTROL Damper zone damper, central extract air

5. SLAVE Control zone damper with integrated damper actuator extract air (slave-controlled by zone damper 1)

6. Conference room with active supply air diffuser/damper and extract air register/damper for balanced ventilation

7. Separate office room with active supply air diffuser and extract air register for outflow to the corridor

8. Passive supply air diffuser in cloakroom for constant supply airflow

9. Passive extract air register in toilet group for constant extract airflow

BenefitsQuickly adjusts to pressure fluctuations due to the ►variable airflows in the rooms.

No unnecessary throttling of duct pressure. ►

Low duct pressure in the zone; provides a quiet ►ventilation system and economical operation.
