MR ANDREW JANSEN As you are all aware we lost Andrew Jansen, one of our staff members, during the holidays. This loss has saddened the whole school community. Andrew joined the staff at Deniliquin High School in 2010 after moving from Tumut High School. During his time at the school he was focused on helping the students to do their best and ensuring that all students, no matter their level of ability, could achieve success. He was always willing to assist his fellow teachers and the school in whatever ways he could. The whole school community is grieving at his loss and our thoughts and prayers are with Dom, Lilliane and Gabrielle and the extended family at this most difficult time. Andrew will be sorely missed by us his colleagues and the wider school community.
WELCOME BACK TO 2017 A warm welcome back to all members of our school community. I would like to welcome Ms Grocott who is replacing Ms Kramer in TAS, Ms Hof and Ms Johnson are in the English Faculty replacing Ms Forner and Ms Clear. Mr Loy will be replacing Mr Jansen in Industrial Arts until a permanent replacement can be found. Mrs Astill will be replacing Ms Riley in HSIE until a permanent replacement can be found. Mrs Bond has also been officially appointed as our School Counsellor while Mrs Laverty will be replacing Mrs Jansen during Term 1. We are currently in the process of interviews to find replacements in both Industrial Arts and HSIE. I would like to welcome the 100 Year 7 students who have started at Deniliquin High School this year. A new year brings new challenges and a fresh start for all of our students. Remember our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Co-operation as these underpin all that we do. At Deniliquin High School we have high expectations for our students with a focus on their social and emotional wellbeing. Our students are expected to behave responsibly and respectfully; they are expected
to give their personal best in their academic and personal lives. Our staff value team work and acceptance and we aim to provide student leadership opportunities in both a formal and informal manner. The staff at the High School are highly qualified professionals who are committed to the learning and wellbeing of every child. I look forward to another successful and rewarding year for our school.

ATTENDANCE Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps to build and maintain friendships with other children. If children miss the basic skills in the early years of school, they often experience difficulties in coping with their schoolwork in later years. You can help your child by getting involved with their learning right from the start and encouraging them to go to school. Must I send my child to school every day? Yes – unless:
Your child is too sick to go to school
Your child has been injured
Your child has to go to a special religious ceremony
Your child has an infectious illness (such as chicken pox, mumps or measles)
There is a serious family situation which requires their involvement.
Must my child attend sport? Yes. Sport is part of normal school activity which students must attend.
What does my child’s teacher have to do?
Mark attendance rolls every day
Request a note of explanation if your child has been absent
Inform the relevant contact person if your child is absent
Make phone calls home to check on your child’s wellbeing if your child is absent a lot
What should I do if my child has to stay away from school?
It is important to let the school know when your child will be away and why your child is absent.
Please provide a written note explaining the absence or contact the school by telephone.
Any absence from school needs to be explained within seven days of the absence.
My child won’t go to school – what should I do? You should contact your school principal as soon as possible to discuss the problem and ask for help. The principal may ask a Home School Liaison Officer to contact you. Please remember to try to make non-urgent appointments with dentists and doctors before and after school. Do not keep your child away from school for:
birthdays
minding other children
hair cuts
shopping.
Celebrate Attendance Hints and Tips No 1: Responsibilities
Parent/s or caregivers are required – by law – to
provide a written or verbal explanation to the Princi-
pal within seven days of any absence as to why their
child was not at school.
It is important that the school receives a written or
verbal explanation because:
1. It is a parent’s legal obligation to explain
their child’s absence within seven days
2. It is a requirement that the school investigate
all unexplained absences
3. It avoids the school and the School Attend-ance Officer from making unnecessary in-vestigations
4. It is the way the school knows that your
child was legitimately absent and not truant-
ing from school
If you have any difficulties in providing a writ-ten explanation for your child’s absence, please contact your school principal.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2017
The annual twilight swimming carnival saw Kyalite take out the honours again. It was fantastic to see 260 students don their house colours and settle under the new gazebos donated by our 2016 Year 12 cohort. The tradition of the Year 12 parade continued with our students enthusiastically strutting their costumes. Thanks to Mrs Laing and the troops for cooking ‘dirty’ burgers and sweltering conditions. Students enjoyed opportunities to earn points for their houses in the continuous swims and the Biggest Bomb Challenge organised by our SRC. Thanks to our expert judges, Jenny Fellows, Robyn Richards, Jake Parsons and Mr Warren.
Congratulations to the Age Champions and to all the students who qualified for the PSSA Zone Carnival on February 21
st in Deni.
A very special mention and thank you to Miss Norman for her expert organisation (and she’s not too bad in the pool either). A fantastic day was had by all.

ENGLISH NEWS Wow! What a busy start to the term we have had! Firstly, welcome to our two new staff members, Miss Johnson and Miss Hof. They are both quickly settling in to life at DHS and are enjoying getting to know all the students. Speaking of students, it is lovely to see everyone back, ready and willing to learn this year.
A reminder to our junior students about preparation they should be completing every night:
Reading for at least 15 minutes – even if it’s a newspaper or magazine (but who can pass up the allure of a great novel!)
Revise spelling words
Complete any unfinished class work
Miss Kermode’s classroom was given a make-over during the holidays thanks to Mr Warren and her students are enjoying its fresh new look, complete with ergonomic desks, balance boards, new laptops and collaborative learning stations. We are expecting big things to come out of Room 15 this year! We have lots of exciting initiative and excursions planned in English this year, both in and out of the classroom and look forward to working with all our students.
CAREERS NEWS
YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Students are being asked to start considering where they might go and what they might like to do for work experience this year. They have been advised that their options are limited only by their imaginations and some obvious rules (which we will cover comprehensively in class). Students electing to work outside of Deniliquin must consider details such as travel, accommodation and other such logistics as the cost must be covered by the student. Please start having the conversations with your student and discuss options, use your networks, contacts etc…
The dates for work experience are 22 May to 26 May inclusive.
WHITE CARD All Year 10 students interested in the construction industry, for work experience, need to be aware that they must have the White Card (general construction induction card) in order to be eligible to perform duties on a work site. Students in Year 11 or 12 who are undertaking VET subjects such as Construction or Metals and Engineering must also have completed the White Card course. If any students who fit these criteria have not completed their white card then they MUST put their name down to complete the course which will be running in house (at school). Mr Bradley has graciously offered to run the course at a heavily discounted cost of $50.00 per student. Places are limited, so if there are any students wishing to complete the White Card they must place their name on the Expression of Interest outside the Careers Office.
FUTURE MOVES Future moves is an initiative of Charles Sturt University which aims to encourage students to see university as part of their future and as a way to realise their potential and their dreams. The Future Moves program aims to inspire school students and young people from regional and rural areas to attend university. On-campus events and workshops will give students an opportunity to experience all facets of university life firsthand. Students will meet current university students and realise that university is a possibility. Future Moves’ core activities are workshops in schools and events on campus aimed at ensuring that students can act on their aspirations in informed and effective ways, have a greater awareness of the opportunities that arise from pursuing university study and an understanding of how university might be part of their future, while making school studies more relevant. Students in Year 11 have been asked to participate in this unique program in 2017.
BYOD IN CAREERS We would like to encourage students to bring their devices to Careers classes so that they can access learning tools such as the School to Work Logbook Online, My Career Match and the like. We have a limited number of hardwired computers, so, if you have a device please ensure that you bring it along to lessons.
BIG DAY IN IT The BiG Day In is an IT careers conference designed by students for students. It is designed for both high school (Years 9-12) and University students interested in careers in technology.
