It corrects the falsehoods in British accounts of that history, deliberately concocted by Macaulay, now discredited, but still taught in Indian schools, especially private ones, and overseas, including universities, and widely repeated by middle class and educated Indians. The topics include India’s ancient origins, its development of religious thought and practices, the Vaidas and epics, the Saraswati-Indus civilisation, past and current achievements, discoveries and inventions, regional struggles, the pre-eminence of spirituality, religious tolerance, concepts of time and the universe, mastery of mathematics, language, governance, food science etc., and growth attaining the world’s highest GDP (25% by the 18th century) after China. It traces India’s conquest and exploitation by Mughals, then the British, who seized its economic base wholesale, looted its wealth and carried it to Britain, achieving widespread poverty, illiteracy, famine, and forcing indenture, while promoting and expanding caste, tribalism, and other social and religious divisions and conversions. The British divided the country, forcing reactionary extremism as a means to retrieve lost values, leaving conditions that threaten India’s integrity today.
