Testing Materials
Choosing materials for a building
What properties would it be useful to know about the building materials?
Density, Mass and Volume
Density
Density is the unit mass per unit volume.
Its units are kgm-3 or kg/m3
Which is heavier?
Which is more dense?
Working Out Volumes
Volumes of common objects:• Cube – L3
• Cylinder – Lπr2
• Sphere – 4/3πr3
You are going to conduct a practical
Using the micrometers and mass balances available, you will:• Determine the volume and mass of the ball bearings
• Plot these results onto a scatter graph
• Find the line of best fit
• Work out a gradient
Plotting the graph
• Mass on y-axis
• Volume on x-axis
• Fill as much of the paper as possible
• I am looking for neatness and accuracy
• Don’t overstate your precision when taking readings!
